I
T’S A GOOD
thing we’ve abbreviated “Recreational Vehicle” to “RV.” You can’t
very well say “We’re going Recreational Vehicle-ing down the Oregon Coast
this week.” They’d yank your AAA and AARP cards.
RVing, on the other hand, is a legitimate verb. Old Noah Webster might disagree. But then RVs—at least as we know them today—weren’t around back in
Mr. Webster’s time. In any event, if there’s a single place where you’re going to
have a great time RVing, it’s Hwy 101 along the Oregon Coast.
Trust me. I was there during the Great Flood of 2006 and still had fun.
You may not have heard of the Great Flood of 2006, largely because most of it
took place inside my RV while I toured the coast looking for places to hike. The
Great Flood was caused not by the steady rainfall but by the fact that I hadn’t caulked
the roof of my RV since the Third Crusade. It may have been raining outside, but
inside it was high tide.
I pulled in to Fort Stevens State Park, off 101 west of Astoria, and sloshed
around C Loop in search of the perfect spot. It is much easier to find the perfect
spot in mid-January than it is in mid-summer when campers outnumber the combined populations of nearby Warrenton and Hammond. Still, Fort Stevens is worth
a visit any time of year, and the Oregon State Parks reservation system makes it
easy to find a campsite, even in summer. Simply call 800-452-5687 or visit
www.reserveamerica.com.
My concept of the perfect campsite changes as I become a seasoned RVer.
Years ago, shortly after the invention of the internal combustion engine, my idea
of a perfect campsite included a splendid sunset vista, birds twittering, quiet soliOREGON COAST 3 7 / 3

Lakeside
tude. Sunset vistas are out of the question today, since southeastern exposure is
essential for satellite TV reception. And
I can tell you from experience that birds,
especially the giant gulls of the Oregon
Coast, do little to enhance your camping
experience. Solitude, too, seems far less
important these days than being within
walking distance to the showers.
I splashed south on 101, swinging
through RV-friendly Seaside with its onand off-street parking (check the big lot
on 12th Street at the north end of the
Prom). Back on the road, you’ve got a
tough choice when you reach
Tillamook. I don’t mean between sharp
3 8 / 4 OREGON COAST
or mild cheddar either. I mean whether
to hang a right at the Three Capes
Scenic Loop or continue south on 101.
The highway leaves the ocean and traverses splendid green valley and forest;
the loop leads you out to the wild ocean
of Cape Lookout State Park. I suggest
you follow the loop to nice park campsites or nearby private RV parks around
Netarts—but only after you’ve loaded
up on Tillamook cheese and ice cream.
Cape Lookout offers campsites within
wave-crashing distance of the ocean. RV
parks close to Netarts provide access to
great sheltered saltwater paddling in the
bay. A trail from the state park camp-
ground leads to the Cape Lookout trailhead. I drove the 2 miles south on the
loop in my waterlogged vehicle to the
same trailhead, where the huge parking
area seemed especially suited to big rigs.
To stay along the Pacific, follow
Cape Lookout Road south from the trailhead and take Sand Lake Road to the
right at the T intersection. You’ll pass a
number of state and county parks with
access to the ocean, including Cape
Kiwanda and Bob Straub state parks.
It continued to rain as I headed
through Pacific City to rejoin 101 at the
head of Nestucca Bay. A small pond had
collected in the RV, just under the
dinette vent, so I stopped on a hill to
drain it out my back door. Two spawning
salmon attempted to leap from the Little
Nestucca River up the resultant waterfall.
I drove through Lincoln City well
south to my next campsite at Beverly
Beach State Park, which (this is not fiction) has a number of utility sites that
offer cable TV hookups. That’s roughing
it, eh? Beverly Beach also has one of the
finest sandy strands for walking on the
entire Central Coast. I pulled in to site C7
and once again squeegeed water off the
RV floor. It drained into Spencer Creek,
which gurgled quietly past my campsite
and immediately bloated to flood stage.
Beverly Beach is one of the largest
campgrounds in the state park system,
with 53 full-hookup and 75
electric/water sites, 127 tent sites, and
21 yurts. The RV sites in B Loop are
closest to the beach. Other loops follow
Spencer Creek upstream and a nature
trail gives them ocean access.
I dried out during an all-too-brief
clearing and headed south once again,
the sea never far from my curbside mirror
view. It is a little-known fact that Oregon
has more state-owned ocean waysides—
most engineered with RVs in mind—than
the states of Idaho, Montana, and
Nevada combined. Why, from Lincoln
City south on 101 to Florence, you’ve
your choice of more than two dozen pubRV C A M P I N G G U I D E 2 0 0 6 - 2 0 0 7

lic oceanfront picnic spots, some so close
the surf spray will cool you off.
Florence is a historic community
along the Siuslaw River with an artsy Old
Town. The town basically is separated
from the ocean by the river mouth and
the Oregon Dunes National Recreation
Area. I’m certain it is the only place in
the United States where they have to
plow the sand on a regular basis from the
parking strip at the back of the Fred
Meyer supermarket. A drift fence there is
supposed to keep the dunes on one side
and the shoppers on the other.
Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State
Park, south of Florence, makes an excellent spot to drop anchor while visiting
the town. Named for the woman who,
with Samuel Boardman, was most
responsible for all those picnic waysides,
the park yields camping in eight forested
loops next to the dunes. While I was
there during winter, off-roaders could
pilot their ATVs from campsites in Loop
H. That access is closed May 1 to
November 30, but you can get your offroad fix and all the dunes you can handle off South Jetty Road. The campsites
around F Loop looked to be on the quiet
side of the campground, although they
were closed for the winter.
Heading south again, I cruised
through Coos Bay in time to catch the
morning edition of the radio classifieds
on a local station (“Okay, folks, Tom
has a 20-inch Stihl for sale. Worked real
good when he cut that cedar down on
his garage . . .”). Hwy 101 climbs into
the green foothills along the coast and
you don’t see the ocean again until you
pass the dunes at Bullards Beach State
Park. I crossed the Coquille River and
drove another hour past Port Orford to
my last campsite at Humbug Mountain
State Park.
Dry Run Creek (which is anything
but dry in winter) joins Brush Creek at
the campground. You’ll find 32 sites
with electricity and water and 62 tent
sites. The campsites at Humbug are
available only on a first-come, firstserved basis. Beach access is at the west
end of C Loop, but the real attraction at
Humbug Mountain is the view from the
top of one of the coast’s highest headlands, 1756 feet above the Pacific.
The vista makes the very strenuous
climb worthwhile.
My last stop along the coast was Gold
Beach, some 20 miles to the south. The
wild Rogue River rolls into the ocean
here and you can grab a jet boat ride on
the river from your campground site. It
was raining and the wind was blowing so
hard that the drops—as big as water balloons—were “falling” horizontally.
That might sound awful to many of
you, but if you haven’t caulked your roof
since the Third Crusade, horizontal
beats vertical anytime. ■

ROCKAWAY BEACH
STORIA HAS PLENTY of sights to see, and it’s
been changing, expanding, and improving
in recent years.A good way for an RVer to see
Astoria is to park at the Columbia River
Maritime Museum on Marine Drive. Besides
being one of the town’s highlights, the museum
is near the eastern terminus of the Riverfront
Trolley, which runs for miles by some of the best
attractions and restaurants the city has to offer.
The museum won’t mind if you stay in its lots
during the day, although not overnight.
The road to the Astoria Column at the top
of Coxcomb Hill goes through residential
neighborhoods and is both steep and winding.
You will be rewarded, however, with an
unmatched view from the top of the column.
RV parking is available.
Fort Clatsop has great summertime programs. Take a bus from the transit center on the
waterfront or park at the Astoria Visitor Center
eight blocks west and take the shuttle to the fort.
If you’re camping at Fort Stevens State Park
or the KOA across the road, shuttles and buses
at the nearby information center will take you

around town.
Seaside considers itself to be the coast’s
original resort town and it works hard to maintain its reputation. Events are scheduled almost
every weekend throughout the year. The Seaside
Visitor Center on Hwy 101 provides parking for
RVs on the north side of the restrooms. Onstreet parallel parking is available on Necanicum
Drive between 1st and 12th. Cross the
Necanicum River at either 1st or 4th and turn
right (parking is on the east, or northbound, side
of the street). Parking also is available while you
shop at the Seaside Factory Outlet Center.
The central district of Cannon Beach is
packed with visitors most of the year. You probably couldn’t park an RV here and shouldn’t try.
Parking is available behind the Cannon Beach
Visitor Center, which was built to display the
works of local artists and artisans and is worth
visiting for its own sake. Limited RV parking is
available at Gower and Hemlock in Tolovana
Beach, just south of Cannon Beach, from which
you can walk to the shore and view the famous
Haystack Rock.

Between Cannon Beach and Manzanita,
Hwy 101 passes through Oswald West State
Park. The highway climbs steeply to reach a
summit from which miles of coast can be seen.
The viewpoint near the summit of Neahkahnie
Mountain can handle even large RVs. At the
foot of the mountain, Manzanita is an attractive
community that has little RV parking. Plan to
park along the waterfront in Neahkahnie Beach
and take a short hike to town. A bit farther
south, close to Nehalem, some stretches of Hwy
101 have 9 percent grades and should be
approached cautiously.

STEAM ENGINE PULLS an excursion train,
the Oregon Coast Explorer, between
Rockaway Beach and Garibaldi on weekends
during the summer. RV parking is easiest at
the Rockaway Beach end of the line, where
parking is available near the depot. Details on
times and fares can be obtained from the Port
of Tillamook Bay’s Web site, www.potb.org.
Tillamook County is noted for its dairy
production, so it’s hardly surprising that
Tillamook is home to two cheese factories that
welcome visitors. Both have ample RV parking. The largest and best known is the
Tillamook Cheese Factory, operated by the
Tillamook County Creamery Association. It is
easily recognizable by the replica of the
TO
NESKOWIN
Morning Star, an 1854 sailing ship built by
Tillamook County pioneers.You can watch
cheese being produced on a self-guided tour,
and afterwards indulge in delicious cheese
and ice cream. The Tillamook Chamber of
Commerce provides information from its visitor center on the south edge of the parking lot.
The other cheese factory is the Blue Heron
French Cheese and Wine Company, just one
mile farther south on the same side of the road.
You can sample and buy domestic and imported cheeses, including Blue Heron brie and
camembert, and taste Oregon wines.A small
petting farm entertains children of all ages.

well marked parking for RVs is provided. The
museum is housed in a World War II blimp
hangar, which is the largest wooden clear-span
structure in the world.
You have two choices for getting from
Tillamook to Lincoln City. One is to follow
Hwy 101 south, which is the fastest and most
direct. On this leg is Munson Creek Falls, the
highest waterfalls on the Oregon Coast, and
Bear Creek Artichokes. The falls can be
reached by a short hike after a 1-1/2-mile
drive from Hwy 101 at about MP 73. The road
is narrow and there is no turnaround, so you
would want to use your tow vehicle.
The alternative is the Three Capes Scenic
Loop. It hugs the coastline of western
Tillamook County, passing three capes
(Meares, Lookout, and Kiwanda) if taken to the
maximum. The road is not designed for speed
but is fully adequate for an RV.You begin by
driving west from downtown Tillamook and
taking either Bayocean Road for the full tour or
Netarts Highway for a shorter ride.

one of the coast’s landmarks, can be seen up
close. You may be surprised by how short it is
at 38 feet tall. The Bayocean Spit extends
almost across Tillamook Bay. It’s fun to
explore on foot. The small community of
Oceanside is south of the park, easy to walk
around after parking your rig. Three Arch
Rocks National Wildlife Refuge is offshore.
South of Oceanside is Netarts, close to the
road that most directly connects the loop with
Tillamook. Netarts is on a bay, formed by
Netarts Spit. The only state park campground
on the loop is at Cape Lookout to the south.
The park incorporates the entire spit within its
2000 acres and presents several opportunities
for long hikes.
Four campgrounds are located at Sand
Lake, three operated by the U.S. Forest Service
and one by Tillamook County. The “lake” is
actually an extremely shallow, sandy inlet of
the Pacific, so flat that you can watch the
incoming tide cross the sand.
Cape Kiwanda is close to Pacific City and
is noted as the place where dorymen launch
their unique boats directly into the surf. The
large parking lot is part of a Tillamook County
Park, with the cape itself incorporated into a
state natural area. No parking spots are designated for RVs. In addition to the long-established RV park, new places with lodging, food,
drink, and services have sprung up nearby.
The Three Capes Loop reconnects with
Hwy 101 south of Pacific City. Farther south is
Neskowin. You can get off the highway and
park, but the residents do not want you driving or parking your RV anywhere in the network of small streets.
Newport
NESKOWIN
H
TO
WY 101 GOES up and over Cascade Head
to reach Lincoln City. It’s a fairly steep
climb but the road is excellent. To take a slower, more scenic route, turn onto Neskowin
Valley Road which meanders for several miles
before reaching Hwy 18 at Otis, about a mile
east of Hwy 101.
Several places in Lincoln City offer good
RV parking, but none directly on the ocean.
Chinook Winds Casino has plenty of designated RV parking, as does Tanger Factory Outlets.
Devils Lake State Park is divided into East and
West sections: The East section is a day-use
area, great for boating and picnics; the West
section is a well-developed campground that
can accommodate most average-sized RVs.
The “D” River is the shortest river in the
world according to Guinness Book of World
Records. The “D” River Wayside is extremely
popular and the beach in front of it is a mecca
for kite flyers. Parking does not include any
designated spaces for RVs, but you can park at
West Devils Lake State Park and walk just a
few hundred yards to reach the beach.
In contrast, Gleneden State Park, in
Gleneden Beach south of Lincoln City, appears
to have been built with RVs in mind. The
NEWPORT
parking lot is wide with designated RV parking on both the south and north sides. The
beach is close and uncrowded. Fogarty Creek
State Park a couple miles farther south is better developed, more popular, and almost as
convenient.
The famous spouting horns of Depoe Bay,
which funnel incoming waves through openings in the basalt rocks, are worth stopping to
see. The city’s business district lines Hwy 101
on the opposite side. It’s possible to park an
RV facing the ocean in the middle of town if
you’re driving south and luck is running with
you, but getting out will require backing into
traffic. A better alternative is to parallel park
along Hwy 101 a couple hundred yards farther
north. Signs direct you to public parking, but
it’s not well suited for RVs.
Good picnicking and wave watching are
features of Rocky Creek State Wayside a couple
miles south. Accessibility for RVs is excellent.
Devils Punchbowl is the best known landmark
at the tiny community of Otter Rock on the
south side of Cape Foulweather, but RV parking is non-existent. Nearby Beverly Beach
State Park has a full campground and easy
access to the beach by an underpass.

HE FIRST YAQUINA lighthouse was built on
Yaquina Bay in 1871, but it didn’t take
long to realize that the location was wrong.
Another lighthouse was built at Yaquina Head
in 1873 and remains in operation today.
Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area
around the lighthouse has some RV parking,
but the best option is the interpretive center’s
pull-through spots.
The original Yaquina Bay lighthouse is
now a museum. RV parking is not identified
but you can park along the road at the outskirts of the park. Do not attempt to use the
lot directly in front of the lighthouse.
Bay Boulevard runs through the heart of
Newport’s waterfront district, also known as
the Bayfront. It is a crowded street with no
RV parking.
The best access to the beach at Newport is
Agate Beach Wayside. Its large parking lot has
pull-through spaces and the crowds are small.
It’s close enough for a long walk or a short
bike ride to Nye Beach, Newport’s second center of visitor activity. The Nye Beach district
has nothing suitable for RV parking.
South Beach is across Yaquina Bay from
REEDSPORT
Newport. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is here
along with Hatfield Marine Science Center.
The aquarium is emphatic that RVs should
park in the designated lot across the road
from the main parking area.
Hatfield has no designated RV parking,
but a large lot with ample RV parking is across
the street.
The largest state park campground on the
Central Coast is at South Beach. It has ample RV
parking, but otherwise there is little to recommend the setting.Ona Beach is a delightful dayuse park a mile north of Seal Rock with good RV
parking at the far end of its parking lot.Avoid Lost
Creek; for anything larger than a passenger car.
Beachside State Park is a popular place
among campers. One of the north-facing
campsites has been described as the single
most-coveted camping spot in the entire state
parks system. Reservations are essential.
Visitor information, as well as the history
of Alsea Bay bridges, can be found at the Alsea
Bay Interpretive Center at the south end of the
bridge in Waldport. RVs should park before
reaching the turnaround. There’s no RV parking at all at the Yachats Chamber office, which
is in a small shopping center.

“The Heart of
the Oregon Coast”™
–Lincoln County –
At Cape Perpetua, the highlight is definitely high. The summit provides sweeping views
down the coast from a stone shelter built during the Depression. The road up is in good
condition, although it narrows at one point
and is marked One Way for Trucks and Buses.
This only applies for about 50 yards. Parking
at the top is okay for small RVs, but larger rigs
should use the grassy spot on the north side of
the road just before the summit turnaround.
The campground at Cape Perpetua, like
the one at Rocky Creek a few miles south, is a
typical Forest Service campground. Small RVs
are mixed with tents at sites that provide water
but no full hookups.
At Cape Perpetua, the two best opportunities to watch waves crashing against rocks are
Devils Churn and Cooks Chasm. Cooks Chasm
is the easiest to reach. The highway is almost
at sea level, so you simply pull off the road and
you’re there. Devils Churn is more spectacular
but farther from the road. Park your large RV
parallel to the highway in front of the kiosk.
A smaller rig can be parked closer in the
second-level parking lot.
A few miles down the coast stands the
most photographed landmark on the Oregon
Coast: Heceta Head Lighthouse. You can drive
down to the parking lot at Devils Elbow Beach
and walk to the lighthouse for a closeup view.
Any RV larger than a camper should use the
space under the Cape Creek Bridge for parking. Great views of the lighthouse and lightkeeper’s house can be enjoyed from the
turnouts near Sea Lion Caves.
At Sea Lion Caves, the main cave is far
below the level of the highway. The building
you see from the highway is like the tip of an
iceberg. The small parking lot in front is
unsuitable for RVs; designated RV parking is
across the highway.
In the Florence area, the best and closest
approach to the ocean for an RV is the North
Jetty. Turn at Heceta Beach and after a couple
miles turn left on Rhododendron Drive. After
a couple miles, look for North Jetty Road. The
parking lot is rough but there’s plenty of room.
The beach is broad and covered with driftwood for a beach fire, which is not the case at
the South Jetty.

Old Town Florence is a good place to walk,
but not to drive, let alone park, an RV. The Port
of Siuslaw has provided parking with some RV
spaces on the upriver end of Old Town.
South of the Siuslaw River Bridge is the
once-thriving community of Glenada. Before
the bridge was built, the south terminal for the
Siuslaw River ferry was at Glenada, but the
former riverside business district has long
since vanished. In its place is a stretch of Hwy
101 known simply as “South of Florence.” You
can find an RV resort here to spend a night
and you can also use the South Jetty access
road to reach open sand for ATV adventure. In
fact, South Jetty Road accesses the northernmost extent of the Oregon Dunes National
Recreation Area.
Three places of interest to RV visitors can
be found “South of Florence,” but only one has
convenient RV parking. Sandland Adventures
is an amusement park with bumper cars, a
mini-putt course, go carts, and other attractions. Its parking lot easily accommodates RVs.
Avalon Park, a little farther south, is a nice
par 3, 9-hole course with a clubhouse attractively decorated with items from around the
world. Its parking lot can handle an RV, but on
a busy day, it might be hard to maneuver.
Two miles south of the Siuslaw River is
Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park.
Honeyman is divided by Hwy 101. The campground and day-use area on Cleawox Lake are
on the west side; another day-use area with
access to Woahink Lake is on the east side.
Many people will tell you of childhood
memories of camping at Honeyman next to
the dunes. The campground is no less appealing today. Maximum site length is 60 feet with
47 sites offering full hookup, but there’s only
one pull-through site.
An old stone lodge is still the focal point
of the Cleawox Lake day-use area. In addition
to snacks and souvenirs at the lodge, paddleboats can be rented for use on the lake and
picnic tables are available. RV parking is along
the west side of the road just before the lodge.
Honeyman’s Woahink Lake is reached by
Canary Road, which joins Hwy 101 directly
opposite the entrance to the westside facilities.
You’ll reach the entrance after crossing two
bridges over small arms of the lake. There are
two parking lots: The one closest to the picnic
facilities is for passenger vehicles, but normally you’ll have no trouble finding space. For big
rigs, consider using the parking lot next to the
boat ramp. Although designated for vehicles
with boat trailers, it works well for RVs too.
A little farther south is Sand Dunes
Frontier, the original and largest dune buggy
operation in Florence. It has a small section
for self-contained RVs but charges $5 a day.
When that area is filled, Sand Dunes promises
to locate another place for you to park your rig
while exploring the dunes.
Along Hwy 101 between Sand Dunes
Frontier and the town of Gardiner, a variety of
Oregon Dunes NRA locations can be found.
With the exception of the Dunes Overlook,
most of these are friendly to small RVs.
Carter Lake Campground is rustic and has
sites right on the lake. The road through the
campground is narrow and not suitable for
anything larger than a camper. Just a few feet
from the highways is the parking lot for a hiking trail, but it should be avoided. No RV
spaces of any sort are provided.
The Oregon Dunes Overlook near milepost
200 provides panoramic views of the dunes. For
big rigs, this is the best place from which to
explore the dunes.Access to Hwy 101 is easy, and
there are five designated pull-through parking
spaces just past the lookout on the circular drive.
After South of Florence, there are no passing lanes for about 15 miles, so if you are
delaying traffic, you are required to use the
slow traffic lanes. There are three of these
within about a mile of the Dunes Overlook
going south and one going north.
Tahkenitch Creek trailhead has limited
parking, but three spots are long pull-throughs.
The creek flows into Tahkenitch Lake, which is
famous for fishing. Tahkenitch Landing is dayuse and has a campground, but it is suitable
only for tenting or campers. The closest camping is a half-mile south in Tahkenitch
Campground and could accommodate a medium-sized RV. The adjacent day-use parking lot
has two long pull-through spots.

REEDSPORT
R
EEDSPORT IS THE heart of
the Lower
Umpqua recreation area as well as headquarters for the Oregon Dunes NRA. The
Dunes headquarters building is at the stoplight where Hwy 101 meets Hwy 38. It has
ample RV parking and a dump station operated by the City of Reedsport at the rear of the
parking lot. A $3 charge applies.
For anyone wishing a wildlife viewing
opportunity with a very high probability of success, the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area is a must
see. Six miles upriver from Reedsport on Hwy
38, you’ll usually see a herd of elk getting a
square meal on one side of a meadow, with a line
of human beings watching them intently from
the other side. Parking is convenient for RVs.
The Discovery Center on the Umpqua
River near downtown has parking for passenger vehicles only. RVs can park at Rainbow
Park across the street, providing an opportunity to see a historic Smith and Watson

PORT ORFORD
Convertible Yarder that’s on display there.
Winchester Bay seems almost made for
RVs. In fact, it was made for vehicles pulling
boats, which have many of the same requirements. Shops and restaurants crowd the
inland side of the marina, with parking for
RVs only a few feet away.
Both Douglas County and Salmon Harbor
provide RV campgrounds. The county campgrounds are called Windy Cove A and B and
are for self-contained rigs. The Marina RV
Resort provides full hookups in a nicely landscaped environment with sites ranging from
“small interior” to “super.” An overflow lot is
provided for self-contained only. The public
dump station is located at the end of the middle spit, next to Ork Rock County Park.
The Umpqua River Lighthouse is situated
on a bluff south of Winchester Bay near the
Coast Guard station. There is also a museum,
which was the original Coast Guard Station.
Although there is no designated RV parking,
it’s possible to pull even a long rig into a spot
across the road from the lighthouse. In fact, for
an RV this is a better place to get a view of the
river and ocean than the overview just a little
farther south. This loop drive from Winchester
Bay connects with Hwy 101 a few miles south
of Winchester Bay. Although the road is somewhat winding, parking is better and you get
the lighthouse and museum to boot.
The small city of Lakeside was once the
playground of the rich and famous, who were
drawn to Tenmile Lakes in the period before
World War II. The same appeal remains,
although the visitors are now mostly ordinary
folks. Many of them bring their RVs and stay
in one of the local resorts on the lakes. For
those who want to visit just for the day, to see
the shops and restaurants in town, plan on
parking in Tenmile Lakes County Park, a few
hundred yards east of the city center. McKays

Myrtlewood is an Oregon tree whose
wood can be rendered into many beautiful
products. The Real Oregon Gift is a myrtlewood factory and retail store just off Hwy 101
in Hauser, between Lakeside and North Bend.
Their large parking lot is convenient for RVs.
Another RV-friendly place to shop for myrtlewood is the Oregon Connection, formerly the
House of Myrtlewood, just off Hwy 101 south
of downtown Coos Bay.
Both the North Bend Visitor Center and
the Coos County Historical Museum are located in Simpson Park, at the south end of the
McCullough Bridge over Coos Bay. RV parking
is provided behind the visitor center. Use the
entrance on the south side of the building.
One of the area’s favorite places for breakfast and lunch is the Pancake Mill on Hwy 101,
just where North Bend blends into the city of
Coos Bay. Take the south (NOT the north)
entrance and park your RV straight ahead.
Downtown Coos Bay has been undergoing
a revival in recent years. The best art museum
on the coast can be found here, along with
restaurants, antique shops, and a historic theater. The waterfront has been enhanced by the
addition of a boardwalk. This is where Hwy
101 splits into a northbound road along the
waterfront and another southbound a block to
the west. The Coos Bay Chamber of Commerce
provides a visitor information center that is
accessible from both directions. At the north
end of its parking lot, several spaces are
reserved for RVs.You’re welcome to stay here

while you enjoy downtown. On-street parking
can be found, particularly along the northbound section of Hwy 101, but time limits
range from an hour to 90 minutes.
To reach the fishing village of Charleston
from downtown Coos Bay, follow the signs
that lead you along Ocean Boulevard, where
the Prefontaine Memorial 10K is run each
September. Near the summit you’ll see a huge
number of RVs on the south side. This is Gib’s
RV, the largest dealer on the South Coast—
your best bet if your rig needs service.
Charleston is dominated by its marina. It’s
easy to park your RV, either for a brief stroll
through the restaurants and shops, or to take a
charter fishing cruise onto the Pacific.
Although there is parking between the shops
and the waterfront, it’s easier for an RV to use
the more spacious lot on the inland side. The
marina area also incorporates an RV resort,
operated by the port.
The Cape Arago Highway extends south
from Charleston to one county and three state
parks. The county park is Bastendorff, the
jewel of the Coos County parks system. A
campground suitable for all sizes of RVs is
provided, along with ample RV parking in the
day-use area.
The three state parks are Sunset, Shore
Acres, and Cape Arago. The first is Sunset,
which has both a full campground and a
beautiful day-use area on a protected cove.
Farther along the highway is Shore Acres, on
the site of the former estate of Louis Simpson,
the founder of North Bend. His mansion is
long gone, but from where it stood, you can
watch the waves pounding the rocks in one of
the Oregon Coast’s most recognizable scenes.
The botanical garden is a riot of color much of
the year and hosts a fantastic display of lights
during the Christmas season.
Parking at Shore Acres is easy but you have
to be patient. A large grassy infield is encircled
by a drive. RV parking is more than three quarters of the way around it. The best bet is the
overflow lot when it’s open. Otherwise, there is
plenty of space on the left shoulder.
The final destination is Cape Arago, from
which you can view amazing concentrations of
seabirds that descend on the rocks offshore.

OREGON COAST 5 3 / 1 9
Parking is ample and the entire drive turns
around to come back, so manuevering is a
breeze. Oregon State Parks have constructed
an additional overlook between Shore Acres
and Cape Arago, but it has nothing that can’t
be seen more easily at Cape Arago.
Seven Devils Road connects Cape Arago
Highway near Charleston with Hwy 101.At
about the midway point you’ll find the headquarters of the South Slouth Estuarine Reserve.
The interpretive center here has fascinating
information about this unique environment,
but RV parking consists of a single grassy spot
across the road from the regular parking lot.
Fortunately, crowds are usually light so even if
someone else has the designated spot, you
should be able to ad lib something.
Bullards Beach State Park, just north of
Bandon, features the Coquille River
Lighthouse in addition to a full campground
with dump station. The lighthouse is on a
short loop past the last parking lot. Do not
attempt to drive it. It’s narrow and no RV
parking is provided.
Bandon’s Old Town is the heart of its
tourist appeal. Facing onto the harbor, the district has streets that are too narrow to handle
RV parking. Fortunately, the city has leased a
vacant lot just south of Old Town that serves
this purpose. Although it’s just marked “public
parking,” it is most useful for RVs.
Bandon Loop Drive parallels a long sandy
beach facing the ocean. At the north end is
Coquille Point, with a limited parking lot that
would be difficult for anything larger than a
camper. Bandon State Park at the south end is
a better bet. Of the three parking lots giving
access to the ocean, the two outer lots are
most accessible for RVs.
West Coast Game Park markets itself as
the world’s largest petting zoo. Thousands of
visitors spend time in close contact with its
collection of exotic and not-so-exotic animals.
Turn your RV left when you enter the parking
lot. The lot widens gradually as it gets farther
from the office, so the larger your rig, the farther along you’ll want to go.

to reach it requires driving a narrow twisting

Port Orford’s harbor is the only one in the

water by crane rather than moored. With
parking designed for boats on trailers, it’s not

Close by is a scenic drive well suited for
RVs. It’s the Newton B Drury Scenic Parkway,
which until recently was Highway 101 itself.
Now it’s a sidelight to the new highway, but the
road is still in great shape and poses no problems for RVs. A visitor center is located at the
south end where the old and new highways
join. You have a good chance of seeing elk as
well as some huge redwoods, and during the
peak viewing seasons there’s a good chance of
spotting a migrating whale.
Along the Drury Parkway is Prairie Creek
Redwoods State Park. The Elk Prairie campground in this park can accommodate RVs up
to 27 feet and trailers to 24 feet in a secondgrowth stand of redwoods. Showers and a
dump station are provided. Smaller rigs can
camp on the beach at Gold Bluffs Beach
Campground. RVs can be no longer than 24
feet long and 8 feet wide, and camping is
strictly first come, first served.
It’s no problem bringing your RV to one of
Del Norte County’s two casinos. Easiest access
is to the Lucky 7 Casino in Smith River. Pull
right off Highway 101 into a spacious parking
lot, where you can stay while you enjoy the
casino. Overnight parking is permitted, but
no hookups are provided. The Elk Valley
Casino is a little farther off the road, but when
you get there you’ll have no problem parking
or turning your rig around. You’re welcome to
stay as long as you’re at the casino, with no
specific time limit. ■

Across the border in California, the giant
redwoods are still more common. One of the
largest is located in Stout Grove on the south side
of the Smith River.Although the winding former
stagecoach road that leads to it is not suitable for
RVs, you can reach the grove from Jedediah
Smith State Park on the north bank by means
of the “summer footbridge” only in summer.
Even if you can’t reach Stout Grove in your
RV, you can still camp in the old growth redwoods at Jedediah Smith Campground, which
is located along Highway 199 in the park. The
size restrictions are 36 feet for RVs and 31 feet
for trailers.
Many visitors consider the Trees of
Mystery in the town of Klamath to be one of
the high points of a trip to Redwood Country.
RVers will be pleased with the vast open parking lot. RV parking is best at one of the two
ends of the lot and rigs of almost any size can
be accommodated.
