David: Why is learning languages so important?
Professor Eugene Eoyang: People talk about language as if it is a tool, but a tool
is something you use for a purpose and then throw away. Language is not a tool.
Language has life. It changes, and is not mechanical. Liberal Arts can teach Hong
Kong students how to be adaptable, not mechanical.
David: Any advice to the students?
Professor Eugene Eoyang: Students need to learn adaptability to compete in the
world today. Multiculturalism is not only being Chinese and English. In the past, Hong
Kong students competed only with Hong Kong students, but that is not true anymore.
What was good enough ten years ago, is not good enough any more.

Professor Eugene Eoyang: The world is changing too quickly for a specialized
degree. Liberal Arts at Lingnan offers students the skill of learning, which a computer
scientist or an accountant might not have. Some accounting executives would rather
hire a Liberal Arts graduate over someone with an accounting degree because they
want to teach their own style of accounting, and need workers who are adaptable. By
teaching the Liberal Arts, Lingnan is giving its students an advantage in that respect,
and that advantage will become more and more important in the years to come.
Notes : Professor Eugene Eoyang is a renowned scholar in comparative literature and
translations. He has several publications on comparative literature, globalization theory,
and multiculturalism throughout the years. He’s the editor of Liberal Arts Education:
Lingnan University and the World (2002). He also has been a generous supporter of
SSC’s English Enhancement Programme.

I attended the AIESEC Asia-Pacifica “HEROES” Conference held on October
18-21st in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The conference was attended by AIESEC
members from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Bangladesh,
Australia, Taiwan, Mainland China, Japan, Korea, Canada, Finland, Hungary,
and Rwanda in addition to others. The objective of the conference was to
educate the delegates, AIESEC members, on how to develop a project which
builds international exchange (internships). We were immersed in intensive
training to build the brainpower and capacity of the delegates so as to return
to our home countries with a new perspective on how to develop a project.

I strive for life experience in addition to academic, that which educates us
beyond the book, beyond the classroom – and that which grants us rewards
beyond our expectations. As a result, I have chosen, as many AIESEC
members have, to balance studies with doing and with working toward a
real-world objective (not only a grade). As a result, the walls of the university
are no longer limited to the campus; they expand to the community, and
connect to the entire world.

Afterwards, the Tuen Mun Police and the Lingnan team
formed by Lingnan staff and alumni played a friendly
soccer match. It was a thrilling game that ended in a
3:3 draw.
“Breakfast with the President is a good opportunity to share with him our experiences of
campus life. I found that President Yuk-Shee Chan is a very nice and friendly person. He
gives valuable advice on life planning and academic development. In future meetings,

and friendly soccer match with police officers
An inter-hostel tug of war competition was held on 25 November 2007 in celebration of
Lingnan’s 120th Founding Anniversary and the 40th Anniversary of Re-establishment
in Hong Kong. The event also marked the kick-off of the Student Activities Centre at the
Multi-purpose Outdoor Sports Ground. Hall C and Hall A went to the final, and Hall C
won the championship. Students were excited and hostel spirit was strong.
President’s Cup – Inter-hostel Sports
Competitions
The President’s Cup is an inter-hostel sports competition held annually to promote sports
and hostel spirit. Jointly organized by Student Hostel Associations (SHAs) and SSC, the
Term 1 competitions were a huge success, with Badminton, Volleyball, Table Tennis,
and Squash events. In Term 2, men’s and women’s basketball and soccer competitions
will be held. Play for your hostel by enrolling with your hostel representatives!

Hong Kong and was held at CUHK. The Lingnan team

Lingather Programme: Dinner with Alumni
Mentors
To assist students in better planning and preparing for their future careers,
outstanding alumni from various career fields are invited every year in March
to share their valuable working and job hunting experience with current
students at dinner gatherings in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Priority
will be given to final year students, but some places will be open to year 1
and 2 students.

The 4th LCMP Opening Ceremony was held on 24 September 2007. President YukShee Chan delivered the welcoming speech and presented certificates to 35 alumni
mentors who will be guiding 60 final year students as mentees.

“Last year, I arrived at Lingnan with many uncertainties. Luckily, I was reassured very
soon after meeting my peer mentors and group-mates during the 3-day University
Orientation Programme (UOP). Since the UOP, we have developed solid friendship as
well as a strong sense of belonging towards Lingnan. I have since decided to pay back
by joining the peer mentoring programme. As a peer mentor, we will learn to assume
a responsibility of helping freshmen to adjust to the new environment, and to cultivate
peer support and Lingnanian Spirit.”

“As a mentee, the most valuable thing I have gained from the UOP was forming many
new friendships. Before I attended the UOP I had no friends at Lingnan. In the 3-daycamp, I met many people, not only my group-mates and mentors, but also freshmen
from other groups. I remember one of the most impressive things was that every group
kept shouting the slogan of their hall before the events began. It was so amazing and
I could not forget that scene!”

Various interesting ILP activities were introduced in

Kely Circus School
Through social circus, students experienced the magic of team spirit and communication
skills on team success.
Introduction to Forensic Science
Students were inspired by the use of forensic science in assisting the police in case
investigation.
The Power of Magic and Hypnotism
Students were fascinated by the demonstration of how hypnotism can be skillfully
applied in magic. They gained more understanding on the sub-conscious level of our
psychological state and the power to bring about change in our mind.
Breakfast in the Morning (Joy of Cooking)
Scholarships
Our PhD student Chen Lijuan won the scholarship which were offered to postgraduate
students territory-wide. Winning such a highly competitive scholarship is a further
testimony of the competency of Lingnan students. Three cheers for Lijuan’s
achievement.

Scholarship this year. I think, by providing female students with scholarships and with
a platform through which they can build up a better networking and gain more social

How to Manage Time and Cope with Stress
Stress is the body’s normal response to a challenge, threat, or excitement. A small
amount of stress can actually be beneficial – it can make you alert and focused
– but too much stress means you will have trouble thinking clearly and this means
you aren’t likely to do your best work. Self-management on a variety of levels is the
key, and managing time is the best way for a student to succeed.
Tips for Time Management:
1.Start to manage your time at the beginning of the semester.
2.Organize your semester by plotting the important dates on a large calendar.
3. Set some goals for yourself, such as the grades you would like to receive in your
courses.
4. Break tasks into smaller, more manageable jobs.
5. Make a weekly schedule to indicate lectures, meetings, study time etc.
6. Know your ”Prime Time” and use it to concentrate on study
7. Plan time for leisure/ recreation
8. Use “To Do” lists and set priorities when you have a lot to do in a day

Enhancement
Programmes
With the special funding from ZeShan Foundation, Lingnan has
been able to employ two ZeShan English tutors from overseas
to work under the Student Services Centre to organize English
Enhancement programmes for two years. This year, Ms Rose
Cheng from Beloit College and Mr David Moser from Bard
College have arranged many interesting activities and friendly
discussion sessions. They are also available to students in need
of private tutoring or advising. Students can utilize the tutors
for advice in written assignments and job applications, as well
as for practising one-on-one spoken English in preparation for
interviews or oral examinations.

In the past three months, we found that our major event “English Corner”
is popular among students. We have conversations over topics such as
“Experience in study abroad”, “Your favourite karaoke song”. Regular
participants told us they enjoyed chatting with English speakers on various
topics. Every other Wednesday, Rose and David teach “Learning Slang”
workshops. While watching mainstream media, students take notes on the
slang usage and cultural references found throughout. Students who come
to our workshops found that learning English slang and idioms help them
understand the culture of the language. Students also take part in our “Global
Issue Discussion” groups. This term, discussions covered issues of Climate

“Project X provides a valuable chance for me to learn from different people like the
social workers, my teammates and the youth assigned to me. Although Project X was
a hard task for me at the beginning, after training and learning, I have become a
confident peer counsellor. It is very rewarding to be able to help my young friend.”

“I have participated in the Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps for half and a year and I am
very pleased with my experience. I have made new friends and learned about topics
like aviation and international etiquette. On weekends, I attended activities such as
hiking, annual camp, and community service projects.”

On weekends, we organized field trips for local students to have
a whole day adventure with native English speakers. Outings
to Tai O. Lamma Island and Cheung Chau were organized in
September, October and November respectively.
Lingnan Off-Campus Volunteer Experience (L.O.V.E.) is designed to widen students’
scope of horizons by exposing them to the needs of society, and to impart a sense of
responsibility and service to the community through various projects. Among others,
Project X and Air Cadet are two more long-term programmes under L.O.V.E.

The English Enhancement Team has many upcoming
programmes to be excited about in the second term 2007/2008.
On March 1 & 2, we will bring a group of students to a local
campsite for a two-day-one-night team-building activity that
will challenge them to work together to solve problems, and
meet goals while doing it in English. We will also organize a
new session of ILP class called “Learning English through Hiphop”. In addition to the formal programmes, Rose and David
will continue meeting privately with students to edit written
classwork, and practise verbal English skills.

New Year has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly,
forward to the coming year. Did you make any New Year’s resolutions?
I do have some resolutions related to my counselling work and would like to share them
with you. First, I would like to demystify and promote the counselling service on campus.
You may agree that we all need someone we can confide in to talk to, especially when
we are facing some life challenges. My colleague, Ms Ophelia Tam, and I would like to
be that “someone” for you while you are studying at Lingnan. Secondly, in this year, I
would like to enhance students’ awareness on their mental health issues. Exhibitions,
workshops, and talks on mental health issues will be launched so as to enhance
students’ academic self-confidence and functioning. So, stay tuned! The promotion
of diversity on campus, last but not least, is my third resolution. We all are different.
Let’s “dare to be different” and love ourselves regardless of our physical and mental
constraints, sexual orientation, or cultural identity.

At the start of the year 2008, may I wish you all
a prosperous year ahead, in particular a fruitful
learning experience at Lingnan University.
I also wish to welcome sixty-two students who
have just joined us as exchange students—thirtyeight from the Chinese mainland and twenty-four
international students from various countries.
This is a good opportunity for local and non-local
students to live and study together, and learn of
one another’s culture.
The Lunar New Year is coming—the year of the
Rat is supposed to be a year of plenty, bringing
good opportunities and prospects. All ventures
begun at this time will most likely be successful
if one prepares well. It is also a year that brings
the restless and inquisitive nature out of us.
