PROGRAM MANAGER
Most people who recognize the name, Making The Ride Happen, know us as the
volunteer driver program from the Thompson Community Center. What many don’t
realize is that we do so much more than that.
We talk with each person to discover their needs and abilities, and then we refer them to the
transportation services available to them. MRH can assist people who want to learn how to
navigate the bus system by introducing them to a bus buddy or incorporating travel training.
Also, we can help people who qualify obtain the reduced fare card for the bus, issue senior
certifications for Valley Transit ll/Running and provide important information regarding that service. Contact
information for rural transportation providers is available. We primarily serve people in Outagamie, Calumet
and Winnebago County, but may be able to assist with referrals in other counties.
If you have personal needs for transportation or are exploring options for a loved one, please call or stop in to
chat with us. Our office is open M-F, 8:30-4:30. You can reach us at 920-225-1719 or toll-free at
1-888-200-0576. Please leave a message if we are not able to get to the phone and we will call you back as
soon as we are able. Or if you would like to stop in at the Thompson Community Center, please ask for MRH
at the front desk. We would love to meet you.

PHYSICAL HEALTH
MAY IS MELANOMA/SKIN CANCER DETECTION AND PREVENTION MONTH
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main
cause of skin cancer. UV damage can also cause wrinkles and blotches or spots on your skin. The good news is that skin
cancer can be prevented, and it can almost always be cured when it’s found and treated early. Lutheran Social Services/
Thompson Community Center is proud to participate in Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. During the
month of May, join us in taking action to prevent skin cancer and reduce the risk of UV damage.
Take simple steps today to protect your skin:
Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.
Cover up with long sleeves and a hat.
Check your skin regularly for changes.

through Thursday. The cost is $25. New clients pay an
additional $5 fee for their first visit. To arrange an appointment at the Thompson Center, please call 920-2251727.
The LSS registered nurse has received special training in
foot care, and can assess feet, toenails and lower legs, discussing any concerns that are observed. The assessment
includes pulses, inspection between the toes and the bottom
of the feet, and checking for sensation. The nurse uses both
a nippers and a dremel with specialized bits to trim and reshape the nails. A foot massage, including the application of
lotion finishes the toenail care.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Participants may donate
toward the cost of the service. Call 225-1722 to make an
appointment for foot care in the home. This service is for
Outagamie County residents age 60 and older who are not
able to use community foot care clinics throughout the county. LSS offers this service in collaboration with the Aging and
Disability Resource Center, Outagamie County Branch. This
service is funded by the Federal Older Americans Act.

health care providers as needed. The goal of the health
and wellness clinic is to provide easily accessible care in
order to encourage older adults and family caregivers to
proactively address their general health questions.
The Health and Wellness Clinic offers the following Prevention and Wellness services:

What is that Pain in my Joints?
Could it be arthritis? What are the different types of arthritis? There are two major types of arthritis -- osteoarthritis,
which is the "wear and tear" arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammatory type of arthritis that happens when the
body's immune system does not work properly. There are
other forms of arthritis such as: Gout, which is caused by
crystals that collect in the joints. Psoriatic arthritis, lupus,
and septic arthritis.
Osteoarthritis is also called degenerative joint disease or
degenerative arthritis. It affects about 33 million Americans
and is the most common chronic joint condition. It results
from overuse of joints but most commonly it is an aging
phenomenon. It can be the consequence of demanding
sports where joints may be injured or obesity, which places
increased load on weight bearing joints, If you were an athlete or dancer in high school or college, you may be wondering why your knee or hip aches when you climb out of
bed in the morning. Ask your doctor about osteoarthritis. It
can strike earlier in life with athletes or those who suffered
an injury in young adulthood. Osteoarthritis in the hands is
frequently inherited and often happens in middle-aged
women.
Osteoarthritis is most common in joints that bear weight -such as the knees, hips, feet, and spine. It often comes on
gradually over months or even years. Except for the pain in
the affected joint, you usually do not feel sick, and there is
no unusual fatigue or tiredness as there is with some other
types of arthritis
What Are the Symptoms of Osteoarthritis?
Symptoms of osteoarthritis, depending on which joint or
joints are affected, may include:
· Deep, aching pain
· Difficulty dressing or combing hair
· Difficulty gripping objects
· Difficulty sitting or bending over
· Joint being warm to the touch
· Morning stiffness for less than an hour
· Pain when walking
· Stiffness after resting
· Swelling of joint
· Loss of motion in a joint
11
PHYSICAL HEALTH
What Are Common Risk Factors for Osteoarthritis?
Risk factors for osteoarthritis include:
· Abnormal alignment of the joints
· Age
· Force or weight placed on one knee or hip
· Gender
· Heavy, constant joint use
· Joint injury by other types of arthritis
· Knee surgery
· Overuse or injury from athletics or other cause
· Obesity or being overweight
rheumatoid nodules. These often develop over joint areas
that receive pressure, such as over knuckles, elbows, or
heels. After a while the joints can become swollen and interfere with everyday tasks, such as: dressing, driving,
opening jars, and even walking and working. Fatigue can
be debilitating. Inflammation can cause reduced appetite
and weight loss. Fever, rash, and even involvement of the
heart or lungs and eyes can occur with rheumatoid arthritis.
These feelings and symptoms -- other than joint pain and
the inflammation in other organs -- happen when the damage done by the immune system spills over from the joints
to other areas of the body.
What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common type of inflammatory arthritis. More than 1.3 million Americans are affected.
According to the American College of Rheumatology, about
75% of those affected are women. In fact, between 1% and
3% of women are likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis in
their lifetime.
Okay what am I to do about it? There are medications
such as steroids or anti-inflammatories, physical therapy,
and in some cases, surgery. I have found that the flare ups
occur more often when the barometric pressure in the
weather changes. Have you ever heard someone who has
arthritis say things like “It’s going to rain or snow soon, my
hands or legs are killing me”, I know I have. My father had
rheumatoid arthritis, I have seen what this disease process
can do to the quality of life. All of these types of arthritis will
affect us in one way or another. Be aware and try to keep
moving as much as possible because muscles around the
joints can also become stiff if not used which brings a
whole new set of issues.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease. That
means that the immune system attacks parts of the body.
For reasons that aren't clear, the joints are the main areas
affected by this malfunction in the immune system. Over
time, chronic inflammation can lead to severe joint damage
and deformities. About one out of every five people who
have rheumatoid arthritis develop lumps on their skin called

MENTAL HEALTH
Pocket Mindfulness
A Game of Fives
Side by Side (920) 225-1713
Offers certified substance abuse outpatient treatment services and continuing care, with an emphasis on relapse
prevention. Program staff provide assessments, referrals,
individual and family counseling with outreach as needed.
Clients engage in a variety of activities offered at the
Thompson Community Center. Services offered through
various payment options: sliding-fee scale, insurance, and
suggested donations. For people 50 and older.
In this mindfulness exercise, all you have to do is notice five
things in your day that usually go unnoticed and unapreciated. These could be things you hear, smell, feel or see.
For example, you might see the walls of your front room,
hear the birds in the tree outside in the morning, feel your
clothes on your skin as you walk to work, or smell the flowers in the park, but are you truly aware of these things and
the connections they have with the world?
AA - meets Thursdays at 1:00 pm
– Are you aware of how these things really benefit your life
and the lives of others?
– Do you really know what these look and sound like?
– Have you ever noticed their finer, more intricate details?
– Have you thought about what life might be without these
things?
– Have you thought about how amazing these things are?
Older Adult and Caregiver Counseling Older Adult
and Caregiver Counseling (920) 225-1709
Provides confidential, licensed mental health counseling to individuals, couples/marital, families, and
groups at the Thompson Center and on an outreach
basis. Older adults and family caregivers of older
adults are eligible for this service. Depression,
anxiety, grief/loss, and caregiver stress are
examples of common issues addressed in counseling. Other issues are addressed as well based on
the participant’s need. Payment options include:
insurance and sliding fee scale.
Let your creative mind explore the wonder, impact and possibilities these usually unnoticed things have on your life. By
becoming mindful of who we are, where we are, what we
are doing and the purpose, if any at all, and how everything
else in our environment interacts with our being, we cultivate a truer awareness of being.
This helps us learn to identify and reduce stress and anxiety
and difficult, painful and perhaps frightening thoughts, feelings and sensations. Mindfulness exercises help center the
mind and restore balance to our lives.

& assistance to clients and their families in Outagamie, Calumet and Winnebago County. One way we can assist the
older adult in the Fox Cities is through a volunteer driver
program called “Making the Ride Happen.” For those clients who wish to use the public bus systems we can provide a “Bus Buddy” to assist them in greater coordination
and collaboration. Our hope is to improve access to transportation for those individuals who cannot drive any longer.
Do you like to drive? Enjoy helping others? Can you donate
½ day a month? We are always looking for volunteer drivers! Please contact us.
