REFRACTOR TELESCOPES
Refractor telescopes (also known as dioptrics) are probably what most of us think
of when we hear the word “telescope.” Refractors have a long, thin tube in
which light passes in a straight line from the front objective lens directly to the
eyepiece, at the opposite end of the tube.
Refractor telescopes have many advantages, including:
• Simplicity of design, which translates into
reliability and ease of use.
• Little or no maintenance requirements.
• Excellent lunar, planetary and binary star
viewing.
• High contrast images with no secondary mirror or diagonal obstruction.
• Sealed optical tube, to protect the optics and reduce air currents, which tend
to degrade image quality.
• Permanently mounted and aligned objective lens.
The 60mm (2.4") refractor is the most popular telescope size for beginning
astronomy enthusiasts and for casual gift-giving. This size telescope is perfect for
introducing newcomers to astronomy, at an affordable price.
For astronomical observing, the 60mm refractor allows you to see lunar details,
Saturn and its rings, Jupiter and its moons, the phases of Venus, larger globular
clusters, bright double stars and some bright nebulae. After adding an optional
solar filter, you can observe activity on the sun. In addition, a 60mm telescope
can be used for terrestrial viewing, bringing the world closer to you and allowing
you to observe wildlife, distant views and your environment.
The 70mm models serve the beginner to intermediate observer who wants
slightly more aperture than the 60mm models and allows you to see more detail
on objects.
Celestron’s 80mm and 102mm refractor models are top choices for beginning
observers who want to start with a more powerful telescope and for intermediate
level astronomers. These instruments perform equally well for viewing within
our solar system and for deep-sky observing. Starting with a more powerful telescope can be a good option when you’re looking for an instrument to grow with
as you explore the hobby of astronomy.
Celestron offers two different options in refractor telescopes: the altazimuth
mount and the equatorial mount. The economical altazimuth is the simplest
type of mount, offering two motions: altitude (up and down) and azimuth (sideto-side), for an easily achieved full range of motion. Celestron‘s equatorial models use the German equatorial mount with setting circles and slow motion controls on both the right ascension (R.A.) and declination (DEC.) axes. These features make it easier to locate and track objects.
While observing, you‘ll notice that as the earth rotates on its axis, stationary
stars appear to move across the sky. Thus, due to the earth’s rotation, the object
you‘re viewing will drift out of view in both axes, over time. A telescope on an
equatorial mount can be aimed at a celestial object and guided with the slow
motion controls to follow the object across the sky and keep it in the field of
view of your telescope.

N E W T O N I A N R E F L E C T O R TE L E S C O P E S
Newtonian telescopes (also known as catoptrics) usually use a concave parabolic primary mirror (longer focal ratios may use spherical primaries) to collect and focus incoming light onto a flat secondary (diagonal) mirror. This
secondary mirror reflects the image out of an opening at the side of the main
tube and into the eyepiece.
Newtonian reflector telescopes offer a number of excellent
features including:
• Freedom from most optical aberrations and delivery of very bright images.
• Reasonably compact and portable to focal lengths of 1000mm.
• Excellent performance observing faint deep-sky objects such as nebulae,
remote galaxies and star clusters.
• Lowest cost per square inch of aperture due to use of mirrors rather than
lenses.
• Generally fast focal ratios: f/4 to f/9.
The 76mm (3") aperture of the Firstscope 76 models offer much of the performance of the Newtonian reflector design in a compact, highly portable
instrument.
The 114mm (4.5") Newtonian equatorial telescope is the most popular size
telescope for the more serious beginning or intermediate level astronomy
enthusiast, and for good reason. The large light gathering power of this 41/2" telescope makes it ideal for deep-sky observation of galaxies, star clusters
and nebulae,as well as lunar and planetary observing. This makes for a very
useful and versatile instrument that can take an observer from the very first
time looking through a telescope’s eyepiece, through years of observing interesting subjects near and far in the night sky.
Celestron offers five different 114mm Newtonian equatorial telescopes, making it a sure bet that one of them will have just the combination of features
and performance you’re looking for.

the equatorial mount (EQ). The economical altazimuth is the simplest type
of mount, offering two motions: altitude (up and down) and azimuth (sideto-side), for an easily achieved full range of motion. The altazimuth mount
includes a slow motion control rod for easy vertical adjustments.
The equatorial model (EQ) uses the German equatorial mount with setting

S CHMIDT-C ASSEGRAIN T ELESCOPES
Celestron has long been recognized as a leader in Schmidt-Cassegrain technology. Our line of Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes ranges from the highly
portable C5+ all the way up to the powerful CG-14, and includes several cutting edge computerized telescopes. Celestron’s potent combination of superior optics, fine drive systems and well-crafted mechanics puts these telescopes
in a class by themselves.
Schmidt-Cassegrain, or catadioptric, telescopes use a combination of mirrors
and lenses to fold the optics and form an image. Incoming light enters
through a thin aspheric Schmidt correcting lens, then strikes the spherical
primary mirror and is reflected back up the tube. The light is then intercepted by a small secondary mirror which reflects the light out an opening in the
rear of the instrument, where the image is formed at the eyepiece.
Some of the advantages of the Schmidt-Cassegrain design are:
• Excellent optical systems delivering razor sharp images over a wide field.
• High performance in almost all situations; terrestrial viewing and photography; lunar, planetary and deep-sky observing; astrophotograpy with fast
film; CCD imaging.
• Best all-around, multifunction telescope design; it combines all the optical
advantages of both mirrors and lenses, while canceling their disadvantages.
• Focal ratios generally in the range of f/10, which is useful for all types of
photography.
• A telescope that’s compact, portable, easy to use, durable, virtually maintenance free and has a closed tube.
• The best near focus capability of any type of telescope design.
• Large apertures at quite reasonable prices.
• Many accessories available.
Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes are designed to meet many needs and these
compact, portable, user-friendly telescopes have a strong following. At Celestron, we pride ourselves on producing consistently superior optics and earning our customer’s devotion to the Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. Each optical system is individually hand figured and guaranteed to be diffraction limited. Fine corrections are made on the secondary mirrors, that smooths the
optical figure. To maintain tight quality control, each Celestron SchmidtCassegrain telescope is manufactured in the U.S.A.
30
Hand figuring of an optical system is a complex optical procedure done only
on a commercial basis by Celestron. The art of hand figuring does take time
but the results are easily evidenced by the superior resultant astrophotographs and viewing obtained.
Celestron’s optical testing is performed on double-pass auto-collimators in a
temperature controlled environment. This ensures the highest quality on a
consistent basis. Our commitment to the most careful optical fabrication and
most stringent testing and quality control is for one purpose: to produce the
very best Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes available anywhere.
All Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes utilize the multicoated Starbright® coatings group. High Reflectivity (HR) coatings are used on the mirrors for increased reflectivity and Anti-Reflection (AR) coatings are used on
the correcting lens for increased light transmission. In fact, Celestron’s Starbright coatings provide “the best light transmission by a large margin over
the competition,” according to Sky & Telescope magazine. In addition, the
optical systems are optimally baffled to ensure the highest contrast levels. To
provide consistent customer satisfaction and high performance, all Celestron
Schmidt-Cassegrain optical assemblies, at each aperture size, utilize the same
superior optics, whether in a basic or full featured model.

Standard 11/4" Accessories Include: 25mm SMA Eyepiece (50x), Star
Diagonal and Visual Back
6x30 Finderscope
Unique Single-Arm Fork Mount with Carrying Handle
Weight: 23 lbs.
Made in the U.S.A.
For astronomy on the go, the C5+ can’t be beat. Due to its excellent SchmidtCassegrain design and careful crafting, this telescope is a serious, high performance instrument, and its compact size makes it really portable. The total
weight of the C5+, with wedge, is just 23 lbs., making it easy to transport.
The C5+ can be equipped with many optional accessories to customize it for
your particular observing interests. The C5+ boasts a light gathering ability
which exceeds that of a 31/2" telescope by 100% and that of a 4" telescope by
50%, giving you a very powerful instrument.
The C5+ offers views of intriguing lunar details and high power planetary viewing. You can see detail in Jupiter’s equatorial belts, the beautiful ring structure
of Saturn and the polar caps of Mars. The C5+
is large enough to observe hundreds of
deep-sky objects with ease, fully resolve
many globular star clusters, and allow you
to enjoy viewing brighter nebulae, double
stars and brighter galaxies.
The C5+ is made in the U.S.A. and features Celestron’s legendary hand-figured, diffraction limited optical
system for optical performance
you can depend on. The reputation for excellence of this
telescope is such that it was
chosen by NASA, over all
other competitive models,
for several recent space
shuttle missions.
#11030
32
The optical system of the C5+ features
Starbright® coatings. An Astronomy magazine review said, “the C5 I tested contained superb optics. At high powers,
stars exhibited a clearly defined Airy
disk surrounded by a bright first diffraction ring and several successively fainter
outer rings. This was a telescope that
demonstrated how well SchmidtCassegrain optics can perform and met
Celestron‘s promise of diffraction limited optics.”
An innovative, rigid single-arm fork
mount with carrying handle makes this
telescope quite convenient to carry. The
spur gear drive has been reengineered
and utilizes a rigid polar axle with pre-loaded tapered roller bearings in a
sturdy and accurate drive system. The DEC. axis uses two pre-loaded ball
bearings for smooth, rigid movement.
All controls on the mount are precision engineered and manufactured. Sky &
Telescope magazine said, “the C5 has the smoothest focusing control I have
ever used on a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope.’’
The DC electronics of the C5+ have a built-in drive controller, activated with
an optional hand control. The R.A. motor‘s main tracking speed is an accurately regulated sidereal rate. The hand control allows fast and slow override
of the R.A. tracking speed and operation of the optional DEC. motor. A comment from the Sky & Telescope review — “the digital electronics delivered a
near perfect sidereal tracking rate.”
The C5+ is powered by a 9 volt alkaline battery and runs for 50 hours. The
C5+ can be operated in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres
(optional hand controller required).
This telescope is also an ideal choice for astrophotography and CCD imaging.
You’ll find that the C5+ is truly a multipurpose instrument — an astronomical telescope, a spotting scope and a 1250mm f/10 telephoto lens all rolled
into one instrument. Because the C5+ can perform so many functions, it has
a quick release tube assembly and unique dovetail mounting system with
safety locks, to move from one task to another with ease. The six lb. optical
tube assembly can be removed from the fork tine, without tools, in just seconds. Next, it can be mounted to a rigid photo tripod for terrestrial applications, such as bird watching, nature study, enjoying distant vistas or for use
as a 1250mm telephoto lens. Its near focus is just 20 feet, so subjects both
near and far can be observed. The C5+ can even be converted to a computerized telescope with optional accessories.
The standard equatorial wedge supplied with the C5+ has a built-in bubble
level and is adjustable from 0° to 90°.

The CG-14 is the largest of Celestron‘s CG model Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes, and is most impressive in performance. The large 14" aperture offers
306% more light gathering ability than an 8" telescope does and 96% more
than a 10" telescope. Lunar and planetary details are extraordinary when viewed
through this instrument, and the large
aperture and superb optics of the CG-14
make for very exciting deep-sky observing of diffuse and planetary nebulae,
open and globular star clusters, galaxies
and binary stars.
The CG-14 is a professional quality instrument that’s portable enough to transport easily for serious astronomical work, wherever
that may take you. The optical performance
of this telescope fully supports scientific
research and for viewing pleasure, it can’t
be beat. In addition, some of the finest
amateur astrophotographs have been
taken with the CG-14, making this telescope the top choice of many serious
astronomers.
The mount and tripod supplied with the
CG-14 are the same as those of the CG11, with the addition of two 22 lb.
counterweights for the CG-14 model.
