Judith Newby, President
Corrales MainStreet
The calendar may say spring, at least for a few more
weeks; but it sure feels like summer is here! I hope
you all had a chance to experience some of the great
events that took place in Corrales over the last six
weeks. Corrales MainStreet was one of the sponsors
of the Corrales Art Studio Tour. What a great selection of art and media! I visited a number of the studios
and was so impressed with the talent we have here in
Corrales.
And speaking of talent – I really admire all those people whose yard’s are their
canvass. Our Corrales Garden Tour highlights some of the best in the Village.
The tour certainly dispels the notion that New Mexico is a land of cactus and
tumbleweed! Thanks to all of the Garden Tour volunteers who worked so diligently
to bring us this annual event.
In early May Corrales MainStreet was pleased to host a ribbon cutting to celebrate
the relocation of one of our newest galleries – Gathering Artists. Owned by Sara
&KDGZLFNLWLVORFDWHGRQ&RUUDOHV5RDGGLUHFWO\DFURVVIURPWKH¿UHVWDWLRQ7KH
gallery features works by a number of local artists. There is a great selection of
artwork to hang on the wall or adorn your body. Be sure to stop in a see all that the
gallery offers.
Coming up in June, Corrales MainStreet will be holding its annual meeting. We
will be electing new board members who have volunteered to give of their time
and talents to keep the Corrales MainStreet organization moving forward. I’d like
to take this opportunity to thank those members of the board who will be leaving
us. Ally Cochran has spent six years on the board, most recently serving as Vice
President. Cliff Spirock is also stepping down though he will continue to act as an
indispensable memeber of our Pathways project team. Thanks to you both for all
you have done. Watch your email for information about the annual meeting.
Also coming up this summer – the annual Fourth of July festivities, a business fair
and a MainStreet open house.
And don’t forget our annual Starry Night Event. It will be held on September 7,
2013. Be sure to mark your calendars.. More information will be coming soon.
Have a great summer!
Mayor Gasteyer does the honors at the Gathering Artists ribbon cutting

Wild Bill Installs Historic Barber Pole!
The next time you
drive by 4940 Corrales Rd., look for the
newest business sign
for Wild Bill’s Hair. The
circa 1900’s 10 foot
antique barber pole
was originally in front
of a barber shop on
Central into the 1930’s
and then spent another 50 years at UNM in
the Pike House fraternity. Bill bought it from
one of his clients who
had it in his backyard
for another 30 years.
Wild Bill’s is Corrales’
¿UVWIXOOVHUYLFH:HVWern themed barber
shop and salon full of
southwest charm and
character. Retired Air
Force Tech Sgt. William Auffant would like
to invite everyone to
come and take a tour of
his one of a kind spacious facilities which includes 6 western style haircutting
stations, a horse saddle hair chair for the kids, ample indoor and back patio
waiting area, shoeshine stand, and yes even an electric player piano for
your enjoyment and more.
Mention this article and get a 25% discount on all haircut services. Call 505975-5478 to schedule an appointment, or drop by during business hours:
Mon - Fri 9 AM till 6 PM, Sat 9 AM till 5 PM and Sunday by appointment

Stepping into New Territory
Linda Dillenback arrived in Corrales eight
years ago with paints
and easel, ready to get
serious about her career
as an artist. She had
painted throughout her
life, but other pursuits had
always taken precedence.
Now she was stepping
into new territory, and she
was ready to take a more
focused approach to her
painting.
As a girl Linda attended
small Kansas schools that
didn’t offer art classes, but
her mother was artistic
and she encouraged her.
Linda graduated from
Emporia State Teacher’s
College with a B.S. in Elementary Education. She
married Harold Dillenback
and went with him to Germany where he served in the U.S. Army. When he was sent

along and cross a bridge with a sign that said there should be a river, but there was no
water, only dry sand. But I do love it here. Every day I see amazing rocks and cactus
and dramatic skies. I love the sudden cloudbursts and rainbows, though we haven’t
seen much rain lately.”
Linda looks at New Mexico with fresh eyes and she says Corrales inspires her art.
“There is such a unique feeling here. I like the quiet where I can hear the quail, the
Sandhill Cranes, and the chatter of Roadrunners.” She also loves the relaxed atmosphere of Corrales where she has found it easy to make new friends and get involved
in the community.
Early on she and Harold joined Compadres which has led them to many friends and
volunteer opportunities. Linda is a docent for the Corrales Historical Society, and she
volunteered to man a booth at the Corrales Art Studio Tour for several years before
becoming one of the participating artists last year.

Thirty years later Linda and Harold were looking for a place to retire. They had
taken vacations out west to Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico, and Linda had been
particularly drawn to the Southwest. A friend suggested that next time they were in
Albuquerque, they should look at Corrales. They did, and though they liked Corrales,
the Dillenbacks were not sure they wanted to call it home. It was so different from the
life they had lived in the Chicago suburbs where they loved life near the water, and they
had been co-owners of a boat on Lake Michigan. There was also the matter of leaving behind their support group of friends and family to live in a place that was so “out

repetition and pattern in the way speckles on a cactus answer the pebbles on the
ground where it grows. Similarly, she is drawn to the pattern of scales on an iguana or
feathers on a bird.
“I’m not inclined to paint landscapes,” Linda says. “I feel overwhelmed by wide vistas. I’m drawn to detail and a close-up view. I paint a cactus or part of a cactus rather
than the wider landscape. Most of my paintings begin with a photo. I look at the photo
and decide which elements I want to include and which I want to leave out. I crop and
rearrange and experiment with color.”
When asked about her goals for the future, Linda says, “I want my paintings to
express more feeling. I want the viewer to think more about the subject than just to
say, ‘Oh, that’s a cactus, or that’s an iguana.’ I liked learning to paint the scales on the
iguana, but now I want to express something internal that goes beyond the scales. I
want to convey my appreciation and reaction to what I am painting, both in color and in
form. I want to show beauty that someone else might not see.”
Linda says she’s moving toward more abstract realism. “I can never get away from
realism,” she says. “It’s who I am. I’m very grounded and it’s hard for me to loosen up,

Summer is upon us and there are many exciting things
happening in Corrales. The biggest news if that my
friend Aspen, the previous Pet Mayor, and I have recently
achieved high honors from the American Competitive Trail
Horse Association (ACTHA). Aspen won the Pleasure class
for New Mexico in 2013 and I won the Open class, bringing
state honors to the Horse Capital of New Mexico and the
role of Pet Mayor.

are not many
places like Corrales where you

Our local trails have really helped Aspen and I develop our abilities for navigating
obstacles. Just this past week we have navigated barking dogs, a coyote carrying

There are busy days ahead at Casa San Ysidro. This June we launch a pilot program titled Second Sundays at Casa San Ysidro. Each Second Sunday program
is built around a theme, includes informal tours of Casa’s historic rooms, and is
held from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Best of all these programs are free for everyone and
we invite Corrales residents as our special guests on these fun afternoons. If you
haven’t visited Casa recently, and even if you have, these programs are a great
time to round up the family and stop by for something new. Here’s a short description of what’s in store.
June 9; Meet two characters from New Mexico’s past; a cibolero, or Spanish buffalo hunter, presented by Manuel Lopez, and 19th century mountain man “Old Bill”
Williams, portrayed by Larry Marken. Lopez and Marken are skilled living history
presenters and are well versed in New Mexico’s frontier history. Visit with them
informally and learn about their historical clothing and equipment. At 2:30 a 45
minute Chautauqua-style presentation by these frontiersmen begins.
free of charge to schools and students, in 2014. In order to accomplish our
goals we also need to expand our team of volunteer guides. Our multihour required training will be held in August. If you would like to learn more
about this rewarding volunteer opportunity please contact me via phone
(897-8828) or email (cklopez@cabq.gov) for more information and to
receive a volunteer application.
To keep up with new developments and for something fun we hope you
will “Like” us on Facebook. Search for Casa San Ysidro, The Gutiérrez /
Minge House. We hope to see you soon at Casa!

August 11; The West’s mountain man era is known for colorful characters and
rugged frontiersmen. On this afternoon living historian Edward Wallace performs
his Chautauqua-style portrayal of real-life mountain man Jim Beckworth in his
program From Slave to Super Star. Dressed in period attire, Mr. Wallace will be
available prior to the 2:30 program to share Jim Beckwourth’s famous life during
which he overcame slavery and built a career as a frontier hunter and trapper,
guide, and hotel operator.
Thousands of area school children visit Casa each year to discover their community and state history. They learn about New Mexico’s long tradition of agriculture
and the importance of farms today. The Magic Bus program, funded by the Albuquerque Museum Foundation, is expanding its reach to bring even more students,

Since Corrales is The Horse Capital of New Mexico, it
seems only appropriate that horses play a major role in
the Annual Harvest Festival in October. Corrales Horse
and Mule People (CHAMP) will join with Dan’s Boots
and Saddles to present 2 days filled with events for every horse lover. It will be a weekend not to be missed
for anyone wanting to know about horse ownership and equine activities and
businesses centered in and out of the Village of Corrales.
Saturday: 10 am- 4:30pm multiple presentations from all aspects of Village
equine activity at Top Form Arena. Educational as well as entertaining. A virtual three ring circus with many presentations going on simultaneously. Horse
packing, driving, grooming, ground play, jumping, saddle savvy, trail obstacles,
dressage, blacksmithing, horseshoeing, horse ownership, horse rescue, mustang makeovers, therapeutic riding, veterinary medicine. See it all. As in the
