new month - SCMA Robina and Merrimac
The Southern Cross Connection The Newsletter of the Southern Cross Martial Arts Centre & Affiliates October 2011 Edition WELCOME Sorry about the return to late newsletters. The move, the Grand Opening and me being away again kind of made us a little late. Again. It‟s also a bit smaller than usual. The move and the new Dojo is complete – well, sort of……………. We‟re in the new Dojo, classes are running and the Grand Opening has been completed (see pics on Facebook). The sort relates to us being complete – remember a couple of months ago we wrote about the principle of Kaizen (continuous improvement)? Over the next few weeks and months we‟re sure things will change a bit as we get settled in and work things out. All in all though, we‟re very happy with the new Dojo. Shihan Hannah finalised the old Dojo about 5 minutes before handover. No pressure PROGRESSION MEMORABLE QUOTES “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who had practiced one kick 10,000 times.” Bruce Lee “What we hope ever to do with ease, we must learn first to do with diligence..” Samuel Johnson Why is it that when people play one or two games of recreational squash a week they never expect to play in the Olympics, but when they take the same approach to martial arts, they expect to make it to “Diligence is the mother of good luck. ” black belt? WORKING BEE’S We‟d like to thank everyone who gave up their weekends to help us to prepare the new Dojo and clean up the old one. We could never have got across the line without your help. Some people were at all of the working bee‟s, which was a big contribution. Others weren‟t at every one, but they certainly made massive contributions. Others were able to drop in here and there. Believe me when I say, every single minute of assistance was hugely appreciated. Benjamin Franklin “Diligence is not found in the short, sporadic sprints but in the careful, consistent marathon.” Dr. Robyn Silverman “Patience and Diligence, remove For those who were unable to make it, that‟s also fine. They were completely voluntary and we know how like faith, full people‟s lives are, particularly those with young families. Please stop apologising mountains. ” William Penn The amount of assistance we did receive saved us literally thousands of $‟s, which in turn helps us to keep our costs down, and therefore our fees down as much as possible. Once again, we feel vindicated “Dignity does not float down from heaven it that our vision of a community based school is working. Thank you. cannot be purchased nor manufactured. It is a reward reserved for those The old Dojo in Millennium Circuit is now gone. When Shihan Hannah handed it back to the landlord it who labour with diligence.” was an empty, freshly painted, very clean factory warehouse. It was, in short, far better than when we Bill Hybels OLD DOJO leased it 3 years ago. We had mixed feelings about the handover as the Millennium Circuit Dojo was the first Queensland Dojo that was truly ours (i.e. no business partners). “The expectations of life depend upon diligence; the In years to come, most of you will be able to say “remember back when we trained in Millennium Circuit mechanic that would perfect his work must first and……………..”. Old school GRAND OPENING sharpen his tools.” Confucius The Grand Opening exceeded all expectations. I cooked over 12kg of sausages and 2kg of onions! I © Southern Cross Martial Arts Centre 2011. The Jumping Castle was very popular despite my initial reservations given the fact that the original supervisor booked „pulled a sickie‟ at the last moment. I‟m not sure who was less impressed, me or his boss! We took a lot of pictures on the day, and we‟ve uploaded the best of these pics to Facebook. REFERRAL REWARDS PROGRAM As you know, we believe martial arts training is more than just kicking, punching and self defence; we believe it‟s about developing stronger bodies, sharper minds and community spirit. We pride ourselves in being a Black Belt School, where students of all ages train and work to become the best they can be, not just in our school, but in life. It is our goal to share this philosophy with as many members of our community as possible, which is why I want to let you know about our Referral Rewards Program. If you know someone who would benefit from our school, we would like the opportunity to have them as members. If they sign up, you‟ll receive a month‟s free training so we can show our appreciation. As we mentioned last newsletter, the winter sports seasons are now drawing to a close and many people currently doing the winter activities such as football (any code really) might be looking to move on to another activity. If you know anyone who might be interested in taking up martial arts, please take a couple of Guest Passes from reception, put your name on them and give them to your friends. These guest passes make sure you get credit for your referrals so you don‟t miss out on your reward. Remember, the referral rewards program rewards members who refer new members to the Centre by giving them free training. Obviously the referred person needs to sign up as a member to receive the free training. The basic idea is refer one new member, just by telling others about us, and if they join up you‟ll get one month of your current fees for free. Two members, two months and so on. If five people enroll thanks to you, then you‟ll receive a year‟s free fees! Yep, that‟s 12 months after your fifth referral, PLUS the 4 months already received. We think that‟s pretty good. 1 person = 1 month. So, 2 people is 2 months, 3 people is 3 months, 4 people is 4 months and 5 people is the tipping point. Get 5 people to enroll and we‟ll give you a year‟s free fees! And remember, that‟s on top of the four free months already received! So if 5 people enroll because of you, you will receive a total of 16 months for free. See Brooke, Cara or Hannah for details. KAICHŌ’S RANT There‟s a lot more to a good Dojo than flash facilities like we have here. The sad fact is that many places with great facilities, Dojo‟s that look great and have full classes, are at best little more that gyms, and at worst little more than breeding grounds for sociopaths. They have poor quality instructors, poor quality curriculums and generally produce lots and lots of poor quality black belts. Quite often they admire and aspire to be either like the Cobra Kai guys out of the original Karate Kid movies – “Strike Fast, Strike Hard, No Mercy SIR!” – or act more like undisciplined daycare centres that „progress‟ their students automatically every month. These are referred to as McDojo‟s. Many of our competitors who drive past us on the M1 probably think we are a McDojo. They‟ll never now the truth until they leave their comfort zones and bubbles of mediocrity, and come and train with you guys. One of the reasons I decided to leave the previous martial arts organisation I was a member of, an organisation I had been with for 25 years, was that many of the senior members, those at the proverbial top, had become corrupted by their perceptions of „power‟ © Southern Cross Martial Arts Centre 2011. All rights reserved. P a g e |2 and had come to believe that their students existed to „serve‟ them. Some had corrupted the Samurai philosophies of Japan (did you know Samurai means, “one who serves”?) to validate themselves and the way they behaved. Senior instructors who no longer train, and in some cases never run a school, were espousing grand theories of combative excellence and exercise methodology; not to mention how to run a school! And they were basing their sole source of knowledge and expertise on elevated rank, the colour of their gi, and the stripes on their belt. Whilst respect for senior rans is important, it must be a two way street. Respect must be given, not demanded. Senior ranks actually have more responsibilities than junior ranks as they must set an example, both in and out of the Dojo. The following story is from an online “friend” of mine and respected martial arts author from Hawaii, Charles Goodin: Whilst on the theme of Character, here‟s another gem from Goodin Sensei: It is just as important to work on character as it is to work on technique. In the dojo, we sweat from our hard training. In daily life, we also have many experiences that test our character. What makes a Karate expert (or an expert of any martial art) great, is not just that he has excellent technique (and applications), but that his character is just as excellent, if not even better. Sadly, some people use their advanced level in a martial art as an excuse to indulge vices. For some people, martial arts training magnifies their egos, anger, short tempers, jealousies, and vices in general... and their high rank allows them to get away with it. But this is not just a martial arts thing. Power corrupts many people in many walks of life. But at the same time, martial arts training also brings out the best in many people. Martial arts training can magnify the good in a student, and give him the strength to help others in difficult circumstances. We tend to hear only of the bad cases, but I suspect that there are ten good examples for every bad one. For every step forward you take on technique, you also have to take a step forward on character. The progress has to be equal, throughout your Karate life. This is an easy thing to say but a difficult thing to do. Technique alone is much, much easier. But technique alone can create people who could abuse their knowledge, skill, and position. So what should you do when you meet bad examples? Learn from them how not to be. That is also useful and can help you to avoid pitfalls. Technique and character must be two side of the same coin. And may I add that you do not develop character by simply yelling about it in the dojo. Just as the techniques of a kata are applied in self defence situations, the lessons of character that we learn in the dojo are applied in daily life. And, as my instructor Kyoshi Billy Manne always said, “You‟re only as good as your last session” Regardless of your rank. KIDZ ZONE LIL’DRAGONS Well what a huge couple of months it has been for us here at SCMAC, apart from the obvious with our big move; we have finalised our relocation without any interruptions and the handover of the old premises, had our soft opening with a belt graduation on the 17th September, then we had our grand opening and open day on the 1st October and prior to that had our Lil‟ Dragons belt graduation on the 3rd September. I think I can finally sigh with relief. We would like to thank everyone for your patience and continued support with everything going on around the old/new centres. © Southern Cross Martial Arts Centre 2011. All rights reserved. P a g e |3 Speaking of our class belt graduation I would like to congratulate Hallie, Bailey & Kael for receiving their orange wraps, and Jess for receiving her yellow wrap in early September. All four of you did an outstanding job and showed your parents, family and friends what good little karate ka (students of Karate) you all are. Our class seems to be steadily growing and I can see some huge differences in the students whom have been here for a little while compared to our new comers, and there should be an obvious difference. Children of this age are learning to do things such as listen, focus- including having a longer attention span, follow directions, share with others and even interact with others just to name a few. So please remember that our Lil‟ Dragons program is designed as a pre martial arts program to help sculpt their little minds and bodies ready for their next big challenges in life like school or even the Junior Dragons karate program, and as with artwork, sculpting does take a little time to undertake. To help with our sculpting process and due to the age bracket of the children we are teaching we keep these classes short in duration being half an hour, we do lots of quick little drills & activities and reiterate & repeat skills to ensure that the student can in due course recall the skill by themself. SCMAC would like to welcome our newest members of the Lil‟ Dragons program Xander and Sophie if you do not know these new Lil‟ Dragons then please make them feel welcome. In the meantime let‟s have fun! Shihan Hannah JUNIOR DRAGONS It‟s been a huge couple of months it has been for us here at SCMAC, apart from the obvious with our big move; we have finalised our relocation without any interruptions and the handover of the old premises, had our soft opening with a belt graduation on the 17th September, then we had our grand opening and open day on the 1st October and prior to that had our Lil‟ Dragons belt graduation on the 3rd September. I think I can finally sigh with relief. We would like to thank everyone for your patience and continued support with everything going on around the old/new centres. The 17th of September was an eventful day for SCMAC members as the new Honbu (Head School) was unveiled at our soft opening and the first ever belt graduation. We had 13 members of this class graduating to their next belt rank, with 3 of those receiving their honour bars from the belt grading week held the preceding week. So a huge congratulation‟s to the guys and girls from the Junior Dragons class for reaching your next stepping stone in the journey to becoming a black stripe. Not to forget we had one young lady graduate from the Junior Dragons into the Red Dragons program as she has now come of age so big congratulations to Ella for reaching this milestone and keep up the good work, now in lies bigger challenges for you and I have no hesitation that you will strive to succeed. The belt graduation day also saw the presentation of our Term 3 Most Outstanding Student trophy. This was awarded to Caleb Kennedy; Caleb was awarded the most amount of Student of the Day‟s during term 3. Congratulations to Caleb for your continual outstanding efforts and this is your 2nd trophy for the year what an effort!!!!!!! Now that the school holidays are over we are back into our 8 week curriculum which means one skill stripe per week, we kick off with our focus skill before moving onto our team work skill. Again once a student has all 8 skill stripes then that student is eligible to do their belt graduation providing they have their intent to promote form completed and grading fee paid, our next graduation day is the 15th October. SCMAC would like to welcome our newest members of the Junior Dragons program Jasmine, Kaleb, Jack, Sienna and Chloe if you do not know these guys and gals then please make them feel welcome. In the meantime let‟s have some fun! Shihan Hannah © Southern Cross Martial Arts Centre 2011. All rights reserved. P a g e |4 RED DRAGONS Well what a huge couple of months it has been for us here at SCMAC, apart from the obvious with our big move; we have finalised our relocation without any interruptions and the handover of the old premises, had our soft opening with a belt graduation on the 17th September, then we had our grand opening and open day on the 1st October and prior to that had our Lil‟ Dragons belt graduation on the 3rd September. I think I can finally sigh with relief. We would like to thank everyone for your patience and continued support with everything going on around the old/new centres. The changing of our new belt grading system has well and truly commenced with the introduction of the 8 skills stripes and our belt graduation days. So far Kaichō Damien, Renshi John and I are happy with the way that the new system is working. As previously mentioned this is to streamline the individual‟s progression towards their next belt rank, and with the skill stripes being placed on the student‟s belt or in Renshi John case a skills book, makes it easier at a glance to establish who is where in their progression towards their next belt rank. With that being said we had our first belt graduation taking place on the 17th September and we had 4 Red Dragons from the Helensvale dojo receive their next belt ranking. So a huge congratulations to all whom where promoted on the day, keep working hard and aiming towards your Junior Black Belts. The return to school enabled me to present the winner of the Red Dragons Term 3 Most Outstanding Student trophy, as the person being awarded was off on a break. Congratulation to Thomas Collins, I must say this was a great surprise for Thomas and a welldeserved award keep up the good work! SCMAC would like to welcome our newest members of the Red Dragons program Sean, Mason and Olivia if you do not already know these guys and gal then please make them feel welcome. And welcome Ella into the Red Dragons program. Ella graduated into the Red Dragons from the Junior Dragons program at our last belt graduation day. Shihan Hannah KIDZ THAI BOXING Wow! What a busy month it‟s been around SCMA! Well done once again for your efforts over the last month. A big congratulations for those of you who were able to do their first armband grading at the open day with Ajarn Geordie and Kru Jess and a big thank you to Shannah Jewson who trained with us on the day! Shannah did a great job and will grade for her amrband next time round Congratulations to the following Kidz Thai Boxing students for receiving their armbands off Ajarn Geordie: - Cody Penman - Zade Shirley - Joshua Jewson - Kaden Lewis - Sophie Ingham Ajarn Geordie was pleased with the level of skill that was demonstrated at the Grading as was I. We‟re obviously doing something right We still have lots to work on but if it was easy, you would all start at a black armband. The date for the in-class armband grading will be announced in class. So if you missed out at the Grand Opening grading, you may be eligible to grade at the in class grading! Some things will be changing around again – like the way we line up for example. We used to “circle up” at the start of each class whereas now, we line up in order of rank. The whole idea behind “circling up” was there was no rank to our class and we were all equal. Now that some of us have armbands, we can now line up in order of rank. I would also like to welcome our newest member to our Kidz Thai Boxing class; welcome Christopher. Well done to Braiden Bell for being awarded the trophy for the Term 3 Most KTB Improved Student. Your efforts have been outstanding! © Southern Cross Martial Arts Centre 2011. All rights reserved. P a g e |5 Well, let‟s get stuck in to it and work towards our next armband grading! Let‟s keep up the good work! Kru James POWERFUL WORDS October 2011: Diligence This month we will focus on the powerful word; “diligence.” Diligence is when we work carefully, consistently, and with great effort until a task is done. When we work with diligence, it‟s much more likely that the task will be done to the best of our abilities. Children who work hard often don‟t attribute success to being “smart” but rather, persistent and diligent. When we tell children that effort is the key to their success, they are much less likely to give up and much more likely to buckle down and continue to work hard. It makes sense then, that studies show that praise for diligence is much more productive and helpful for a child than praise for results or talents. Children sometimes forget that there is a link between effort and ability. In particular, some children attribute success to how innately “good” or “bad” they are in a particular area. This can be detrimental such that they fail to realise that with additional effort and diligence, they can do better. Instead, they simply give up or settle for substandard results that could indeed be improved if they tried. So when it comes to diligence, we are dealing with a question of a “fixed mind-set” vs a “growth mind-set.” A “fixed mind-set” is when people believe that they are only as good as they are today. They think that if they do poorly the subject or skill just might not be “their thing.” A growth mind-set acknowledges that with effort and persistence, a person can change the results. Helping children and teens understand that effort and ability are positively linked can change mind-set...and results. Help your children realise the link between effort and results by sharing your successes and how your hard work and diligence paid off. What helped you focus? What kept you going? How did you keep a growth mind-set even during the tough times? And of course, help them to recognise how their own hard work has helped them reach their goals as well. Week 1: Diligence defined: What does it mean to work carefully & with great effort? Week 2: Paying attention to detail: What gets in the way? What helps me focus? Week 3: PACE: Prepare, Act, Continue/ Commit, Evaluate-- What is my mind-set? Week 4: Rewards & Consequences: What are the results of my actions? As you would all no doubt be aware, I am away from class again whilst on a teaching trip to the lovely (insert sarcasm font) Redcliff. I leave you in the very capable hands of Shihan Hannah for the month, with a view to her preparing everyone for grading at the end of the year. We recently had our Grand Opening for the Dojo, which was quite a success by any standard. The only class we didn‟t do a demo for on the day was the senior karate class and there was a reason for this. Frankly, we aren‟t looking for any more students in this class at this stage. I would rather that everyone who is a member trained more often rather than over fill this class. Obviously the Dojo is a business so we need to cover our costs, but we are first and foremost a martial arts school with a heavy emphasis on quality. Ranks I am well aware that some of you are currently sitting on a rank lower than your actual ability and skill level; and as a result we will do an in-class adjustment this month with a view to levelling things out at the grading in December. My main concern at this point is to make sure you can all meet the fitness requirements for your rank. Remember, each rank has fitness requirements, technical requirements (including strikes, throws, and grappling techniques), kata requirements, self-defence requirements and sparring requirements. You need to have the appropriate skill in all of these areas to grade. Some of you are playing it „safe‟ and primarily working on your strengths, but I would advise that you spend more time on your weaknesses – they are, after all, what is most likely to let you down. I know that some of you are lazy in your fitness requirements and need to do some extra work at home on pushups and situps. It‟s not all about kicking people in the head, sparring and other „fun‟ stuff. The syllabus is about continuous improvement. Sparring The sparring session to break in the new Dojo was a good session and gave me ample opportunity to evaluate where everyone is sitting in terms of skill and attitude. There were some regrettable lapses in control that I would not like to see repeated though. Making your partner bleed is usually a sign of laziness (i.e. can‟t be bothered to control my techniques), sadism (i.e. I like to hurt people) or poor skill. Please make sure that you look after each other when sparring. Student Handbook The link below will enable you to download a copy of the senior GKK handbook with the entire current syllabus and so on included. The link will be active for the next month. Please don‟t send it or share it with people outside the Dojo. Kaicho Damien FITNESS KICKBOXING Well what a huge couple of months it has been for us here at SCMAC, apart from the obvious with our big move; we have finalised our relocation without any interruptions and the handover of the old premises, had our soft opening with a belt graduation on the 17th September, then we had our grand opening and open day on the 1st October and prior to that had our Lil‟ Dragons belt graduation on the 3rd September. I think I can finally sigh with relief. We would like to thank everyone for your patients and continued support with everything going on around the old/new centres. Muay Thai has loads of traditions and the Wai Kru is just one of them, pronounced “Why Crew”. As we are now affiliated with Black Dragon Kai Combat Systems we will be introducing the beginners Wai Kru into the adult fitness kickboxing class. The Wai Kru is a sign of respect to the art of Muay Thai both to past and present practitioners, and within the confines of our training centre at SCMAC or our affiliates and it is to pay respect to your family, your trainer and your gym/fellow students. © Southern Cross Martial Arts Centre 2011. All rights reserved. P a g e |7 To perform the Wai Kru we go into a kneeling position with our knees apart, place our hands together on our chest as if we were going to say a prayer, then place our left hand palm down on the ground followed by your right, lean forward and bow. We then return our right hand to our chest followed by our left hand so that the palms are together again like praying and bring them up to our face so that our thumbs touch our forehead whilst we are looking up to the sky. This is repeated a further 2 times to represent who we are respecting family, trainer and gym. So for some further Muay Thai etiquette to show respect to the instructor and other students at all times here are some handy tips. To “Wai” (or perform a Thai bow) at these times: At the beginning of class with the beginners Wai Kru (3 Bows). When entering/leaving the matted area. If late for class wait for the instructor to wai (Bow) you into class. When receiving individual training advice during any training exercise. Both before and after training technique and/or sparring with others. Before and after training on the Thai kick pads Wai to the instructor and/or individuals holding the training pads. When entering/leaving a sparring space such as a ring or ring like area. At the end of class with the beginners Wai Kru (3 Bows). No profanity, sarcasm, critical, or otherwise abusive language or behaviour is acceptable Hopefully these handy tips will help you to becoming more rounded the art of Muay Thai, and allow you to have a better understanding of the respect that this arts has. SCMAC would like to welcome our new members of the Fitness Kickboxing program Vanessa and Peter; and Brothers Jamie and Jesses who are students of the MMA program, if you do not already know these new guys then please make them feel welcome. In the meantime train hard and train safe! Kru Hannah BJJ Paolo and SCMAC would like to welcome our new members of the BJJ program Brothers Jamie and Jesses who are students of the MMA program, if you do not already know these new guys then please make them feel welcome. SCMAC would also like to welcome our new members of the MMA program which includes the Fitness Kickboxing and BJJ programs Brothers Jamie and Jesse, if you do not already know these new guys then please make them feel welcome. CAGE FITNESS Another month gone... really? Ah well, time flies when you‟re having fun! And, winter is finally behind us! I don‟t know about you guys and girls, but I really dislike the cold! Summer is fast approaching which means that it‟s going to get really, really...really hot when we‟re on the floor and more sweat is going to be produced as a result (If you‟re actually putting in the effort that is ). As most of you are aware, our new mats have proven to be rather....difficult to grip to! We are still breaking in the new mats so just try not to face plant the floor when we‟re training...again...it tends to hurt. But seriously, just be careful As you should now be aware we are running 6:30am sessions Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Numbers for these classes are not very high at this stage as we expected but we hope that changes in the very near future. Believe me when I say I don‟t like early morning starts. Early morning starts and I don‟t get along very well at all, but there are some very good benefits to early morning sessions. Exercising in the early hours of the day can do many things for your body. It can „jump start‟ your body‟s metabolism and keep you energized throughout your entire day. Early morning exercise also has a tendency to regulate your body‟s appetite, meaning that you can eat smaller portions (and healthier foods) as your body releases endorphins © Southern Cross Martial Arts Centre 2011. All rights reserved. P a g e |8 which help to diminish your appetite and are your body‟s natural feel good chemicals. So the end result is; training is good. Even the early mornings! NEWS & VIEWS PROMOTIONS The „hybrid‟ grading/graduation went pretty well considering and was definitely the largest we‟ll run in the near future. When we saw that all of the seating was gone we were sad, but also happy Pictures of the graduations can be found, once again, on Facebook. We missed a couple of months due to the move and a lack of birthdays, but this month we‟re back for the first time at the new dojo!So far all of the feedback from kids and parents alike has been great. The basic plan is to run a single birthday party for all of our junior members whose birthday falls in that month, and they can bring a couple of friends along too. It‟s a bit shorter than our paid parties, and a lot less guests too. We don‟t do the cake or Pinata, but the kids still get to have a lot of fun with their friends. The dates for the next few months are: October 22nd November 19th December 10th © Southern Cross Martial Arts Centre 2011. All rights reserved. P a g e |9 KIDZ KAMP Improved martial arts skills! Our second annual Kidz Kamp will be held on the first week of the Christmas/New Year holidays, the 12th to 16th December. The timing is aimed to give parents an extra week before Christmas to get all of those little jobs out of the way before being swamped by the kids. EARLY BIRD SPECIAL. SAVE $110 Last year all of the participants also graded which was an added bonus! So aside from fun and games, there‟s plenty of training. The kids are obviously supervised and structured activities are provided for the entire time. Book for the entire week or one day at a time. Open to all SCMA members aged 5 to 12 years – Junior Dragons, Red Dragons and Kidz Thai Boxing. When: 9AM to 3PM from the 12th to the 16th of December Where: At the Dojo of course! The techniques emphasise no striking to better „fit‟ the „Zero Tolerance‟ policies of most schools today. We also cover safe touching and good secrets and bad secrets to provide broader coverage of the risks kids face in the real world. The cost for members is $22 (inc GST) and $110 (inc GST) for non members.. The next course is on Monday the 12th of December. Bookings are essential as these do book out fast.
