Notre Dame de Paris – 850th Anniversary Bells

P
aris “the eternal city” has always been a
place of pilgrimage for romantics, artists and
kings and of all its buildings the Cathedral of
Notre Dame is one of the most recognisable and
is considered a foremost example of Gothic
architecture. Notre Dame is the Cathedral of the
Archdiocese of Paris and construction of the
present building commenced in 1163 on the
order of the then Bishop Maurice de Sully.
The main apse and choir were completed in
1182 but it was not until 1250 that the twin
western towers which house the main bells were
completed. Final stages of the construction
continued until 1345 by which time the famous
rose windows, stained glass and some of the
earliest examples of flying buttresses were in
place. The 850th anniversary of its foundation
falls in 2013 and amongst celebrations for this
milestone it was decided to install a new ring of
bells. I was privileged to attend a press briefing

The old bells
Records show the use of bells back in the
12th century and the first large or “bourdon”
bell named Marie was installed in 1378. By
1769 there were eight bells in the North tower,
two bourdon bells Emmanuel and Marie in the
South tower, seven bells in the central spire and
three clock bells in the north transept, making a
grand total of twenty bells. During the French
Revolution in 1791 all the bells except the
bourdon Emmanuel were taken out of the
Cathedral and melted down. Emmanuel, cast in
1686, was moved to the South tower in 1802.
Restoration in the 19th century by Viollet-leDuc included repairs to the belfry and the
casting in 1856 of four new bells named
Angelique-Francoise, Antionette-Charlotte,
Hyacinthe-Jeanne and Denise-David. These bells
were installed in the north tower and, together
with Emmanuel and three bells each in the spire
and north transept raised the total back to eleven.
The bells sounding the quarter hours were
converted to electric operation in 1923 and the
bourdon Emmanuel similarly treated in 1930

tower in February, 2012 and reverted to the
Government as owner under the Regional
Culutral Affairs Directorate. There was at the
time some controversy and concern amongst
Parisiens that the bells would be lost but
interested parties are considering the best
means of preserving the bells as part of French
history. It seems likely that they will be
exhibited in close proximity to the Cathedral
for the benefit of both locals and tourists.
The New bells project
The reasons to install new bells were twofold; first to celebrate the 850 years since
foundation and second that the four bells of
1856 were of poor quality, not in tune with
each other and one being cracked. A committee
was set up to steer the project under the
leadership of Monseigneur Patrick Jacquin,
Rector and chief priest of the Cathedral with
architectural input from M. Benoit Ferre, M.
Benjamin Mouton architect for Historic
Monuments and, on behalf of the Ministry of
Cultural Affairs, M. Regis Singer an expert on
campanological matters. The total cost of the
scheme was some two million Euros, all raised
by donations including special grants for the
new bourdon bell “Marie” by the Bettencourt
Schueller Foundation and for the bell “Gabriel”
by the Sisley Foundation.
The project specification was for eight new
bells to be installed in the North tower
replacing the four bells of 1856 and with a
new bourdon to be located in the South tower
alongside “Emmanuel”, the bourdon which
was the only main bell to survive the French
Revolution period. Following invitation of
tenders the casting of eight new bells was
awarded to the Cornille-Havard Foundry of
Villedieu-les-Poeles, located in the Manche
Department south of Caen. The village has a
population of some 4,000 and the foundry has
been operating there since 1865.
The casting of the largest bourdon bell
weighing in at six tons was awarded to the
Royal Eijsbouts foundry of Asten, Holland
whose foundry has operated since 1872. The
decision to go outside France may well have
been influenced by Eijsbouts’ involvement
with the massive UK Olympic bell since this
was mentioned in press releases.
Details of the new bells
The casting of the bells used traditional
methods but there was additional detail in the
decoration of each bell not only with names
and inscriptions but also with friezes depicting
religious and historic subjects. The decorations
had been devised and applied by Virgine
Bassetti an artist, she having spent twenty
years specialising in contemporary bell work.
Like many continental bells, the main group
of eight were given a highly polished finish
but the Dutch-cast bourdon was finished in a
grey patina considered fitting as an
accompaniment to its 17th century sister.
The bell data is shown in the table below.
The new bourdon will be housed in the
South tower alongside “Emmanuel”, which
holds a special place in Paris history having
sounded out for both the armistice on 11th
November, 1918 and for the Liberation of
Paris on 25th August 1944. The remaining
eight new bells will be housed in the North
tower and all will be rung by electrically
operated swing chime apparatus.

Editorial
Under English law the Church of England
has its own procedure for regulating repairs,
alterations and additions to churches, their
contents and churchyards. It is known as as
the Faculty Jurisdiction. A faculty is the
formal document of diocesan approval to
undertake a specified set of works.
Those of you who enjoy Tom Harris’s
entertaining take on faculty processes and
procedures (p.281), may be interested to
know that there is a useful reference
document on the Central Council website:
“The Faculty Jurisdiction – A Guide for
Bellringers”. The Council’s Towers &
Belfries Committee should also be able to
help with advice in specific cases where the
requirements of the jurisdiction are in any
doubt. (see http://www.cccbr.org.uk/

Sam Austin’s letter (p.282) illustrates,
once again, that it is possible to introduce
ringing successfully into schools and that
such efforts are never wasted. While it is
true that a school ringing society may not
always survive the departure of an
enthusiastic leader, the long term benefit to
the Exercise of such a society flourishing –
if only for a few years – should not be
underestimated.
We have already received a lot of interest
from teams wishing to participate in this
year’s Ringing World National Youth
Contest at York on Saturday, 6th July. May
we remind you that the closing date for
applications is Friday, 26th April – so please
don’t delay if you wish to enter a team.

Colin Turner’s extraordinary peal ringing
career continues apace and we salute him on
becoming the first ringer ever to reach a peal
total of 6,000 (see back page). He has already
proved himself to be a ‘Giant of the Exercise’.

Installation and celebrations
Following their casting, the 9 new bells
were timed to arrive by road on 31st January,
accompanied through Paris streets by a police
escort in late afternoon. The bells were taken
into the nave of the Cathedral, closed to the
public for security. There followed on
Saturday, 2nd February with, amongst others,
assembled primary school children to witness
an 11am service of Benediction (blessing) of
eight bells by Cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois,
Archbishop of Paris. This was followed by a
5pm service of Bendiction of the new bourdon
bell “Marie” in the presence of 1,500 older
children, the involvement of both groups of
children being part of Children’s Jubilee Year.

Between 3rd and 25th February, all nine bells
were exhibited to the public and drew many
additional Parisians eager to see “their” bells.
This was on top of the usual tourists whose
numbers amount to some 14 million a year!
It was during this exhibition period that press
conferences were given, with privileged
members being allowed inside the ropes.
My session was presented by M. Regis Singer
who, for the benefit of those journalists
unfamiliar with bells, gave a description of bell
manufacture and demonstrated harmonies using
tuning forks on the bells. A very full coverage
was given of the project and in speaking to
M. Singer afterwards it transpired that he had
visited the Whitechapel foundry in London.
Following public exhibition the bells were
due to be installed in the towers over the
weekend of 2nd March and the first sounding
of the new ensemble to take place on Saturday,
23rd March at 6.15pm ready for Palm Sunday.
The 850 years celebrations had started back in
December 2012 and various exhibitions and
musical events will continue until official
closure of the Jubilee on 24th November, 2013.

Postscript: Had I visited one week earlier
on 12th February, Notre Dame was invaded by
a group of Ukrainian feminist protesters called
FEMEN who paraded topless and jumped the
ropes to hammer on the bells before being
hurriedly escorted out. A photograph is
attached! Recruitment material?
What’s a ‘Faculty’
between friends?
Ever since I became conscious of the most
simple, basic administrative workings of the
Church through PCC co-option, albeit some
years ago now, I have gradually become more
aware and hence more concerned almost to a
degree of dread, about the word “faculty”. I
still haven’t got a clear understanding of
precisely what it means and what it entails
doing, or not doing. Which perhaps is just as
well really.
In essence, I think rightly or wrongly, it
means that if one wishes to make any, even
relatively minor, alteration to the structure of
the Church building, one has to apply for a
“faculty”. I don’t know, but I’m sure someone
will tell me, whether this is more related to the
building being a Grade I listed edifice or
simply being the property of the Diocese,
Church of England or even the Queen as Head
of the Church. In any event, I am lead to
believe that obtaining a faculty, probably
requiring many reams of A4, can be a lengthy
and time-consuming process, maybe up to six
months or more possibly?
What, fortunately, completely eludes me,
and in some ways I hope will continue to do
so, though ignorance is no defence in law, is at
what level ‘alteration to the structure of the
Church’ applies. I was ringing at a delightful,
beautiful though lonely little 6-bell parish
church in Somerset on the Blackdown Hills
some few months ago. I mentioned a new,
rather large peal board I noticed hanging on
their wall, very recently fixed there by some
visiting ringers. Ostentatious might be a word
for this 2 feet by 3 feet board, especially
considering it was virtually the only one.
Someone of their home band, obviously also a
bit put out about it, suggested its size and
multiple drilled fixings being of the order of
magnitude as to require a faculty; that dread
word again, even if half in jest, I hope.
One of the great anomalies that can haunt
one’s night’s rest is the thought of a bell
cracking or breaking. Often ‘disposable’ bits,
like ropes, need replacing and that’s OK. But
should a major component fail, such as one of
our bells, we’d be done for. They’re Grade I
listed and not available for recasting. So, like
a lot of other church bells, will simply be
brought down into the church as a museum
artefact and we’d have to find the money –
c.£25,000 – for a new replacement. They’re
mostly of the 17th Century, so that’s
reasonably understandable. What I’m not sure
about is the bell headstock. In our case these
large oak beams, some 6 inches by 10 inches
by 3 feet long are probably 19th Century, so
it’s arguable whether they are listed or not.
Since, however, a listing applies to the whole
‘curtilage,’ by default they probably are.
This is rather bad news, because recently on
one of our bells, the 3rd, a stay broke during a
Monday evening practice. It is probably one
of the oldest stays and was partially broken a
long while ago judging by the nature of the
new, complete break. As most of us are aware
it is a safety mechanism designed to avoid
greater damage if a bell is ‘over-pulled’, so it
may be, and I fervently hope is, considered to
be a ‘disposable’.
However, in order to effect a repair and
replace the old stay with a new one, three of
which we have in store, it was necessary to
make an adjustment from the way the old one
was attached to the headstock. This meant
drilling one new ½-inch diameter hole right
through the 6-inch thick oak beam headstock.
Having done this, a very neat and orderly
repair was easily completed and we are now
up to our full strength of six ringable bells
again for our normal services, Easter and
looming very busy wedding ‘season’.
It was only later then that the thoughts
about a ‘faculty’ and the 19th C oak headstock
began to enter the world of dreams and
percolate through to the consciousness.
They say confession is good for the soul, so
I guess I’ll probably see you in gaol if you’ll
be kind enough to visit me occasionally and
bring me a copy of The Ringing World.

Aldenham School ringers
SIR, – I was delighted to read in your most
recent issue about the project at St Chad’s
Lichfield to teach school pupils ringing. What
is even better is the philosophy behind it all is
to teach ringing to youngsters without any
prerequisites and to plant the seed for the
future. This shows tremendous foresight on
the part of the St Chad’s ringers who may not
even receive any direct benefits from this
venture, but the contribution to the Exercise of
giving 83 youngsters the experience of ringing
is far greater. Quite aptly, in the same issue
there is a letter about the ringers from Queen
Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Blackburn
March 22, 2013
demonstrating that teaching school pupils is
an investment for the future.
Readers might be interested to know that
Aldenham School has begun offering bell
ringing to pupils during one of two weekly
activity slots. Nine pupils signed up and have
made excellent progress since the start of
January. We have temporarily lost six
members of the team due to tennis fixtures
and the lower school production; such are the
hazards of working at a school with lots going
on! Happily, this has meant we are able to
focus on the remaining three who are now
ringing rounds.
Last Christmas, through the good offices of
Stephen Penney, we were fortunate enough to
ring at St Albans Abbey for the School carol
service. The band was made up of: Staff, a VI
Former who is a member of the band at
Harrow, an Old Aldenhamian and parents, one
of whom hadn’t rung for 30 years. We were
joined by some ringing friends who kindly
came to assist; this year I hope to include
pupils who have been taught at the school.
It has been fairly straight-forward to set up
bell ringing as an activity at Aldenham.
Firstly, there is an expectation that staff will
offer games or activities twice a week and it is
in the culture of an independent school for
activities such as horse riding, sailing and bell
ringing to take place. Secondly, there has been
a lot of support and encouragement from John
Beardwell, the Tower Captain at Radlett and
the Revd Andrew Stead, the School Chaplain.
John has made available the bells at Radlett
church and given his own free time to teach
pupils, Andrew has been supportive of the
idea right from its conception, driven the
minibus, supervised pupils and rung with us.
Our modus operandi is to use the “Bell Club”
scheme published by Sherbourne Teaching
aids. This serves our purposes well although
we have ditched the felt-tip pens in favour of
a signature from a member of staff. Their
website is down as mentioned by your
correspondent but once contact was made, Ted
Copson was very helpful. (copson@

In conclusion, the ringers at St Chad’s,
Lichfield have done exceptionally well by
gaining the trust and support of their local
school, they are correct by stating that the
Head Teacher, staff, governors and parents
need to give 110% support for a ringing
activity to succeed. It is common for many
schools to view outsiders with suspicion,
which makes setting up a ringing project
potentially very difficult and so I congratulate
anyone who is able to succeed with this
essential work.

Brannelled off
SIR, – Michael Orme (p.227) incorrectly
states that “on Sunday 7th April Brannell will
be broadcast on Bells on Sunday; there is no
such church as Brannel(l). St Stephen in
Brannel (sometimes hyphenated and known
locally as St Stephen) from where the
broadcast will come is so named since in
medieval times the parish lay within the royal
manor of Brannel.
On the same page Brian Harris tells us
about a beer festival due to take place in
Christ Church, Swindon. For some years the
ringers of Bodmin, Cornwall, have organised
a bells & ale festival which also takes place in
the church.

SIR, – Readers of a DIY persuasion, may be
interested to know, that the Firm of H. J. Pugh
& Co. Auctioneers (www.hjpugh.com) will
be selling the private collection of the
machinery and tools of the late Bill Berry of
Malvern on Saturday, 6th April at 10am at the
Ledbury Sale Rooms.
Their web site gives an outline of the sale
items but a full on-line catalogue will not be
available ’til the week of the sale. No details
of a viewing day are given as yet.
I have no connection with either company
but spotted the advert in my woodworking
magazine and thought it may be of interest to
some from either the aspect of available
specialist tools i.e. ‘steel bell wheel table,
forming rack’, or just from the historical
perspective.
I shall be committed to a fellow ringer’s
wedding on that day, so unable to attend,
but if a viewing day precedes it I will
attempt to attend.

More grave matters
Roger Bailey’s collection of
handbell compositions
SIR, – We are very pleased to see that Roger
Bailey’s extensive collection of handbell
compositions for the Compositions Committee
has been restored to the Change Ringing
resources website by Peter Blight.

The collection of handbell compositions so
far ranges from Triples to Maximus and
includes for example many compositions with
coursing pairs. Sadly Roger’s illness and other
projects kept him from updating the collection
from about 2004.
The original intention was to present these
compositions in a book, pdf or an official web
page, and it would be an excellent memorial to
Roger if this could be completed on his behalf.
We would therefore be very grateful if
composers could please submit their handbell
compositions to compositions@cccbr.org.uk
to enable us to complete Roger’s task.

SIR, – You may be interested in these
pictures of a headstone in memory of my
husband, Sam Ferris, who died in May 2011.
He rang at Quorn and Shepshed (Leics) and
St German’s Cathedral, Peel, Isle of Man,
and was instrumental in restoring the bells at
the latter. The stone is in the burial ground at
Litlington, Cambs, where he lived for the last
five years of his life, and was carved at the
Kindersley workshop in Cambridge.

Bell birds of a feather
SIR, – In reply to the letter from Mr Ellisdon
(p.253), I am not aware of a ‘5,000 Club’ for
tower grabbers but there is a private list
maintained and shared by those ringers known
to have counted 6000 towers. At present there
are 14 people on that list.

Williams at Canterbury
Seventeen members of the Canterbury
Cathedral Company took part in ringing for
the Enthronement of the Archbishop, Dr
Rowan Williams. It was a long, but very
exciting day. Some of our number had seen it
all before, having served the Company and the
Cathedral for many years. However, there was
a noticeable difference, even from our last
great event, the Queen’s visit last Maundy
Thursday security was much more in
evidence. We had all had to have photo
identification cards for the occasion and
airport scanners were used to check bags and
people. For those of us newer to the Company
it was all rather daunting, but nevertheless an
honour to be involved – and to get a seat in
the service. There were twelve of the precious
seats reserved for us. Those who remained in
the tower were able to follow events on a TV.
We began ringing at about 1.30, radio
coverage began at 2.15 and the television at
2.30. Our seats in the Cathedral gave us an
excellent view of the Archbishop at the nave
altar and of the wonderful Welsh harpist and
soprano. A nearby TV monitor enabled us to
follow the service when it moved into the
Quire. The moment when the Archbishop
knocked on the west door was very dramatic
– he could be seen outside on the monitor as
the three knocks echoed loudly throughout the
building. The applause for the Archbishop
both in the middle of the service and at the
end as he processed out of the Cathedral was
exceptionally warm. At the close of the
service a quarter peal of Grandsire Cinques
was rung and finally, some five hours after we
had arrived, we made our way out…
50 Years Ago
The Queen’s Visit to Christchurch
The visit of Her Majesty the Queen and
H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh to
Christchurch, New Zealand, was marked by
excellent ringing on the Cathedral bells. Mr.
G. Nelson Sloan, secretary of the Christchurch
Cathedral Society. writes:
On Saturday, February 16th, the Cathedral
bells were rung to welcome the royal visitors
to Christchurch at 1 p.m., and ringing
continued until 1.30 p.m.: Grandsire Triples
and rounds on the full ring of ten being rung.
Later an attempt at a peal of Grandsire Triples
on the ‘heavy eight’ was made, but failed, so
for the remainder of the afternoon Grandsire
Triples and Plain Bob Minor were rung.
Sunday, February 17th.—The royal visitors
attended divine service at the Cathedral at 11
a.rn. This was a State service and the sermon
was preached by the Archbishop of New
Zealand. the Most Rev. N. A. Lesser; the first
lesson was read by the Prime Minister of New
Zealand. Mr. Holyoake: the second lesson by
H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh.
This was an historic day tor the
Christchurch Cathedral Society of Bellringers
in that it was the first time that the bells had
been rung for a State service, with a reigning
sovereign attending. A picked band was
chosen to ring touches of Grandsire Triples
and rounds on the full ring of ten, and was
conducted by the Master. Mr. R. H. Idle. The
ringers rose to the occasion and excelled
themselves; in all the the years I have rung at
the Cathedral, I have not heard better striking,
it being almost perfect and was a treat to listen
to. The Society was congratulated on the high
standard of the ringing on the day and letters
of appreciation were received from the Dean
of Christchurch (the Very Rev. A. Pyatt) and
the Cathedral Chapter.

A History of Garston Parish
Church Tower, Bells and Ringers
Peter Furniss, 2012
St Michael, Garston
The sight of St. Michael’s Parish Church,
Garston, hemmed in by the Gasworks and the
old London and North Western Railway line,
makes an eloquent picture of the C of E
struggling for survival in an increasingly
secular world, its pinnacled Victorian tower
just about managing to maintain a presence
amidst the urban sprawl of this “lost village”.
The restored Warner octave is heavily used,
as any followers of Campanophile or
BellBoard will testify. Now, Peter Furniss’
newly-published History of the tower, bells
and ringers offers a timely and accessible
account of the origin of these bells. It
succeeds, where many bell histories fail, in
appealing to a relatively wide readership.
Thus, in addition to the specialist information
provided, there is a general introduction to
full-circle ringing and some explanations of
change-ringing terminology.
St. Michael’s is the third church to occupy
the same land, a fact borne out by the many
gravestones predating the current church.
Peter clearly outlines the 1937 research of
Rev John McIntosh Swift, the scholarly vicar
of Garston, who conjectured a fairly
ambitious, early Tudor building with a
regional-style west tower. It is down to the
indefatigable F.H. Cheetham that we know of
the addition in 1605, of a new bell “tunable
to the third bell” then at Garston. On this
evidence, Peter surmises that change-ringing
may have been practised at Garston at the
time. This is, perhaps, wishful thinking,
given the relative remoteness of the area and
the lack of any other evidence of changeringing in the region for another two

centuries. Cheetham was quoting from the
Norris Family Deeds, which would be worth
accessing at Liverpool University, in order to
review the primary sources.
As with many histories, it is the illustrations
which immediately capture our attention and
Peter has reproduced several fascinating
photographs. These include a rare photograph
of the second church which was a small,
classical structure, built in 1715 and which
shared the churchyard with the current
building from 1877 to 1888. Its single bell
was transferred to the new building and has an
interesting story of its own, which Peter
recounts in detail. We also see the present
church in 1890, the tower minus its familiar
clock, pinnacles and battlements, in readiness
for a spire which never materialised. My
favourite illustration is a wonderful
photograph of the band, taken some time in
the late nineteenth century, sporting a
bewildering array of hats, beards, canes and
ale tankards, and looking as if they are on
their way to Widecombe Fair rather than an
industrial suburb of Liverpool!
There are also two splendid illustrations of
bewhiskered first tower-captain, coachman
Samuel Gough (1822-1907). Peter explores
the link between Gough, who had possibly
been a ringer at Leintwardine in
Herefordshire, and his generous employer,
church benefactress and donor of the bells in
1878, Miss Mary Lightbody. One wonders
how many other rings of bells owe their
existence to the right pairing taking place at
the right time. Peter speculates that Gough
had been favourably influenced by the heavier
Warner eight which had been installed at
Tuebrook in 1870. One also wonders whether
Gough had any influence in 1882 at nearby
Halewood, where a similar-sized Warner
octave to Garston was installed and where he
rang the treble to the first peal a year later.
Peter has included evocative accounts of the
arrival of the bells by rail and the various
commemorative celebrations that took place to
honour both the occasion and the donor’s
generosity. Given that this history is
published by the Garston and District
Historical Society, it will be read by those
with a strong local interest. As such, useful
information is provided on the local tradesmen
who assisted Warners’ Mr. Quick in the
hanging of the bells.
This local theme is maintained throughout
the publication, which sketches out the various
incarnations of the band from 1878, through to
the early 1970s, including their many changeringing endeavours. There is much of interest
here, including an account of Revd F. E.
Robinson’s visit in 1905 and the first
appearance of women in the belfry in the
1950s. Brief mention is made of Hambledon
Mason, the tower captain whose untimely
death due to a cycling accident in 1972,
effectively silenced the bells for a decade.
The only notable omission is due, no
doubt, to the author’s modesty and this is his
own contribution to Garston ringing which is
at least as significant as that made by Samuel
Gough over a century ago. Over the past
three decades, Peter has patiently patched-up
the rapidly deteriorating bell fittings, taught
numerous individuals to ring and maintained
a dedicated parish band. From modest
beginnings and endless Plain Bob Doubles,
he has established a remarkable Sunday
Service Band capable of ringing Bristol
Surprise Major.
Peter’s text chronicles the amount of piecemeal repair work undertaken on the
installation throughout the twentieth-century
and includes an amusing description of the
not-infrequent occasions when the fourth
clapper would part company from the bell! In
those days, it was impossible to imagine that
a complete restoration would ever take place.
However, between 1993 and 1994, a
remarkable team effort on the part of the
local ringers, Eayre and Smith, the
Merseyside Bell Restoration Group and many
other local groups, including the Garston
Stevedores, saw the transformation of a
rather lumpy and unmusical octave into a
pleasant, easy-going ring. This is all
chronicled within the text, though, again,
Peter has not emphasised his pivotal role as
the driving force behind the project.
The book is presented in photo-copied,
spiral-bound format, so may not necessarily
delight collectors of antiquarian letterpress. At
only £3 a copy, however, there is a wealth of
clearly-presented detail within the body of the
text and its appendices to interest local readers
and anybody interested in the day-to-day
history and development of a typical changeringing tower over the past 135 years. I
heartily recommend an early purchase.

25 Years Ago
My kind of progress
On November 4th 1963 I rang my first
quarter peal, and on December 27th 1963 I
wrote in The Ringing World to express
thanks to Rougham ringers for trying to
teach me to ring.
Now 25 years on I have just rung my 100th
quarter peal. This may not seem very
noteworthy but for me, not a first class ringer,
it is an achievement. I am very happy teaching
others to handle ropes and many of my
learners have gone on to become tip-top
ringers. When I hear youngsters say they are
bored stiff it makes my blood boil. Why don’t
they go to churches and have a go?
There are many churches with bells, but no
ringers. I am now helping to teach ringers at
two churches in our area although not all
recruits stick at it of course.
Many congratulations to 1000 pealers or
more. As for me I am coming along “slowly”,
now in my 77th year.

Silent Stedman – 100 years on
SRCY ‘Not the Dinner Day’ 2013

On Saturday, 2nd February, the Society held its usual winter
fixture of ‘Not the Dinner Day’, where around fifty members took
part in peal attempts at London towers followed by a curry in the
evening.
There were six successful peals out of seven attempts: Bethnal
Green, Garlickythe, Pimlico, Rotherhithe, Stepney (St George in
the East) and Spitalfields, with an attempt at Shoreditch lost due to
illness.
Once again the event was an opportunity for many old and new
friends to get together for ringing and socialising and it comes as a
welcome fixture in our calendar coming at a time when the
Christmas festivities are but a memory and we’re all getting pretty
sick of the cold grey days. Thankfully the recent and pending snow
was not in a disruptive mood!
Just for a change, this year we tried a different venue, the Dil
Chad, near Liverpool Street. The capacious restaurant satisfied our
palates and our appetites, and also allowed us room to mill about at
the end without getting under other diners’ feet. Undaunted by the
ten o’clock curfew on serving alcohol, a substantial party continued
on until the final bell was called at the nearby Hamilton Hall.
Thanks to the Master, Shirley McGill, and Assistant Secretary,
Ian Mills, for organising the day, and to all those who participated in
a very enjoyable event.

The first silent and non-conducted peal of Stedman Cinques was rung on handbells on 21st
February 1903, by the pioneering Leicester band of John O Lancashire (composer) 1-2, George Cleal
3-4, Samuel Cotton 5-6, William Willson 7-8, John Buttery 9-10 and Alfred Millis 11-12. It was the
culmination of a seven-year project to ring Steman Triples, Caters and Cinques in hand “silent” and was
the first peal of Cinques by all the band except Willson. An entertaining article by Willson recording their
progress “up the Silent Ladder” appears in Bell News, Vol.21 (1903), pp.579-80.
Ten years and a day later, this extraordinary performance was repeated on tower bells by a band of
College Youths. The details of that peal (as reported in the RW) were:

This peal was rung upon strictly non-conducted principles and was
the first peal on twelve tower bells rung under these conditions.
Bell News (1st March 1913) eulogised as follows:
“The non-conducted peal of Stedman Cinques rung at St
Michael, Cornhill, on Saturday, February 22nd, will go down in
history as a performance at once unique and epoch marking …
those who constituted the band will live in the annals of the art for
all time as masters … Individually they represent the crème de la
crème of the Exercise – collectively they cannot be excelled; it is
extremely doubtful if they could be equalled … We congratulate all
concerned, and have no doubt that the whole fraternity of ringers
will feel the prouder for the feat, which, while it places the
performers on a higher plane, sets an example for others to follow.”
Undaunted by this challenge, a Society band led by John
Chilcott met at Cornhill on 23rd February 1963 to mark the 50th
anniversary with another silent peal of Stedman Cinques. On this
occasion the umpires were Edwin A Barnett (SRCY) and David E
Parsons (ASCY), who also composed the peal. The 9th ringer,
Dennis Randall, famously recounted his instruction to “make the
first bob and keep ringing until everyone is looking the same way”.
Another 50 years on, and St Michael’s is now blessed with a fine
new Taylor ring of 12. As the 100th anniversary approached, the
idea was hatched to mark the occasion with a silent peal by a band
of Past Masters of the Society, something which had not been done
before. From the small pool of available talent, a band was chosen,
a composition produced and the ringers briefed. Simon was warned
that Dennis’ instruction wouldn’t work this time (although his
reaction on seeing the band placing was “I get the gist”). Tony
Kench’s careful neighbour management ensured an early evening
start; apparently he told the next door resident that the performance
would be “like an orchestra, but with no conductor and no music”
(he’d obviously seen the composition). So, on the exact anniversary,
we met – without umpires this time – and rang a steady, incidentfree peal, before repairing to the Society’s spiritual home (the
Counting House) to celebrate with a pint or two.
My thanks to all the band for taking part and sticking to their
brief, and to Tony for making the arrangements. We’re looking
forward to reconvening for the next anniversary in 2063.

Dennis Leslie 1930 - 2013
There is so much to say about Den. The
hardest part of preparing this has been what to
leave out.
Den’s life began on 27th May 1930 when
identical twins arrived 15 minutes apart in
London’s East Ham. Norm says he knows that
Den was the older of the two because he was
already there when he arrived! There were
already four children in the family – George,
Ivy, Gladys and just a year before the twins –
Den remembered those early years with
affection. Apparently they were always
scrapping. Norm told us “sometimes I’d make
him cry and sometimes he would make me cry
– but very quickly we were pals again!”
They were of course inseparable and did
everything together. Den was the ‘masterful one’
and it stayed that way throughout their lives.
However Den would never make an important
decision without first consulting Norm.
And there were many escapades! When they
were seven years old they would cadge a
halfpenny each from their sister and buy two
platform tickets at Upton Park Station. Although
they had no tickets to travel, they would get on
a tube train and spend the rest of the day
travelling round and round the District and
Metropolitan Lines. Without proper tickets
they could not attempt to leave any of the
stations they visited. At the end of the day they
would time their return to Upton Park in the
rush hour and hide among the crowds of
commuters to get back through the barriers at
Upton Park and run home – sometimes pursued
by a cursing ticket barrier inspector.
By the time they were 9 years old war was
approaching. Everyone had been given gas
masks. These were with them all the time in a
little cardboard box, kept in a small knapsack
which also contained their pyjamas, a change
of clothes and a barley sugar. This was their
evacuation ‘going away kit’.
They had regular gas drills at school which
were not taken very seriously, especially when
they discovered that by blowing out hard
through the rubber they could make very rude
noises!! The children had all been warned
about evacuation and were told that they could
go at any time. One morning in September
1939 they went to school to be told “you won’t
be going home today”. So began a journey that
was to change their lives forever. Den and
Norm were marched to Upton Park Station.
They never had the chance to say goodbye to
their parents or the rest of the family.
They thought it was great fun – like going
on a holiday – and were singing. But it is
difficult to imagine how two 9-year-olds could
easily cope with the trauma of suddenly
leaving their home, family and friends for
unknown parts; but of course they had each
other and that special relationship that we all
witnessed as we got to know and love them
both over the years.
From Upton Park they went by train to
Reading and then Uffington where they were
de-trained and told to wait for the charabang that
would take them to their final destinations.
This then was their first real experience of the
countryside after 9 years living in ‘the smoke’ as
Den used to call it. On the grass outside the
station, they had managed to sit themselves on
top of a red ants nest. The ants took exception to
the invasion of their homes by 9-year-old
bottoms and went to work on them. Soon they
were hopping about in considerable discomfort
with a serious attack of ‘ants in the pants’
Eventually the charabang arrived and they began
the final part of their journey. Kids were dropped
off along the way and they eventually arrived at
the Village Hall in Hinton Waldrist to be greeted
by very welcome sandwiches and lemonade. A
farmer arrived in a Buick truck, which he
normally used to transport chickens. The boys
clambered into the back and soon they were
thoroughly infested with chicken fleas to add to
the ants in their pants.

So it was that the twins arrived in ‘The Row’
at Hinton Waldrist. Den and Norm were
assigned to number 10.
Butch Neil who lived at number 10 with his
wife Fanny (who was always to be referred to
as ‘the landlady’) opened the door. First
impressions are everything! Butch was a little
man with a large droopy moustache, braces and
a neckerchief tied round his neck and round the
braces. However most of all the twins noticed
his very large leather belt with brass knobs on.
Den said quietly: “Crike Norm, I wonder if he
ever uses it?”
They quickly settled in, met the local kids
and were soon playing in the woods.
It was not until three weeks later that they
again saw their Mum and Dad who travelled
down to Hinton to visit them. For as long as
their parents lived, they saw them at Christmas,
Easter and in the summer holidays.
Teachers had come from London with them
and they first attended a schoolroom set up in
Hinton for them. After about a year they went
to school in Longworth with the other evacuees
and local boys.
Most of us when we first met the twins found
it impossible to tell them apart. That was
certainly the case at school and as a result if
teachers were unsure which of them had
committed a misdemeanor, they caned them
both – just to be sure they got the right one! –
They were true brothers in arms!
Den and Norm both left school for good in
April 1945 when they were nearly 15.
Den went to work at Duxford farm working
at first with horses and then becoming a tractor
driver. Norm had gone to work at the local
market garden.
Den loved working on the farm, knew a lot
about cattle and horses and loved beating and
shooting – even owning his own shotgun. This
was a life a long way from the smoke and steam
of East Ham.
Den and Norm loved the countryside. They
fished at Duxford a lot. Den once told us that
there was a pike there so big that it had to go up
to Tower Bridge in London to turn round and so
old that it had false teeth and glasses. They
loved rabbiting with ferrets with Butch and on
the more cultural side of life went to dancing
lessons in the village hall – though as Norm
said ‘when you had been following a horse
behind a plough all day in hob-nailed boots not
many girls wanted to get very close to you!
In the early years they travelled on pushbikes
and used them to visit local hostelries. It was in
the Blue Boar at Longworth that they learned
their now famous repertoire of ‘Farmer’s Boy’
and ‘The Volunteer Organist’.
To help people tell who was who, the
‘landlady’ knitted them each V-neck sweaters
with an ‘N’ on one and a ‘D’ on the other. It was
no surprise that they would occasionally swap
sweaters just to confuse people.
When we first met them 49 years ago that
there was no way we could tell them apart. It
was a battle of wits trying to work out who was
who! On one occasion one of them arrived at
ringing with a buttonhole in his jacket. we
heard his brother call him Norm so at last we
had a means of identification so kept calling the
buttonholed twin “Norm”. They twigged and
when we weren’t looking swapped jackets.
Next time we called the one with the buttonhole
Norm he looked at us and said “I’m not Norm
I’m Den aren’t I Norm?”
How many times did we hear those words
“Aren’t I Norm or ‘Didn’t he Norm” or ‘Wasn’t
it Norm?’
Bell ringing has been at the centre of the
Twin’s lives as has been the church.
When they were 22 they were on their
allotment when the Church Warden arrived and
asked a chap on an adjoining plot if he was free
to ring at a wedding. That sounded interesting
to the twins so they volunteered to ring– never
having touched a bell rope before. They were
encouraged to turn up at Hinton church the
following Sunday to ‘have a go’. There was no
coaching or advice on how to handle a bell. So
they just pulled away. Norm didn’t know the
bell he chose was up and at once pulled off and
broke the stay. From that moment they were
self-taught.
In 1953 they joined the Oxford Diocesan Guild
of Church Bell Ringers at a branch meeting in
Buckland for two shillings and sixpence.
In 1954 they met Frank White at Magdalen
College tower in Oxford during a Guild
Festival. So began a wonderful relationship
that lasted for nearly 58 years. Frank watched
them ring and said to them: “you old boys
should come to Appleton and learn to ring
proper.” And that is what they did.
They also formed a close friendship with
Mick Edney who was 12 years younger than
them but whom they had known since he was
very small. Den taught him to ring and the three
of them travelled around in Mick’s motorbike
and sidecar. To Den’s annoyance Norm always
sat in the enclosed sidecar so that he could
smoke his rollups.
Den rang a total of 150 peals. His first was on
9th March 1959 at his beloved Hinton, which
both Norm and Mick Edney rang in. He rang
peals of Doubles to Cinques including 95 peals
of Caters (a reflection of his ringing at Appleton).
He rang 85 peals with Frank White, 84 with
Brian White and 74 with Norm. Two highlights
worth mentioning are the 16,559 of Grandsire

Caters on 10th February 1968 and the 10,241 of
Grandsire Caters on 11th December 1971; both
at Appleton.
Den rang his last peal at Faringdon on 6th
February 2002.
He also called 10 peals, all of Doubles, and
was a member of The Ancient Society of
College Youths for 52 years.
Den’s favourite towers were Hinton,
Faringdon and Appleton.
In more recent years he taught several people
to ring to ensure that his beloved Hinton bells
kept ringing.
Occasionally over the years the twins would
go ‘bell hanging’ with Frank and Brian.
Inevitably there were ‘incidents’ like the time
at Lewknor when at lunch time Den and Norm
decided to go to the pub for a couple of drinks
and a game of darts (No ‘Health & Safety’ in
those days). Frank was not keen to go so they
removed the ladder up to the ringing chamber
to keep strangers away from the potentially
dangerous working area. The lunch break at the
pub lasted rather longer than planned and
Frank, stuck at the top of the tower with no
ladder was forced to wait until they returned so
he could have his lunchtime sandwiches.
After nine years at Duxford Den left to join
the MOD at Steventon where he became a
fireman on the trains travelling between
Steventon and Didcot carrying military
equipment. When the Steventon depot closed,
Den moved to Didcot where he started to learn
to drive on a mate’s car in the compound.
Eventually Den passed his driving test and
bought a car. He then moved to the MOD depot
Bicester and became a wood machinist helping
to make wooden platforms used to carry
military equipment that was dropped from
aircraft into operational zones. Norm joined
him at Bicester in 1965.
Den left MOD Bicester aged 60 and then
worked with Brian White as a wood machinist
and bell hanger until he retired aged 65.
Thirty-seven years ago, when Norm married
Doreen we wondered how Den would react. Den
loved being a brother-in-law, loved Doreen
dearly and was genuinely pleased that Norm had
found such a wonderful girl. There were other
perks too – especially the Sunday lunches!
Den hated selfishness and would soon tell
you if he thought something was ‘out of order’
as he put it. He didn’t mince his words!
He was also a talented watercolour artist and
left some beautiful pieces of work.
We’ve remembered ringing at Hinton then to
the New Inn at Longworth to be thrashed at
darts! And the Plough on Saturday nights after
ringing practice at Appleton.
What made him special?
That gentle, warm nature. The twinkle in his
eye when he saw you. You felt that he really was
pleased to see you. He sometimes laughed so
much when telling one of his many jokes that
you had to wait patiently for the punch line!
He would do anything for anybody. He was
kind and thoughtful and a very loyal and loving
brother, brother-in-law and friend. He did so
much for Frank White. It is difficult to put into
words the kindness and support he showed to
Frank – especially when Frank became more
dependent. Den was always there for him and
was a constant and generous friend when Frank
began to fail. When Frank died we all noticed
the beginning of Den’s own decline.
We shall never forget his sayings – In that
Cockney/Berkshire accent – with hands clasped
together and leaning forward slightly he would
sometimes respond to lively debates with the
words: “It all brings night”.
We shall never forget the dramatic renditions
of ‘The Volunteer Organist’ and ‘Farmer’s Boy’
at the March 4th celebrations and the use of his
hands to accentuate the poignant moments in
each song – always turning to Norm at critical
points of the performance to ensure he was also
giving it everything.
We shall never forget those Bank holiday
weekends when we “went “Cathedralling” with
the Twinnos, John and Bill Hibbert and Frank.
We shall never forget Sunday evening after
church drinks and darts at the Dunn Cow, The
Red Lion and The Thatched Tavern where he
introduced us to Light and Bitter.
Then there was the invitation to Den to speak
at Appleton’s March 4th dinner and the
wonderful joke he told which meant he was
never asked again! (not repeatable here!)
Den had a very strong faith. It was
uncomplicated but very real and very deep. For
many years his life revolved around Hinton
Waldrist Church at which he regularly
worshipped. He always seemed to be cutting
the grass there in the summer. He was Tower
Captain, a churchwarden for many years, and a
member of the PCC and was ringing the bells
until not long before he died.
He loved his Chrysanthemums almost as
much as Doreen’s Sunday lunches.
In his last days he spent his time with Norm
and Doreen. They were happy days. At the end
of each of those days he said to Norm and
Doreen: “thank you for a lovely day.”
This life’s sun has set on one of the best
farmer’s boys ever but we celebrate the happy,
happy day he came our way to enrich all our
lives. Frank White is smiling because he has his
old friend back.
God bless you Den and ’til we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

100 Years Ago
Ringers’ Chapel at Lincoln.
Proposed Restoration.
At Lincoln Cathedral there is a ringers’
chapel. It is, perhaps, better known as St.
Hugh’s Chapel, and for many years has been
dismantled and uncared for. As long ago as the
year 1612 it was the home of “The Company
of Ringers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of
Lincoln,” and it is felt to be a reproach that it
should remain now in a dilapidated condition.
From time to time small sums have been set
apart by members of the Diocesan Guild to
form a fund. This now amounts to £18 3s. 8d.,
and it is hoped that it will become the nucleus
of a fund for the restoration of the chapel,
which, it is estimated, will cost upwards of
£300. The committee of the Northern Branch
of the Lincoln Guild are appealing to
all·ringers and to those interested in ringing
and archaeology for contributions to complete
the work. The treasurers of the fund are the
Dean of Lincoln, who is President of the
Guild, and Mr. F. F. Linley, Bank House,
Gainsborough, President of the Northern
Branch. Donations may be sent to the latter, or
to the District Secretary.
Odd Changes
As a result of the letter from Dr. A. H.
Nichols, which appeared in these columns,
we are pleased to learn that the district of
Boston, U.S.A., where there are now several
peals of bells in ringing order, is likely soon
to have a competent band of change ringers,
recruited from this country. If the Art
becomes firmly established in the States, as a
result of this, there will be a great deal to
thank Dr. Nichols for.

Peal Week 2013
LWASCR has a ‘Challenge Month’ every
February, encouraging members to do
something progressive or different. This is
the fourth year that I have organised a
week of peal ringing based on the Half
Term week. It involved 40 people and 10
attempts of which 8 were successful. The
two unlucky attempts were for first peals
and I am sure will be quickly rearranged
and scored. Congratulations to Tim Ward
who rang his first peal – Bob Major inside
at Cannock. The rest of the footnotes speak
for themselves but congratulations to all,
particularly those who pushed themselves
out of their comfort zone. Thanks also to all
the experts who provided structure and
support throughout the week and the
tower officials for the use of their bells.

I
n Oxford, we’re lucky to have many fine
and historic peals of bells, and many of
them have strong links to particular occasions.
The traditional May Morning celebrations
wouldn’t be complete without the tremendous
sound of Magdalen college’s ten bells, and
Great Tom, the bourdon bell of Christ Church,
is often heard on Royal occasions such as
visits from the Queen and the Royal Wedding
in 2011. To commemorate the four-hundredth
anniversary of Sir Thomas Bodley’s death,
however, the bells of Merton College were the
obvious choice – Bodley is interred in the
chapel, and, prior to founding his library in
1602, he was a Greek scholar and a fellow at
the college.
The Bodleian Library is one of the six legal
deposit libraries of the United Kingdom,
entitling it to a copy of every book published
in the UK, and is famous for requiring readers
to promise not to “kindle therein any fire or
flame” before they are admitted, a tradition
started by Bodley in order to help safeguard
the collections. The library is reference only,
and even Charles I was refused the loan of a
text in 1645, when Oxford housed the court of
the King during the English Civil War.
Ringing at Merton is always quite exciting,
and nerve racking! They’re the oldest complete
ring of eight bells in the country and they roar
fantastically over Christ Church Meadow, but
the novelty really comes from the fact that
they’re rung from open galleries around the
walls of the tower, with a mere balustrade and a
few railings standing between the ringers and
the 60 ft drop to the chapel floor below.
Fortunately, those in our band had a strong head
for heights, and we rang a splendid quarter peal
of Grandsire Triples, with over half of the band
being comprised of librarians: Michael Williams
(C), Michael O’Hagan, John Pusey and Hazel
Rothera work or have worked in libraries across
Oxford. The rest of the ropes were taken by
other Oxford Society ringers who claim to have
visited a library at least once!
This was an enjoyable tribute to the founder
of an outstanding scholarly and cultural
institution. The completion of the renovation
of the New Bodleian Library on Broad Street
in 2015 may provide another opportunity for
ringers to make our mark on Bodleian history.
The bells of Lincoln College were rung to a
peal to mark the opening of this building in
1946 – hopefully 2015 will see a repeat
performance!

Death
I am sorry to tell you that Betty Robbins died
yesterday, March 14th after 14 days in the lovely St
Giles Hospice at Whittington – 3 miles away from
here. The funeral is to be a Eucharist in the St John’s
Hospital Chapel at noon on Friday March 22nd. No
flowers please; any donations to be divided between
St Giles Hospice & Christian Aid. Thank you for

Tail Ends
If there’s one expression that typifies the
English it’s the reply to a greeting inquiring
about health or well-being: “Mustn’t
grumble.” Whenever I hear it, I usually
detect a English accent, usually from an older
person. It sounds so definite, like an
injunction: Thou must not grumble. Collins
English Dictionary defines grumble as “To
utter (complaints) in a nagging or
discontented way”. I don’t know about you,
but I find it extremely difficult to utter
complaints in a contented way: that would
sound like point-scoring in a self-satisfying
manner. I realize that there are people who
have made that a speciality. Some wealthy
English travellers abroad, for example,
especially when they complain to hotel staff
or confront a check-in clerk at an airport
when they haven’t automatically been
upgraded to Business Class or better. Snooty
traveller with fluty voice 1, clerk 0. Snooty
traveller won in extra time.
I don’t hear “Mustn’t grizzle” because,
again using Collins as my reference, although
it is chiefly Brit, it is (esp. of a child) “To
fret, whine, also to sulk or grumble”. But one
can grumble without sulking and also without
nagging. Which brings me to the chiefly Brit
description common in Australia: whingeing
Pom. Whinge: “To cry in a fretful way; to
complain”. I recall an incident in a Sydney
pub (on one of my extremely rare visits to
such an establishment) when a drunken man
was bewailing and bemoaning in a manner
often perfected by exiles far from home . A
fellow patron called him a whingeing Pom.
Whereupon the drunk roared “I’m not a Pom;
I’m a Scort.” A brawl ensued. So whingeing,
it seems, is an exclusively English trait,
whereas brawling encompasses all from the
British Isles.
Ask an Australian the question of health or
well-being and one can expect either a full
explanation of his woes, or “Can’t complain”.
That either suggests complaining is forbidden
probably under some archaic Suppression of
Dissent law enacted to raise the national

Aussie team spirit; or that, in The Lucky
Country, there is nothing about which to
complain. Another possible explanation is
that, unable to grumble, grizzle or whinge, the
ability to construct or express a complaint has
been lost.
Whining and moaning loses sympathy very
quickly. I once worked with a very nice lady
named Mona who suffered greatly from her
name. Who’d want to befriend a moaner? Yet
there is a desirable Sydney seaside suburb
Mona Vale which, presumably from its Latin
roots, means “Farewell (and good riddance)
you Moaner”, the name having originated
verbally in the Victorian age when Latin was
somewhat more familiar than today’s e.g. and
i.e. With bracing sea air, superb ocean views
and golden sandy beach on to which waves
crash with a delightful crunch, what could
there be to moan about in Mona Vale?
Except, perhaps, the absence of a
McDonald’s Family Restaurant.
Yes, I am aware that Mona was the former
name for Anglesey: I assume the earlier name
was changed because the sound reminded
visitors of a sombre Welsh Sunday and a P.R.
consultant suggested a new angle to relaunch the island as a desirable vacation
destination, see? The Druids didn’t know
what he was talking about – a problem with
P.R. consultants to this day – so they simply
wrote down and accepted what he had said.
And thus is history made. Just be thankful
it’s not called Anglelookyou.
“Mustn’t fret” could be misinterpreted.
Something lost? Such as a peal? Admitting to
fretting results in being prescribed an
anxiolytic drug or a sedative, upon which one
then might be accused of sulking. Persistent
fretting can lead to hair loss.
Perhaps it’s best to use a neutral “Fair to
middling” or an equally vague “So so”. Or
resort to an answer continually given by a
former hypochondriac neighbour and which
became a byword locally: “As well as can be
expected in the circumstances”. That comes in
useful when asked what the ringing was like:
it’s more diplomatic than overt criticism,
especially if oneself was in the band, and it
avoids any nagging tendency.
The weather’s miserable, the stockmarket
is plunging, electricity charges are skyrocketing, the future is bleak and I’m
coming down with the ’flu. But, all the
same, mustn’t grumble.

Thought for the week
It isn’t unknown for human relationships
in a remote rural village to be so strained
that the parties concerned cannot bear the
thought of worshipping under the same
roof as members of a church congregation.
Verbal fisticuffs in the churchyard after the
service would look bad after shaking hands
with the vicar, standing in the porch. Better
by far not to take part at all, it is thought,
despite the risk of the church closing
through the absence of worshippers.
Such behaviour sounds unbelievable,
yet something similar can creep into a
ringing chamber. It may lead to the
shrinking of a local band, with the
possibility of those remaining having less
ability to advance in skills, and in extreme
cases even the silencing of bells once
rung full circle. Instead, there would be
only the sound of a chimed bell, a poor
substitute compared to the vibrancy of
‘The Exercise’ in full swing.
Shortly our churches will be
transformed, exchanging their Lenten
austereness for the colour and floral
display of Eastertide. That will match the
festal feel of the message proclaimed from
the lectern and pulpit: the unfailing love,
and the forgiveness for sins committed,
that was shown by Jesus Christ to all who
were prepared to turn to him, healing their
hurts and opening the way for them to
participate fully in his risen life.
May that be true for each one of us as
we ring out our share of the message to the
world around us: ‘Jesus Christ is risen
today’. May we all examine our
relationships and wring out any false
unworthy attitudes that cling, to ensure,
instead, we have in us the experience of a
deeply-rooted love to be found in a Christcentred life, to be shared unsparingly with
one and all.

Here is a first for Canterbury Cathedral.
Due to very tight security measures for the
Enthronement on Thursday, 21st March,
ringers will have to remain in the ringing
room for four hours. We were astonished on
arrival for ringing this morning to see the
appearance of a luxury portapotty cubicle
outside the ringing room, organised by the
secretary, Sarah Smith – no doubt having
commandeered her husband Malcolm to
hump it up the stairs. Here it is being
modelled by Sarah McTiernan.

Winter League
Teams competing in the winter league ring
once a month from October to February
normally with two others. Points are awarded
for being placed first (3 points), second (2)
and third (1) for the test piece which consists
of rise, rounds & fall. The finals, this year
held at Antony, comprise two separate
knock-out competitions, one for teams in the
top half of the resulting league table (the
A-final) and one for teams in the bottom half
(the B-final).
St Neot-2 won the B-final and much to
everyone’s surprise the young Lanlivery-2
team pipped St Columb-1 by the smallest
possible margin, a quarter of a fault, for the
A-final trophy. There having been a tie at the
top of the league, in a ring-off for the points
cup St Columb-1 were victorious over the St
Wenn / Withiel team.

Well dressed Cullompton ringers
Below is a photo of members of the Cullompton team ‘showing off’
their new polo shirts which have been provided by Gregory
Distribution Ltd. Even our youngest member, Jasper (18 months), has
a T-shirt with the logo printed on the front, although he has not
taken to the ropes as yet.
One of our ringers, Sharon McCabe, works at the Cullompton
Depot of Gregory Distribution and asked if they would be willing to
help us obtain the polo shirts – not only did they pay for the shirts
but also put us in touch with the local supplier they use for all their
own uniforms.
Tower Captain, Richard Shere, said: “We are all delighted with the
new tops and look forward to wearing them when taking part in
future competitions and when we ring for weddings. We cannot
thank Gregory Distribution enough for sponsoring us in this way.”
