SEPTEMBER, 2014 The best jazz at the best prices: CDs, DVDs, LPs, books and more. NEW RELEASE OF THE MONTH ZOOT SIMS / JIMMY ROWLES QUARTET Live in San Francisco 1978 ALL TRACKS PREVIOUSLY UNISSUED ! FOG-143390 16.99 € This release presents a never before heard live performance by the wonderful quartet of Zoot Sims, Jimmy Rowles, Bob Cranshaw and Mousey Alexander. It includes versions of well-known standards, but also less familiar tunes, like Neal Hefti’s “Legs” and Krzysztof Komeda’s theme song from Roman Polanski’s classic film Rosemary’s Baby, on which Sims switches to soprano sax. Another highlight is Jimmy Rowles’ elegant trio version of his own composition “The Peacocks”, later popularized in vocal versions as “A Timeless Place”. Zoot’s old pal Al Cohn is added to the quartet for two final tunes, and he plays alone with the same rhythm section on two further tunes from the same concert added here as a bonus. The albums were so successful that the pianist would repeat the formula many times in subsequent years. This edition compiles the first three volumes of Play Bach (Decca 40.500, 40.502 & 40.507). Also included on this 2CD set is the the same trio’s following album, Jacques Loussier joue Kurt Weill (RCA Victor 541.062), on which they perform classic songs by the famous German composer. This release presents the complete Lee Konitz albums You and Lee (Verve MGVS6131), and Lee Konitz Meets Jimmy Giuffre (Verve MGVS6073). These were Konitz and Bill Evans’ earliest studio collaborations: on the first LP the pianist only played on one of the two sessions (Jim Hall replaced him on the other one), while on the second Evans was featured throughout the entire album. Both works were taped in 1959, and although Konitz and Evans had been previously recorded together in a concert setting, and would be taped in the same fashion during a 1965 European tour, their only other studio LP collaboration was the pianist’s 1977 album Crosscurrents. The great Jimmy Giuffre also participated on both records – on the first as arranger, and on the second as arranger and performer DIS-143380 / 9,99 € INCLUDES 12 -PAGE BOOKLET TRACKS: 01 Introduction By Ken Jones 02 Congolese Sermon 03 Cathy’s Dilemma 04 Blues For Ramona 05 Weather Beat 06 Scandalizing 07 Appointment In Ghana 08 Penny Blue 09 Boopie 10 The Thing * 11 White Cobra* 12 New Time Shuffle* Total time: 74:55 min. Employing a two-horn front line (trombone and tenor saxophone), the group’s sound was rooted in hard bop, with an emphasis on R&B and soul. They would shorten their name to “The Crusaders” in 1971, when they decided to adopt a jazzfunk style. This set is unique among the group’s recordings because of the presence of bassist Victor Gaskin, who replaced The Crusaders’ first bassist, Jimmy Bond. Two songs from the same engagement not present on the original LP (“Penny Blue” and “Boopie”), as well as three tracks from a later session also featuring Gaskin have been added here as a bonus. Accompanied by pianist Tim Ray, bassist Dave Zinno and drummer Jim Gwin throughout—and joined by album producer Duke Robillard on acoustic guitar on “Them There Eyes” and “God Bless the Child”—Hamilton might as well be singing. His delivery is smooth, seemingly effortless and full of perfectly minted phrases. - Owen Cordle, JazzTime Magazine. Recorded at Lakewest Recording Studio, West Greenwich, RI, February, 2012 01. Now, as then, Whitaker and company address the leaderís five originals and six arrangements with an old-school feel and a 21st century attitude. A big band can be one of the finest examples of a jazz as an art form, a framework that achieves a balance of precision, unity, focus, and personal expression. Togetherness is firmly in the tradition of the classic post-Swing Era big bands. That was a transitional time where big band jazz became less a dancer’s music and more a listener’s music yet still retained the joie de vivre and grand, compelling swing of the great jazz orchestras. Yardbird Suite jessica williams WITH LOVE Through decades of performances and recordings, pianist Jessica Williams has displayed a riveting personal voice full of virtuosity and surprise, building a legendary status among jazz piano aficionados. On “With Love,” Williams felt the desire to simplify, presenting a series of pieces that were beautiful and without guile, simple and lovely and heartfelt in the extreme. While still rooted in jazz, she relies less on technique and improvisation and more on emotive depth, melodic purity and space, as she delivers time-honored classics, including “My Foolish Heart,” “I Fall in Love Too Easily,” and “Somewhere.”. Lathe of Heaven is his ECM leader debut. Turner leads a quartet of kindred spirits here, often entwining long serpentine lines with risingstar trumpeter Avishai Cohen, underpinned by the lithe and powerful rhythm section of bassist Joe Martin and drummer Marcus Gilmore. Candlelit tables, plush velvet banquets, antique chandeliers, and an historic full-length bar create a real jazz vibe. The room has seating for just over fifty, which ensures that every listener is close to the action. During Smoke’s renovation, the primary focus was on creating an unparalleled room for music...and it shows. The acoustics are some of the best anywhere. Smoke was named “Best New Jazz Club” in 2000 by New York Magazine. Now we can experience it through its first nine releases. Superb quality, awesomely crafted acousticwise. Cyrus Chestnut Jimmy Cobb Midnight Melodies The Original Mob SMK-142557 / 12,99 € This nearly perfect piano trio set by Cyrus Chestnut, captured at Smoke Jazz & Supper Club in New York, is his first live recording date. It retains all of the feeling and power of his thrilling live performances but also benefits from Smoke’s Steinway B that Cyrus claims is the best piano in the city. “It’s just my ticket. We connect. It’s warm and it’s sharp at the same time with a lot of earth in it. I like clubs like the Jazz Standard or Smoke, where you can sit down at the piano and get down-home, because that’s the kind of audience they attract.”. Brad Mehldau, Peter Bernstein, and John Webber were just getting their own careers started when they approached their teacher, Mr. Cobb, about working together as a quartet. It wasn’t a hard sell, as Jimmy knew from experience that they were special talents. Soon after, they got some gigs as Jimmy Cobb’s Mob and the rest is history. It’s a swinging affair that includes two of Jimmy’s original compositions, and one each by Brad, Peter, and John. Brimming with music and ideas, Orrin’s Liberation Blues debuts one of his most impressive projects yet, a new quintet lineup that includes Sean Jones, JD Allen, Luques Curtis, and Bill Stewart. The recording, made live at Smoke Jazz Club in New York City, occurred immediately following the passing of bassist Dwayne Burno, and the opening selections comprise the “Liberation Blues Suite” dedicated to his memory. Sean Jones, trumpet (except 7, 10, 11 & 12) JD Allen, tenor saxophone (except 10, 11 & 12) Orrin Evans, piano Luques Curtis, bass Bill Stewart, drums + Joanna Pascale, vocals (12 only) 1. Encore: The Night has a Thousand Eyes Return of the Jazz Communicators When Hayes reformed this band that he co-founded in the late ‘60s with Freddie Hubbard and Joe Henderson, Louis purposefully deviated from a conventional quintet lineup by featuring a vibraphone / tenor saxophone frontline. It’s the esteemed pair of Steve Nelson and Abraham Burton, respectively, and their chemistry with Louis, pianist David Bryant and bassist Dezron Douglas makes Return of the Jazz Communicators an inspired and rewarding set of music. Village Greene David Hazeltine Vincent Herring For All We Know The Uptown Shuffle SMK-142554 / 12,99 € Hazeltine is one of the important heirs to Walton’s piano tradition, so it is only natural that his gratitude and affection would be dominant themes on this recording. It is also a special record because it documents what is essentially the first collaboration between Hazeltine and tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake. It was a partnership that both enjoyed immensely and that worked particularly well with the rest of the quartet. It instilled in him a sense of responsibility to assume the mantle of a vital artistic tradition, which, for the past quarter century, is exactly what he’s done. With his no-holds-barred solos and unerring aesthetic compass, he’s made more than a few great records during that time, but his latest on Smoke Sessions, The Uptown Shuffle might just be his best yet. This recording was made on weekend of his 77th birthday party and the extra energy on these tracks is unmistakable. They revel in the complete Mabern experience, delivering everything from classic blues and swinging standards to delicate ballads and modal tempests. Harriott lived most of his musical life in London, and helped to build the British modern & free jazz scene. Even though he had become quite successful by the time the albums included here were recorded, he would die in relative obscurity in 1973 at the age of 44. Recently they’ve been featuring a type of music they call ‘free form’. This may lead some to believe that Harriott’s music has much in common with –and quite possibly has been influenced by –Ornette Coleman’s. There is certainly some similarity between their concepts, but there also are notable differences, the most noticeable being Harriott’s use of a piano in his group. Excellent percussion solos and duet work by Holder and Seamen highlight some tracks. The latter is a brilliant musician, one of the finest in Europe.” (Harvey Pekar) Specialist Jazz Shop in Barcelona • còrcega, 202, barcelona.
