Sprung!
Release winter’s hold and jump into spring
Your neighbor’s giant camellia blushes pink under its bank of blooms. Your favorite baseball coach speculates
about rookie tryouts at spring training. Sunday newspaper supplements begin to bulge with swimsuit ads.
It’s the end of winter, friend. And it’s coming sooner than you think to an area near you...
I
n the West Texas Hill Country outside of Austin, spring means traffic
jams that have nothing to do with the daily commute. The
Bluebonnets are out. So are the Mexican Hats and the Indian
Paint Brush. As wildflowers take over the countryside and amateur
photographers contort from the back seat for a shot, another tourist
attraction starts to form in the city center. More than a million Mexican
bats migrate here, to hang from the underside of Austin’s Congress
Avenue Bridge, which just happens to house the largest (and most
entertaining) bat colony in North America. It’s a spring only Texas
could orchestrate.
Stay at Barton Creek Resort & Spa to appreciate Austin’s bumper crop
of outdoor bistro tables at Austin cafes. Antiques fill the wall-to-wall
vintage and specialty shops of South Congress (“SoCo”), and the
largest collection of farmers’ markets in the state opens crates of citrus,
peaches and herbs – early crops that inspire both our kitchen and spa.
Golf descends on Texas as well; the courses are both fresh and
ripe, which is why all of Texas’ top PGA tour events take place in
spring. Barton Creek’s multiple courses (two by Tom Fazio, one by
Arnold Palmer, and one by Ben Crenshaw) provide a variety of risks
and rewards.
Back east, on the Appalachian hillsides of Virginia, spring creeps down
the slopes like a shadow, following the gradual penetration of the light as
the sun climbs higher and higher into the sky each day. As the Virginia
Nightingale builds nests into local orchards, and the mountain laurel
slowly comes into bloom, thermal springs warm the locals with the steady
heat of Mother Earth.
The Homestead, our Hot Springs, Virginia resort, is home to the
Jefferson Pools, famous for their soothing effects and perfect following
a day of spring pursuits – antiquing, hiking, fly-fishing, horseback
riding, bird watching, falconry, mountain biking, hay-riding, and so
much more. If winter has you feeling cooped up, nothing will get you
back outdoors faster and with more variety and satisfaction than a
spring stay at the Homestead.
In Southern California, it is another story. Residents need a calendar
to sense the seasons are changing; but offshore the whales know it.
Migrating from Baja to Alaska, they pass right by, and whale watching
tours are a big local event. At the San Diego Zoo, spring brings a
figurative stork who in turn delivers baby chimps or emus or tapirs –
one never really knows much in advance what surprise is in store.
Everything is a surprise this spring at the Hotel del Coronado,
where Beach Village, the Sunset Bar at 1500 OCEAN (the signature
restaurant), the incredible Spa, Fitness Center, and Windsor Club
Cottage are all new or entirely renovated. To top it off, there’s a
membership plan now as well, allowing one to feel more at home at
The Del than ever. Spring is the ideal time to enjoy it all before the
wedding parties and crowds arrive.
Up the road at La Costa Resort, “birdie” may not mean what you
think. Chicks, goslings, and ducklings poke their beaks between the
tall grasses that line course creeks as their mothers try to protect
them from hooks and slices. Young gulls practice gliding on the
warming air currents, while beside the whitewashed buildings
bougainvillea twists to catch the light. This is the quintessential
Southern California spring – golf, followed by spa, followed by
golf, followed by spa, with garden-fresh organics and regional
wines as a fine-dining intermezzo.
Meanwhile, in the California desert, the Greater Roadrunner appears
a little cuckoo and the smaller Cactus Wren comes out to broadcast its
big voice, but the real star of spring is above it all – the ever-lengthening
sunset, streaked with high intensity watercolors half-painted, halfsplashed across an endless sky. Winter’s end turns into spring’s infinity.
Our Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa is entirely reborn with
a brilliant, resort-wide renovation. It is the new standard in Palm
Springs area resort-going, and the possibilities for spring play
are endless. Read more on page 5.
We hope that as soon as the daffodils announce the arrival of spring, you’ll be off to a
place where you and those you enjoy most can appreciate life to the fullest.

Rancho
Reinvented
It’s the most incredible water feature the California desert has ever seen.
Splashtopia is a pair of 100-foot waterslides, a Jacuzzi whirlpool, pop-jets, a waterfall, and
a beach, surrounded by a lazy river. It’s just one feature of a resort-wide renewal at
Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa, and it will spoil you for sitting poolside anywhere else.

F
resh from a $35-million spending spree,
our resort designers have brought
Rancho Las Palmas gracefully to a higher
plane. We can’t wait to introduce you to all
we’ve just unveiled in stylish Rancho Mirage, the
posh community beside Palm Springs, California –
Every guestroom is enhanced with contemporary
designer finishes of the finest quality, upgraded
electronics, new linens, color refinements, and
accent pieces.
Our new porte cochere entrance and arched
lobby make arrival a special event, after which
the warm desert hues and timeless atmosphere
invite you back to spend time meeting up with
friends or chatting with our concierge staff.
Now open: bluEmber, our signature restaurant,
is lighting up the desert dining scene both inside
at handsome carved tables, and outdoors
around flickering firepits on the adjoining plaza.
Wednesday through Saturday evenings, we add
live music to the menu.
The new R Bar has a Rat-Pack-cool vibe and
an early buzz to match, with plenty of leather
seating, a pool table, and flat-screen TVs to add
a touch of sophistication to Big Game day.
Also new, and with an extensive inventory,
Las Palmas Boutique features fashion from
Tommy Bahama to Brighton.
Add these to our existing features, such as the
big-league challenges of our 27-hole golf course,
our 25-court state-of-the-art tennis complex, our
restaurants and lounges, and 240 acres of lakes,
gardens, and fountains and what could be missing,
except (if you’re reading this anywhere else) you?
Nourish your palette. At bluEmber, sample
complex and compelling dishes that appeal to your
taste yet depart from “the usual.” Borrow an idea or
two to try back home.
Reconnect with the kids. Start at Splashtopia,
our spectacular new swimming and recreation
complex, and then take a break as a family for juicy
burgers and cool tropical drinks at the Splash Grill
– all of it overlooking the 5th fairway. When you’re
ready for some alone time, take a dip in our adultonly Tranquility Pool.
Stick to your post-holiday resolution.
If you’re slenderizing, our Spa Café is your
empathetic partner, offering healthy, wholesome
treats and an espresso bar to help you safely
through those moments of temptation. Also, our
fitness center and Yamaguchi Salon are at the ready
to aid in your success.
Keep your finger on the pulse. We don’t
know anyone who wants to be out of touch with
colleagues, family, or their broker for very long. At
the Palms Café, you can check in via the Internet
while sipping your favorite Starbucks® latte for
a few minutes each day, and then resume your
holiday. Of course, if you’re an Internet junkie,
you can always take advantage of our high-speed
access from every room.
Focus, focus, focus. The beauty of our resort is
that it holds you in another world, apart from daily
distraction. So come here to give all your attention
to one thing – your backhand, your short game,
your romance, your family, your next novel, or your
business (we have 41,000 square feet of meeting
space). Our staff are experts at making your visit
into exactly the retreat you need.
Bask in the desert sun, and be among the first
to experience the spirit of renewal at our magnificent
Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa.
What’s at Rancho Las Palmas
for you?
Escape worldly stress and tension. Our
signature spa rests beneath endless skies, and can
soothe you with a nearly overwhelming array of
luxurious therapies that scrub, soak, stretch, press,
polish, penetrate, release, and restore both body
and spirit.
Get into the fresh air. Golfers and tennis
players have abundant opportunity to play here
as nowhere else, in a resort paradise dedicated
to recreation as a positive, energizing force of
renewal. Or rent a bike, horse, or Harley from
local suppliers.

10 Reasons
Top
to Visit Austin, Texas This Spring
1. SXSW Festival. Every spring, top music industry execs descend on Austin’s “South by
Southwest” festival to harvest the newest crop of future stars. Musical inspiration is richly
served across fifty stages between March 6 and 17, when visitors are the first to hear what
the nation will be listening to by the end of summer. There’s a companion film festival in
town at the same time.
2. Wildflowers. The Texas Hill Country erupts in color every spring, graced by gentle
Bluebonnets and fiery Mexican Hats. Bring your video cam to capture your sweetheart (or
kids and dog) in a classic fantasy romp through romantic fields.
3. Wine Trail. Unless you’re a local, it might seem odd that a Texas restaurant such as our
Barton Creek Resort Hill Country dining room should focus so obsessively on its cellar, to the
point of being singled out by Wine Spectator magazine; but the mystery is solved when you
discover the twenty-odd wineries nearby. Come sample them during the Texas Hill Country
“Wine and Wildflowers” event April 4-6 and April 11-13, 2008, or at the three-day Austin
Wine Festival May 24-26, 2008.
4. South Congress Avenue, or “So-Co” to Austinites, is home to antiques dealers, bistros,
quirky shops, mid-century furniture replicators, and just about anything that’s in the current
consciousness of décor- or collection-minded visitors. A must-stroll venue for those seeking a
sense of place (or in need of something special for the living room back home).
5. Performing Arts. It’s all the music you can imagine! Here, in the nation’s “live music
capital,” musical choices range from Baroque to Country to Cuban (and everything in
between), while ballet and touring Broadway shows provide additional dimension to the
city’s sophisticated yet casual cultural buffet.
6. Shopping. Where to begin? If you’re visiting from out of state, don’t miss the final markdowns on high-end Neiman Marcus fashions at Last Call. Want more? There are a dozenplus quality malls within easy reach. Foodies can take the daily tour at home-town Whole
Foods; and outdoor enthusiasts should check out the giant new Cabela’s just outside of town.
Above all, make time to shop for boots.
7. Art Galleries. Numbering more than you can count, local galleries feature paintings,
sculpture, regional pottery, glass, photography, jewelry, and folk art. On the weekends, start
at the Artists’ Market, a juried, ever-changing, outdoor event held each Saturday on West
6th Street.
8. Texas State Capitol and Grounds. It’s no surprise that Texas’ Renaissance Revival
structure is the largest state capitol in the country, a massive structure of red granite, all
quarried locally. The capitol staff offers daily 45-minute tours just a block from the state’s
notable history museum, which also offers tours as well as an IMAX theater.
9. Biking. Abundant bike trails make Austin accessible and fun. (This is where home-town
hero Lance Armstrong used to ride.) Beyond the city limits there is a network of mountain
bike trails in the surrounding Hill Country, just right for independent adventures.
10. Lyndon Baines Johnson National Historical Park. Less than an hour from Austin
one finds Johnson City, boyhood home of the larger-than-life 36th President. There you
can tour the collection that commemorates Johnson’s presidency during the tumultuous Civil
Rights and Vietnam era, visit his boyhood home, and even see the cabin his grandparents
lived in during the 1860s. From the visitor’s center, bus tours take guests to the LBJ Ranch,
once known prominently as the “Texas White House,” and since bequeathed by the Johnsons
to the American public and the national parks system.
Austin
Money magazine calls Austin, Texas the second-best place to live in America. MSN calls it the country’s “greenest” city.
And so many people call it home that Austin is now bigger than Miami, Seattle, or Washington, D.C.
All this stems from humble beginnings. Way back in 1839, a small village called Waterloo was overtaken by architects
and builders who transformed it into Texas’ national capitol. Our Barton Creek Resort and Spa is the area’s finest retreat.

Rancho Las Palmas
Rancho Mirage, California
If spring is about renewal and
rebirth, then our Rancho Las
Palmas Resort & Spa in the
California desert is the Capital of
Spring this year (See our story on
page 4). If you can tear yourself
away from our new Splashtopia
(and who would blame you if
you can’t?), you might do well
to sample our Golf Package this
spring for play on our 27 holes of
Bermuda grass. Designed by Ted
Robinson as an oasis, the course
is lined with six lakes and more
than 1,500 palm trees. Or come
for tennis at our Peter Burwash
International tennis center that
boasts 25 courts, 8 of which are
lit for nighttime play. Either way,
surround yourself with a sense of
spring’s rebirth at a resort that has
risen from special to spectacular.
Hot Happenings from each Resort
Beach Village - Coronado, California
With the introduction of Beach Village at The Del,
discerning travelers can now enjoy a new level of
luxury at the Hotel del Coronado. Special amenities
include Bose® surround sound systems and docking
stations, large flat-panel televisions, wireless Internet
and more. Beach Village at The Del cottages and
villas feature dining and living spaces with fullyequipped kitchens and gourmet-quality appliances,
cozy fireplaces, spa-style baths with soaking
tubs, spacious ocean-view balconies and private
terraces. Within this exclusive enclave, owners and
guests will also enjoy private pools and hot tubs,
personalized concierge service and private access
to the beach.
La Costa Resort and Spa - Carlsbad, California
If your golf game spends the winter in hibernation, give it
a spring tune-up at La Costa, where our courses, driving
range, and golf school can accelerate the return of a
healthy handicap. To keep your head in the game, choose
one of our La Costa suites lining the first fairway of our
North course. There are the obvious reasons for such
a choice – fairway views, spacious accommodations,
separate sitting area, soaking tub, and wide-screen
televisions – all the amenities you’d expect from us. But the
soul of these suites is found in their beautiful details, such as
arched windows that celebrate sunrise, eucalyptus trees that
gracefully frame daylight views, stylish furnishings offering
extreme comfort, and spa amenities in the bath. Our Golf
Suite package also includes the perfect spring inducement –
36 holes of golf during your stay.
Barton Creek Resort & Spa - Austin, Texas
Texas emerges from winter in the most
colorful ways, its fields softened by waves
of wildflowers and its cities warmed by
the return of festivals and farmers’ markets.
In March, locals celebrate the opening
of the Austin Farmer’s Market, the largest
in Texas. Then in April, a dozen festivals
center on arts, poetry, music, and food.
All this activity makes Barton Creek Resort
the perfect home base during spring,
where one can alternate between urban
attractions one day, a round of golf the next, and any number of other temptations the day
after that. Our bed and breakfast package is ideal – a delicious way to power-up in the
morning for any pursuit during the rest of the day.
The Homestead - Hot Springs, Virginia
From February 19 - April 4, 2008, the Homestead
invites you to pair up! Come along to enjoy the season
– husband and wife, father and son, best buddies,
whatever – because any recreational activity chosen
by one guest can be enjoyed by his or her traveling
companion for free. For instance, if one of you opts
for a massage, the other receives the same with our
compliments. If one of you signs up for horseback riding
or fly-fishing, the other comes along at no added cost.
Choose from golf, skiing, ice skating, horseback riding,
shooting, fly-fishing, hiking the Cascades Gorge, soaking
in the Jefferson Pools, bowling, or spa services. (Golf,
Vail Mountain Lodge & Spa - Vail, Colorado
Everything at Vail is about healthy mountain life,
and insiders know that from May until early June
visitors can enjoy beautiful, 65-degree days without
the usual crowds. Our Mountain Diva program,
run by Ellen Miller (the only woman to summit Mt.
Everest twice), takes full advantage of the season
by orchestrating outdoor activities designed to get
one into summer-ready condition. Ellen customtailors each visitor’s program to suit their ability,
from advanced fitness to not-yet-in-shape. Our
restaurant joins in with healthy fare, and our Vail
Athletic Club, complete with climbing wall and
spinning classes, operates under the motto “Get in
here to get better out there.” While Vail Mountain
Lodge & Spa is long on amenities, it’s short on
guest rooms – just 28. They go fast, so make your
Mountain Diva reservations early.
Meet the Family
Did you know that our sister company, ClubCorp, operates more than 100 private golf
and country clubs, and 55 private business and sports clubs in the U.S.? There is probably
one near you. Memberships in one club includes access to the others when you travel,
including complimentary golf and dining. There’s even a national concierge service that
provides access to tickets for sporting events, Broadway theater, private jets, and other
rarified privileges, not the least of which is savings on your future KSL Resort vacations.

Shop La Costa resort and spa
One can have only so much relaxation before it’s time to shop again. Our La Costa
merchants understand this, and are stocked with just the sorts of things that suit vacation
buying. For instance, Pinkilicious is the only Lily Pulitzer store in the San Diego area;
Audrey’s Closet and Audrey’s
Etc. offer one-of-a-kind boutique
fashions and designer accessories;
Coastal Dunes is headquarters for
the Men’s resort-look, featuring
Tommy Bahama’s casual fashions
and accessories for men. And of
course there are personal treats
available in our Spa Boutique,
as well as souvenirs within the
Marketplace Café, and everything
for the golf aficionado in our Golf.
Health and Happiness
Giving
Take a deep breath, hold it, and
consider spring. What do you sense
when you close your eyes – fragrant
air, abundant daylight, relief from
winter? Do you feel the sun’s warmth
penetrating into your muscles?
It’s a part of life to celebrate
achievement, special occasions, or
deservedness; yet it becomes more
and more difficult to find the right thing, particularly for those who have everything.
Where does one find a distinctive, significant, meaningful gift that sets apart not only
itself, but also the giver and the recipient? Our past guests answered
that question before we did – they began giving resort vacations,
spa treatments, and golf greens fees to their friends and family a few
years ago. We noticed, and now have a lovely gift card to make
it easier. Purchase one for a specific item, or choose one in any
denomination you like.
Transform these inspirations into
reality at our amazing new spa and
fitness center at San Diego’s premier resort, the Hotel del Coronado.
While any of our spa packages and fitness regimens are sure to lift
your spirits, nothing is quite as much fun as our instructor-led Yoga
on the Beach. An experience unlike any traditional yoga room, this
outdoor meditation and stretch is accompanied by the call of gulls, the
scent of salt air, and an unobstructed, limitless horizon. Or, if you’d
like to reach a “higher plane,” consider a visit to our Vail Mountain
Lodge, a Colorado venue all about healthy outdoor lifestyle. Either
way, you’ll find a nurturing spa, serious fitness center, healthful dining,
and abundant recreational options.
So, whether you plan to give your nephew and his fiancée a special
honeymoon, reward your mentor with a retirement golf weekend, or
treat your closest friends to a spa treatment, look no further than your
laptop for the ideal, and very special, personal gift.
For ideas, or to purchase gift cards, just visit our website at www.kslresorts.com,
choose your favorite resort, and select “gift cards” from the menu.
The Zen of Spa
If you’ve ever rushed to a day-spa appointment at home or fought for
a parking space once you arrive, then you’ll appreciate the holistic
approach our spas offer. Rather than “just” a massage, we encourage
guests to surround their session with soul- and mind-clearing time,
such as arriving early to shower and warm in our solarium, steam
room, sauna, or Jacuzzi beforehand; then absorb the ambient calm of
candles, scents and crystal lighting during treatment; and finally relax
into a body wrap, a facial, or a nourishing, fresh lunch. Surrendering
time to the process of unwinding in this way is the key to achieving
a deeply felt ease – exactly what the body and mind require to
counteract the effects of daily stress.
If you’d like to add a healthy spin or a rejuvenating spa break to your
domestic travels, we hope to see you enjoying our spa and fitness
facilities soon.

Mountain Man
As a boy, Ralph Green never saw himself
training for competition in Vail. Raised is New
York’s tough Bedford-Stuyvesant area, football
was Ralph’s ticket to a future. At just 15, he was
captain of his high school football team when, in
a random act of violence, he became a shooting
victim in an attack that cost him a leg and nearly
cost his life.
Today, Ralph is a champion skier, competing on
the U.S. Paralympics team, racing downhill at
90 miles an hour with a smile on his face. An
inspiring leader of others and a subject of media
attention, Ralph lives and trains in Vail, where he
spends a lot of time speaking about what he has
gained rather than what he has lost.
Ralph is just one of the local personalities who
give a warm and vibrant sense of community
to Vail village. Learn more about him at www.
ralphgreen.net, or better yet, come to Colorado
and meet the locals for yourself.

by stewed fennel, marble potatoes, tomatoes and olives – altogether
remarkably satisfying to the hungry palette.
Salmon, scallops, sea bass, free-range chicken, moscovy duck, osso buco,
and angus beef cuts are also featured entrees, accented by roasted squash,
chestnuts, braised chard, haricots verts, and other sides, paired to accent
each entrée and available separately as well.
Look around and you’ll also note
1500 Ocean’s popular bar area,
and creative Butler’s Pantry, a working area that showcases the restaurant’s
high-quality ingredients, accommodates nearby dining, and creates a
distinctive venue for tastings and special events.
We hope to welcome you to 1500 Ocean soon to discover its delights for yourself.
Your Turn as Chef
Strawberries with Aged Balsamic Syrup
At La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, our chef celebrates late spring by taking advantage of the prized local strawberries in a
dessert that has become a favorite of our guests. The ingredients create an unusual round of flavor sensations that draw attention to the berries’
luscious qualities, yet doesn’t overpower them. (For ease, we suggest you purchase the gelato and shortbread cookies ahead of time.)
The Plate
4 oz. sliced fresh strawberries
2 oz. strawberry balsamic syrup
1 ea. almond shortbread cookie
3 oz. Tahitian vanilla bean gelato
Pinch cracked black pepper
1 mint sprig
Place the sliced strawberries in a mixing bowl. Add
the balsamic syrup and the pepper. Toss. Place in
the center of a serving bowl. Scoop the gelato on
the strawberries. Garnish with cookie and mint.
Strawberry Balsamic Syrup
1 lb. fresh or frozen strawberries
4 cups water

The wine list is quite an
achievement, managing to offer
something for all tastes and
occasions without overwhelming.
Choices range from local coastal
wines, Australian shiraz, and
French champagne by the glass,
to friendly zinfindels, fragrant
cabernets and rarified reserve
collections by the bottle.

Honestly, we could probably serve microwave corn dogs in that setting and
have a hit on our hands. But what a waste that would be of our chef and
kitchen staff, who bring artistry and invention to a new level with dishes
such as the appetizer gnudi – Asian water buffalo ricotta gnudi, to be
exact – which Bon Appetit magazine called its “dish of the year.” Essentially
dumplings, they are reminiscent of ravioli without the pasta carrier, a
lighter-than-air morsel paired with a brilliant sauce.

“My place.” That’s the feeling one gets at 1500 Ocean, where warm
lighting and beautiful wood accents artfully invite guests to sample an
inspired menu facing the Pacific Sunset at the Hotel del Coronado.
Large enough to support a superb kitchen, intimate enough for a
romantic evening, and warm enough to welcome a gathering of
friends, 1500 Ocean has added an outdoor terrace for yet another
atmosphere – alfresco dining overlooking the lawn, the Pacific,
and the horizon.
