34 E. Bacon, Hillsdale. Tuesday

I like honest, sincere
questions, but a few decades
ago there was an older, welleducated man in one of my
classes who would ask dishonest
questions.
These
questions were designed to
show me up and prompt an intellectual jousting match after which he
would, presumably, be seen as the victor. His questions were prompted
more out of envy and arrogance than honest inquiry.
The Apostle Paul addressed a question concerning the
resurrection by someone much like that man in my class. This question
is recorded in I Corinthians 15:35 - “But some man will say, How are
the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?” Before Paul
answers in subsequent verses, he addresses this “hypothetical” crossexaminer with one word – “Fool” (vs 36). In the Greek this word means
“mindless, ignorant and/or egotistical.” It is a term for someone that
really has not investigated or thought out matters but asks challenging
questions as though he has done so. He is not a seeker of truth; he
asks as a self-absorbed egotist trying to parade his superiority or justify
his unbelief.
What kind of questioner are you, Friend? This Easter season as
Christians celebrate the reality of the resurrection, let me encourage
you to be an honest seeker. The One Who substituted Himself for you
on the cross broke the chains of death to prove that His death
accomplished all that was necessary for you to have eternal life. Got
questions? Letʼs put on the coffee and talk or visit us on Good Friday
at 12 Noon or Easter morning at 11 am.

“Hey Gram. Have you got a book mark I could borrow?”
The shout came from upstairs where my grandson, Brian,
who is a college senior and aspiring history teacher, was
sprawled on the floor of a bedroom, surrounded by fat text
books, his lap top computer, a paperback copy of a World War
II recollection, and the remnants of a box of Girl Scout cookies.
I was downstairs with his mother, visiting and catching up
on our lives. His dad was in the kitchen, doing what he does
beautifully - preparing broiled salmon.
I checked a couple of drawers in the dining room, and
came up with two paper bookmarks depicting lighthouses of
Cape Cod, complete with details and dimensions, along with
one from Jerusalem, and another from Switzerland. I met him
half way on the stairs, and he was back to his homework.
Among the others in the drawer were six done in fabric
and carefully cross stitched by my late and very dear friend
who started kindergarten with me and we were together all
through high school. She was my maid of honor. We married,
had children, lost our mates and kept in touch through phone
calls and letters even though she was miles away in northern
Michigan. We laughed and cried through sorrow and joy and I
will keep those special bookmarks forever. She signed and
dated them in embroidery, and I smile when I use them and
then carefully put them altogether with a rubber band and lay
them in the corner of the drawer.
I was surprised when Brian asked for a bookmark. They
seem to have gone the way of buggy whips and barrel staves.
Quite often, I will grab a piece of a grocery list, or even, if I am
reading in the bathroom, a piece of toilet tissue to mark my
place. Then, when I am reading my little automated Kindle, it
just always takes me right back to where I left off. And I suppose one day, I will use it more and more. However, I still like
to have a paper page to turn, and mark, should I want to go
back and read it over again. I guess Iʼm too much of a control
freak to let machines make all my decisions for me.
In any case, the nicety of a handmade bookmark has to
be a special gift. I have others that were pressed between
pieces of plastic holding dried flowers. I was delighted when
another friend gave those to me as she had carefully collected
and saved the flowers, and when I received the gift in January
for my birthday one year, it was like spring all over again.
For some time, I collected book marks from foreign countries I visited, and then I started finding beautiful linen tea towels with pictures on them. Not sure what I had planned to do
with them all. Right now they are folded in tissue paper in my
cedar chest.
So many little bits of memories that are disappearing. I
still like book marks with funny sayings on them, along with
magnets - even though I now use those of birds that were another gift from my daughter. They are like little pieces of art.
Doilies are no longer in vogue, yet I save those made by
my late mother-in-law who taught herself to crochet and knit
and sew and even tat. Iʼm afraid I didnʼt appreciate her talent
as much as I should have at the time, and now I have those
examples stashed away in the cedar chest as well. I do, consistently use the now, very old, hankies with the beautifully crocheted borders, because I hate carrying Kleenex in my purse,
particularly if I am all dressed up. I even check out rummage
sales and antique shops for special hankies I know that must
have been carried by ladies who were taught to never leave
home without one....as I had.
As for bookmarks - I am on the hunt for special ones to
pass on to Bri, as a remembrance of me.

Top driver distractions
Distracted driving can be very dangerous.
Diverting one’s attention from the road for mere seconds can have serious, and potentially fatal, consequences.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
have found distracted driving kills more than 15 people each day while injuring more than 1,200. Any
activity that takes attention away from driving is considered a distraction. These include taking your
hands off the wheel, daydreaming or engaging in any
behavior that takes your eyes off of the road. Certain
activities are known distractions, and understanding
which habits can be dangerous and making strides
to correct behaviors can help save lives, prevent
injuries and reduce accident-related expenses.
A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration and the Virginia Tech Transportation
Institute indicates 80 percent of crashes and 65 percent of near-crashes in the United States involve
some form of driver distraction. This distraction took
place a mere three seconds before the vehicle crash.
An Allstate Canada marketing survey of 1,605
Canadian adults conducted between July 26 and
July 28 found that, although the vast majority of
Canadians thinks driving while distracted is unacceptable, nearly three out of four Canadian drivers
admits to engaging in a behavior that is considered a
distraction. That is perhaps in part because drivers
are not aware just how distracting some the following
behaviors truly are.
Using mobile phones
Leading the list of the top distractions behind the
wheel are mobile phones. Phones now do more than
just place calls, and drivers often cannot pull away
from their phones, even when driving. According to
the California Department of Motor Vehicles, studies
have shown that driving performance is lowered and
the level of distraction is higher for drivers who are
heavily engaged in cell phone conversations. The
use of a hands-free device does not lower distraction
levels. The percentage of vehicle crashes and nearcrashes attributed to dialing is nearly identical to the
number associated with talking or listening.
Accident rates have increased thanks to texting,
which involves a person taking his or her hands and
eyes off of the road. A 2009 study by Car and Driver
magazine compared the dangers of texting while
driving to the effects of driving drunk to see which
would be more dangerous under the same conditions. Measuring the time it takes to brake after being
alerted by a red light to stop, the reaction time was
recorded when the driver was legally drunk, reading
an e-mail and sending a text. Texting easily elicited
the slowest response time.
Ironically, in January 2011, Texas man Chance
Bothe drove off of a cliff after texting that he had to
stop texting or risk dying in a car accident. Bothe survived but sustained significant injuries and had to be
revived from death three times.
Moving Objects
Whether there’s a pet bouncing in the front seat
or children being boisterous in the back, passengers
and items moving around the car are significant distractions. Turning around to look at the kids or to
reach for a ball that may be rolling around on the
floor of the car can take a person’s eyes off the road.
If something really is important and needs to be
addressed, it is much safer to pull over and take care
of it before getting back on the road.
Daydreaming
Many people will admit to daydreaming behind

the wheel or looking at a person or object outside of
the car for too long. Perhaps they’re checking out a
house in a new neighborhood or thought they saw
someone they knew on the street corner. It can be
easy to veer into the direction your eyes are focused,
causing an accident. In addition to trying to stay
focused on the road, some drivers prefer the help of
lane departure warning systems.
Eating
Those who haven’t quite mastered walking and
chewing gum at the same time may want to avoid
eating while driving. The majority of foods require a
person’s hands to be taken off of the wheel and their
eyes to be diverted from the road. Reaching in the
back seat to share some French fries with the kids is
also distracting.
Try to eat meals before getting in the car. For
those who must snack while en route, take a
moment to pull over at a rest area and spend 10 minutes snacking there before resuming the trip.
Reading
Glancing at an advertisement, updating a
Facebook status or reading a book are all activities
that should be avoided when driving. Even pouring
over a traffic map or consulting the digital display of
a GPS system can be distracting.
When driving, attention should be placed on the
task of safely getting from point A to point B. All other
activities taking place in the vehicle are distractions
that can end up risking a person’s life.

Topics to discuss before hiring a mechanic
Few decisions weigh as heavily on automobile
owners as their choice of mechanic. A good mechanic
goes a long way toward ensuring drivers and their passengers stay safe on the road and that those drivers’
vehicles perform at their peak for years to come. That’s
an important role to play, and it’s why many drivers
acknowledge that choosing a mechanic is a decision
that should not be taken lightly.
Rest assured you don’t need to be a car guy or gal
to find a trustworthy and talented mechanic. You might
just need to open a dialogue with a prospective
mechanic, discussing a handful of topics that can help
you feel more comfortable and know you have made
the right choice in automotive service provider once a
final decision has been made.
Certification
Certification can go a long way toward helping
drivers find mechanics they can trust. The National

cern for many drivers, and rightfully so. Consumer
advocacy groups have exposed many mechanics who
pass off used auto parts as new parts, charging their
customers new part prices along the way. While there’s
no way drivers can guarantee they won’t fall victim to
such criminal behavior, they can inquire about company policies regarding vehicle parts. Does the garage
even install used parts? If so, do they let drivers
choose either new or used parts before any work is
done? If the garage only uses new parts, ask for parts
with solid warranties, so if the part must be replaced,
you won’t have to pay for it again.
Documentation
The preowned vehicle
market is thriving, and
drivers who take care of
their vehicles have earned
the right to reap their
rewards for being good
owners when it comes
time to sell the car. When
interviewing prospective
mechanics, ask if they are
willing to provide detailed
documentation of any
work they do on your vehicle. Such documentation
can then be shared with prospective buyers when you
want to sell the car, and it also serves as a way to
keep the garage accountable for all the work they have
done on the car throughout your relationship.
Institute for Automotive Service Excellence was founded in 1972 and continues to work to improve the quality of automotive service and repair by testing automotive technicians and certifying those who live up to or
exceed ASE standards. An ASE-certified technician
should have his or her credentials readily available to
prospective customers, and these credentials list each
professional’s area of certification. When shopping for
a new mechanic, make sure that he or she is ASE-certified. In addition, discuss with the mechanic his or her
work history, including any additional areas of expertise.
Pricing policies
Many mechanics offer free estimates, but that
should not be taken for granted. When bringing a car
in for an estimate, drivers should confirm with the
mechanic who will conduct the examination if the estimate is free or if they will be charged an inspection
fee.
In addition to any fees regarding estimates, drivers
should also inquire about labor costs and the payment
policies at the facility. Labor can be quite expensive, so
it’s best that you know these rates in advance of any
repairs being conducted on your vehicle. It’s also
important to get a rundown of the company payment
policies, especially if your vehicle is in need of potentially costly repairs. You don’t want the bill to shock you
once the work has been completed, so don’t hesitate
to be inquisitive before leaving a car at the garage.

Tips when driving in rainy conditions
Rainy weather can arrive any time
of year. While an afternoon spent
indoors watching the drops fall can be
relaxing, driving in the rain is anything
but. It requires extra concentration and
improved reaction time. Rainy conditions can be challenging and treacherous, and drivers should proceed with
caution on rain-slicked roads.
Rain is blamed for many accidents,
but many of these situations are largely
preventable among drivers who adapt
to the weather and roadway conditions.
Here are some things to consider.
* Reduced visibility occurs from
wiper blades, glare (particularly at
night) and heavy downpours. When you
are unable to see the road ahead,
including other vehicles, reduce your
speed. If the rain is coming down in torrents, pull over to the side of the road
and wait for a respite. Turn on your
lights to ensure you are visible to other
cars on the road.
* Recognize that rain can cause
slick conditions. A film of water develops on the roadways, and that can
affect the performance of your vehicle’s
tires. Less traction means the car can
slip and slide. Hydroplaning, or coast-
ing on the surface of the water, is common. Another, lesser-known condition is
slickness caused by grease and oil in
the asphalt. During a long dry spell,
these substances build up on the
roads. When it rains, the oil and water
doesn’t mix, bringing the oils to the surface and exacerbating slick conditions.
The first few hours of a rainstorm can
be quite dangerous until heavier rains
wash the oils away.
* Water spraying up onto tires and
brakes can compromise braking ability.
That means it could take longer to stop
under wet conditions. Do not tailgate
and leave extra room between vehicles.
If you drive through a puddle of water,
pump the brakes and test them out to
be sure you can stop. Brake earlier so
that other drivers understand your
intentions and can react accordingly.
* Avoid extremely large puddles.
First of all, you cannot judge the depth
of the puddle and you may end up getting stuck, especially in the event of
roadway flooding. Water splashing into
the engine compartment may damage
electrical components. Steer around
puddles to be on the safe side.
* Use extra care watching out for
pedestrians. A normally observant person may be distracted by the rain, puddles and wrangling an umbrella and
veer into the path of cars. Be mindful of
the side of the roads and where pedestrians may be, such as around parked
cars.
* Change wiper blades twice per
year. You do not want to be caught with
shoddy wiper blades in poor conditions.

Without an effective wiper blade, rain
cannot be cleared effectively from the
windshield.
* Limit distractions inside of the car
to focus even more of your attention on
the road. While some have become
accustomed to answering phone calls
or fielding questions from the backseat
while driving, avoid such distractions
when driving in the rain. Turn down the
radio if you must and encourage passengers to remain quiet until safely
home.
* Leave extra time to get to your
destination. Rain causes slowing down

wet conditions.
* Make way for emergency personnel. Accidents and bad weather are
common. Slow down or pull over to
allow emergency vehicles to pass by. If
there are flashing lights on the side of
the road, move into the left lane to give
a wide girth around first responders.
Driving in the rain requires drivers
to exercise caution. Making a few
adjustments improves safety on the
roadways.

Like most families, you are likely
looking for ways to stretch your budget.
One of the best ways to do so is by
investing in the maintenance and care
of your vehicle. For those looking to
increase the life of their car, the solution can be found at the local auto parts
store.
While the technology used in
today’s vehicles may make repairs
seem impossible, even the smallest
fixes can greatly enhance performance,
plus ease the strain on your pocketbook.
Others fear that doing work on their
car will void the warranty, but this is not
the case. In fact, the Magnuson-Moss
Warranty Act is a federal law that protects it regardless of who does the auto
repair. Fixing your car is a rewarding
experience, giving you a sense of pride
for not only learning something new,
but accomplishing the task all on your
own.
Start small
When it comes to vehicle maintenance, learn the simple jobs first.
These tasks can include checking fluids, replacing air filters and changing
the oil. The experiences learned starting small will give you the tools and
know-how to tackle larger jobs.
The experts at the Car Care
Council offer these tips for making the
most of your budget and your trip to the
local auto parts retailer.
Enhance appearance
Because household cleaners can
harm the interior and exterior surfaces
of your car, it’s important to invest in
the proper tools to give it a showroom
shine.
Simple repairs made easy
Whether you need to replace your
windshield wipers or a light bulb, your
local parts store has what you need
to fix it yourself. Many also include
catalogs or digital kiosks to assist you
in finding the right part for your car.
If you should have any questions,
an auto parts counter person can
assist.
Stock up on DIY products
The parts store makes it easy to
keep important maintenance items in
stock at home. For example, transmission fluid, oil, brake fluid and coolant
are all valuable items to have on hand.
Tackle bigger repairs
Once you’re ready to fix more
involved repairs on your own, there are
a few things you should know. The auto
parts counter staff will ask for information, such as the make, model and year
of your vehicle, as well as what kind of
engine it uses. All of this information
can be found in your owner’s manual.
From here, your parts person will help
you get what you need to do the job
right.
Personalize your ride
From floor mats to fuzzy dice, your
local parts store also has everything
you need to personalize your automobile and make a statement.
Being familiar with your local auto
parts store is the first step in enhancing
the life of your car, plus it saves you a
little cash along the way. For more tips
to keep your car performing its best,

Maintain your vehicle’s lights and wipers
(Family Features)
The windshield wipers and lights on your car
provide major elements of safety as you drive.
Lights are normal wear items that require periodic inspection and replacement. The lighting system provides nighttime visibility; signals and alerts
other drivers; and supplies light for viewing instruments and the vehicle’s interior.
In addition to replacing dimming, rapidly blinking and non-functioning lights, the following tips
from the experts at the Car Care Council can help
keep you safe:
* Keep headlights, tail lights and signal lights
FULL

REPAIRS
& PARTS
clean. External dirt and debris can dim operational
lights from being seen by others.
* Make sure that your headlights are properly
aimed. Misaimed headlights blind other drivers
and reduce your ability to see the road.
* Don’t overdrive your headlights; you should
be able to stop inside the illuminated area, otherwise you are creating a blind crash area in front of
your vehicle.
* If there is any doubt on whether or not your
headlights should be on, turn them on. Lights not
only help you see better in early twilight, they also
make it easier for other drivers to see you.

That infamous check engine light
Tips to save money
at the pump
What this common car alert means
(Family Features)
It’s a situation that has likely happened to you. You’re driving down
the road when out of nowhere the
words “check engine” illuminate from
the dashboard. While this glowing
symbol may cause you to panic,
there are a few things you should
know about this common issue.
“Motorists should not get
spooked when the check engine light
comes on,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council.
“When illuminated, the check engine
light usually means that a vehicle
system, such as the ignition, fuel
injection or emission control, is not
operating properly.”
List of common causes
Common malfunctions that can
cause the check engine light to illuminate include a faulty oxygen sensor, mass air flow sensor, or spark
plugs and wires. If the light flashes,
the condition is more critical and
must be checked immediately to prevent severe damage, which may
include catalytic converter damage.
“Even if the vehicle appears to
be running normally, ignoring the
warning light could result in more
costly repairs,” continued White. “At
the very least, the light could be
alerting you to an engine problem
that is negatively impacting fuel
economy and costing you money.”

As gas prices continue to drop,
motorists should take advantage of their
savings at the pump and invest it back
into their vehicles. By spending a little
now to increase fuel efficiency, drivers
can multiply fuel savings and save more
money at the pump, according to the Car
Care Council.
Here are a few simple steps for
motorists to be car care aware to
improve fuel efficiency and save money
in the long run:
* Engine performance: Keep your
car properly tuned to improve gas
mileage by an average of four percent.
* Tire pressure: Keep tires properly
inflated and improve gas mileage by up
to 3.3 percent.
* Motor oil: Improve gas mileage by
1 to 2 percent by using the grade of
motor oil recommended by the manufacturer.
* Air filters: Replacing clogged air filters on older vehicles can improve fuel
economy and will improve performance
and acceleration on all vehicles.
* Gas cap: Damaged, loose or missing gas caps allow gas to vaporize into
the air.
For more tips to increase savings
and fuel efficiency for your vehicle, visit
www.carcare.org.
Seek professional assistance
When scheduling service, make
sure the repair shop that examines
your vehicle has professional technicians who are trained and certified in
OBDII diagnosis and repair. The
technician will connect your vehicle’s
computer system to a diagnostic
scan tool, which will provide trouble
codes indicating why the check
engine light was activated. Once the
problem is identified and the repair is
made, the car’s computer is then
reset.
For more information about the
check engine light and other maintenance information regarding your
automobile, visit www.carcare.org.

7 signs your brakes should be inspected
(Family Features)
Preserve the life of your vehicle and enhance
overall safety with routine brake inspections on
your vehicle.
“When it comes to vehicle safety, the
brake system is at the top of the list, so have
your brakes checked by an auto service
professional at least once a year,” said Rich
White, executive director with the Car Care
Council. “Knowing the key warning signs that
your brakes may need maintenance will go a long
way toward keeping you and others safe on
the road.”
The brake care experts at the Car Care
Council recommend motorists watch for these
signs:
1. Noise: Screeching, grinding or clicking
noises when applying the brakes.
2. Pulling: Vehicle pulls to one side while
braking.
3. Low pedal: Brake pedal nearly touches the
floor before engaging.
4. Hard pedal: Must apply extreme pressure to
the pedal before brakes engage.
5. Grabbing: Brakes grab at the slightest touch
to the pedal.
6. Vibration: Brake pedal vibrates or pulses,
even under normal braking conditions.
7. Light: Brake light is illuminated on your
vehicle’s dashboard.
Brakes are a normal wear item on any vehicle
and they will eventually need to be replaced.
Factors that can affect brake wear include driving
habits, operating conditions, vehicle type and the
quality of the brake lining material. Understanding
these warning signs can help you and your family
stay safe on the road.

vehicle, visit www.carcare.org.
