An Interview With Our Superintendent
Fairmont Fact
Prior to 1983, Kettering had two high schools: Fairmont East and Fairmont West. When the schools
combined to create Fairmont High School, the mascots were also combined. The East Falcons and the
West Dragons can both be seen in today’s Firebird. .
See the Athletic page for an image of the two mascots
becoming one!
In your experience, what can potential students expect from Fairmont
High School?
"I believe Fairmont is one of the premier high schools in the state of
Ohio. We have an outstanding staff, the best possible facilities, an
energetic student body, a supportive community and a tradition of
excellence that is real, sustainable and recognized through out the
Miami Valley.”
What personal comment would you make to encourage a family to
join the Fairmont High School family?
"My son received a great education at Fairmont High School."

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM (IB)
STANDARD COURSES: Most courses at Fairmont High School are designed as
standard high school courses, and these utilize the standard grade point scale.
These courses fulfill the general and college prep curriculum unless otherwise
noted in the course descriptions.
HONORS (H) COURSES: Courses designated as Honors (H) are enriched and offer
acceleration beyond ordinary high school standard courses. There is more indepth coverage of curriculum objectives, a quicker pace, increased rigor, additional homework and greater responsibility for outside projects, etc. Grades for
honors courses receive an additional .5 quality points over standard courses.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) COURSES: The Advanced Placement (AP) courses at
Fairmont are directly aligned to curriculum requirements established by the Advanced Placement Program sponsored by the College Board, a non-profit membership organization. This nationally-recognized program allows students to participate in college-level courses and exams during their high school experience.
Grades for AP courses receive an additional one quality point over standard
courses. Students may choose AP courses with the recommendation of their
teachers and with completion of any stated pre-requisites. AP courses are accelerated to a collegiate level, require strong reading/writing skills, and in some cases
where noted, require outside summer reading prior to beginning the course.

The Fairmont Career Tech programs are unique. They are skill-based programs that
enhance a student’s ability to choose a career. Challenging Tech Prep programs guide
a student through a 4-year program plus 2 years of college courses. The Tech Prep
student can then advance to a baccalaureate degree if they so choose.
Career Tech programs increase a student's versatility in achieving success on the job,
in college, in the military or wherever their paths may lead. Following the career pathways described in the Program of Studies, students can choose to enter one of the
elective credit, high tech courses.

The Interactive Media program allows students to experience aspects
of television and radio broadcasting, audio and video editing, lighting
and videography that most students don’t get to experience until college. Students develop their skills by producing programs for campus
and corporate customers using portable cameras, the on-campus television and radio studios and graphics and editing software.
Students can earn college credit at Sinclair Community College as well
as earn a $3000 Sinclair scholarship.
The Fairmont radio station, WKET, provides students with hands-on
radio broadcasting experience. Television programs aired on public
access tv stations offer the same for those interested in television
broadcasting.

A music program would not be complete without a choir. In 20062007, all three choirs went to state while the Eleventh Hour a cappella

Fairmont has a rich athletic history. Fairmont High has won 13
state titles. In 2006-2007, the Fairmont boys’ soccer and bowling
(a first year varsity sport) teams were Regional champions and 5
wrestling Firebirds qualified for districts.
Both the 2007 boy’s
and girl’s basketball teams routed other teams at the 2-year Trent
arena both placing in some of the higher positions of the GWOC
division.
There is a sport to meet the interest of the athlete from boy’s, as
well as, girl’s volleyball to track/field to cross country to swimming
to field/roller hockey to golf. Athletics are an important part of the
total school program. Participation in the Firebird Athletics’ programs enhances a student’s educational experience as evidenced
by the caring attitude presented during the boy’s last 2007 regular
season basketball. Coach Hank Bias asked Matty Kauffman, the
team’s Down Syndrome manager, to don an old “00” jersey and
play in a regulation game to a cheering, heartwarming Firebird
crowd at Trent Arena. His beaming smile will never be forgotten by
the Kettering community.

#4 Student Diversity
In 2007, Fairmont is a high school for approximately
2,600 different individuals with varying backgrounds
and ethnicities. When asked to list the top three qualities of Fairmont, student diversity bubbled to the surface. Entering as a Freshman from a smaller school to
a high school of Fairmont’s proportion, can be overwhelming. Yet, there is a place for everyone.
Students feel a sense of acceptance because there all
kinds of people - anyone can find a group with whom to
“hang” out.

#3 One of the Best Career Technical Programs in the State
Diverse programming for diverse students… The Career Tech Program is designed for students who learn best through hands-on activities rather than sitting and listening to lectures. In 2007, Fairmont’s Allied Health program received a superior rating for their childhood obesity project, “Time to Be a Healthy Me” in the Tech Prep
Showcase 2007. Their team won at the state level and will compete
at Nationals in May 2007. Marketing students volunteered at Flyin’
to the Hoops, a local basketball tournament sponsored by Sports
Image. While at the tournament, the students were able to network
with ESPN, college recruiters and HBO, who was there filming a documentary, giving the students an inside edge on future jobs and professions.
Most recently, Fairmont has incorporated a certified engineering program, one of only 11 programs in the state. (see the Engineering
Program page under Fairmont Specialties)

Kim Richey (1975) Country/
Western singer/songwriter - In
high school, she started playing guitar but didn't rack up
much stage time until in college. That was when she started
a band and sang a lot of harmony. After college, she did a
lot of moving, to and through
Colorado, Washington, South
America, Boston, Europe, and occasionally Nashville. Serving a stint as a cook at the Bluebird
Café didn't do much harm to pull her into the
singer/songwriter fold. In 1988, Richey planted
her roots in Nashville to really test that fold
and hone her own songwriting craft. She built a
reputation as a singer who could interpret a
lyric and harmonize with the best of them, all
the while writing songs with an optimistic melancholy quality that is unusual and alluring.
Before too long, Richey was signed to PolyGram
Records, releasing her eponymous debut in 1995.

“I’m teaching at Fairmont because I went to school here
(Fairmont West), and I couldn’t think of a place I’d rather
teach. The staff at Fairmont is one of the best you’ll find
anywhere. I love teaching here because we have a topnotch English program and English teachers; we have students, who, for the most part, come to school to learn; and
we have a community that supports our schools. It’s a great
place for kids because we have extra-curricular activities to
appeal to diverse types; we have excellent art and music
programs; we have high level classes for those students up
to the challenge; we have a great facility; and we have a
staff willing to put in the extra hours to try to meet the
needs of our students.” Penni Meyer

“I think Fairmont is a great place to work because we have exceptional teachers. They
are dedicated and work hard to bring their
best to kids. I am constantly learning new
things from my colleagues and they never
stop trying to make Fairmont a positive place
to be. I also love the diversity of our school.
Everyone at Fairmont has a place.
I’m proud to be a Kettering teacher because
the schools are so embraced by the community. I teach science and have the resources
and facilities I need to teach with a strong
emphasis on lab activities. My students can
do really cool things in lab because we have
the materials to do just that.” Pat Fife

“I graduated from Fairmont East in 1967 (sounds like a long
time ago). I enjoyed high school, it was a great place. I had very
good teachers that were positive, caring, and seemed to enjoy
the things they were doing. I loved it so much I wanted to come
back. When I got out of school I was lucky enough to get a job at
East. I have been here for 35 years and still enjoy it. We have a
great staff and administration. The staff is just what I saw as a
student. The staff is caring, positive, and enjoys being here. The
people I work with help make this place. We are willing to help
one another. People here are great at sharing their good ideas.
The staff cares about kids and one another. We have many good
students and working with them trying to get them to work to
their potential is a challenge. Staff members at the high school
are professional and are seeking ways to get kids to reach that
potential. I think this is a great place because the staff keeps
working with kids even when it is difficult. You never know when
you will do something that will result in a turn around for a student. Most people here like being here and are supportive of one
another.” Chris Griggs

“I wanted to teach at Fairmont because I
wanted to contribute to the great reputation
the school has in this area. I love teaching at
Fairmont because it provides so many opportunities for students. Everyday, I learn something new about the school and what it has to
offer and I am amazed. I tell my students
everyday how lucky they are to have so many
choices, not just with classes but with extracurricular activities. Because of this, Fairmont provides a strong foundation to prepare
students to become life-long learners and to
be successful in their futures.”
