Common Sense Solutions for Treating
Common, Painful Foot Complaints
More than 40 years ago, Hapad developed the manufacturing
technology that took felt skiving knives out of physicians’
hands and replaced them with convenient, correctly sized
and contoured, adhesive backed, natural wool felt orthopedic
foot devices.
The concept began when Theodor Hauser would visit his
brother, Dr. Emil D.W. Hauser, F.A.C.S., at his office in Chicago.
Dr. Hauser had a remarkable ability to skive felt shoe padding
by hand. The handmade soft orthotics created such a great
deal of acceptance and comfort, that together they decided to
offer them throughout the world. Theodor Hauser designed and
patented machinery to mass produce professional quality wool
felt shoe padding…at a price that almost everyone could afford.
The good news about Hapad products spread quickly. Physicians enthusiastically adopted the
procedures and recommended them to their patients. Hapad products are now recognized as one
of the most widely used and accepted conservative treatments for common foot complaints. The
success of Hapad continues under the direction of Theodor’s son, John Hauser, President & CEO.
Today, as always, we are a company dedicated to providing you with the most professional
quality products and the highest level of service…at the most affordable prices.
Why Wool Felt?
Hapad products are manufactured from virgin wool felt that is “wet” processed, not
needled. This manufacturing method yields a cleaner and longer lasting product. The
steaming process repeatedly compresses and intertwines abundant amounts of wool
fibers to produce a dense, durable and resilient material that remains naturally soft
and comfortable.
®
All Hapad products are 100% guaranteed. If for
any reason you are not completely satisfied, simply
return the unused merchandise within 60 days for
full credit. No questions asked!

If the shoe is worn
Examine the inside of the shoe near the metatarsal region.
Look for dark spots on the sole of the shoe that usually
correspond with pressure areas, sore spots and calluses
on the foot. Place front of selected metatarsal pad just
proximal to the dark spot in the shoe.
If the shoe is new
You can duplicate this wear spot by having the patient mark the painful area of their foot with
lipstick or a marker. Have them replace their shoes and take several steps to transfer this mark to
the sole of their shoe. Place the selected metatarsal pad just proximal to the dark spot in the shoe.

Pressure
Areas!
NOTE: A Metatarsal Pad is shown in the above photos, but the same fitting instructions
apply for all metatarsal varieties. When fitting pads, just reveal a small portion of the
adhesive on the back of the pad to test for a comfortable fit.
When using the Neuroma Pads
Use the same methods as above for locating the painful area
of the foot and the corresponding dark area in the shoe.
The smaller, teardrop-shaped Neuroma Pad should be placed a
little farther forward in the shoe, with the crest of the pad placed
just over the mark in the shoe. This will effectively spread the
metatarsals and relieve the painful “pinching” on the nerve.

Neuroma Pads
Interdigital Morton’s neuroma.
XX A smaller metatarsal pad designed to
be placed right between the affected

relieve the pinching on the nerve.
XX One size.
A neuroma is a painful
enlargement of nerve tissue
at the ball of the foot, generally
causing pain, tingling and/or
numbness in the adjacent toes.
Most frequently occurs between
the 3rd and 4th metatarsal heads.

Questions & Answers
Q: Will Hapad products fit
into regular shoes?
A: When you first look at our product
catalog, such a wide variety of wool felt
products may seem a little overwhelming.
We offer an assortment of pads because
there are so many different shoe styles. If
a certain pad does not fit comfortably in the
shoe, try another variation of the product.
A neutral sole will produce the best results.
However, if the shoe has some built-in
support, you can compensate by using
a smaller size pad.
Q: How long will Hapad
products last?
A: Hapad products should last the life of
the shoe. Of course, this depends on the
size, weight, occupation and activities of
the patient. Generally, when feet begin to
feel tired or painful again, it is time to
replace the pad because some support
may have been lost.
Q: Can Hapad products
be washed?
A: Because Hapad products are
manufactured from 100% natural wool
felt, we do not recommend washing them.
Some users have told us that they have
successfully washed the pads, either
attached in the shoe, by hand or
by machine. We suggest replacing
old, soiled pads with new ones.
12
Q: How do you remove Hapad
products from the shoe?
Hapad products are intended to become a
permanent part of the shoe. The adhesive is
intentionally aggressive so they will not "slip"
in the shoe when worn. To remove Hapad shoe
pads, begin at the back portion of the pad and
use your thumb to roll the pad loose. Do not try
pulling or lifting the pad out of the shoe. The
adhesive was made to “peel” loose. Once the
pad is removed from the shoe, roll away any
leftover adhesive before placing a new pad
in the shoe. Sometimes warming the pad with
a hair dryer or heat gun will help loosen the
padding.
Q: How do I know which size
to recommend?
A: There are suggested size charts listed in
our catalog. Not every foot will correspond to
the chart. Remember that “less is more”. Most
feet are extremely sensitive. Even though these
wool felt shoe pads are extremely comfortable,
they will feel foreign in the beginning. If the
patient has a flat foot, do not use a thick arch or
metatarsal pad to overcompensate. Start with
a thinner pad to gently support and eventually
strengthen the arches. Down the road, you
may want to gradually increase the amount of
correction, but this is not normally necessary.
If the patient complains that the pad “feels like
a lump”, this usually indicates that the pad is
too thick. Use a smaller size.
NOTE: Hapad products are designed to be placed in shoes,
NOT directly on the foot.

Questions & Answers
Q: How can our practice justify
the cost of using Hapad products?
A: Hapad products are so inexpensive, it is questionable
whether it is worth the effort to apply for reimbursement,
and furthermore, requests are often rejected.
Many insurance companies consider these to be comfort
items rather than therapeutic devices and many patients
expect to get them for free. While Hapad products are
very affordable, they are also proven very effective.
The out-of-pocket cost of these products is nominal
when compared to a deductible cost for expensive
custom inlays.
The benefits of using these products in your practice
include reduced overall costs for patient care, as well
as improved patient satisfaction. This will certainly also
attract family and friends to your practice, resulting in
additional business. The bottom line will reflect more
patient visits billed, resulting in higher net profits.
As a recommendation to avoid any financial impact on
your practice, payment should routinely be made as the
patient is checking out of your office. Normally, physicians
will add a nominal mark-up for their time and services.
If the patient insists, a form can be filed with their
insurance company in case there is some reimbursement
due. In general, prefab devices will not be reimbursed
and the cost of filing these forms on a routine basis
does not justify the response.
