After the hugely successful sale late 2013 of The Peter B. Maling library and other vendors which grossed over $100,000,
Dunbar Sloane Ltd are delighted to offer our first rare book sale of 2014.
The sale is chiefly comprised of three local collections and we are indebted to Bill and the families of David and Don for
entrusting Dunbar Sloane Ltd with the sale of these wonderful books.
Bill Patterson of Miramar has been a collector of books for longer than he cares to remember. A local journalist for many
years Bill has a passion for the written word. His collection comprises C19th reference books, journals, Victorian annuals
and illustrated volumes.
The late Don Spiller was a respected research scientist and latterly a well known local book dealer and collector and a
regular buyer and seller at Dunbar Sloane Ltd.Don’s books are a diverse and eclectic mix which includes antiquarian, art
reference, New Zealand and other historical, travel and literary volumes.
The late David Medway, Notary Public, Barrister and Solicitor who worked in New Plymouth had a special interest in
natural history and in particular ornithology and conservation with a particular interest in the ornithology of Cooks
Voyages. David travelled widely following these passions attending numerous congress and conferences across the
globe and was an honorary consultant in historical ornithology to the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington as well as a
member of numerous other societies.
He published several papers dealing with aspects of the ornithology of Cook’s Voyages, New Zealand ornithology and his
assistance was acknowledged in 22 published works.

certainly Evans's own set and with 2
original sketches by him to the front
endpapers, signed also on the loose
fly leaf by Roald Amundsen, Cecil
H Meares, Captain John Noel, John
Hugh Mather, Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen,
and Cherry Keaton.
Amundsen needs no introduction
to Antarctic exploration boffins, as
the first man to the South Pole.
Hjalmar Riiser Larsen (1890-1965)
Norwegian aviation pioneer and
generally regarded as the founder
of the Norwegian Royal Air Force.
His polar exploration began in 1925
when Amundsen asked him to be
his deputy and pilot for an attempt
to fly over the North Pole.
John Hugh Mather was a Petty
Officer in Capt Scott's crew, and
participated in the allied campaign
against the Bolsheviks in Arctic
Russia and achieved considerable
distinction in that area of
operations.
Cecil H Meares (1877-1937), was
the chief dog handler and Russian
interpreter on the Terra Nova.
Cherry Keaton, British wildlife
photographer and filmmaker,
was hired by and accompanied
Theodore Roosevelt on his 1909
British East Africa safari and hunting
expedition and went on to produce
the silent movie "Roosevelt in
Africa".
Captain John Baptist Lucius Noel,
official photographer on the 1922
and 1924 Everest Expeditions, the
1924 trip famous now for Mallory
and Irvines attempt on the summit,
where opinion for decades was split
over whether they had got to the

One of the most important
works in the history of Antarctic
exploration. James Clark Ross was
an experienced arctic explorer,
having accompanied his uncle Sir
John Ross, on the latters two polar
voyages and having sailed on all
four of Parry's arctic expeditions. On
June 31st, 1831 while on the second
Ross expedition, he discovered the
North Magnetic Pole. In 1839 he
was given command of the present
expedition, the purpose of which
was to conduct magnetic research
and to try to reach the magnetic
pole. On this famous voyage, Ross
circumnavigated the Antarctic
continent, discovered the Ross Sea,
the Ross Ice Shelf, Victoria Land,
Erebus and Terror Gulf (named
after the ships of the expedition),
Mount Erebus, and attempted to
penetrate the Weddell Sea. The
expedition also visited the Crozet
Islands, Kerguelen Island, Tasmania,
Australia, New Zealand, Campbell
Island and the Falkland Islands. This
was the first scientific expedition
sent out for Antarctic exploration
and research. On his return to
England, Ross was knighted and
awarded the gold medal of the
Geographical Societies of London.
Please note, although this set bears
Peter Malings bookplates, this is not

CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS
The terms and conditions under which the buyer acts at a sale are
detailed at the back of this catalogue. We recommend that you read
and understand these conditions of business before registering to bid
at an auction. This sale is subject to the conditions of business printed
in this catalogue and to the reserves.
AFTER THE AUCTION
Viewing
All lots are available for inspection prior to the sale. Although staff will
endeavour to answer your enquiries, and give advice, the final decision
to bid, is at your discretion and liability.
Pre-Sale Estimates
The estimated prices printed below the catalogue descriptions are in
New Zealand dollars and are the approximate prices expected to be
realised, excluding buyers premium. They are not definitive, they are
prepared well in advance of the sale and they are subject to revision.
Condition reports
Dunbar Sloane Ltd will provide a verbal condition report if you would
like an opinion on any particular lot prior to purchasing. All goods are
sold “as is” and it is up to the buyer to satisfy themselves as to the
condition of an item before the auction.
THE AUCTION
Registration
To bid at the auction you will need to register for a bidding number at
the front desk either during the viewing or prior to the auction.
Buying at the Auction
Please bid clearly and promptly using your bidding number. When you
successfully purchase a lot the auctioneer will ask you for your number,
and this will show on your invoice.
Approximate Selling Rate
Auctions are generally conducted at the rate of about 100 lots per
hour. However, this can vary.
Absentee Bidding
If you are unable to attend the auction, Dunbar Sloane Ltd can bid on
your behalf according to your written instructions. This is a free service
for intended buyers. Please complete clearly the form at the back of

with Dunbar Sloane Ltd at least 24 hours prior to the sale and is strictly
subject to a minimum lot estimate of $1000 or greater. Please note
