The Daniel Island News ■ April 14 - 20, 2016 Readers share their vivid memories from the Family Circle Cup Editor’s Note: By the time you read this edition of the paper, the Volvo Car Open will be over. The street will be open, the grounds packed up, and our first memories of the newly named tournament will be fresh in our mind. Last week we interviewed fans, residents, tournament staff and tournament volunteers and they shared their memories from the Family Circle Cup, in a throwback tribute to one of the longest standing names in tennis sponsorships. The tournament, with a new name, brought many of the same great tournament happenings, along with a host of new and improved offerings. While I personally love the tournaments, the excitement it brings, and the change of pace, not everyone agrees. But we sure did make memories. Below are some memories from the Family Circle Cup that our readers shared via survey. The survey says: “I was a volunteer a week before the tournament started in 2001. I was unpacking merchandise in the pro shop while they were still building the counters. Outside they were laying bricks, planting grass and trees and it never looked like it would be ready for opening day. All the newly hired pros were working from 6am until midnight, my sonin-law being one of them. Amazingly, everything was perfect by the deadline. My son-in-law, Mike Baker, was chosen to be the hitting partner all week for the eventual winner, Jennifer Capriati. So many great memories. I haven’t missed a tournament nor hardly a day of it since the opening.” “My vivid memory was the first year taking my young daughters and them sitting on the grass next to the practice courts. When the players and their coaches came off the court my daughters and their friends asked the coaches for their Ten and Five Years Ago in FIVE YEARS AGO – The Winner of the Family Circle Cup was announced In the April 14, 2011 issue of the Daniel Island News, a new business called “Passport to Daniel Island” was launched on Daniel Island during the Family Circle Cup. According to island resident Steve Ferber, who crafted the initiative with fellow islander Colby Hollifield, the Passport Program was designed to introduce area residents to all that the island has to offer – at the time 16 restaurants, plus dozens of shops and exceptional service providers. In sports news, it was reported that Caroline Wozniacki won her first Family Circle Cup. Ironically she beat Elena Versina who was also the runner up in this year’s Volvo Car Open that ended this past Sunday with a new champion, Sloane Stephens. In business news, American Benefit Services, an insurance and financial services marketing organi- autographs too!” “When Serena Williams and I were walking side by side down the side walk…I realized how hopeless her smaller female opponents must feel when they have to play her.” “Several friends from the local Ashborough East tennis team in Summerville attend the tournament every year. One year, we attended a luncheon with a great motivational speaker, Andrea Petkovic, and enjoyed a delicious lunch, sipped wine, and we each received new pink Wilson rackets signed by the luncheon speaker. After the lunch, we watched Serena play an early afternoon match (her father and his son were on the sidelines).” tournament. We knew very little about Daniel Island but I decided to contact a realtor and have him show me property on DI in between coming and going from the matches. Not only did I fall in love with Daniel Island, but so did my friends! We all got into house-hunting and while I discussed details with the (very patient) realtor, the girls discussed where I ought to place my furniture! A few months later my husband and I found our home on Daniel Island and some of the same friends have visited again and again. Before long I fully expect they too, will be house-hunting here!” “My most vivid memory is each year when the tournament is finally over and life can return to normal. TEN YEARS AGO - Tornado hits Family Circle Cup during tournament qualifying rounds In the April 13, 2006 issue of the Daniel Island News, the front cover depicted tennis player, Justin Henin-Hardenne. At the time, the 23-year-old Belgian tennis star was a heavy favorite after winning the trophy three previous times at the Family Circle Cup. However, the outcome was not in her favor. The winner that year was Nadia Petrova. In island news, Steve Livingston with the City of Charleston parks promised Daniel Islanders that more playground equipment would be Mark and Hollis Erickson, pictured with Ellie and Ben Burton, won tickets to the 2011 finals through a Facebook promotion for Abby’s Friends. added to the island’s parks, including a restroom at Etiwan Park. At the time, that park was bare. Other important parks were Freedom Park which is now located behind Daniel Island School, and also Governors Park. DANA BLALOCK, DDS High quality service and professional staff – T Brown 2/20/16 Dr. Blalock and her staff are always attentive to the needs of the patient. I have gone in for cleanings and more extensive dental work and each time I feel like a very cared for patient. The atmosphere is amazing, providing distractions from music to tv during your procedures. Dr. Blalock takes the time to explain things and follows up personally. Excellent and prompt evaluation – TM 2/5/16 Best dental experience ever! More than pleased. Just the best...again! P White 2/4/16 Another great visit to DID! As usual, Laura greeted me with a friendly hello as I walked in. No sooner had I sat down when Angela came out to see me to my appointment. She made short (but very thorough) work with my annual x-rays, and cleaning. After she completed her work, Dr. Blalock came in and performed her exam. Of course they do a great job in surprisingly a short amount of time but they really make the visit a nice experience. Following a brief approval of prior meeting’s minutes, treasurer’s report, and Daniel Island police team 5’s recount of three recent burglaries (two of the same golf cart at one Smythe Park residence within 36 hours and a break-in at the office of Bishop England High School), DINA President Glenn Williman welcomed DIPAC founder and CEO Mary Gould to the podium. For coverage of the DIPAC presentation, see pages 32-33. Moving on to remaining DINA business, Williman announced that DINA would be providing committee updates on a regular basis through a “DINA Dashboard” column in The Daniel Island News. He also reported that a new “transition committee” was being formed for the purpose of researching and facilitating the process of transitioning Daniel Island from a community that is developer-managed to one that is resident- managed. DINA is seeking volunteers for that new committee, as well as all others. Stepping briefly to the podium, City of Charleston Councilman Gary White stated that he had met for an hour the previous week with Mayor John Tecklenburg to discuss current Daniel Island area projects and deliver to the new mayor a brief history on the community’s initiatives and concerns. “I’m glad to say that he’s on board with all the projects we have going on,” expressed White, “and he is prepared to help us move forward without any stumblings.” Updating DINA on several capital projects, White began with the Wando boat landing. Following a late March meeting with officials from the City of Charleston, Berkeley County, and the Department of Natural Resources, it was determined that the City will manage the construction project – which is expected to commence in 2017 – and Berkeley County will ultimately manage the day-to-day operations of the boat landing, White reported. Other Daniel Island projects addressed by Councilman White included an August 2016 expected completion for the new pavilion at Freedom Park, the commence- ment of a shoreline stabilization project along the Wando River, an April 11 delivery of first-run planning documents for an island community center, continued enhancements of Governors Park, replacement of Daniel Island trail and bridge lights, and the City’s receipt of full tree pruning responsibility following a multi-year partnership with the DINA tree trimming committee. Speaking on the latter, tree trimming committee chair Bob Sauer confirmed that his group’s duties had been turned over to the City of Charleston as of March 31. He also explained that residents with trees of concern can contact the City to determine if the tree needs to be removed. If it does, the homeowner incurs the cost of the replacement tree, but the City will pay for the old tree removal and installation of the replacement. Sauer suggested that a resident pruning clinic could be in the works, provided there is sufficient interest expressed. Land use and zoning chair Clyde Rush reported that the addition of two proposed apartment projects (Four Corners adjacent the BB&T building and the 210 River Landing property) would bring the number of apartment complexes under development on Daniel Island to seven, yielding 1,368 additional apartment units and approximately 2,700 new island residents. As the final speaker of the evening, new safety committee chair Marie Delcioppo introduced herself and indicated that she has already met with City officials regarding island safety initiatives. She was pleased to announce that the new school safety program would commence on April 11, and that volunteers were trained and ready to man their morning and afternoon posts with bright orange flags to bring more awareness to both drivers and students. Delcioppo also explained that the safety committee would operate with four sub-committees going forward, each of which was in need of volunteers: 1) school safety patrol, 2) pedestrians and cyclists, 3) new developments and initiatives, and 4) maintenance. Residents interested in joining DINA and/ or participating on a committee can visit the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association website, www.dineighborhoodassociation. org, or contact Williman at president@ dineighborhoodassociation.org. eXeCUtIVe OFFICe SPaCe for lease on Daniel Island Gr ra eat te Call Sue @ 345-1563 or 856-1999 PRIME LOCATION AT CORNER OF SEVEN FARMS AND RIVER LANDING DRIVES REPRESENTING YOU IN REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS ON DANIEL ISLAND AND THROUGHOUT THE LOWCOUNTRY. That means putting on great classes “that are worth your money and deliver the results you are looking for,” she added, whether that’s weight loss, toning, conditioning, stress relief, or just doing something positive for yourself. In addition to classes, the new space will also offer high end athletic apparel for sale. Sarah and Ben have always made fitness an important part of their lives since they met more than six years ago. As she writes in one of her blog posts for the studio, the pair enjoyed a hike along the Potomac River on their first date, and a jog around DC landmarks the next day. They hope their new venture on Daniel Island helps clients “find their fit” when it comes to living healthy mind, body and soul. “Fitness was an immediate and important point of connection for us, but, importantly, it was never just about wanting to ‘look good,’” writes Sarah. “Sure, that’s usually a great upside of a consistent exercise routine, but, what we care most about is how we feel - the energy we have - when we’re fit. As we have experienced in both our personal and professional lives, fitness is a catalyst - a regular habit that gives us the energy we need to do the things we really want to do; to be the person we really want to be.” For more information on Fit Culture, including a list of upcoming classes, visit their website at www.fitculture.org. It’s time to get pumped, Daniel Island! When it comes to fitness offerings, there’s a new game in town that promises to take healthier living to a whole new level. On April 1, Daniel Island residents Sarah and Ben Sands celebrated the grand opening of their new Fit Culture studio, located at 186 Seven Farms Drive next to Tropical Smoothie Cafe. On tap in the studio this month are classes for power yoga, cardio kick-boxing, high intensity interval training, pilates stick, barre and more. According to a recent Fit Culture blog post by Sarah, their goal is to have all clients leave feeling alive, energized, strong, happy and peaceful. “Our idea was to bring world class fitness to a world class community,” said Sarah. The couple moved to the island from Washington DC, where Sarah still owns a specialty fitness studio. After relocating to this area, they decided Daniel Island could benefit from the same type of endeavor. “The specialty fitness studios are really trending upwards,” she added. The unique thing about the new studios is they really have a community vibe. They find friends there, go with their friends, and it’s a place where they can hang out, and do something healthy other than eating and drinking.” To determine whether the venture would fly on Daniel Island, Ben and Sarah turned to the community for some feedback. While enjoying outdoor recreation time with their young son, Jack, they did some “ad hoc” See fit culture on PAGE 17 interviews on the playground with other parents. In Uganda, Grace was protected when violent neighbors attempted to oust her from her home. Although Daniel Island residents Bill and Catherine Read don’t know these victims personally, they have taken their stories to heart. All three women found the help they desperately needed from Inter- national Justice Mission (IJM), the world’s largest global anti-slavery organization dedicated to investigating and intervening on behalf of victims of oppression. Bill and Catherine, who moved to Daniel Island from Vermont in 2008, signed on as volunteers after attending an IJM event approximately 15 years ago. “What really hit us was that this isn’t just about rescuing individuals, from the eight year-old girls…to the women who have their land taken away in Africa, or wherever they may be,” said Bill, a management consultant for Accenture. “It’s also about affecting the justice systems in these countries and helping with the training of the police force…and then going after the perpetrators.” “Once I had heard the stories and knew the names and faces, I felt compelled to respond in some tangible way,” added Catherine, who works locally as a spiritual formation advisor to churches. “…IJM was already on the front lines, fighting some of the worst forms of violence, and their model was working…They partner with local authorities to rescue victims of violence, restore survivors, restrain criminals, and represent survivors in court.” The stories of Vasanthi, Griselda, and Grace are featured on the IJM website, along with a plethora of gut-wrenching statistics. According to IJM, some 2 million children are exploited in the global commercial sex trade, an estimated 36 million people are held in slavery today (one in four of those victims is a child), and about 90 percent of rural sub-Saharan Africans have no proof of ownership for the land where they live and work, making them susceptible to criminal acts. But there is good news to share. IJM reports that it is making a difference on all The International Justice Mission is working in 17 developing countries worldwide to protect s police abuse of power. Their efforts are making a difference on all fronts. Thanks to IJM, more fronts. Their work has resulted in bringing more than 900 perpetrators to justice and, over the last seven years, the rescue of some 2300 woman and children from trafficking. After just four years of work by IJM in Cebu, Philippines, there was a 79 percent drop in the number of minors available for commercial sex. In 2015 alone, IJM rescued 4100 victims of modern slavery and violent oppression and is currently protecting over 21 million around the world. Bill and Catherine were so moved by the progress of IJM that they began working about a year ago to bring an inspirational program to the Lowcountry that will raise awareness about the organization and its worldwide efforts. On Sunday evening, April 17, at Second Presbyterian Church on Meeting Street in downtown Charleston, IJM will host the “Charleston Concert for Justice” as part of its 2016 Art Music Justice Tour. Dubbed in a press release as “an excit- ing night of music and stories for a better world,” the concert will feature acclaimed Christian music singer/songwriters Brandon Heath, Sara Groves, and Jenny & Tyler. “Human trafficking is coming to the forefront of America’s consciousness,” said Heath, a Grammy nominated artist. “If we can use our talents and our voices we can inspire people to awareness and action. Nobody is more effective than IJM in the fight against slavery.” “We’re honored to share the stage with some of our favorite songwriters and join in a conversation about the global reality of injustice and the heroic, sometimes miraculous, stories of redemption and freedom,” added duo Jenny & Tyler. “In a world of bad news, it is a joy and a privilege to bring these incredible stories of rescue to people around the country,” said Groves, a seven time Dove award nominee. “This is Good News! And it’s good music! I wanted to gather artists whose lives and art point to the redemption of all things. I’m looking forward to this tour!” The event also serves another important purpose, noted Bill. The effort has brought together some 30 churches in the Charleston region to further the cause. “This cross-denominational partnership is special,” he said. “It’s bringing many people together, all with a common interest in the fight against human trafficking, which is at the core of a lot of this, as well as the violence that occurs, and the slavery that often results…the extent of the problem is far more than what many people recognize.” “I was horrified to discover the magnitude of the problem,” added Catherine. “…Because laws are rarely enforced in developing countries, criminals continue to Featuring Sara Groves, Brandon Heath, and Jenny & Tyler Second Presbyterian Church 342 Meeting Street - Charleston For tickets or additional information, visit www.artmusicjusticetour.com. abuse the powerless at a particularly high rate without fear of consequences.” Both Bill and Catherine are strong believers in the IJM mission and are confident that the community will turn out to support the event on April 17 at Second Presbyterian, which is located just about 100 yards away from Mother Emanuel Church, the site of a shooting resulting in the tragic death of nine church members in the summer of 2015. Charleston has proven to be resilient and strong, noted Bill, and deeply committed to healing and restoration. The Reads hope the upcoming concert will inspire people to get involved in the IJM fight, so that victims like Vasanthi, Griselda and Grace, will not have to suffer. “I think the trajectory of the impact that’s occurring here is wonderful,” added Bill. She told the sports journalists who gathered for her coronation as the 2016 Volvo Car Open champion that she was in a hurry. Stephens defeated Russian Elena Vesnina 7-6 (4), 6-2 Sunday on center stage, which happened to be the sun-drenched but windswept Billie Jean Stadium court. Now, she was in a hurry to catch a flight that departed Charleston International Airport at 6:45 p.m. Sunday night. She was headed back to Los Angeles so she could finally sleep in her own bed after five grueling weeks on the road as part of the WTA tour. To be honest, Stephens had an alternative mode of transportation back to the West Coast. But she didn’t know about it until the awards ceremony. It might not have been faster than a jet, but the interior was more luxurious. She picked up a check for $128,000 and the keys to a blue Volvo V60 Polestar, which costs north of $60,000. “Did you all know I was going to get a car?” Stephens asked reporters in the press room after her win. “Me neither. A “look” at the theatre site plans, and a mark of distinction The DIPAC champion began by explaining that the renderings that have been used to represent the project came from a collaboration with students from the Clemson School of Architecture back in January 2015. These visuals were created for the purpose of “glossy marketing,” and are not meant to reflect the ultimate design of the center. Local, professional architects will be contracted for the project in the months ahead. Going on to address the location of the DIPAC, Gould joked, “We haven’t even built, and we’ve moved!” As recently as ninety days ago, the plan was to build on River Landing Drive, behind the UBS building. But with another commercial buyer interested in that same parcel, Daniel Island Company President Matt Sloan suggested DIPAC’s placement on Island Park Drive across from Ristorante LIDI and Laura Alberts would be better suited to the kind of visibility and accessibility the center will seek. The contract for the land has been executed, and closing on this property is expected to take place in early July 2016. Next, Gould detailed some of the unique attributes that would be afforded the DIPAC as a League of Resident Theatres (LORT) Jennifer Johnston Daniel Island Performing Arts Center founder and CEO Mary Gould addresses questions from the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association. facility. As the only theatre in the state of South Carolina with that distinction (the next closest of the 72 nationwide are located in Chapel Hill, Atlanta, and Sarasota), the Daniel Island PAC would be a true destination theatre. With the prestigious LORT designation, the regional outfit would incubate shows for Broadway, enjoy Tony Award eligibility, and pay its performers Broadwaylevel equity wages. “Actors in Charleston will finally be able to make a living at their craft,” Gould pointed out. “This is huge. This is going to value our artists as they should be valued.” DIPAC shows will be cast with, and produced by, primarily local talent. Jennifer Johnston A map indicating the original location of the DIPAC, and the new home property, on which the theatre company is expected to close in early July. Artistic – and economic – impact of the theatre While the anchor tenant of the DIPAC will be the LORT theatre, operating under Gould’s South of Broadway Theatre Company, the facility will also be available for other local arts organizations. With a main theatre space of 444 seats, it will have an intimate feel and support productions that cannot take place in larger venues. Along with plays and musicals, DIPAC will host scores of other events, such as dance performances, film festivals, speaker series, and art movies. There will also be a 99-seat “black box theatre” with a flexible configuration, and this area will be available for meeting use as well. The design for the DIPAC is also expected to include other rentable spaces and catering kitchens. The economic impact for Daniel Island and the surrounding Charleston area is expected to be significant. Gould shared that the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia, which is arguably the best comparable LORT facility to that which will result here in Daniel Island, yields a $34 million annual impact for its community. (As a comparison, Gould notes that the annual economic impact of the recent Volvo Car Open tennis tournament is approximately $30 million.) The DIPAC will also have a department dedicated to theatre education, including a full complement of classes for all ages and See dipac on PAGE 33 April 14 - 20, 2016 ■ The Daniel Island News thedanielislandnews.com DIPAC IS GAINING MOMENTUM From DIPac on PAGE 32 across such disciplines as acting, dancing, and voice. Special outreach will be provided through South of Broadway Theatre Company’s “My Ticket to the Arts” program, which provides event tickets to at-risk youth and their families. Gould will continue to offer her 2005-founded “Summer in the City” artistic residency summer program through the new theatre, allowing young performers to “polish” their talent during a month at The Juilliard School in New York City. And DIPAC will hold three two-week summer camp sessions as well. The DIPAC’s way forward Over the past six months, Gould has been holding focus groups and assembling a 26-person Advisory Committee in an effort to ensure that the project moves forward in a manner most embraced by its neighborhood stakeholders. In terms of fundraising, the DIPAC Founders’ Circle was introduced in the fall of 2015, with “patron” giving levels ranging from $50 to over $10,000. The Founders’ Circle is closing in on its first fundraising goal. Gould explained that the overall project is well into Phase 3, which serves primarily to raise the initial $1 million needed to purchase land, complete regulatory and architectural requirements, and begin construction. The DIPAC Advisory Committee has begun the process of selecting a capital campaign manager to oversee the procurement of the additional $9 million needed to complete the project as it moves into Phase 4. The DIPAC is projecting a 2019-20 inaugural season. Gould stated that several corporate sponsors have expressed interest in helping to fund the new theatre, provided they are able to ascertain that the community is “totally in favor” of it. “When I say ‘supporting the project,’ I’m not just talking about monetarily,” she clarifies. “I’m arts 33 Jennifer Johnston Members of the DIPAC Advisory Committee assist Gould with the DINA presentation... and model the “founders’ circle” tee shirts. talking with your probation, your enthusiasm, your excitement. That is as important to us as any donation we will ever get. We need to know that the Daniel Island community is behind us.” Addressing various questions from the DINA audience, Gould stated that the LORT designation is maintained through box office receipts, regular season ticket prices are expected to be around $55 per seat per show, and the property will allow for the City-mandated one parking spot for every six theatre seats. She also shared that the DIPAC will be casting South Carolina actors alongside “some really well-known names” in an effort to help those local artists build their networks, and an in-house playwright lab will encourage new works. The new DIPAC website will be up and running within a couple of weeks; in the meantime, a temporary site is available for Founders’ Circle registration: www.danielislandpac.com. Lastly, a “Have One on Us!” cocktail party fundraiser is taking place at the Daniel Island Club’s Ashley Cottage on May 3 at 6 p.m. Suggested Gould, “Come and drink, but bring your checkbook, too!” 843.471.2064 843.926.3450 • WWW.UNDERPRESSURE.COM • SingleFamilyHomes • CleaningandStrippingof •HomeownerAssociations decks, docksandfences • Multi-familycommunities • Poolconcreteand • Commercialproperties tenniscourts • Guttercleaning • Sidewalksanddriveways Renee Reinert Pote 843.478.7875 Michelle Roberts Walsh 843.940.8688 IRON GATE REALTY PROUDLY PRESENTS 643 ISLAND PARK DRIVE CALL FOR YOUR PRIVATE TOUR OF THIS HOME NOT YET PUBLISHED ON MLS.
