HIKI NO See page 6. A Transformative Meeting We’ve all sat through meetings that are pedestrian and even pointless. Today, I want to tell you about a transformative meeting, where community builders challenged PBS Hawaii to think bigger and aim higher – and were willing to back up Leslie Wilcox their challenge with support. PBS Hawaii The meeting started off with President and CEO business as usual. Alongside Robert Pennybacker, executive producer of our HIKI NO education project and weekly TV show, I made a pitch for continued funding. On the other side of the table: Joyce Stupski of the Stupski Family Fund of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, and Kelvin Taketa, President and CEO of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation. Both were early HIKI NO supporters. “HIKI NO Robert and I were out the probelongs in the pointing gram’s strides when Mrs. Stupski politely schools, not stopped us. outside the “I’ve read your report and I believe school day.” in this program – you don’t need to convince Kelvin Taketa me,” she said. “However, President and CEO Hawai‘i Community Foundation I see a very lean budget for a statewide program with more than 80 schools. That concerns me.” Mr. Taketa noted that HIKI NO doesn’t cost school participants a dime, but it is tough on their time. Teachers spend vacations and weekends getting trained in this New Literacy of digital media. Meanwhile, their often-overscheduled students work on HIKI NO stories after school and on weekends. School teams find and research a story in their community, and write, shoot, edit and produce a video using critical thinking, fairness and oral and written communications. Students must also meet national (adult) PBS journalism standards. That involves more time in learning by re-doing and refining. “HIKI NO belongs in the schools, not outside the school day,” Mr. Taketa said. Robert and I were quiet, plunged into thought. Could PBS Hawaii retain the independence and realworld deadlines of HIKI NO if it were embedded in state schools? And how could we afford the required curriculum development in alignment with new Common Core State Standards to make the case to the Hawaii State Department of Education? - executive producer Robert Pennybacker shares on-location HIKI NO production techniques with students from Lanai School Mrs. Stupski, a former special-education teacher in San Francisco, said, “Come back with a three-year proposal to make this happen. Don’t undercut yourself. Tell me what it will really cost.” As Robert says, “It was a turning point.” I’m pleased to share with you the result: The Stupski Family Fund of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation has awarded a three-year, $2.1 million grant to grow HIKI NO into the vision of being an elective class for middle and high schoolers across the state. We also found out that Hawaii DOE superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi is a fan of this plan and will support PBS Hawaii’s HIKI NO elective. When Joyce Stupski and Kelvin Taketa challenged HIKI NO to be more, they set the table for many more HIKI NO students. This strengthens learning and workforce development. And that’s the story of a transformative meeting of the minds, reverberating into the future for HIKI NO and for the benefit of schools and work places. The United States is the only country in the world that routinely condemns children to die in prison. This is the story of one of those children, now a young man, seeking a second chance in Florida. At age 15, Kenneth Young received four consecutive life sentences for a series of armed robberies. Imprisoned for more than a decade, he believed he would die behind bars. Now a Danish resident, director Mahdi Fleifel grew up in the Ain el-Helweh refugee camp in southern Lebanon, established in 1948 as a temporary refuge for exiled Palestinians. Today, the camp houses 70,000 people and is the hometown of generations. While the filmmaker’s childhood memories are surprisingly warm and humorous, his yearly visits reveal the increasing desperation of family and friends who remain trapped in psychological as well as political limbo. 11:30 PBS PREVIEWS: THE ROOSEVELTS (e) Cable Only Midnight CHARLIE ROSE 1:00 THE BUDDHA Family Court and later as Associate Judge and Chief Judge in the Intermediate Court of Appeals. “You don’t live your father’s life, you live your own life, and that’s what I’ve tried to do, without embarrassing him,” Jim says. 8:00 THE SEARCH FOR JOSIAH HENSON, THE MAN BEHIND THE STORY OF UNCLE TOM’S CABIN 9:00 THE BONES OF BADGER HOLE, A TIME TEAM AMERICA PRESENTATION 10:00 GREAT PERFORMANCES Pavarotti: A Voice for the Ages (e) 11:30 MUSIC VOYAGER Tokyo: A Feast for the Senses (e) Cable Only Midnight CHARLIE ROSE 1:00 POV A World Not Ours 2:30 PBS PREVIEWS: THE ROOSEVELTS 20 WEDNESDAY 7:30 LEAHEY & LEAHEY 8:00 MAGIC MOMENTS: THE BEST OF 50’S POP (e) 10:00 NA MELE TREASURES III (e) 11:00 LONG STORY SHORT WITH LESLIE WILCOX Jim Burns: His Own Man (e) 11:30 LEAHEY & LEAHEY (e) Cable Only Midnight CHARLIE ROSE 1:00 THE SEARCH FOR JOSIAH HENSON, THE MAN BEHIND THE STORY OF UNCLE TOM’S CABIN 2:00 THE BONES OF BADGER HOLE, A TIME TEAM AMERICA PRESENTATION 21 THURSDAY 7:30 HIKI NŌ Focus On Local Businesses See sidebar, page 6. 8:00 INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAII 9:00 PBS HAWAII PRESENTS Biography Hawaii: Maiki Aiu Lake (e) 10:00 SHIFT CHANGE Examine the little known stories of employee-owned businesses which compete successfully in today’s economy while providing secure, dignified jobs in democratic workplaces.
