PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear ASSA Members,
The 2016 ASSA National Specialty is fast approaching. Complete information for the National that starts
Saturday, April 16, with the Herding Test and Trial and ends Saturday, April 23, with Best Of Breed judging can be found
on the ASSA Website. Entries for Futurity, Conformation, Herding, and Performance events close Wednesday noon,
March 23, 2016. For those of you who plan to attend the 2016 National, I look forward to seeing you at John Ascuaga’s
Nugget Casino Resort in Reno (Sparks), Nevada.
ASSA and Shelties were recently promoted at two Meet The Breed events.
The 2015 Eukanuba
AKC Championship Show that was held in December in Orlando, Florida, was hosted by members of the Tampa Bay
Area and Mid-Florida Shetland Sheepdog Clubs. Jennie Hynes and a number of volunteers represented ASSA and
Shelties at the January 2016 AKC Meet The Breeds event in New York City. Collages of photos and recognition of club
members and volunteers who assisted with both booths appear in this Bulletin Board. Thank you to the Florida clubs
and Jennie and her group for again volunteering to organize a presence at these Meet The Breed events. Their
knowledge and expertise are much appreciated. and provide a valuable public education service.
The 2014 ASSA HANDBOOK project will be underway shortly. Lynda Bernier is the HANDBOOK Editor for the
2014 book. Dogs that completed AKC Conformation and Performance titles and dog show wins during the
2014 calendar year are eligible to be featured in the book. Watch the ASSA Website Home Page at www.assa.org for
the Information Flyer, Master Order Form, and Photograph Submission Form. Deadline for book orders and photo
submissions is June 1, 2016.
The Sheltie community, family, and friends said farewell to three ASSA Members who passed away in recent
months after lengthy illnesses. Toni Mapes, Toven Shelties, and Locklyn Guzman, Apple Acres Shelties, died in
December 2015 while Janet Induni passed away in January 2016. Both Toni and Locklyn joined ASSA in 1997; Janet,
in 2003. May you rest in peace.
Locklyn Guzman had been selected to judge Futurity at the 2018 ASSA National. With her untimely passing, the
Futurity assignment has been passed to Jennie Hynes who was next in line based on number of votes received.
Best wishes to all for a happy, healthy, and successful 2016.

Who Are Your Local AR’s?
By David Calderwood
There are many animal welfare groups advocating for the humane treatment and ownership of animals,
such as the National Animal Interest Alliance (NAIA) and the Sportsman’s and Owners’ Voting Alliance
(SAOVA). However, the voices of those with multi-million dollar budgets like the Humane Society of the
United States HSUS), People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and others who support the
abolishment of all animal use and ownership are often heard the loudest. It is imperative that we support
our smaller, grass roots animal welfare groups like the NAIA and SAOVA which strive to promote the
welfare of our pets as well as defend our rights of ownership or we will lose that privilege.
To win any fight it is vital to know the opposition. In the 2014 Summer/Fall edition of the Bulletin Board, I
described and provided an overview of the two distinct groups of animal rights extremists: advocates who
demonstrate in the streets and the executives of large animal rights groups like the HSUS and PETA. In
this article I will focus on the local advocates with extremist views whom I refer to as “ARs”.
Local AR advocates are not representative of all advocates, some of whom are moderate in their views
and beliefs about the AR agenda. They all do, however, provide a formidable challenge to the grass roots
organizations working locally to defend our rights. In order to successfully oppose them, it is helpful to
understand their mindset and how they to react to certain words and subjects.
I have witnessed a number of common characteristics in the extremist ARs with whom I have become
acquainted that I believe are representative of many local ARs around the nation. It is advantageous to
understand how they think and tend to react to certain subjects and to certain words so that you can
respond to them effectively. Knowing their characteristics may help you to deal with them interpersonally
and in public meetings. Keep in mind that this is a generalization, and that there are always exceptions to
the rule!
General characteristics of ARs
Intelligent: Tend to be intelligent and well spoken.
Emotional: Arguments and conclusions are usually emotion-driven rather than based on rational
thinking.
Judgmental: Demonstrate a judgmental attitude toward those with opposing views.
Inflexible: Possess fixed rather than flexible attitudes and opinions.
Obsessive: Have unhealthy, obsessive views about animal rescue (e.g., are unable to say no to
another rescue animal).
Angry: Tend to approach those with conflicting opinions with anger, negativity, hostility and have a
negative view of mankind.
Many AR’s I have encountered hold animals in equal or higher esteem than humans. They tend to believe
that humankind is the greatest blight upon the earth and these attitudes are similar to those of extremist
environmentalists. In fact, there is often a great deal of overlap among the environmental and animal rights
movements.
ARs tend to oppose animal ownership as they believe “ownership” promotes and allows for the abuse of
owned animals. Although they understand that we need to bear responsibility for the animals currently in
our possession, they oppose intentional breeding and feel that domestic animals should be allowed to
become extinct. They feel ownership implies the right to make daily decisions for the animals we own,
including life and death choices. Because most AR’s see humankind in a negative light, they contend that
humans are not competent to make such decisions.
Page 6
Winter 2015 — 2016
This is an extremely important thing to understand: AR’s also have a very encompassing definition of
“animal abuse”. For example, they feel abuse includes normally accepted animal husbandry, housing
practices and training methods. Imagine if your local animal control officer was an AR and decided that
your training methods constitute abuse, or that crating a dog is an act of cruelty!
The fact that AR’s anthropomorphize and believe animals are on an equal or higher level than humans
leads them to believe humans should never force an animal to do anything the creature would not do of
its own volition. Therefore they do not tend to “train” animals or “do” the things we animal welfare people
do with our animals. Their lack of training experience means they have few or no credentials involving
animal behavior; yet they are still highly judgmental and contend that they are animal experts. Their
extreme emotionality, inflexible attitudes and obsessive nature leads them to be highly judgmental and
often angry toward others who disagree with their perception of the human/animal relationship. When you
demonstrate the fallacy of their thinking, many of them feel their core beliefs are being attacked and react
with hostility.
How can this knowledge be used in disagreements and policy conversations?
Keep in mind that the ARs have a deep love for animals as well as a negative view of humankind. Their
fixed and inflexible views often manifest in uncompromising positions when presenting their views to
public officials. This rigidity often results in predictable arguments during policy discussions and testimony
to elected officials. Their opinions tend to be emotionally based and their conclusions often are based on
their definition of abuse rather than fact. This can make reasoning with them a challenge and many times,
impossible.
The obsessive and judgmental nature of AR extremists leads to a conviction that “the end
justifies the means”. Therefore they will go to great lengths and often make untrue statements
to achieve their agenda. Because of their emotional style and often unrealistic goals they
sometimes make incriminating public statements about themselves that should be entered
into public record. Evidence of those statements can and may be needed in the future and
should be documented.
Digital communication/media that demonstrates their extreme behavior (protesting the local circus or dog
show, hostile email etc.) should be copied and saved. Make sure the time and date of the communication
are also documented so that facts are verifiable.
Elected officials are responsible for making public decisions and are held responsible and
accountable for those decisions. Therefore unless those elected officials make decisions
with their emotions, like the AR’s, those officials will make data-driven decisions, and not on
the emotional outburst of a particularly small minority of constituents. When giving testimony,
the AR’s will give emotional testimony. Therefore if you stick to the verifiable facts and
make it easy for those officials to verify those facts, you are far more likely to prevail.
When engaging an opponent it is vitally important to understand how he or she thinks and behaves. You
are more likely to succeed in pre-emptive testimony or effective counter testimony when you can predict
their tactics and anticipate their reactions.
This is not only a fight for the ability to breed and for the very ownership of our beloved dogs but a fight for
the future of our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren!
I wish to thank Dr. Grace Bullock for her input with later drafts and edits by Linda Nicholas
M.D.

2015 NAIA Annual Conference
October 31—November 1, 2015
Orlando, Florida
In late October I attended the National Animal Interest Alliance (NAIA) Conference in Orlando, Florida. I
am grateful to the ASSA for the opportunity to have done so. The conference consisted of two days of
presentations by representatives from Sea World, Ringling Brothers Circus, rodeos, cattle breeding, dog
breeding and the AKC. There were geneticists and various experts providing information in many areas of
animal husbandry. The subject of dog trafficking was also explored.
The premise of the NAIA is that the best means to successfully fight the animal rights activists is for all
groups which have a mutual dependence on animals to band together to fight the activists. This would
seem to be the only means to approximate the power and financial means of HSUS and PETA.
The threat of losing our rights to have relationships with any animals is real and imminent.
I would urge all of our members to support NAIA practically by re-education of the public and through
financial support.
The ASSA has been at the forefront of dog clubs involved with the NAIA. It is my hope that this support
continues by our organization and by our members as individuals.
Respectfully,
Julie Desy

2016 Junior Handling Clinic
Friday, April 22, 2016
All Junior Handlers ages 9 through 18 are welcome and encouraged to participate in the annual handling
clinic on Friday night, April 22, 2016.
Professional handlers and breeders will be on hand to guide you through the basics and the fine points to
help you show your dog to the best of your ability. Please see the schedule below for details:

One hour after conformation judging, all handlers (ages 9—18, novice, intermediate, and open levels)
will gather in the main ring. Junior aged handlers (ages 9—11) will work together as one group while
intermediate and senior aged juniors (ages 12—18) will work as another. Both groups will work on
handling skills for one hour.

After handling practice, we’ll gather again as a whole group to enjoy a pizza party and “mentor
summit.” You and your mentors can share your mentoring experiences. If someone mentors you, tell
us what helps and why. If you mentor somebody else, let us know why you mentor and specifically
what you’re doing to help others.
There is no fee for the handling clinic or pizza party but advanced registration is required using form
located on ASSA 2016 Nevada National Specialty “Download Forms” section.

Alamo Area Shetland Sheepdog Club pays tribute to Alane L. Gomez
Barbara Wright presents Alane L. Gomez with a plaque
honoring her long time dedication to the Shetland Sheepdog
and the sport of dogs, at the Club Christmas party.
Alane is a long time member of the Alamo Area Shetland Sheepdog Club, serving as President and most recently as
our long time Secretary. In the 62 years of the Classic’s Shelties, there have been more than 15 champions and over
75 performance titles earned, including Obedience, Rally, Agility, Tracking and Herding.
Alane has been a member of the American Shetland Sheepdog Assn. since 1965, one of only seven 50 year
members in that prestigious category. She is an AKC judge, has judged all over the world and is one of the few judges
certified to judge Conformation through Best in Show as well as Obedience and Rally.
The Club was pleased to honor her this past year for her dedication to shelties and the sport of dogs.

2016 ASSA Nevada National Symposium “Straight Talk”
This year’s program is a special opportunity for Sheltie fanciers to hear directly from experienced people in our breed who will
respond to your questions concerning breeding practices, showing and handling, and judging.
The Symposium is scheduled for Tuesday morning, April 19, 2016. The program is a moderated panel discussion, organized
into three 55 minute segments, and is approximately three hours in length. There will be a 5-10 minute break between
segments. The program will be followed immediately by a box-lunch where attendees can meet and continue discussion with
the panelists.
During each segment the panelists will respond to questions which are of interest to the fancy and give their individual
perspectives in their answers.
The Program Moderator is Al Bianchi. The members of the three panels are:
Handlers: Julie Desy, Becky Johnson and Dottie Adkins
Breeders: Sylvia Calderwood, Lisa Graser and Linda Nicholas
Judges: Marjorie Tuff, Brian Cleveland and Janice Leonard
You are invited and encouraged to submit questions for the panelists to address in advance. Keep questions short and single
subject and be sure to identify which question is for which panel. Send your questions to Al Bianchi, k4ux@cox.net. Questions
will be accepted through the date of closing of show entries.
The cost of the Symposium is $25 per person and includes lunch.
Use the Master Reservation Form on the 2016 Nevada National “downloads” site to reserve your seat for this exceptional
opportunity!

AKC Meet The Breeds
February 13, 2016
New York City, New York
I would like to thank the wonderful people who helped with the Sheltie booth this year. We had a
huge amount of interest and turnout by our Sheltie people. The booth looked great thanks to our
booth designer, Jen Milani. So glad Meet the Breeds fever has caught on because it really is a fun
event. This year because of the numbers we had in the booth, we were all able to have a lunch break
and time to view the other booths, vendors and agility competition going on at the same site. Would
also like to extend my thanks to Sharon Parrish for her huge support and enthusiasm about this
event. We had a great public turnout and much enthusiasm for our dogs!
Again many thanks to the individuals pictured below for assisting in the booth. If you see them in
your travels, please take a moment to thank them for their dedication to our breed and this event.
Sincerely,
Jennie Hynes

SPORTSMANSHIP & ETHICS
The start of 2016 brings with it a new AKC show calendar, club activities, and owner-breeder plans for their dogs. The
AKC Code of Sportsmanship and ASSA Guidelines for Ethical Behavior are reminders for everyone on the values,
principles, and ethics that serve Sheltie fanciers and all dog owners in pursuing their interests.
AKC Code of Sportsmanship
PREFACE: The sport of purebred dog competitive events dates prior to 1884, the year of AKC’s birth.
Shared values of those involved in the sport include principles of sportsmanship. They are practiced in all
sectors of our sport: conformation, performance and companion. Many believe that these principles of
sportsmanship are the prime reason why our sport has thrived for over one hundred years. With the belief that
it is useful to periodically articulate the fundamentals of our sport, this code is presented.















Sportsmen respect the history, traditions and integrity of the sport of purebred dogs.
Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous competition, as well
as winning and losing with grace.
Sportsmen refuse to compromise their commitment and obligation to the sport of purebred dogs by
injecting personal advantage or consideration into their decisions or behavior.
The sportsman judge judges only on the merits of the dogs and considers no other factors.
The sportsman judge or exhibitor accepts constructive criticism.
The sportsman exhibitor declines to enter or exhibit under a judge where it might reasonably appear that
the judge’s placements could be based on something other than the merits of the dogs.
The sportsman exhibitor refuses to compromise the impartiality of a judge.
The sportsman respects the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations and policies governing the sport of purebred
dogs.
Sportsmen find that vigorous competition and civility are not inconsistent and are able to appreciate the
merit of their competition and the effort of competitors.
Sportsmen welcome, encourage and support newcomers to the sport.
Sportsmen will deal fairly with all those who trade with them.
Sportsmen are willing to share honest and open appraisals of both the strengths and weaknesses of their
breeding stock.
Sportsmen spurn any opportunity to take personal advantage of positions offered or bestowed upon them.
Sportsmen always consider as paramount the welfare of their dog.
Sportsmen refuse to embarrass the sport, the American Kennel Club, or
themselves while taking part in the sport.

ASSA Guidelines for Ethical Behavior
These recommendations are meant as guidelines for what the American Shetland
Sheepdog Association (ASSA) considers ethical dog-related practices in the areas of
breeding, selling, buying, and exhibiting the Shetland Sheepdog.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE BREEDER/SELLER:
1) The ultimate goal of the responsible breeder should be to improve the breed by producing attractive, healthy,
puppies with good temperaments, whether for pet or show.
2) Breeders should have a basic knowledge of genetics, the breed, dog breeding in general, and the specific faults and
virtues of their chosen genetic lines. They should also be aware of potential health problems, associated both with
the breed itself, and the specific lines. This is to encourage improvement of the breed by using top quality stock,
along with extensive, researched knowledge.
3) A breeder should be discriminating in the placement of his stock. A breeder should not sell to, or aid in selling a
Sheltie to any person who he, or she, has reason to believe will not provide proper care and environment, or who
may use the dog in a fashion which is detrimental to the dog itself, or the breed.
4) It is recommended that breeders not sell puppies under the age of eight (8) weeks and/or without proper,
documented, immunization and health protection for their age.
5) Breeders should be honest and forthright in answering questions pertaining to their Shelties.
6) Breeders should recommend future immunization and worming schedules, as well as ways to deal with various
health and/or behavioral problems that might occur. Breeders should also inform new owners of any health
clearances that have been performed on one or both of the parents.
7) The ASSA encourages all Sheltie owners that breed Shelties to assume more responsibility for dogs produced
throughout their lives rather than just until the first sale.
8) Breeders should maintain the best possible health, safety, cleanliness and veterinary care for their animals, as well
as proper nutrition and socialization; and should pass these recommended measures along to new owners.
9) All agreements should be in writing, and be clearly understood by all parties.
10) Breeding arrangements should never be established which would encourage the pet buyer to undertake a breeding
program. If a "breeder" does not have the time, facility or desire to themselves have a litter out of a particular brood
matron, that dog should not be passed to a pet buyer just to produce puppies.
11) Responsible breeders should require the spaying/neutering of all non-breeding animals and follow-up should be
done to ensure that this aspect of the contract has been fulfilled.
BREEDING ANIMALS:
1) Shelties used for breeding should conform as closely as possible to the breed standard.
2) Breeding animals should be screened and clear of discoverable genetic defects prior to breeding.
3) The following is a partial list of possible screening recommendations:
 Eyes certified normal.
 Hips clear.
 Thyroid tested.
 Males should be entire (monorchids and/or cryptorchids should not be used.)
 Dogs with questionable temperaments should not be used for breeding.
 Dogs on medication intended to alter the dog's physical or mental condition should not be used for breeding.

NON-COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY:
1) A responsible breeder prohibits the sale of animals or the provision of stud services/brood matrons to commercial
operations, including puppy mills, pet shops, brokers, laboratories, auctions, raffles, or contest giveaways.
2)
Motivation for breeding the Shetland Sheepdog should be the creation and improvement of the breed, rather than
solely for financial gain.
Winter 2015 — 2016
Page 17
ASSA Guidelines for Ethical Behavior concluded
AKC RULES COMPLIANCE:
1) Complete and accurate records must be kept; and those necessary forwarded to new owners.
2) Breeders agree to abide by all AKC rules and regulations, whether pertaining to breeding, exhibiting, record-keeping
or any other aspect of purebred dog ownership.
3) Breeders will breed only AKC-registered dogs.
EDUCATION:
1) Sheltie owners should encourage public education, represent the breed honestly to prospective buyers, and help
people to make informed canine-related decisions.
2) Breeders should make themselves available to the purchaser after the sale has been consummated to help with
education counseling, grooming and other care questions as well as solving behavioral problems.
3) Breeders should make available to fellow breeders any information they have that might aid in that breeder's efforts
to improve the breed.
4) ASSA members should be an example of leadership and outreach to encourage proper ethical behavior.
SPORTSMANSHIP:
1) Maligning of others or others' dogs is inappropriate. Good sportsmanship is appropriate at all times.
In general, all dog owners have a responsibility to their canine companions to provide proper care and humane treatment
at all times, whether in a multiple or single dog household. Proper care and humane treatment includes adequate and
nutritious diet, clean water, adequate exercise, clean comfortable living conditions, regular veterinary care, kind and
responsive human companionship, and training for appropriate behavior. Dogs should not be kept in circumstances or
numbers where all of these needs cannot be adequately fulfilled.

CONTROL Dogs Needed for a Gallbladder Mucocele Study
at NC State College of Veterinary Medicine
NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine is looking for control dogs to participate in a study
examining altered lipid metabolism in dogs with gallbladder mucoceles (GBM).
What does participation involve? Owners need to be willing to bring their dog to NCSU for a one time
visit. During the visit their dog will undergo a brief gallbladder ultrasound examination (no sedation
required). If the dog is found to qualify for the study based on this ultrasound examination, an ACTH
stimulation test will be performed and blood and urine samples will be collected. These are very safe tests.
Diagnostic tests performed on study participants will be paid for by a study grant.
We are looking for 5 more apparently healthy Shetland sheepdogs that are
≥ 10 years of age and are either spayed female or castrated male.
Dogs cannot be currently undergoing treatment for hypothyroidism or treatment with steroids or other
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Please contact our Clinical Studies Core coordinator Lyndy Harden-Plumley if you have a dog that you are
willing to have us screen for inclusion in the study as a control. lbharden@ncsu.edu or 919-513-6384.
OFA Health Survey—OFA Health Survey
Dear ASSA Members:
Take a few minutes to go to www.offa.org/surveys/survey_sheltie.html and complete the Shetland Sheepdog health
survey. The OFA Health Survey is one of the few ways researchers can identify which breeds and which problems
deserve their attention and money. The data collected from this survey also help to determine which studies receive
funding from ASSA and the AKC Health Foundation. Our problems can only be addressed if we let the world know
what they are, so please go to the OFA Website and complete the Shetland Sheepdog Health Survey!
Sincerely,
ASSA Health Committee

Notice on Genetic Diseases in Shelties
Updated August 2015
Concerned breeders of Shetland Sheepdogs are striving to breed healthy Shelties and decrease the incidence of
heritable diseases in the breed. Hip dysplasia, thyroid disease, eye diseases, dermatomyositis (Sheltie Skin
Syndrome), von Willebrand’s disease (vWD), gallbladder mucoceles and epilepsy are some of the known health
problems of the breed. Although these problems are NOT COMMON in the breed, the Board of Directors of the
American Shetland Sheepdog Association (ASSA) recommends that questions about the health of the dog and its
relatives be asked when inquiring about the purchase of a puppy or adult, use of a stud dog and/or the acceptance of a
brood bitch. Does the Sheltie (adult or puppy) or its relatives have any of the above mentioned problems? Questions
should also be asked about abnormal tooth alignment, missing teeth, and cryptorchidism (retained testicle).
Tests are available for many potentially heritable health problems. Minimum health testing of breeding stock is
recommended by the ASSA through the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program, www.caninehealthinfo.org/.
(For specific information on Shetland Sheepdogs, see: www.caninehealthinfo.org/brdreqs.html?breed=SS ). Many of
the test results for individual dogs can be found in the database of the Orthopedic Foundation For Animals (OFA)
website: www.offa.org.
No animal (dog or human) is perfect and free of any genetic abnormality. The ASSA is NOT advising you not to buy a
puppy or breed to a stud dog if these conditions exist, but wants puppy buyers and breeders to be aware of genetic
problems in the breed so that informed decisions can be made when buying or planning a breeding.
Dermatomyositis Research Update - Genetic Testing Now Available
Researchers at Clemson University have identified genetic variants in 3 genes that are highly associated with
dermatomyositis. Certain combinations of alleles at these 3 genes cause an increased risk for development of the
disease, while other combinations are rarely observed in affected dogs. A manuscript describing the research will be
submitted for publication in 2016. Collection of DNA of affected dogs is ongoing. If you participated in the research
through submission of a sample from an affected or healthy dog to Clemson University or Texas A&M University, and
would like to know your dog’s results, please contact Jacquelyn Evans at jacquee@clemson.edu . Results are not
available for all participants because not all samples could be used.
In continuation of this research, we are now collecting cheek swabs from unaffected Collies and Shetland Sheepdogs*
born before February 2008 or before. We will generate genotypes for the 3 genes and provide them to their owners.
Participation is free and confidential. Only two dogs per owner will be accepted. In addition, genetic testing is also
available for younger dogs for $180/dog. To participate, please contact Jacquelyn Evans at jacquee@clemson.edu.
For additional information: www.clemsoncaninegenetics.com/genetictesting.htm.
*Funding for testing of older Shelties is through a grant from the American Shetland Sheepdog Association Foundation.

Investigation of Bladder Cancer in the Shetland Sheepdog
Updated February, 2016
Canine invasive bladder cancer, also known as transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the bladder, is a devastating
tumor that plagues senior dogs from all breeds. More than 20,000 dogs are thought to develop TCC each year with
approximately 50% of them showing spread of the disease to other organs. Standard treatments can extend the life
of a diagnosed dog for more than a year but there is no cure for the disease. The Ostrander Laboratory at the
National Human Genome Research Institute at NIH, in collaboration with the Purdue Comparative Oncology
Program at Purdue University, are working to identify the genetic variants that either confer risk for developing TCC
or enhance tumor growth and metastasis. Last year our labs identified a mutation in the BRAF gene present in 85%
of TCC tumors, including 100% of the Shetland sheepdog tumors tested. This exact mutation has been found in
many human cancers including melanomas, colon cancer, thyroid cancers, leukemias, and even human bladder
cancers. This finding reminds us just how similar our dogs are to us.
In the course of our studies we found that the BRAF mutation can be identified in urine from affected dogs. This
could lead to a non-invasive diagnosis method for breeds at risk of developing TCC of the bladder, such as the
Shetland sheepdog. Prescreening studies underway at the Purdue Comparative Oncology program will help to
determine how early in disease progression such a diagnosis is possible. It is predicted that early diagnosis and
early treatment will improve the prognosis for all dogs with TCC.
In addition to the activating BRAF mutation, we have identified and are in the process of categorizing additional
tumor-specific gene variants that interrupt functions important in cancer development and progression. By
grouping these genes in terms of interacting pathways and biological function, such as cell growth and tissue
invasion, we hope to determine additional treatment foci for clinical applications. We are also comparing the
expression of genes in the tumor with regions of the genome that are associated with disease susceptibility in at
risk breeds.
Our genome wide association studies have identified two distinct regions of the genome that appear to hold cancer
-causing mutations in breeds at risk for TCC. One of these regions is specific to the Shetland sheepdog. We have
now sequenced the complete genome of a Sheltie, a Westie, and a Scottie that were diagnosed with TCC of the
bladder. This allows us to leverage the association studies with a much denser screening of genetic variants to look
for mutations that could cause the disease.
It is important for us to maintain current health status data on the senior shelties that make up the control group
of our study. If you have donated a sample from your healthy old dog, or you have a dog that recently turned 10,
we would love to hear from you. Please update your dog’s health status with the short survey on our website, or
you can send an email to dog_genome@mail.nih.gov and let us know if your dog is still healthy or if he or she was
diagnosed with cancer. If your dog received a diagnosis of cancer since their sample was submitted, we ask that
you please fax or mail the veterinarian’s report to us.
We are always looking for more participants for the study so please contact our Samples Manger, whose contact
information is listed below, if you have a Sheltie that has been diagnosed with TCC of the bladder or if you have a
Sheltie over the age of 10 that has never had cancer. You will receive a kit with a one page consent form, return
address label, a pair of vials for collecting 5-10 cc of blood at your veterinarian’s office, and instructions for
handling the collected sample. The collection kit is provided in a small cardboard mailer tube approved for shipping
biological materials by the postal service without ice. Your participation in the study and any information you
provide us will remain confidential.

ASSA Futurity Rules and Information
1. The Futurity Stakes are open to litters where the breeder of record is an
ASSA member. Each ASSA member/Member household may nominate
only ten (10) owned or co-owned bitches per Futurity year. The bitch’s
nomination must be postmarked on the envelope before the litter is born.
The Futurity is held on the day before the National and each puppy must be
entered in a regular class at the National. Put "Futurity Class" and age
division in the box on the entry form for "Additional Class". There is no
additional entry fee for the futurity class.
2. Starting with the 1995 Futurity, there is no ineligible zone. All litters
nominated for bitches that will whelp after the closing date of the prior
Futurity and before the beginning 18 month date of the next Futurity will be
added to the next Futurity by extending the 12 to 18 month class to include
the date in the ineligible zone. If a bitch is due right on the borderline dates,
you may keep her eligible in both futurities by entering her in both and
paying for both. Based on her actual whelping date she will then remain
eligible in one or the other Futurity. Occasionally, the opposite happens
when Futurity year dates overlap. The same concept is applied - she may
be nominated for both years and the puppies may be nominated for both
Futurities also by paying double fees at each level. However, you must
chose which Futurity you will show in. You can only show a puppy in one
Futurity. If you decide to show the puppy in the 6 - 9 month class you may
not show that puppy again in the 12 - 18 month class the following year.
3. Nominations of bitches bred may be made on the ASSA Bulletin Board or
ASSA Website form, or a 3” x 5” card, if at all possible. If necessary, you
may submit nominations on any piece of paper. You must include Show
Location, Show date/year, Dam, Date bred, Breeder(s) and your complete
address with phone number. Upon receipt of your bitch’s nomination, a
form will be mailed to you that will include your 3-month and 6-month

reminders. This will be your only reminder. The Sire must be specified by
the 6-month nomination. The fee of $5.00 per dam must be enclosed with
the original nomination and a fee of $3.00 per puppy is due by 3 months
with the exact whelping date and sex of each puppy kept nominated. A
$7.00 fee is due by 6 months for each puppy you wish to keep nominated,
and you must include the pup’s full AKC registered name, sex, and new
owner (if any). Entries in the 6-9 months class must arrive at least 30 days
prior to judging. All 6-month nominations must include AKC litter number
and proposed name, the name can be changed at a later date but must
have the same AKC registration number.
4. The Futurity will consist of six classes: 6-9 months; 9-12 months;
12-18 months for dogs and bitches. Winners of all above classes will
compete for Best in Futurity.
5. Fees received for each class, less 30% (25% for expenses and 5% for the
breeder of the Best In Futurity winner) will be used as prize money in that
class. If divided by sex, money for that age group will be halved. Prize
money will be divided as follows: 1st - 40%; 2nd - 30%; 3rd - 20%; 4th - 10%.
Prizes revised if less than four (4) entries in a class. All prizes are paid to
the handler in the ring. A special award of 5% of the total prize money will
be paid, for each Futurity, to the ASSA member breeder of the Best in
Futurity Winner. All nominations, correspondence and checks (payable to
ASSA) are to be sent to the Chairperson:
Kathryn Hensley
800 East Franciscan Drive
Crown Point, IN 46307
(219) 661-1182
kathrynhensley@prodigy.net
All money paid is irrevocable, with these exceptions:— overpayments made in error & nominations arriving too early or late for the age of the class. Money is
not returned for "misses." Members recruited to judge Futurity will have their money returned upon request. Requests must be made 30 days before the
Futurity date. MAKE CHECKS PAYABLE TO ASSA.
On checks for the original nomination of the bitch, please write the bitch’s AKC name. On 3- and 6-month nominations please write the Futurity litter number
assigned. Also on 6-month nomination, add COLOR OF PUPPY.
Please do not send Certified Mail or Air Express letters. Remember, eligibility is determined by the postmark, not delivery date (except for the Futurity closing
date of 1 month prior to judging).
Canadian members, please send your Futurity fee by Postal Money Order/US funds.
Whenever there is an NSF check, the nomination for a litter will be ineligible until the check is made good and all bank charges incurred by ASSA are
reimbursed.
If you wish to know that your 3-month and 6-month Futurity nomination arrived safely, please include your e-mail address or a self-addressed, stamped
postcard or envelope with those nominations. The initial nomination is acknowledged by the letter returned to you, which contains tear sheets for 3- and
6-month nominations. If you do not receive that letter, the Chairperson never received your original nomination.
