Chartered to Joshua Stanton and sixty-one others on August 22, 1781 as a township of 23,040 acres. The name was given in honor of Major Gen. Oliver Wolcott, one of the original proprietors. The quality soil produces fine crops of the grains and grasses indigenous to the latitude, while the rich pasturage of its many hill slopes afford sustenance to many herds of cattle. Beautiful views are afforded throughout the town, the most accessible of which being from the cemetery near Wolcott village, where one may obtain a sweep of the fine country in Lamoille Valle—through Morristown, Hyde Park and Johnson, to the mountains, and south into Washington county. Hardwick offers scenic northern mixed forest and the trails offer a pleasant wooded walk. Nearby State Parks & Forests East Hill Wildlife Management Center 11 minutes - The East Hill Wildlife Management Area offers 962 acres of public land for hunting, fishing, and much more. The WMA has excellent populations of deer, black bear, moose and more. Wolcott Pond, included in the WMA, has many fish species including bass, perch and bullhead. Lake Elmore and Elmore Mountain, which rises almost from the lake’s shore, are prominent features of the town. CC Putnam State Forest 44 Minutes—The park had its beginning in 1936 when the town of Elmore and local citizens made a gift of 30 acres on Lake Elmore to the state of Vermont. With modest means, a picnic and beach area were created. Today, the park offers 755 acres for boating, fishing, hiking and more. . It is about 85 miles in length. Lake Elligo 14 Minutes—Fishermen will find a variety of fish including lake trout and others here. Whether you’re trolling, fly fishing or spinning, your chances of getting a bite here are good. So grab your favorite fly fishing rod and reel, and head out to Lake Elligo. Link: Lake Elligo Caspian Lake 23 Minutes— Caspian Lake is a 789 acre lake located in Greensboro, Vermont. Caspian is a beautiful country lake hidden between Route 14 and 16. Many of the lakefront owners have owned for generations. They come from near and far to enjoy the picturesque waters for fishing (Brook, Brown, Rainbow, Lake Trout and Salmon), boating, swimming and relaxing. Link: Green River Buck Lake Wildlife Management Area 29 Minutes— Located in the town of Woodbury and home to one of two Green Mt Conservation Camps operated by the VT Fish & Wildlife Dept. Buck Lake is open for regulated hunting, fishing and trapping. Fishing Green River Reservoir is restricted to walk-in and car-top 29 Minutes—The 653-acre Reservoir carry-in boats or canoes. Link: Buck includes about 19 miles of shoreline— Lake one of the longest stretches of undeveloped shorelines in Vermont. Access to the park is in the southern Skiing, Snowmobiling, Snowshoeing VAST Trails Near the intersection of Town Hill Rd and RT-15, Corridor 101F1 sits and connects to the larger Corridor 101. Check VAST website for more information. Stowe 45 Minutes - Each of the trails at Stowe Mountain Resort offer a unique experience - hence "The Great 48." Because no two trails are alike, individualism and selfexpression awaken within those who explore the mountain's character. The mythology and magnetism of Stowe are the inspiration that continues to bring the community at large to this special place.
