Energy Commission of Nigeria’s Alternative Energy Projects And The Transformation Agenda 2011 – 2013* By Prof. E. J. Bala Ag. Director General/CEO Energy Commission of Nigeria dg@energy.gov.ng *Presented to the Honourable Minister, FMST, on 22nd April 2013 1. Objective • The objective of the alternative energy projects is the promote the use of alternative energy sources such as solar, wind and biomass, as well as energy efficiency and conservation best practices for increased energy access in Nigerian, particularly rural communities, to enhance security, provide clean water for drinking and sanitation as well as for lighting and enhance economic activities at night. 2. Mechanism of Achieving the Objective a. Study on the long term contribution of renewable energy sources to national energy supply mix up to 2030 using IAEA Models. b. Solar Streetlights: 12,073 Streetlights were installed in various communities across the country within the past two years, for the purpose of enhanced security and economic activities at night. c. Solar PV-powered water boreholes: 318 solar-powered water boreholes and water storage facilities were provided across various communities in the country, for clean water supply for drinking and sanitation. d. Solar PV Mini Grids: 9 Solar PV Mini Grids of capacities of 3kW and 5kW were provided to 9 rural communities in the country for lighting, enhanced security and economic activities at night. e. Wind Energy: 4 Pilot Wind Electricity & Solar PV and Wind Hybrid Systems were installed in various rural communities in the country, for electricity supply. f. Biomass: 2 Pilot biogas plants with human and animal wastes as feedstock, for production of cooking fuel at Kuje Prisons, FCT and NAPRIL, Zaria were installed. g. Energy Efficiency and Conservation: Greater public awareness on energy efficiency and conservation as an instrument for reducing energy demand, was achieved through workshops, road shows and replacement of incandescent lamps with energy efficient lamps. Energy efficiency standards are also being developed under the UNDP/GEF Energy Efficiency Programme, in collaboration with the ECN. h. Capacity Building of Youths: Over 360 Youth Corpers and other youths were trained on the fabrication and application of some alternative energy devices, for self economic empowerment. 3.
