BOARD PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Friends,
Another very productive year has passed at Tyler Arboretum and we are pleased to
share our successes with you. 2014 was a special year for Tyler as we celebrated our
70th anniversary, and our dedicated staff and volunteers worked very hard to make
this the best year yet. We had another successful year of strengthening the five areas
of engagement at Tyler: connections, celebrations, collaborations and partnerships,
stewardship, and giving.
I would like share some of our recent accomplishments in the past year with our
stakeholders. In 2014, Tyler’s summer camps completely sold out! Over 475 children
participated in the assorted camps to better learn about our natural world. These
children will be the next generation of nature-lovers at Tyler and we are excited to
have them here. We are moving forward nicely toward the start of our Pink Hill
restoration project. With funding of $330,000 raised in 2014, we are now able to
proceed with the land clearing, grading and deer fence construction to enable us to
preserve this incredible natural resource at Tyler. We finished construction on yet
another tree house called the Tulip Tree House. The whimsical “leaflike” shape of this
tree house attracts the fancy of all our visitors. It is located along the Scenic Loop path
as you approach the meadow. Take a look when you next visit the Arboretum.
You, our loyal donors, increased your Annul Fund giving in 2014 by 12.5 percent for a
total of over $162,000. We thank you so much for your support and generosity. Tyler
could not operate without this support from our community. Now we can move forward
with big projects planned for 2015, such as the Historic Painter Plants Exhibit. This
display will recreate the planting techniques used by the Painter brothers for their
botanical studies over 150 years ago. Finally, we launched our very own Tyler Arboretum
mobile app for Apple products. This incredible app gives visitors mobile access to our
hiking trails, calendars, special features and much more. You can even donate to Tyler
from the app!
All of this and much more made Tyler a premier destination and community resource
in 2014. As we move into 2015, we remain committed to continuing our standard of
excellence among public gardens in Pennsylvania and the mid-Atlantic region. We
thank our dedicated members, donors, volunteers and visitors for their continued
support. These successes are not possible without our generous supporters.

Connections
Tyler thrives on its connections not only
to the natural area which it stewards,
but also among the many connections
to the many people who support it.
INTERGENERATIONAL
NATURE DISCOVERIES
Tyler is a place where age barriers do
not exist. In 2014, several enhancements
and improvements brought families and
individuals of all ages to Tyler. The Totally
Terrific Tree Houses exhibit was expanded
with the completion of the Tulip Tree
House. Interpretive signage was added to
the Painter Plants collection, and plans
were started for a paved path through the
area known as the “Old Arb.”
“While visiting relatives we had the
pleasure of visiting the arboretum.
A true delight with dedicated
knowledgeable staff.”
“Originally was going to Ridley Creek
State Park but saw this was next door and
had unique things that we decided to go
here instead. We have a 4-year-old and
twin 2-year-olds. This was a great place
for them. Got to climb on tree houses and
wander around. Was sort of like an outdoor
jungle gym. We didn't even get to see
everything after two hours since the kids
were getting tired. Will be back to see more.”
“Of course we traveled to Tyler to see the
tree houses. But we found so much more.
This is an easy walking park, with both
paved, wooded and grassy trails. Your day
could be as strenuous or easy as you wanted.
The kids had such a great time exploring
the tree houses and we found many hidden
fairies. This was an easy drive from the
Baltimore area for a day trip. We packed
a picnic lunch which was great.”
“This is my favorite arboretum in the
Philadelphia area. Yes, the trees are
beautiful, and the walks are great. But the
tree houses (interesting to young and old)
are so much fun, they make the park
unique, so glad they kept them up after
the initial exhibition.”

20 school districts in Delaware, Chester, Philadelphia and
Montgomery counties as well as schools in New Jersey,
Delaware and Maryland. Tyler provided 173 programs with
7,044 participants:
MARKETING EFFORTS
Tyler restructured its online calendar of programs and events
for easier searching and categorization. This proved beneficial
when, with the help of SAP’s Senior Technical Consultant
Binu Nair, staff worked together to
create Tyler’s first mobile app. The app
gave Apple product users an interactive
digital way to connect with nature.
$ 154 field trips to Tyler with 6,087 participants
$ 19 outreach programs with 957 participants (an increase
from 2013 of 10 programs and 607 participants)
The app features real-time GPS
guidance for the hiking trails,
descriptions of all of the garden
features, tree houses and historic
buildings, an interactive map of the
entire Arboretum, ways to donate,
become a member or follow Tyler,
and a calendar of events that pulls
directly from the website.
Monthly email distributions of Tyler
Tidbits continued. This monthly
digital campaign highlighted
upcoming events and important
topics going on at Tyler between
quarterly newsletters; it was designed
to drive traffic back to the website for
the most up-to-date information
about Tyler. We saw positive results in
increased web traffic and attendance at events and programs.
YOUTH AND FAMILY PROGRAMS
Tyler had a significant change in youth and family programs,
both in the number of programs offered and in attendance at
these programs. Youth and family programs had 151 programs
with 2,072 participants—40 fewer programs than 2013, but
just as many participants!
$ Summer Camp
These efforts also led to a substantial increase in social media
followership and engagement. In 2014, Tyler added almost
1,000 new followers on Facebook, 240 new followers on
Twitter, over 100 followers on the new LinkedIn page, and
over 70 followers on the new Pinterest page.
In 2014, Summer Camp was as popular as ever. We ran
eight weeks of Tiny Trackers and Young Explorers camp
(ages 4-11) and five weeks of Young Naturalists camp (ages
11-13). Attendance was 469 campers generating $92,012,
an increase of $8,540 in revenue.
A new Membership brochure and a new Volunteer brochure
were added, thus increasing brand awareness.
SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Maintaining strong connections with local school-age
children, their parents and educators has been a long-term
goal of Tyler for quite some time. Cultivating these future
environmental stewards helps ensure Tyler’s longevity. 2014
was a successful year for educational efforts, when Tyler served

ADULT PROGRAMS
While Tyler is a phenomenal place to connect children with
nature, it also serves as a perfect place to re-connect adults
with the natural world. 2014 was an extremely successful
year for bringing adults back to the Arboretum, due in part
to the popularity of the diverse programs offered throughout
the year. From guided tours of historic buildings to volunteerled hikes, gardening classes to nature photography workshops,
Tyler is a community leader in connecting people to each
other and the activities that bring them together. In 2014,
Tyler offered 230 programs with 1,802 participants
(an increase from 2013, with 170 programs with 1,742
participants). Those programs included:
B Adult (fee-based) – 105 programs with 787 participants
(up from 2013: 54 programs with 515 participants)
B Adult (free with admission) – 125 programs with 1,015
participants
Tyler was also a co-sponsor with five other Delaware Valley
public gardens of the annual Woody Plant Conference which
had over 560 participants drawing from the mid-Atlantic
region to hear national and international speakers focusing on
trees and shrubs.
MEMBERS ONLY EVENTS
AND PROGRAMS
Tyler depends on its members and strives to reward members
as often as possible with members-only incentives, including
members-only events and programs that bring these
like-minded individuals and families together. The spring
Eggstravaganza brought 245 members to the Arboretum for
an Easter Egg Hunt (over 100 more people than the year
before!) and Tyler’s annual Ice Cream Social in July was once
again a member favorite, with 126 members in attendance.
Members were also treated to a special dedication of the new
Tulip Tree House and 119 participants enjoyed the Family
Owl Prowls and Tyler After Dark Adventures.

The students and staff accomplished numerous projects
including Pink Trail maintenance, invasive plant removal in
the Native Woodland Walk, mulching in the Vegetable
Demonstration Garden and dead wood removal in the
Rhododendron and Lilac Collections. After lunch, the
interns had a chance to hear from professionals in the field,
ask questions and get advice.
INTERSHIPS AT TYLER
Tyler welcomes interns from several different disciplines
to get hands-on work experience in a thriving non-profit
environment. This year we had five students from different
disciplines of study representing three different universities
and we are proud to call them Tyler family! The 2014
interns included:

scholarship, was a Horticulture intern in Fall 2014
Tyler Arboretum hosted the 2014 Regional Intern Outreach
Workday on July 10, 2014 (see photo below). The goal of the
Regional Intern Outreach Workday is to hold a meaningful
outreach experience for regional interns that focuses on
service learning while providing opportunities for
networking and professional enrichment. Nine regional
gardens participated with a total of 80 people in attendance,
including students, garden staff and panel members.
Gardens represented at the event were Chanticleer, Jenkins
Arboretum, Longwood Gardens, Morris Arboretum,
Mt. Cuba Center, Scott Arboretum, Temple Ambler,
Tyler Arboretum and Winterthur.

Celebrations
Tyler’s beautiful natural settings provide the perfect
backdrop for celebrations both big and small. In fact,
celebrations at Tyler provide an important source of
revenue for the general operating budget.
TYLER AT TWILIGHT
The annual Tyler at Twilight auction and garden
party is a delightful occasion that brings together
guests who are looking to give back to Tyler
while competing in silent and live auctions for
quality goods and services donated from regional
and community businesses and organizations.
Local restaurants provided a variety of delicious
cuisines for guests while cocktails and music
set the atmosphere at this outdoor event. The
June 12, 2014 Tyler at Twilight event raised
$100,071 in net income from 250 guests, with
$57,000 in sponsorships.
VOLUNTEER RECEPTION
It is a fact that Tyler cannot function without its
dedicated and dependable volunteer corps. Every
year, the staff holds an event to offer gratitude
and recognition to these volunteers who are so
generous with their time and talents by hosting
the Volunteer Reception. The 2014 Volunteer
Reception celebrated 76 attendees with food and
drinks followed by the President's Volunteer
Service Awards and words of thanks from staff
(see p. 16 for more details).

PUBLIC EVENTS
Tyler strives to create diverse, fun and educational events for
members and visitors to experience Tyler in new and exciting
ways. These events also contribute to annual net revenue.
$ The Pancake Breakfast and Maple Sugaring Celebration
is an annual event held in February that combines an
educational hands-on demonstration of how sap is turned
into syrup and a tasty
all-you-can-eat pancake
and sausage breakfast.

the public. The Plant Sale is a

Preview Sale (open exclusively
for Tyler Arboretum members)
on May 2, 2014 had 387 members in attendance and the
Public Sale on May 3, 2014
had an additional 838 attendees. The two-day sale garnered
a net income of $33,146.
$ Tyler hosts several festivals during the summer months. The
explosion of blooms and lush greenery combined with
warmer temperatures and school break means a fantastic
opportunity to bring new visitors and faithful members into
the Arboretum. These events include simple educational
components, arts and crafts, and unique elements of fun.

PUMPKIN DAYS
Pumpkin Days, a two-day family fall festival, was held on
October 18-19, 2014. The public was invited to this annual
event which was not only an enjoyable time filled with family
friendly activities, games, demonstrations, performances and
food, but also served as Tyler’s largest (in terms of number of
attendees) public fundraiser of the year. Tyler raised $38,528
net income with 3,226 people in attendance over the
two-day festival.
ECO-BIRTHDAYS
Eco-birthdays are a special way to help your child celebrate
their birthdays with a nature twist. Celebrants enjoy a
one-hour nature program or walk, followed by a full hour
for your own activities and refreshments in a private room.
Twenty eco-birthday parties were hosted at Tyler in 2014
with 284 children participating.

WEDDINGS
Tyler’s natural beauty and indoor facilities make for a stunning
and ideal wedding location. In partnership with Jeffrey A.
Miller Catering, Tyler hosted 26 weddings from April-October,
2014, which brought in 2,947 guests to the Arboretum.
Weddings provide a substantial source of income, garnering
$124,426 for 2014.
CELEBRATING 70 YEARS OF
TYLER ARBORETUM
Tyler celebrated its 70th anniversary of being a public arboretum
in 2014. To mark the occasion, we held several contests to
garner visitor participation. We offered a photography contest
for adults, using the theme “Celebrating 70 Years of Tyler.”
Entries were narrowed down to a top 20 by staff, and then the
public voted for their favorites via Facebook. The top five
entries were framed and put on permanent display at Tyler.
We asked our young visitors to show their love for the Arboretum
by making a birthday card for Tyler. Several impressive and
creative cards were submitted and each winner from each age
category won a $10 Tyler gift certificate and a blue ribbon.
All winners were announced at the Butterfly Festival and
we had some fantastic visitor support in helping us celebrate
70 years!

As with any non-profit organization, Tyler depends on
collaborations and partnerships within the region to
bring greater awareness to Tyler’s role as a community
asset. Tyler enjoys many long-standing relationships
with artisans, media outlets, professional
organizations, schools, societies and more.

MEDIA FOOD BANK
Every week during the growing season, vegetables
are harvested from Tyler’s demonstration vegetable garden and the abundance is donated to
the Media Food Bank at the First United
Methodist Church in Media, PA. This food bank
is a valuable community resource, providing food
to 55-65 families each week. Tyler was pivotal in
providing fresh, organic vegetables to families in
need within our local community. In 2014, Tyler
donated 1,017 lbs of fresh food from the garden.

Volunteers
In 2014, 594 active volunteers donated over 13,100 hours
to Tyler. Civic and corporate groups offered another 481
hours. From individuals to corporate volunteers, their
contributions were paramount to a successful year. In fact,
for 2014, there were 13 Bronze Awards (100 – 249 service
hours), 4 Silver Awards (175 – 249 hours), 4 Youth Bronze
Awards and 1 Youth Silver Award given at the 2014 Volunteer
Reception. Some accomplishments by volunteers included:
Butterfly House
The Butterfly House got some TLC in 2014 in preparation
for new improvements provided by a donation from Axalta
Coating Systems. Butterfly House volunteers did an outstanding
job sprucing up the House and garden.
Handy Person
Several individuals donated their handy work skills in two big
projects. The porch at historic Lachford Hall was completely
renovated and the benches in the Arboretum were repaired.

They also helped assemble and place display labels for the new
Heuchera and Hosta plantings in the Rhododendron Garden,

Bluebird Boxes
Our fledge count for bluebirds was only 52 in 2014. Suzanne
Clauser, lead, attributes this to the colder than usual winter in
2014. Of the 40 bird boxes, 2 were replaced.

Stewardship

statement is the principle of engendering
stewardship among its members
and its community.
ACCESSIONS
Tyler had 72 new
accessions in 2014,
consisting of 370
plants. 32 of those
plants were donated
to us, including 28
native trees from
Scott Wade, two
historic roses from
Wyck House and
two trees donated
by Mt. Cuba Center.
201 plants were purchased through funding from the Stanley
Smith Horticultural Trust. These plants were planted
primarily in masses around the Scenic Loop and in the
Rhododendron Collection.
CURATORIAL WORK
Tyler’s historic legacy took center stage in 2014 as we celebrated
70 years as a public arboretum. The original 1681 deed from
William Penn was digitally scanned and reproduced. The
reproduction appeared in a special one-day exhibition at the
Longwood Graduate Symposium, and was displayed in the
Lachford museum after its return. A successful history blog
called Tyler Tales was started, with contributors from different
areas of the Arboretum.
Also in 2014, Tyler took part in a special program by the
Historical Society of Pennsylvania, called the Hidden
Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival
Repositories. The goal of the project was to make the
collections of small archival repositories in the Philadelphia
region better known. Two archivists came to the Arboretum,
surveyed the archival collections, and created finding aids
along two primary lines of provenance – the organizational
materials of Tyler Arboretum and the remaining archival
materials from the Minshall-Painter family. The archivists
surveyed all materials, created finding aids and made
recommendations related to the condition and care of the
archival collections. The finding aid for Tyler can be found
now at the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special
Collections Libraries (PACSCL) finding aid site and in
the Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s History Affiliates
Organization Directory.
