An organisation that is built on goodwill, dedication and commitment to the Beauty Therapy profession through education and dialogue. An organisation that pays tribute to all Board Members past and present, schools, tutors through Education, Beauty Centres, CIDESCO Sections and graduates worldwide. An organisation that recognised the need for this universal identity in Beauty Therapy and with forethought helped weave the tapestr y of this UNIQUE organisation that unites nations in the same cause. CIDESCO has influenced national and international education through leading by example and is today a highly reputed qualification which is recognized globally and where CIDESCO Diploma graduates are in great demand. If one looks behind a CIDESCO Diploma and recognizes the effort and sheer dedication that it takes to achieve this qualification, it would open a world of striving for per fection by voluntar y members of the same profession who are creating a sound framework of education – its value is then enhanced. I attended my first CIDESCO Congress in 1976 – Edith Lauda was President – I distinctly remember a stage filled with representatives from all over the world and I was in awe of what they represented. It is amazing that the same dedication to CIDESCO is unwavering and it continues to be managed by voluntar y groups who believe in its value, contributing time and energy to ensuring CIDESCO maintains its place in the global arena. On behalf of the International Board we pay tribute to our predecessors‚ who paved the way, nationally and internationally pioneering the most reputable qualification in the world of Beauty Therapy, CIDESCO. One of these most remarkable pioneers is Joan Thornycroft who I have been privileged to have known since the early 1970’s. She is energy, she is vital – she is dedicated and she has just tur ned 90 maintaining a keen sense of humour and remarkable foresight. Joan you are an “icon“ and there are so many reading this CIDESCO LINK who have been influenced and guided by your unlimited and unselfish devotion and who are a credit to you. Joan has examined all over the globe and can tell a stor y or t wo which I continue to dine out on – the “remember when” syndrome – I love her stories and I love and admire Joan – congratulations Joan we SALUTE YOU! Please join us in ATHENS from 19th – 22nd October this year to celebrate the 60 years of dedication and commitment to enhancing the Beauty Therapy Profession giving practitioners a CIDESCO Diploma they can be proud of! 1 CIDESCO Link - March/April 2006 Happy Birthday Joan Thornycroft 90 years young in March! A Tribute from Kenneth Morris, Honorar y Member, CIDESCO. March 3rd 1916 was the date on which Georgio Bassani, Italian w riter and Hans Eysenck, psychologist were bor n. Never heard of either them you may say? March 3rd 1916 was also the day on which Joan Thornycroft (not her maiden name) was also born and the chances are that hundreds if not thousands of you reading this edition of the Link will know who she is! This year, Joan will be celebrating her 90 th birthday and I join in the many who will be offering her our heartiest congratulations. Joan must be one of the most remarkable people in the Beauty Industr y, not just in the UK, but across the globe. Joan is well known and respected for her teaching, examining, guiding and experience. I have had the privilege of knowing her for 30 years; we have worked together on BABTAC Council, the board of CIDESCO, and the CIDESCO Education Committee. Joan Thor nycroft has given of herself unstintedly to raise and maintain the standards of beauty therapists around the world and there are many who are grateful for having known her. The most remarkable thing about Joan Thornycroft is that she must surely be the longest serving person in the histor y of the beauty industr y for I know of no- one else whose services have been called upon when she is in her 90 th year! Whenever her name is mentioned, there is only the greatest admiration for her and the word “retirement” is unknown in her vocabular y. I wish Joan the best of health to continue what she enjoys most and I hope that I shall be invited to w rite a tribute to her on her 100 th birthday! Mrs. Hedy Dettwiler – past Board Mem CIDESCO Link - March/April 2006 ber A message from Joanna Lack What an amazing lady... I have known Joan for the past 40 years – firstly teaching for another well-known Beauty Therapy School, and then to r unning for many years her own beautiful school in Royal Tunbridge Wells in the heart of the Kent countr yside. Examining and lecturing worldwide with many firsts Japan, China and Malaysia. Always a staunch supporter of standards, especially regarding education, whether for a young student starting out in her career or the mature student retur ning to Beauty Therapy after gap years. Standards, knowledge and keeping up- to- date were considered imperative to Joan. There are many many students the world over who have her to thank for her guidance and advice to their successful careers in Beauty Therapy. Mrs Thor nycroft was Chairman of BABTAC before becoming a board member of CIDESCO and it was inevitable that she should become the CIDESCO member for education. Her period in office saw many innovations in her time on the Board, Joan held the fort. Along with her favourite subject of M L D Joan has until recently been Chairman and founder member of the Spa Association. Joan I salute you! JOAN THORNYCROFT is forever in my mind linked with CIDESCO. We first met in 1971 at the 25th World Congress in Br ussels, Belgium, then regularly back in London through Joan’s work supplying therapy equipment and training in the fast-growing professional beauty world. Our friendship was really cemented in 1974 when we were lone British delegates at the Israeli Congress and continually swapped notes on the lectures and social programme. It was my knowledge of Joan’s approach to teaching and abilities at communicating with students that made me appreciate how well she would do her job as the CIDESCO Board member in charge of Education. I was amazed at the amount of work she undertook and the dedication she gave to her role. She was always full of ideas on examination curricula and raising standards in education. She’s a good friend whose company I value personally and professionally. ACNT is proud to be a CIDESCO School and we look for ward to our continued association with you. Best regards, Danny Bielik General Manager, ACNT, Sydney, Australia CIDESCO Link - March/April 2006 Happy Birthday Celebrating CIDESCO’s 60th Anniversary Only a few people reading this will know the names of Georges Dumont and Jacques Poirsons, but they were the founders 60 years ago of an organisation that came to be known as CIDESCO. I feel sure that they could not have envisaged how their dreams would have been fulfilled. Much has been achieved during the last 60 years and there is still much more to do. However, with the knowledge of what has been achieved in the past and with the continued dedication of those involved with the organisation, there is no doubt that CIDESCO will continue to be looked respected and the students who graduate in the future with a CIDESCO Diploma will know that they have a qualification second-to-none. Kenneth Morris Honorar y Member It’s my pleasure to address my warmest congratulations to the Board of CIDESCO on the occasion of 60 years of CIDESCO. CIDESCO was founded on the 27th and 28th December 1946 in Br ussels (Belgium) during a Georges Dumont and Jacques Poirsons organised Congress, later indicated as CIDESCO’s first International Congress. So, how can we celebrate CIDESCO’s 60 th anniversar y better then at CIDESCO’s ‘Diamond Congress’ on the 19th to 22nd October in Athens (Greece), only 2 months before the official date!! Let’s also in the coming years be careful with our prestigious precious diamond CIDESCO. Keeping those costs under control is the job of your group insurance broker. Yet many companies don’t really know if they are receiving the best service and support from their broker. They continue to use the same person for years because there is a perceived idea that to keep changing my insurance broker is a hassle. The tr uth is, if your broker is not paying attention to your business, it is probably costing your company a substantial amount of money. Your broker should be a proactive partner that is communicating with you about the best options currently available for your company’s insurance needs. These 10 myths have kept customers tied to the same broker for years without any benefit to the client. Myth #1 You have to wait until renewal time to change brokers. Tr uth #1 If you are not satisfied with your broker, you have the right to replace them at any time. Most carriers will accept a change of broker letter effective the 1st of the month following the receipt of the letter. Myth #2 If you change brokers, you have to change plans or you need to complete all new paperwork. Tr uth #2 The only paper work necessar y to change brokers is a formal broker of record letter to the current carrier (we can supply one to you). There are no disr uptions in service. Plans don’t change and benefits adjustments are made at your convenience. Myth #3:Your company has no choice but to accept the high double digit increase. Tr uth #3 There are more choices than ever today for employers. Companies can explore plan designs, funding methods, contribution schedules and voluntar y options. Myth #4 You can only receive competitive rates if you are a large company. Tr uth #4 There is an advantage to having more employees because it enables the carriers to spread the risk on a larger group. However, the rate for all medical plans over 50 employees and ancillar y plans over 10 employees can be negotiated based on the demographics of the group. Even groups under 50 employees have options if you know where to look for them. 7 Myth #5 You can only obtain the best rates if you have a large broker negotiate on your behalf. Tr uth #5 All brokers have access to the same rates and have to be quoted the same rate on a particular plan design. Only a change of benefits can effect a change in the rate. The question really is :Does your broker look at all the available alter natives and provide you with a range of options to select from? Myth #6 You have to wait until renewal to change carriers. Tr uth #6 Many carriers will not allow plan design changes mid year. However that is negotiable based on your size and the prospect of them losing the case. In addition, for fully insured cases, you can change carriers with 30 days w ritten notice. Myth #7 Small companies have no choice of plan designs or benefits options. Tr uth #7 Carriers today are giving smaller companies many of the same choices that large market companies receive. R x card options, gated, un-gated plans, co-payments, coinsurance and a host of ancillar y line options are now available. Myth #8 Only very large companies can use alternative funding methods. Tr uth #8 ASO and minimum premium plans are available to companies as small as 50 employees. In addition the new HDHP (High Deductible Health Plans) offer an option worth exploring to cut costs on a fully insured basis. Myth #9 You should only hear from your broker at renewal time or if there is a problem. Tr uth #9 Your broker is responsible for a ver y large expense item. Your broker should be in regular contact with you to offer service support as well as his advice on new plan options that carriers make available. Myth #10 You need multiple brokers for different types of insurance products. Tr uth #10 Your group insurance broker should be your advisor and consultant on your other insurance issues. Even if they do not actually w rite the policy, since they know your business needs so well, they are in a great position to find you the best person for your needs. By Michael Kachidurian - mkachidurian@chathamcg.com CIDESCO Link - March/April 2006 Nutrition, Fitness and the As the emerging baby boomers enter the latter part of their lives in this centur y, there is a greater awareness of preventative health care in the western world. This has generated regular topics on nutrition, fitness and weight loss strategies proliferate. Improper dietar y intake affects not only the health of the skin and body weight but also affect the mental state Nutrition, Fitness and the Spa Spas are becoming a norm in modern society, the latest spa in the marketplace is called the “Medi-Spa” where physicians and nurses offer medical, health and cosmetic services within an environment that is no longer clinical, but more of a “spa” ambiance where “patients” feel more pampered instead of being “sick. However, many individuals visit their esthetician more regularly than the physician and this suggests that physical appearance is becoming more important to them than even visiting the dentist. To prevent or delay the aging of the skin and body, the holistic approach must be implemented. The primar y services in the spa are to help develop clear healthy skin, nails, hair and to promote rela xation. Proper nutrition enhanced with dietar y supplementation has finally been established as the underlying principle for a health body and mind. Nutrition, fitness and stress management are three main components of antiaging and should be incor porated in the spa because it fulfills the wellness ethic. Lifestyle Management Skills The destination spa is a resort where people may visit perhaps once or t wice a year, and at these resorts the holistic approach is usually offered. Here healthy lifestyle coaching such as nutrition and fitness are incor porated with esthetic treatments. The idea is that once the client retur ns home, she/ he will continue to lead the healthy lifestyle habits taught at the spa. However, that ideology is rarely sustained because on arrival at home, most people eventually revert to their regular lifestyles. Because many client visit day spas more frequently, it is the ideal place where this ideology can be taught, maintained or monitored The Esthetician and the Wellness Factor What exactly is “wellness”? It can be described as the active pursuit of healthy living on a daily basis. It is not just good physical health but also incor porates mental health. In the spa, we offer serenity, rela xation and wellness to beautify, unwind and rejuvenate over worked systems. While spa treatments are important to develop clear healthy skin, nails, hair and promote rela xation, results are only temporar y. As for body treatments, all the exfoliating, w rapping and moisturizing will not really detoxify and slim the body. Most of this is simply marketing and pampering but we can do much more for CIDESCO Link - March/April 2006 In the industry our clients! We can help extend the results of beauty treatments on a more permanent basis by offering lifestyle coaching, guiding and motivating our clients to lead a healthier lifestyle, particularly in the realm of nutrition, exercise and stress management. If we really want to make a difference in our client’s lives, we can do so because estheticians and their clients have special rapport built over time from regular visits. This industr y is poised to do a lot more than simple pampering with more education and skills, we can lear n and help to move our profession in another direction where we can make a real difference in society. But we must want to do this as a whole industr y The therapist should analyze the client’s skin and assess the basic nutritional needs for that skin condition. In body treatments, instead of just exfoliating and moisturizing the body, the therapist can guide and motivate the client to lose weight, gain strength, have more energy and lead a healthier lifestyle. Most people do not go to a nutritionist or dietician for advice. What they need is simple guidance to choosing and eating the correct foods and motivation to exercise regularly. Clients need this encouragement continuously because most of them are not committed to carr y out the actions outside their treatments for a healthier lifestyle and this often leave them overeating and stressed out. Most people obtain information about nutrition and fitness from articles, books and the Internet but the spa can provide these resources to the clients since they are already coming there for the health of the skin, nails, hair and body. People are no longer dependent on their physicians for managing their health and are seeking alter native health care practitioners that could include educated estheticians. The following information will hopefully help the therapist lear n how to implement nutrition and exercise into face and body treatments. Lifestyle Questionnaire The Daily Food Guide developed by scientists is designed to ensure that one can obtain adequate nutrient needs by eating sufficient servings in each food group on a daily basis. In the U.S.A. and other parts of the world, a FiveGroup Plan is used while in Canada a Four-Group Plan is the norm. Train yourself and your clients to always think of how many serving sizes they are eating and eventually this habit will become inter nalized over time and this 8 In the industry will hopefully help to control healthier daily dietar y intake as you become more aware of the quantity and quality of the foods bought and eaten. The following serving sizes for the different food groups are given: Practice remembering them daily until they become internalized. A Five-Group Plan (U.S.A and other countries) Milk Group (milk, cheese, yogurt): 2-3 servings are recommended (milk, cheese, yogurt): each may be: 1 cup of milk/yogurt, 2 oz. Processed cheese’ 1 ½ cheese. Meat and meat alternatives (chicken, fish, beans): 2-3 servings: each may be: 2-3 oz lean cooked meat; 1 egg; ½ cup legumes, 2tbs. Peanut butter Grains (6-11 servings): each may be: 1 slice bread: ½ cup cooked cereals, rice, pasta; 1 oz commercial cereals; ½ bun/ bagel; 2 large crackers Fr uit (includes juices): 2- 4 servings, each may be: 1 medium size fr uit, ½ grapefr uit, ¾ juice; ½ chopped/canned fr uit; ¼ dried fr uit. Vegetables: 3-5 servings, each: ½ cup cooked/ raw vegetables; ¾ vegetable juice; 1 cup leafy raw vegetables ½ cooked legumes. foods but do not recommend abstaining from them completely. Common Skin Conditions and Lifestyle Coaching The following is a recommendation for dr y w rinkled skin conditions commonly encountered in spas, nutritional guidance and some recommended lifestyle modifications that will lead to remarkable difference in the long term results of your facial treatments:. Skin conditions: Lifestyle Coaching: A helpful strategy to determine the basic nutritional needs of your clients, have them fill out a simple questionnaire with yes/no answers, just like dentists and other health practitioners do during the consultation. Ask questions such as “Do you eat fr uits and vegetables, and if you do, how many servings?”, “Do you drink milk or dair y products daily?”, “Do you eat brightly colored fr uits/veggies”? “Do you smoke?”, “Do you suffer from high stress regularly?” etc. Analysis of Daily Food Guide Plan By simply calculating if the client’s daily food intake is balanced with the recommended Daily Food Guide, one can determine several factors in improper dietar y intake. For example, insufficient servings in grains may indicate deficiency in fiber and Vitamin B complex (significant in these type of foods) while insufficient meat products may suggest iron deficiency. Conversely, excessive meat consumption means a high protein, high fat (saturated fat) diet; inadequate milk servings shows low calcium intake and of course, insufficient water intake will indicate dehydration. Insufficient water intake can also be revealed by a bright color and pungent odor of urine. Insufficient fr uit and vegetable intake indicate low fiber, vitamins and minerals, important criteria for a healthy clear complexion because brightly colored ones contain antioxidants and phytochemicals, substances found to have preventative measures against many diseases. For weight management treatments, it is also vital to check for the quality of each serving, that is, whether the meat or milk is high, medium or low fat content. For your ethnic clients, make suggestions for healthier versions of their favorite 9 Nutrition: Dry skin, lines, wrinkles - Avoid soap, use proper skin care - Avoid direct sun, sauna - Modify lifestyle behaviors e.g. smoking - Avoid hot water, use cool water to wash - Tr y not to worr y, avoid stressful events - Avoid excessive facial expression - Practice good posture (lift up neck, shoulders) - Avoid sleeping on one side fo face - Avoid using hot water on face, hot baths - Lear n to rela x more - Avoid smoking - Avoid extreme temperatures -Eat fish (Omega 3) 2/3x wk - Drink < 8 gl. water daily - Green/ black tea vs. coffee (polyphenols) - More fresh fr uits (antioxidants, fiber) - Brightly colored fr uits/vegies (phytochemicals) - Soy foods (phytoestrogens) - Reduce alcohol, instead 2 g/d red wine only - Dietar y supplements: 30+y rs: > calcium, multivitamins, Omega 3 fatty acids - Exercise: > active physical activity, strength training to prevent osteoporosis, Pilates and Yoga to improve posture, flexibility CIDESCO Link - March/April 2006 In the industry Body Treatments for slimming or toning Lifestyle management skills for body care are much tougher to carr y out because it is difficult to see immediate results. Surely, one cannot achieve “wellness” when one is over weight or under weight. Our work can be so more realistic and meaningful if we can help guide our clients to achieve a healthy body weight. The BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measurement that is used by most health professionals to determine a healthy body weight and be worked by this formula: BMI = Weight (kg) divided by Height (m)2 or Weight (lbs) divided by Height (inches) x 705 A BMI of less than 20 indicate unhealthy bodyweight with iron deficiency and possibility of eating disorders. A BMI of 20 to 25 is low risk while a BMI of more than 27 is indicative of increased risk of coronar y heart diseases, hypertension and diabetes. Other variables such as poor lifestyle habits (smoking, drinking) increase health risks independently of BMI. eating several small meals throughout the day instead of three meals and drink more water for digestion, absor ption and elimination. The endomor ph should concentrate on aerobic fitness combined with strength training. Tr ue antiaging therapy includes guiding the client to a healthier lifestyle patterns by implementing both nutrition and exercise guidelines within the body treatments they are already per forming. Proper nutrition is ver y important to help reduce cellulite conditions that are mainly caused by improper choice of foods and poor elimination of toxins from the body. Recommend drinking more water and fiber-rich foods for more effective digestion, absor ption and elimination. Nutritional guidance can be built into a series of body treatments and started at the onset of the program. A nutritional and wellness component can be introduced in the spa with a small investment in a fr uit blender for fresh fr uit drinks.O ffer green tea with its high flavonoid qualities during treatments to enhance the wellness program. Spa Ambiance Regular exercise gives you high energy, feel lighter on your feet and you feel more youthful. It is one of the main pillars of antiaging, the main benefits being to improve lymphatic flow, cellular metabolism, energy levels, bur n calories, reduce stress and gives a sense of wellness. The environment and décor should reflect the healthy function of the spa. The therapists should have clear healthy skin with a trim, toned body, moving effortlessly to indicate youthful energy thus serving as a motivating factor to clients. Marketing of dietar y supplements in the spas can significantly increase income in the spas. The staff should be educated about any dietar y supplements carried in the spa which should be attractively displayed with sufficient literature to educate the clients of their benefits just like the health food stores. The health spa can provide these nutritional pamphlets to clients who are already coming there for their skin and body health. Nutrition is a 40-billion dollar market and the opportunity exists for the spas to help redirect some of their clients’ spending towards them instead since they are already buying supplements without any professional guidance. Mind and Body Fitness Conclusion Both yoga and Pilates have been found to be ver y effective in maintaining muscle tone, improve flexibility and simultaneously improve mental health. The deep breathing techniques of yoga teaches the client how to manage high stress thus improving mental wellness. Pilates helps to strengthen the core muscles thus improving posture and flexibility. Several day spas have already began to incor porate Pilates and yoga into their programs as part of their “spa menus” and yoga emphasize deep breathing techniques and are definite assets to both improving body shape and mental well-being. Yoga and Pilates exercises can be incor porated into massage treatments to teach the client how to manage stress, improve posture and increase flexibility. This is a tr ue antiaging treatment. The “fluff” is good but we can do much more. Nutrition, exercise and stress management are essential components in promoting wellness in the spa. Skin and body therapists can become more credible if they tried to lead a healthier lifestyle. If you want to take this profession in another direction – as a health care profession, don’t wait, do so now! Fitness and weight loss program Offering weight loss and cellulite programs can bring in a completely new group of clientele in your spa. If you are already per forming body treatments such as body w raps or electrical equipment, you can incor porate body treatments for weight reduction, toning and cellulite into your treatment plan.. Benefits of Exercise Body treatments with nutrition and fitness By Pat Lam. B.Sc. Hons. Degree, Vice-Principal of Lam School of Advanced Esthetics, Vice-President of Skin Care Consultants, Toronto Canada, CIDESCO International Examiner and CIDESCO Gold Medal Winner, Board Certified AntiAging Practitioner by the American Academy of AntiAging Medicine, Certified Personal Trainer. Different body such as the endomor ph, mesomor ph and ectomor ph carr y certain characteristics. For example, dietar y interventions for the endomor ph who carries a high BMI and a low BMR should eat low fat foods particularly saturated fats, more meat alternatives such as legumes (beans, peas), soy foods, avoid salt, more fiber such as fresh wholesome foods. Avoid or reduce processed foods since they contain high levels of salt and chemicals and concentrate more on fr uits and vegetables and reduce starches since the excess are stored in the body as fat.
