Teachers, office staff and “Charting a course to a brighter tomorrow.” administrators contributed Negley Elementary has incorporated the elements of a proven design with the latest considerations of instructional architecture. Since the floorplan is based on the Rosalio Tobias design there are many similarities. The differences lie in the refinement of that design and the expansion to provide additional space for future growth. Extra classrooms were added and the roof design was changed to allow for a more energy efficient HVAC system. This also provided additional storage space. The office area has been re-designed to making modifications in the design and suggestions to assist in instruction, safety and aesthetics. May 2006 Helping Keep Neighborhood Pets From Being Pests By Sandy L Stevens Almost everyone loves having a pet…a dog, a cat, a hamster, or a fish, just to name a few. With pet ownership comes great responsibility, not only for the care and well being of the pet but also a responsibility to other residents, especially with dogs. Resident complaints regarding dogs in the neighborhood are on the rise, especially as the neighborhood grows. Though there may be other issues, the three that are consistently brought to the attention of the committees and the HOA are: (1) dogs off leash, (2) waste pick up, and (3) noise. The first issue, dogs off leash, is not only a violation of the HOA ordinances, but is a violation of Hays County and City of Kyle ordinances. Hays County has begun a campaign to crack down on dogs off leashes, taking the animal to the pound and citing the owner. In Plum Creek, we have very few dogs that are truly running around the neighborhood without supervision. We do, however, have many residents who allow their dogs off the leash on the trail or at the parks. Several residents have been bitten by dogs that are with the owners but are not restrained on a leash. Someone being bitten is the worst scenario, but dogs off a leash can cause other annoyances, such as running in front of bicycles causing accidents, encroaching on those who may not be “dog friendly”, or knocking over a small child. It may also endanger the dog if they veer into traffic and are injured by a moving vehicle or run in front of a bicycle on the trail. The second issue, waste pick up, is quickly becoming a major issue, not only in resident’s yards but also on the trail and in the parks. Please carry a plastic bag with you when taking your dog for a walk and pick up any waste your dog may deposit, even if it is to the side of the trail. The waste causes significant concerns, especially during the hot weather, not only because of the smell but also with insects. Third is incessant barking or noise. Due to the nature of most neighborhood designs, homes are closely spaced. Dogs barking for long periods of time or at inappropriate times of the day (late at night or very early in the morning) may cause discomfort for the neighbors. Complaints may be filed with the HOA using the appropriate form, available on the community website, www.plumcreektxhoa.com, or in your HOA handbook you received when you moved in. Be sure that you have all of the information requested on the form, such as the address of the offending resident and specifics of the incident. Your name and information will be kept confidential by the HOA. You also have the right as a resident to approach anyone you see that is in violation of the rules and ask them to comply. In addition, Hays County has a link on their site that outlines the laws governing dogs off leash. Go to http:// sheriff.co.hays.tx.us and click on Animal Control then County Ordinance for more information. The City of Kyle has Animal Control officers, and may be reached at 268-3232. We are also trying to get feedback from the community regarding these issues. Please fill out the survey in this issue of the Plum Creek Press (on page 16) or go online at www.plumcreektxhoa.com and fill out the survey online. Your participation is appreciated! 210 South Main Street Buda, TX 78610 (512) 312-1947 At the corner of Main & FM 2770 Award winning Smoked meats Homemade sides & Tasty treats! Owner/director Blaine Hollub shares about his family-owned and operated business: We are now entering our third year of providing private music instruction in our area. With a background in instrumental, voice, and Kindermusik education, we are able to provide private individual and group music instruction for all instruments and voice for all levels and all ages. I am a veteran music educator, have a love for music, and a passion to make music education experiences available for EVERYONE. I’ve been involved in music education for over 30 years, working with students of all ages. These years of involvement have allowed me to see time and again first-hand how the touch of music on our lives impacts us forever. Most recently before opening Plum Creek Music Center I spent time influencing the lives of students through music as a band and choir director at Saint Gabriel’s Catholic School in Austin, as choir director for San Marcos High School and as district choir director for San Marcos CISD. At Plum Creek Music Center our mission is to provide quality, comprehensive music education opportunities for the whole family driven by our philosophy that music is a special gift to mankind. I feel that as teachers we have two goals. First, we want to empower students to teach themselves. We have 30 minutes to an hour with each student once each week. Our role is to equip them with the information and tools to continue the learning during the 7-day period between our lessons. Second, we want students to discover the joy of music. By instilling in students a passion for music so strong that they love what they do both in our studio and at home, we want them to HAVE FUN as they learn a lifelong skill! Currently, the staff of Plum Creek Music Center consists of my wife of 29 years, Kathy, my daughter, Jenny Sandoval and myself. Kathy assists as business manager and with public relations. Jenny teaches piano, voice, guitar, bass guitar and clarinet. She is a 2002 graduate of Southwest Texas State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in English literature with an emphasis in creative writing and a minor in music. She is resident artist with Plum Creek Music Center. She is a very prolific songwriter and performer, having most recently released her second CD recording of original songs and music. She performs regularly at area music venues and will be playing Plum Creek’s Front Porch Days. She is also employed with Hays CISD as music teacher at Tobias Elementary, and she serves as the minister of music for Kyle United Methodist Church. At Plum Creek Music Center we are now serving almost 70 students with teaching times available Monday through Saturday each week. Whether you are interested in gaining a new skill or brushing up in an area from your past, I am sure you will find what you need with us. Summer is fast approaching and we will be offering some very exciting special events and programs, which are a bit off the usual path. We will once again be slating Kindermusik classes for the children ages newborn through eight years. We will also be offering some special summer “Rock” camps for those students interested in sprouting their wings with some small rock ensemble experiences. Couple this with our ongoing, growing private lesson programs, Plum Creek Music Center is the place to turn for all your music education needs. We will be having Summer Registration during the Plum Creek Front Porch Days on May 6. See our ad in other parts of this newsletter for information about getting signed up for our summer enrichment opportunities. Also check out our website @ www.plumcreekmusic.com for more information about us, or better yet, give us a call @ 663-4877 or 262-7787 and make an appointment to stop by and get to know us. 5 Plum Creek Press 6 May 2006 Motherʼs Day Shopping Opportunity Comes To You! After all, they eat ticks, chiggers, termites, boll weevils, flies, fleas, cockroaches, and many other troublesome pests. However, they don’t stop there. They eat almost any young plant, baby animal, or beneficial insect or reptile, and they cause significant amounts of electrical damage by chewing through wires and invading electrical boxes. Not to mention, they seem strangely attracted to my toes… Fortunately, they have some natural controls, including lizards, birds, and beneficial nematodes, the worm-like microscopic organisms in our soil that eat white grubs, fleas, and the larvae of fire ants. Unfortunately, these natural controls don’t always keep the fire ants in check, and thus, we spend our summers battling the bugs. To start, treat the individual mounds. Drench each mound in boiling water, vinegar, soapy water, or a compost tea mixture called Garrett Juice from Garden-Ville. Alone, three gallons of boiling water eliminate them by almost 60 percent. However, you must be careful with the vinegar, soapy water, and boiling water, as they can all damage and burn your nearby plants and lawn. Thus, Garrett Juice proves the best tool. The mixture controls fire ants, and it nourishes your lawn and garden, too. You can purchase Garrett Juice at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Wal-Mart, and many local nurseries, or you can make your own Garrett Juice by combining 1 cup of compost tea, 1 tablespoon of blackstrap molasses, 1 tablespoon of liquid seaweed, and 1 tablespoon of natural apple cider vinegar per gallon of water. If you want to add an extra punch to your Garrett Juice, add 2 ounces of citrus oil to each gallon of water. Never use citrus oil alone, as it burns plants by itself. Always mix it with a compost tea, molasses, or another organic substance. For more information, please email us at landscape@plumcreektxhoa.com and check out www.dirtdoctor.com for more great tips for your lawn and garden.
