More Canadians than ever heading to
U.S. to fly for less in 2013
OTTAWA — Half of Canadian travellers have gone or plan to go to the U.S.
to buy cheaper airline tickets, says data
released from the Hotel Association of
Canada’s (HAC) 2013 Canadian Travel
Intentions Survey.
While 18% of HAC 2013 survey respondents said they travelled to the
U.S. for cheaper airline tickets in 2012
(up 3% over last year’s survey), 32%
said they plan on doing so in 2013. The
highest numbers of cross-border airline

ticket shoppers come from Ontario and
British Columbia, at 23% (up 4%), and
in the 18-24 year old age category (32%).
An alarming 61% of respondents
said they knew people who travelled
to the U.S. in 2012 to purchase cheaper
airline tickets.
“Almost 20% of all Canadian travellers, including a quarter from our largest province, are travelling to the U.S. for
deals on airline tickets. This represents a
lot of Canadian dollars going to the U.S.
to buy cheaper airline tickets,” said Tony
Pollard, President of the Hotel Association of Canada. “This trend is the result
of high airport rents, Air Traveller Security charges, NAV CANADA fees and
airport improvement fees and amounts
to millions of Canadian travellers finding the price of Canadian tickets more
expensive than the cost of driving to the
U.S. and flying from airports like Buffalo, Detroit, Plattsburg, Bellingham, Bangor, Seattle, Syracuse or Grand Forks.”
The HAC believes that the travel and
tourism sector requires a fair tax and regulatory regime that allows it to compete
on a level playing field with the rest of the
world which underscores the importance
of a comprehensive federal review of the
aviation cost structure in Canada.
The survey of Canadian travellers is
the ninth annual Canadian Travel Intentions study undertaken by the Hotel
Association of Canada. This survey was
fielded by Opinion Search and defines
a traveller as someone who will stay at
least one night in a hotel, motel or resort. The online survey was conducted

American Airlines,
US Airways merger
‘problematic’ says
business travel group
WASHINGTON, DC — The Business
Travel Coalition (BTC) has responded
with concern regarding the news of
board approvals of an $11 billion pro-
diminished service to small and midsize communities,” stated BTC Chairman Kevin Mitchell. “To be clear,
there is benefit in a financially viable
air transportation system. However,
previous mergers have already enabled seat capacity cuts, higher fares
and billions of dollars in fees for ancillary services resulting in a financially strengthening industry. As such,
consumer harms from this merger are
indeed exacerbated, as there are no
substantial countervailing consumer
bought in Canada on aircanada.com
or the agency website.
“Air Canada’s new Lowest Price
Guarantee means customers can be
certain they will always get the best
price for their Air Canada flight at
aircanada.com. With the proliferation
of travel websites the market can be
confusing, so to make it easy for customers and give them confidence they
are getting the lowest price available

cover our entire global network. Our

posal from American Airlines’ parent
AMR Corporation and US Airways
Group Inc. to merge their third and
fifth largest U.S. airlines respectively.
The transaction would create the
country’s and world’s largest carrier
by passenger traffic and would require
various approvals from the U.S. Departments of Justice (DOJ) and Transportation (DOT) as well the EC’s DG
COMP. If governmental analyses don’t
force a regulatory tarmac delay, then
decisions could be expected in some
four to six months.
“From a consumer standpoint —

to offset the negative impacts of this
proposed merger that include reduced
competition, higher fares and fees and
benefits,” added Mitchell.

Dallyce Macas
launches éminence
Canada to represent
premium brands
TORONTO — Industry veteran Dallyce Macas has launched éminence
Canada, a company that aims to represent premium and experiential travel
brands in the Canadian marketplace.
Macas said offering international
tour companies, DMCs and boutique
properties integrated sales, marketing and a PR solution in Canada is
important. “Many great travel operators believe that servicing the Canadian travel industry from their New
York or Los Angeles based sales team
is good enough. But Canadians like to
build a relationship locally.
“It is vitally important to understand the unique differences between
U.S. and Canadian buyers. There is a
tremendous growth opportunity in
Canada if a brand takes the time to
develop and foster local relationships.”
Macas introduced to the Canadian
market 20 years ago a luxury travel
and concierge service, Attaché.
She said a key qualifier for any travel
company seeking representation by
éminence is its willingness to embrace
the travel trade.
“Without a strong endorsement
from travel agents and wholesalers,
foreign travel brands are never going
to reach their full potential in Canada.”

SPOTLIGHT LUXURY TRAVEL
Positano, Amalfi coast, Italy
Get the sale, wow clients with a special
trip, says Gateways International
by Kathryn Folliott
Quality luxury travel isn’t something
that can be bought off the shelf, says
Gateways International’s director,
marketing and operations, Talia May.
“There is a real art to a quality, tailor-made tour that requires agents
listen to clients’ needs and desires,
tastes and likes and really put together
something that suits them,” says May.
“After all, they’re investing an appreciable amount of money and time —
why not get it just right and really wow
your clients with something special?”
Gateways International is there to
help, she adds. The primary mandate
of the company’s outside sales staff is
to educate travel agents on the differences between an escorted tour (“we
do offer a hand-picked variety”, notes
May), versus a tailor-made FIT package. “The difference is a customized,
unique journey. We find people who
are looking for true luxury, are looking
for something very specific and want
it their way. Our packages are full of
Spotlight_LuxuryTravel_Feb21.indd 17
value and you can trust that after 26
years in business, we know our destinations inside and out.”
Every Gateways International package is custom-made for each individual no matter when they want to travel
or how short or long the itinerary, and
private transfers are always included.
Hotel categories range from three-star
superior to five-star luxury and tours
can be shared or completely private
with their own personal guide.
“We handle all the logistics so your
client’s journey is seamless. And with
commissions of 12%, why not have
us take the headache and hassle out
of trying to arrange everything yourself?” says May.
One stand-out in the recently released 2013 Europe and Mediterranean catalogue, the company’s Deluxe
Prague, Vienna and Budapest is a true
luxury itinerary, says May, with private
transfers, first-class train tickets and
fully private touring.
“Anyone can go to Central Europe,
but a deluxe cultural and sophisticated tour is something different.
Pricing starts at $2,995 per person,
double occupancy.”
Gateways International specializes
in Europe, the Mediterranean, Morocco, Israel and Jordan as well as Central
and South America. Call 1-800-2680900 for details.

Scheduled ferry
services begin
between Anguilla,
St. Martin airport
ferry terminal
The Anguilla Tourist Board has announced the launch of scheduled sea
shuttle service between the island and
the ferry terminal adjacent to the airport on neighbouring St. Martin.
The Calypso Charters service will
operate 10 daily roundtrip departures
between the islands, starting at 7:30
a.m. and ending at 10 p.m. The service complements the current privatecharter offering by Calypso.
Large jets are not permitted to land
in Anguilla, and most Canadians fly
into nearby St. Martin.
Upon arrival, they will be met in the
Arrivals Hall by uniformed Calypso
staff and transferred by mini-van to
the Ferry Terminal five minutes away.
The journey to Anguilla takes some
20 minutes by covered speedboat.
As part of the expanded ease-of-access to Anguilla, the ferry terminal in
St. Martin has recently been expanded
and improved.
Fares are US$65 per person each
way, with children three to 12 paying
half-price and those under three travelling free of charge.
“This scheduled sea shuttle service
is great news for Canadians planning a trip to our lovely island,” says
Dale Pusching of the Anguilla Tourist
Board in Canada.

Accommodations can vary from

Each unit is complete with a

private bedrooms. The value and
amenities offered by condo resorts
help to make planning a family vacation to Hawaii easy for any lifestyle, says Aston.
“A condominium resort has advantages specifically for families
because they are typically more
affordable than hotel rooms, and
fully equipped kitchens provide a

break from expensive restaurant
meals, a cost most often overlooked when travelling,” says the
company. “Those savings can be
used for activities during their stay
because we want people to explore
the islands together and enjoy their
family time.”
Families can also spread out in the
comfort of living/dining room areas
to enjoy games, movies and meals,
while flexible sleeping arrangements
with individual bedrooms and multiple bathrooms allow for comfort and
privacy. Washers and dryers allow
families to pack lightly and handle
laundry needs during their stay.
Condo resorts are also ideal for
family reunions, with generous spaces eliminating the need to book multiple hotel rooms to accommodate
large families and their guests.
Not to mention that the poolside pavilions and barbeque areas
are an excellent setting for family
and friends to bond over meals and
cocktails. Extensive and diverse onsite recreational amenities such as a
swimming pool, jet spa, sauna, tennis court, exercise facilities or putting greens cater to the tastes of every family member.
Aston has 16 condominium resorts in Hawaii on four different islands, with more condo properties in
Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. For more

Geneva Convention
TALLAHASSEE — Canadians heading for Florida can thank the Geneva Convention, of all things, for
the Florida Department of Highway
Safety & Motor Vehicles suspending
the state’s recently enacted International Driving Permit requirement
pending further study.
International visitors who plan to
drive in Florida now need only a valid
driver’s license issued from their own
country.
Canadians had been lining up at
CAA offices when word of the requirement was reported this week.
During the 2012 legislative session, the Florida Legislature amended section 322.04, Florida Statutes,
to require visitors from outside the

United States to have an International Driving Permit in order to drive
lawfully in Florida. This change took
effect Jan. 1, 2013 but no one heard
about it until this week.
“It has come to the Department’s
attention that this requirement may
violate the Geneva Convention on
Road Traffic (1949), an international treaty to which the United States
is a signatory. Treaties to which the
United States is a party preempt
state laws in conflict with them,”
said a statement.
Therefore, the Florida Highway
Patrol will defer enforcement of
violations of the amended statutory
section until a final determination
of the alignment of the amendment
with the treaty can be made. Nonresident visitors to Florida who wish
to drive while here will be required
to have in their immediate possession a valid driver license issued in
his or her name from another state
or territory of the U.S. or from their
country of residence. However, the
FHP will not take enforcement action based solely on the lack of an
International Driving Permit.”
NOTES
Canadians up 4.2% to
Germany
According to figures from the German Federal Statistical Office, the
number of overnight stays by Canadian visitors in Germany from January to November 2012 rose by 4.2%
compared with the same period in
2011. During this period, Canadian
visitors spent a total of 591,148 overnights in accommodation establishments with more than 10 beds. Says
Regional Director for the GNTO in
the Americas Ricarda Lindner, “We
are delighted to yet again record an
increase in Canadians visiting Germany last year. It’s a great pleasure
to see them appreciate our country’s
great touristic diversity, which ranges from the excitement of our major
cities and their attractions and the
medieval charm of our hundreds of
small towns to the fun of all kinds of
outdoor activities, guided and selfguided countryside excursions to the
luxuries of old-world spas and more.”
