The last time these two teams met on the field, the Tornados defense took control of the game behind Prince Simunyu and Michael Gist as Brevard broke up eight passes, forced three fumbles and had two interceptions, with Gist sealing the Tornados 35-28 victory with an interception in the end zone as Brevard ended the 2011 season with a victory. Both teams come into today’s contest with matching 1-1 records, with Brevard entering the contest with a loss to FCS opponent Gardner-Webb in the season opener, before rallying to defeat Johnson C. Smith University in overtime last weekend in Brevard Memorial Stadium behind Austin Clark’s 18 yard field goal winner. Mars Hill also comes in with a loss to an FCS opponent, when they fell this past weekend to Western Carolina University 52-31, but offset the loss with a 27-7 victory over Charleston (W. Va.) in the season opener. Kickoff for the 2011 Brevard College Fooball SAC Home Opener is set for 2 p.m. at Brevard Memorial Stadium in Brevard, N.C. Brevard rode victories in their first five games last season, finishing 7-4, while recording wins against SAC opponents Lenoir-Rhyne, Tusculum and Catawba. The team completed one of the greatest turnarounds in the nation, recognized as the 11th best turnaround by Somis Sports in Division II in 2009. The Tornados made the full transition into the SAC in the 2008 season, finishing with a 1-9 record, which did not reflect the heart and determination the team showed as they made strides to competing in one of the toughest conferences in all Division II. In his first year at Brevard, Coach Hamilton made huge strides in constructing the Brevard College Football program from the ground up. In only their second year of existence, the Tornados finished 2-9 on the year, playing a full South Atlantic Conference slate along the way. The Tornados improved on a regular basis throughout the season, as BC scored in every contest, a huge upgrade from the 2006 season in which the Tornados were shut out four times. Coach Hamilton’s squad, which only had a month of preparation under the head coach prior to the start of the season, scored wins over both Chowan University and LaGrange College both of which were home contests. In 2007, the Tornados improved in every statistical Hamilton’s Career Record as Head Coach category as they competed as provisional members of both the NCAA Year School Record Conf. Record Division II level and of the very strong South Atlantic Conference which 1997 East Tennessee State 7-4 (5-3 SoCon) had four different teams ranked throughout the season. 1998 East Tennessee State 4-7 (3-5 SoCon) 1999 East Tennessee State 6-5 (4-4 SoCon) 2000 East Tennessee State 6-5 (4-4 SoCon) Hamilton began his collegiate football coaching career at the Citadel 2001 East Tennessee State 6-5 (4-4 SoCon) in 1981 where he coached the receivers. He then moved on to East 2002 East Tennessee State 4-8 (2-6 SoCon) Tennessee State University where he coached the receivers in 1983 2003 East Tennessee State 5-7 (2-6 SoCon) before coaching the quarterbacks in 1984-1985 and 1986-1987. 2004 Elon 3-8 (2-5 SoCon) Hamilton coached the quarterbacks and served as the offensive 2005 Elon 3-8 (0-7 SoCon) coordinator at Wofford College in 1988-1989. 2007 Brevard 2-9 (0-0 SAC) 2008 Brevard 1-9 (0-7 SAC) Coach Hamilton served his first coaching stint with the U.S. Air Force 2009 Brevard 7-4 (3-4 SAC) 2010 Brevard 4-7 (1-6 SAC) Academy from 1990-1996. During his last three seasons, he called the 1-1 (0-0 SAC) offensive plays for the Falcons in addition to serving as the quarterbacks 2011 Brevard CAREER 58-87 (26-44 SoCon) coach. Air Force competed in four bowl games during Hamilton’s time (4-17 SAC) there and ranked second nationally in rushing and in the top-25 total offense four times. While at Air Force, Hamilton coached quarterback Beau Morgan, who finished in the top-10 in the Heisman Trophy voting and was named a third-team Associated Press All-American in 1996. Under Hamilton’s guidance, Morgan became the first player in NCAA history to rush and pass for over 1,000 yards in a season two times. He also broke the NCAA single season rushing record for a quarterback, along with being only the second player in NCAA history to run and pass for 3,000 yards in a career. Hamilton’s first break as a head coach came at East Tennessee State, where he coached from 1997-2003 and where he amassed a record of 38-41. During his first season at ETSU, Hamilton’s team led the Southern Conference in total offense, total defense and boasted the league’s Male Athlete of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. The team’s 7-4 record in 1997 tied as the second highest win total ever by a Buccaneer squad and gave Hamilton the best record ever by a first-year head coach at ETSU. The Buccaneers set three single-season team records in 1997, including the marks for points per game and total offense per game. ETSU was ranked in the top-25 throughout much of the season, as two of Hamilton’s players were named firstteam All-Americans by the Associated Press and the Sports Network. Hamilton then moved on to be the head coach at Elon in 2004 and 2005. In his first season as head coach he guided the Phoenix to two Southern Conference victories, a first in the school’s young history as a conference member. He posted a 6-16 record at Elon over the two year span where he coached seven All-Southern Conference players, five Southern Conference Athletes of the Month, two Academic All-Conference players and one Academic All-American. In 2006, Hamilton returned to the Air Force Academy to coach the fullbacks for his former college coach, Fisher DeBerry. Hamilton graduated in 1981 from Appalachian State University where he lettered for three years as quarterback under DeBerry and was a team captain as a junior. Hamilton earned his master’s degree in secondary education from The Citadel in 1986. Hamilton and his wife, Jane, a native of Spruce Pine, NC, have three children – a son, Kye and two daughters, Jenna and Alanna. Tornados Ranked 8th in Preseason Conference Poll Brevard College opens ranked eighth last season by the South Atlantic Conference head coaches. The Tornados received eight total votes in the preseason poll. Carson-Newman leads the preseason poll, having clinched a share of the SAC Title in 2008. The Eagles received 62 votes and six first place votes. Catawba and Mars Hill were the other teams in the conference to receive first place votes, with one apiece. FCS Opponent Brevard’s game on the road against Gardner-Webb is the Tornados second game against an FCS opponent since the program was reinstated in 2006. Brevard took on the Runnin’ Bulldogs last season at Spangler Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C., falling 28-14. The Tornados faced the Runnin’ Bulldogs four times from 1934-1950, splitting the series with GWU, 2-2. What’s New For BC in 2011? Brevard College has moved their games back to Brevard Memorial Stadium after spending the 2010 season at Asheville HS Memorial Stadium. The transition back to Brevard will be key to the Tornados as BC will be welcomed back by their fans with the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background of the stadium. Old Man on Campus The Tornados put their first four year class of seniors on the field in the 2009 season. With the program restarting in 2006, only one player remains from that inaugural group in fullback Derek Church. With Church suffering injuries in multiple years, he is ready to make an impact and move up in the BC offensive record books in his senior campaign. Tornados ranked in the 2011 SAC Statistics Derek Church is currently second in the SAC rushing standings, averaging 129.0 yards per game on the ground. Aaron Reese is sixth overall, averaging 84.5 yards per game. Aaron Reese is eighth in the SAC in passing yards per game, avearging 59.0 yards per contest Reese and Church are also in the top 10 in total offense, with Reese averaging 143.5 yards per game, while Church is accumulating 129.0 per contest Church and Kelvin Jeter are in the top 10 in the SAC in all-purpose yards, with Church averaging 152.0 yards per contest, while Jeter is at 103.5 yards per game Anthony Shakir, Donovan Barker and Darren Walker are all tied for first overall in the conference standings with one interception apiece Reese is sixth overall in the SAC in QB efficiency, with a rating of 112.0 Jeter is fourth in the conference in kick return average, with 21.1 yards per kick return attempt Eric Watts leads the South Atlantic Conference in punting average, booming the ball 47.0 yards per attempt Church is tied for third overall in the SAC in scoring per game, averaging 9.0 points per contest BC Records that could be broken in 2011 Rushing Yards 1. 1,254 3. 1,183 4. 957 Neville Bryce Kelvin Jeter Derek Church Rushing Attempts 1. 311 Michael Crumbaker 4. 234 Derek Church 6. 146 Kelvin Jeter Rushing Touchdowns 1. 16 Neville Bryce 3. 13 Derek Church Scoring 1. 125 t3rd. 90 Chase Henry Derek Church Total Offense 1. 1,788 4. 1,183 Michael Crumbaker Kelvin Jeter Solo Tackles 1. 155 2. 101 101 4. 91 Stanley Jones Prince Simunyu Michael Gist Salonick Amos Assisted Tackles 1. 157 3. 93 4. 89 5. 82 Stanley Jones Prince Simunyu Michael Gist Christian Lumbu Total Tackles 1. 352 2. 194 3. 190 Stanley Jones Prince Simunyu Michael Gist Tackles for Loss 1. 23.5 Stanley Jones 2. 22.5 Prince Simunyu Sacks 1. 2. 12.0 10.0 10.0 Simunyu Lumbu Brandon Rawls Christian Lumbu Richard Ray Interceptions 1. 9 2. 4 C.J. Smith, and the senior defensive end is only two sacks away from becoming the Tornados all-time sack leader. Winning in the SAC The Tornados continue to realize that winning in the South Atlantic Conference is a key to football success, as last year’s SAC Champion Wingate went all the way to the NCAA Division II Regional Semifinals. This season, with their schedule set for three home conference games and four on the road, Brevard will look to overcome being picked eighth in the SAC Coaches Preseason poll and continue their improvements in their fourth season as full members of the SAC and the NCAA Division II. The Tornados rushing offense is currently ranked 12th in the nation, averaging 275.0 yards per game, while the passing offense is ranked 147th. In total offense, Brevard is 93rd with 334.0 yards per game and BC is tied for 68th overall in scoring offense at 27.5 points per game. NCAA Rankings/Special Teams Breaking 100 yards rushing A number of successful Brevard College ballcarriers have broken the 100 yard rushing mark in a game in their illustrious career, including all-time leading rushers Neville Bryce, John Taylor and Kelvin Jeter. Aaron Reese joined the group in his first start at quarterback this season, carrying the ball 15 times for 111 yards, including breaking a 45 yard carry from scrimmage on his first official rush. 1,000 yard Rusher Kelvin Jeter became the first 1,000 running back in Brevard College football history, leading the Tornados with seven 100 yard rushing games, including breaking a team record 95-yard rushing touchdown against Southern Virginia last season. Derek Church is closing in on the 1,000 yard mark needing only 43 yards to achieve the elusive mark. A Nose for the End Zone Derek Church began the season fifth on the BC scoring list, having recorded 12 touchdowns through ground and air in his time with the Tornados. This year, the senior sets his mark on the conference and the BC record after scoring twice in the season opener, and is currently 35 points away from marking his place in history. This season, with the team under his leadership, Brevard opened the year battling Gardner-Webb to a stand-still, and the senior saved his best performance in the come-from-behind overtime victory over Johnson C. Smith in which he threw for 100 yards and the game-tying touchdown to Derek Church with 3:20 left in the fourth quarter. Reese, also a member of the BC baseball team, possesses a strong right arm and gives the Tornados the opportunity to gain some yards through the air, while still possessing the quickness and acumen to run the option, having picked up 111 yards rushing in the first game of the season. Jonas Randolph - Randolph, a three-time preseason All-American running back, comes into today’s game sitting in the top 10 all-time among the South Atlantic Conference running backs and is the Mars Hill all-time leader in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and points scored. A dual purpose threat, Randolph already has won the SAC Offensive Player of the Week award for his week one performance in which he picked up 163 yards on 27 carries, while catching two balls for 41 yards. He added another 175 yards and a pair of scores last week against Western Carolina. Last season against the Tornados, Randolph accumulated 103 rushing yards and 49 receiving yards, plus a touchdown, and figures to carry the bulk of the load against the Tornados defense, which comes into the game 107th in the NCAA in allowing 169.0 rushing yards per game. C.J. Wilson - The Tornados leading tackler in the 2011 season was anointed one of the heir apparents to Brevard College All-American linebacker Stanley Jones when he first stepped Jon Richt - After a spirited battle last season on campus. After a sophomore campaign when he between the Richt and Luis Cruz, the son of finished fourth overall on the team with 60 tackles Georgia Head Coach Mark Richt became the and two tackles for loss, everything is clicking for sole quarterback choice of Coach Tim Clifton and the middle linebacker as he has added an he delivered week in and week out for the Lions, improved nose for the ball to his sure-handed tackling ability this season. This season, Richt has continued to contest, is also tied for third overall in the SAC with 1.5 passes have primary signal calling duties for the Lions, averaging 177.5 defensed per game. Wilson will play a key role in Brevard’s yards per game through the air and three touchdowns, while only attempt to stop Jonas Randolph and the Mars Hill run attack in being picked off once. Last season against the Tornados, Richt the contest. was knocked out in the first half due to the Brevard pass rush, but looks to come back with a vengeance after BC defeated the Lions Eric Watts - A 6-4, 225 pound tight end/wide receiver hybrid, Watts attracts defenders every in Mars Hill last season, 35-28. time he lines up outside in preparation to catch a pass. However, Watts brings the additional Rudy Cabral - A native of Asheville, N.C. and value of possessing one of the strongest right legs A.C. After a Jeter carry put the ball on the BC 40 yard line, Reese took the snap and ran the option around the edge, keeping the ball himself as he carried the ball all the way down to the GWU 15 yard line. Four plays later, on fourth-and-1, Church bulled his way into the end zone at the 11:32 mark, and following Austin Clark’s extra point, the Tornados led 7-0. The defenses controlled the remainder of the first quarter as both teams were forced to punt after consecutive threeand-outs, before Gardner-Webb started their third drive of the game in BC territory following a 22 yard punt return by Ricky Rhodes, giving the Runnin’ Bulldogs the ball on the BC 38. After a pair of first downs, Richard Ray burst through the line of scrimmage, sacking Browning inside the red zone and the Tornados defense stiffened up, giving way to a Trever Austin 30 yard field goal with 1:55 left in the first half, putting the score at 7-3. The Runnin’ Bulldogs took their first lead of the contest on their next drive as GWU used six plays to move 37 yards, finishing on Little’s 15 yard carry into the end zone early in the second half, putting GWU up 10-7. The Tornados responded on their next drive, using a 19 yard carry by Church and a 15 yard face mask penalty to most the ball into Gardner-Webb territory. A 15 yard pickup by Kelvin Jeter put Brevard inside the red zone at the GWU 15 yard line, but that was as close as the Tornados were able to come. Clark drilled in the field goal attempt from 33 yards out with 8:05 left in the first half to tie the score up at 10 apiece. Gardner-Webb would score twice more in the first half as Perry would haul in a 34 yard touchdown reception from Browning, capping off a five play-70 yard drive with 6:03 left in the half and Austin drilled a 33 yard field goal in the closing seconds to give the Runnin’ Bulldogs the 20-10 halftime lead. After a scoreless third quarter, Little punched the ball in from one yard out to cap the longest drive of the evening as GWU moved the ball 80 yards in 14 plays and 3:37 to go up 27-10. The Tornados continued to battle back, as Church added his second touchdown of the evening, this time bulldozing his way in from 10 yards out to put the score at 27-17 with 10:56 left in the contest, but the Runnin’ Bulldogs put the game away on Little’s three yard carry, ending the suspense in the 2011 season opener for both squads. 1 7 3 2 3 17 3 0 0 4 7 14 Score 17 34 Scoring Summary: 1st 11:32 BC - Derek Church 6 yd run (Austin Clark kick) 01:55 GWU - AUSTIN, Trever 30 yd field goal 2nd 11:54 GWU - LITTLE, Kenny 15 yd run (AUSTIN, Trever kick) 08:05 BC - Austin Clark 33 yd field goal 06:03 GWU - PERRY III, James 34 yd pass from BROWNING (AUSTIN kick) 00:18 GWU - AUSTIN, Trever 33 yd field goal 4th 13:13 GWU - LITTLE, Kenny 1 yd run (AUSTIN, Trever kick) 10:56 BC - Derek Church 10 yd run (Austin Clark kick) 06:24 GWU - LITTLE, Kenny 3 yd run (AUSTIN, Trever kick) First Downs Rushing Attempts-Yards Passing Yards Passes Completions-Attempts-Int Total Offensive Plays-Yards Fumbles: Number-Lost Penalties: Number-Yards Punts (Number-Avg) Punt returns: Number-Yards-TD Kickoff returns: Number-Yds-TD Interceptions: Number-Yds-TD Fumble Returns: Number-Yds-TD. Smith 35 (OT) Sept. 10, 2011 - Brevard Memorial Stadium Derek Church capped on a 196 yard offensive performance with a three yard touchdown catch with 3:20 in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 35 apiece and Darren Walker picked off Keahn Wallace’s pass on third down in the first overtime period, paving way to Austin Clark’s gamewinning 18 yard field goal as the Tornados survived a wild home opener with a 38-35 victory over the visiting Golden Bulls. In their first contest back in Brevard Memorial Stadium, Brevard (1-1) and Johnson C. Smith (1-1), combined to provide a complete display off offensive prowess as the Tornados racked up 305 yards on the ground, led by Church’s 161 yards on 29 carries, while Wallace completed 25 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns for the Golden Bulls. Fittingly enough though, it was a defensive stop that made the difference as Walker stepped in front of a pass from Wallace targeted for Daniel Taylor on third-and-12 in the opening possession of the first overtime period, giving the Tornados the chance to go for the win. An Aaron Reese incompletion set up a Brevard field goal attempt late in the fourth quarter but Clark was unable to connect from 40 yards out, pulling the ball wide left to keep the score at 35-28, but the Tornados defense rose up to the challenge, forcing a three-and-out. The BC special teams got involved in the action, breaking through the line on Tyler Rabb’s ensuing punt attempt and the ball was tipped, fluttering 16 yards before being downed on the Brevard 34 yard line. With new life, the Tornados moved the ball 66 yards on 11 plays, scoring on fourth-and-goal from the three yard line as Reese found Church all by himself in the front of the end zone with 3:20 on the close to tie the game. The Golden Bulls had one final chance in regulation, marching down the field, but Rommie Fairchild broke through the line of scrimmage on third-and-five on the Brevard 22 yard line, sacking Wallace in the middle of the field, and during the ensuing scramble to get the JCSU field goal unit on the field and in play, Julius Wright’s 40 yard attempt was pushed wide right as time expired, sending the teams to overtime. Johnson C. Smith took over possession first in the overtime period and after Rufus Jenkins nearly picked off Wallace’s first pass attempt, Walker stepped in front of the desperation pass into the end zone, giving the Tornados the chance to go for the win. Brevard moved the ball down to the JCSU one yard line before bringing Clark onto the field to attempt the game-winner. After a timeout by JCSU in attempt to ice the kicker, the freshman from Grayson, Ga. calmly drilled the game-winner through the uprights, setting off a celebration in Brevard Memorial Stadium as the Tornados defeated the Golden Bulls, 38-35. 2 14 14 3 14 7 4OT 0 0 7 3 Score 35 38 Scoring Summary: 1st 11:30 JCSU - MATA,Nick 7 yd pass from WALLACE,Keahn (WRIGHT,Julius kick) 4:12 BC - Tydrell Wright 32 yd run (Austin Clark kick) 2nd 12:25 BC - Aaron Reese 2 yd run (Austin Clark kick) 3:11 BC - Eric Watts 40 yd pass from Aaron Reese (Austin Clark kick) 2:24 JCSU - TAYLOR,Daniel 66 yd pass from WALLACE,Keahn (WRIGHT,Julius kick) 0:19 JCSU - WALLACE,Keahn 1 yd run (WRIGHT,Julius kick) 3rd 8:26 JCSU - ANDERSON 10 yd pass from WALLACE,Keahn (WRIGHT,Julius kick) 3:44 BC - Jack Woerner 2 yd run (Austin Clark kick) 0:12 JCSU - WALLACE,Keahn 7 yd run (WRIGHT,Julius kick) 4th 3:20 BC - Derek Church 3 yd pass from Aaron Reese (Austin Clark kick) OT 15:00 BC - Austin Clark 18 yd field goal Brevard First Downs 19 Rushing Attempts-Yards 62-305 Passing Yards 100 Passes Completions-Attempts-Int 7-15-1 Total Offensive Plays-Yards 77-405 Fumbles: Number-Lost 2-1 Penalties: Number-Yards 8-73 Punts (Number-Avg) 2-48.0 Punt returns: Number-Yards-TD 1-10-0 Kickoff returns: Number-Yds-TD 6-346-0 Interceptions: Number-Yds-TD 3-20-0 Fumble Returns: Number-Yds-TD. 0-0-0 Possession Time 34:58 Third-Down Conversions 7 of 17 Fourth-Down Conversions 3 of 5 Red-Zone Scores-Chances 4-4 Rushing Derek Church Aaron Reese Tydrell Wright Jack Woerner Andre Overholt Tevin Bradshaw Devon Holmes Eric Watts Kelvin Jeter Totals...
