HOMECOMING By Jada Morgan
Students at Jeannette High School recently
participated in the 2015
Homecoming game and
dance. On October 9th, as
Jeannette played against
new rival team, Clairton,
Mr. Lawson and the homecoming court were honored.
During the pep assembly
held earlier that day during
school, the court performed
their traditional dances to
various songs played by the
Jeannette Marching Band.
The 2015 homecoming court underclassmen
representatives included:
Freshmen, Zoe Manolis and
Nick Christoff; Sophomores,
Samantha Filak and Robert
Cechetti; and Juniors, Hannah Poth and Blaze Tran.

“throwback” songs as the 52
couples danced the night away.
With participation from
the students and chaperones
including Mrs. Potter, Miss.
Brainard, Ms. Deiseroth, Mr.
Lawson, Ms. Rozycki, and Mr.
Shifko, the dance was said to be
a fun and memorable night. The
food was provided by Parkwood
restaurant in Greensburg. Mr.

A Season to Remember By Marc McManus
Jeannette football team kicked
off their season with a blowout. In their
first game against Riverview, the
Jayhawks took the win with a score of
38-6. The team also won their game
against Serra Catholic with a score of
42-7. In their match against Springdale,
the Jayhawks kept their undefeated
streak with a win of 33-6.
Jayhawks take the field every Friday
night, you can guarantee that all of the
loyal fans, parents, and students won’t
miss it.

Jayhawks Community Outreach:
In an effort to bond and create
team chemistry, the team showed their
sensitive side and love for the Jeannette
community by appearing at a church
charity event. The players represented
the Jeannette Jayhawks at the “Day of
Prayer for the City of Jeannette.” The
event was sponsored by Jeannette Ministerial. For the event, the team held
hands in a demonstration of hope for the
future, and helped out wherever they
could . When asked how it felt to give
back to the community, the team responded that they were just happy that
they could show a different side and do
something special for their community
that didn't involve contact sports.
Friday night football games in
Jeannette are also very special to the
community. The Jayhawk fans show
their pride by coming to as many games
as they can to show their support for
their team. Since Jeannette is very
small, the spirit of the fans is what motivates the Jayhawks to play their hardest every week.
In Jeannette, many of the citizens are well-known by each other, and
they all have the same mindset when it
comes to Jayhawk football: Winning!
Jeannette is built on idea of close
friends, family, and football; when the

Upon reflecting on our monumental 700th win, the Jayhawks are
taking a look back into the team’s history. Here is some of what they found
In 1900, Jeannette won their
first game with a score of 41-33. It was a
monumental game for Jeannette because it was there first ever game.
Jeannette has a lot of moments to remember but the one most remembered
is in the year of 2006 when Jeannette
won the WPIAL championships against
their rival team, GCC, with a score of
24-14. Jeannette has won many championships including WPIAL AA championships more than once, PIAA state
championships more than once . There
are many victories that Jeannette remembers, but many of their most favorable ones are against Jeannette's rivals
GCC.
Remembering Coach Skip:
Coach Skip was a coach for the
Jeannette Jayhawks High School Football. He was dedicated to the team and
was involved in everything. Skip was at
every practice in the morning and afternoon throughout the summer and during the season. Skip was very well-liked
by the players. Gio Vonne Sanders said,
“Skip always dapped us up when we
walked into lifting and always was ex-
cited to be around the team and coach
us.” Skip did so much for the football
team. Even Coach Hall said that Skip
was his right-hand man. After Skip
passed, the entire football and community attended his viewing and funeral in
honoring of his life. Coach Skip will always be missed and remembered by the
city of Jeannette, and we are grateful
for what he has contributed to the team
As a memorial for any players
or coaches on the Jeannette football
team/staff, fans could buy a balloon with
a player/coaches name on it. It was a
great way to bring back joyful memories
of all the players and staff we have lost
of the years, who all have made the
team what it is today. Even though
they're gone they still are remembered.

Jeanette's 700 win was the
highlight of the season and not just because its are 700th win but because they
are 700 games that were full of memories. Win or lose, Jeannette always has
a good game and always bounce back no
matter what, that's why Jeannette loves
football because it's always their for
them no matter what its always entertaining and brings families closer together.

JHS Golf Team By Hope Gabler
Mr. Shifko has been the Jeannette High School’s Golf coach for eight
years. Mr. Shifko likes seeing the
growth in the players, and how much
they love the game. Unlike some coaches, Mr.Shifko's goals did not consist of
simply winning the matches--his largest
goal was to make the players better.
Coach Shifko did achieve that
goal this season. “Our team started several young, inexperienced players so
winning matches was not a true goal.
Instead I was looking for growth from
the young players and that happened,”
Shifko explained.
A few key players saw great
improvements this year. Brent Billeck
and Anthony Naples dropped their
scores into the low 40’s, while Jake Mortimer and Mark Urbanic dropped theirs
into the 50’s.
When asked about the team’s
greatest match for this season, Shifko
responded, “The best was against
Greensburg Central Catholic, scoring in
the 250’s.”
Another key player, Senior,
Mary Katherine Paulone has been golfing since she was nine. She wanted to
join because she thought it would be fun
to golf with some of her friends. The
Bird Call asked Paulone if this was a
family tradition. She stated, ‘’My parents and brothers play and it affected
my decision to play because I wanted to
play on the golf course (too).”
It seems that many of the Jeannette’s team’s players have early experience playing with their family. When
The Bird Call asked freshman Tyler
Scalzo if golf was a tradition in his family too, he responded ¨Yes. My Uncle
Sean plays golf. It influenced me because, he told me I was good.¨
Mr. Shifko loves teaching the
game that everybody can play for the
rest of their lives. Shifko explained,
“The best part of coaching is seeing my
players develop a love and enjoyment of
a game that they can play for the rest of
their lives. I also like seeing my players
eventually become great players, even if
that happens after high school graduation.”
Jayhawk Tennis Squad By Gio Vonne Sanders
Jeannette Senior High school is
steadily expanding and improving their
tennis team in terms of their skills on
the court. The team is coached by Mr.
Lawson. Even though, they have not
won a match yet, they are confident that
this is the season they will be able to
win one. When Coach Lawson was
asked how the season is going he said,
“The team is playing much better every
single match and making every match
closer.”
In addition to improving their
skills, the team played their best match
against California Area School District
this season so far. Every match was
close, intense, and very exciting. Abby
Stahl won her match. While her win
helped the team, the team still lost 4-1.

The tennis team has made
many good memories during the course
of this season. When asked what was his
favorite memory was , Coach Lawson
said, “Going out to eat after away
matches is exciting.” The kids really like
it too and it’s very enjoyable. In fact,
coach Lawson stated, “eating out at
Hoss’s was the highlight of the season.”
The tennis program has many
goals for their next season. They hope to
keep the tennis program rolling and to
get more students involved. Mr. Lawson
wants the returning players to improve
their game. Hannah Poth also agrees: "I
want to improve on my serving for next
year, and I'm hoping that the team can
win a match.”

Boys’ Soccer By Natalya Johnson
History of modern-day soccer was
established in 1853. While football appears
to dominate in the United States, soccer
reigns as the most popular sport in Europe
and in other parts of the world. Soccer was
even played in china during the 2nd and
3rd centuries. Soccer is important in
Brazillian culture as well, as Brazil has
won most of the World Cups.

Girls’ Soccer By Natalya Johnson
In most parts of the world, soccer is
known as the dominant sport. This sport is
played between two teams that have 11
players on each team. They have to kick the
ball into the other team’s goal without
touching the ball with their hands. It seems
to be a very simple sport but actually it is
hard and very exciting to watch.
The Jeannette Senior High School
soccer team has two junior captions, Hannah Morrison and Maddy Harbaugh. When
asked what she likes best about the sport,
Hannah Morrison said, “Playing with my
teammates.” Believe it or not Hannah Morrison has played soccer for 12 years. That’s
why she is really good and knows so much
about the game.
On October 19th, They lost 9-0
against GCC. Their first game of the season
they lost 1-5 against West Mifflin.
Jeannette’s soccer team
has had plenty of injuries this season. Lauren Banks is the top scoring
player for the girls’ team. Chloe
Stein is the teams second strongest
scorer.

Cheerleading By Jada Morgan
The Jeannette High School Cheerleading squad
has a lot of new additions to the team this 2015-2016
season. New Head Coach, Nicole Reott, and new Assistant Coach, Sarah Pitzer, brought fresh ideas and traditions for the future JHS cheerleaders. Both Nicole and
Sarah have cheer backgrounds and were both voted
captain their senior year at JHS. This season’s captains
include seniors Alana Jordan and Maggie Manolis, and
co-captains this season are seniors Alexandra Pohl and
Niah Wolfe.
Also, the JHS cheerleading squad has five new
freshmen cheerleaders: Ariana Daye, Isabella Cilli,
Olivia Ponzetti, Elise Johnson, and Brittany Carl. When
asked what their favorite part of their first season as
JHS cheerleaders is thus far, Isabella Cilli and Olivia
Ponzetti replied, “Being flyers and learning all of the
new stunts and chants this year. We also enjoyed the
team bonding activities to help us improve our skills as
a team.”
Captains Alana Jordan and Maggie Manolis
have big plans for the cheerleaders for this upcoming
season. When asked what her favorite part of the season
was so far, Alana responded, “Cheering at all of the football games with my fellow teammates because I love
making memories with my cheer sisters.” Maggie Manolis stated that her expectations for the upcoming season
are to, “get everyone healthy to stunt and get everything done in
advance.” Senior Mia Hill was asked what her expectations were
for the upcoming season and if she had any advice for her fellow
and future cheerleaders, and she responded with, “My expectations are to enjoy my senior year as a cheerleader, and my advice
is to stay focused on what really matters and when you feel like
you want to quit, always remember the reasons why you worked
so hard to become a cheerleader.”
The JHS cheerleaders also participated in their third annual Greensburg Home Depot Kid’s Craft Day as helpers on October 3rd. With a season of changes and new beginnings, the JHS
cheerleaders are ready to show off their progress as a team, and
most importantly are excited to enjoy the celebration of our team’s
700 Wins! Go Jayhawks!

JHS Security: Meeting Officer Mason By Kreo Fetty
For the first time, Jeannette
has brought in additional security from
the outside community. The school district hired Resource Officer Christopher
Mason to not only to keep the students
protected, but to also befriend and teach
them as well. Teachers have been encouraged to invite Officer Mason to their
classrooms for assistance on lessons that
pertain to his field of work. This is a
great addition to the school’s safety and
security measures.
While this is his first year as a
school resource officer, Officer Mason
has 22 years experience in the police
force. When making his career choice,
he was inspired by his father who made
him into the person that he is now. His
father was also an officer previously,
and who showed respect to everybody no
matter who they were. His father felt
that, “Everybody was equal and deserved to be treated like it.” He planned
on being an officer because he was influenced by his dad's heroism, and
studied at IUP before becoming a police
officer.
Officer Mason is very excited
for what the school district has to offer
him. “The best thing about my job is
being able to see smiles on the kids
faces,” Officer Mason explained. When
asked what advice he has for students
and future policemen, he said, “Treat
everyone with respect, it’s the way of
life.” If you’re ever in need, Officer Mason is the guy to go to!

The 90’s are back and they’re bigger than ever.
From mass market stores like H&M to designer brands
like Moschino, the 90’s is all over today’s fashion finds.
From flannels tied on waists to slouchy harem pants,
these trends have us saying “Can’t touch this!” I am in
love with fashion and stay updated on these type of
things. Lucky you-- because I’ve got your back! I’ll keep
you posted on ways to show off your personal style using
new trends. Here are a few sets that will have you looking dope and fresh giving everyone life through your
personal spin on my picks. Express yourself the way you
want to, and others will follow!

This look is all modern day
grunge. It’s basic enough for
everyday style, yet it still
has a grungy edge to it.

can put your own spin on it and make it yours. Look for

My fashion sense tends to take normal everyday pieces to over the top.
This look went from just a normal
look to something that is completely
me. This outfit’s base is jogger overalls that can be found at forever21.com, a black t shirt, a new era
varsity jacket from luisaviaroma.com, and black Vans Hi Sk8’s,
from vans.com. I then added RayBans, a black beanie with bold lettering on it, and black stud earrings.
You can add your own spin on this like I did by choosing labels,
words, or phrases that fit your personality! It is easy to find your
own look when wearing 90s inspired geek chic.
Because I know most of JHS are Jordan fans, here’s a look that I threw
together that is modern but still gives
the 90’s Bull era, urban feel. This look
features my favorite Jordans, Retro
13’s, a Bulls #23 tee shirt, and red
pants accented by black leather with
a grey geometric pattern on the hips.
Top it off with a signature Jordan hat,
Ray-Ban glasses, a watch, or even

2016 Presidential Elections. Here are a
few facts that one should know about
the elections.

What are the Presidential Elections?
The Presidential Elections occur every 4
years when citizens of America vote for
the candidates that have fulfilled all of
the requirements to become the President of the United States. The voters
are required to be over the age of 18 to
vote, but citizens are not required to
vote by the country. Candidates who
meet the requirements to run for president participate in debates, meetings,
Democrats leading in the polls are Hillary Clinton, Martin O’Malley, and Bernie
Sanders. Their status in the polls
amongst each other depend on their
status throughout the states.
Where can one watch the Presidential Elections?
There are many ways that one can follow the presidential elections. One common way that people follow the elections
is through the news. Media announces
many of the debates, campaigns, and
interviews with the candidates, and
they usually receive their opinions
about fellow candidates that you usually
wouldn’t hear. Recently, social media
plays a huge role in receiving opinions
and information from the candidates,
especially Twitter.
When will the presidential elections
occur?
The primary voting throughout the
country to elect final candidates will
occur in the spring of 2016. The general
voting for the final election of the 45th
president will occur during the entire
month of October to the beginning of
November 2016.
Why do the candidates run for the
elections?
Presidential candiates run in the elections for many reasons. One of the main
reasons why they run is to prove that
their strategies and ability to improve
the country’s status. There is a lot of
debate with Obamacare, ISIS, and
budgeting, and the candidates are sharing their

the elections?
One can beinvolved with the Presidential Elections by tuning in to local news
and radio stations, listening to or watching debates or campaigns on TV or if
you are 18 or older register to vote.

Mrs. Potter’s Glamour Art course created art from
recycled materials for a class assignment. Students
were challenged to not only design their original
pieces, but to also creatively photograph their designs
being worn by the models of their choosing. Their
study of style elements paid off, and these students
found unique ways to turn trash into class.
