Sports South Platte Sentinel Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014 Page 26 Caliche Lady Buffs earn berth in Class 2A State Tournament By Ken McDowell Sports Editor YUMA – The Caliche Lady Buffaloes sent a strong message to the rest of the Class 2A volleyball field with their performance Friday in the Region F Tournament in Yuma. The Lady Buffs took on the number 1 team in the state, Yuma, and pushed the Lady Indians to the limit on their own court in the opening round before losing in 5 games, 17-25, 27-25, 25-19, 1425, 18-16. Caliche then went on to play Rylie Lewis (left), Laci Burtard (center) and Josie Cartwright competed in the Class 4A State Gymnastics Meet Friday in Thornton represening Lone Star High School. Burtard placed 14th on the balance beam in the individual finals and 13th in the floor exercise. She also posted an All-Around score of 33.800 to place 16th in the team competition. (Courtesy Photo.) Even though Caliche did not win the regional championship, the Lady Buffs will still advance to the Class 2A State Tournament Thursday and Friday in the Denver Coliseum Caliche is 18-7 overall and the sixth seed in the 12-team tournament. In the match against Yuma Friday, the Lady Buffs supplied plenty of firepower at the net with 42 team kills, led by senior Shayln Johnson with 14, senior Rachael Edler followed with 9, junior Jordan Nelson 8, junior Brandi Vigil 7 and senior Jessica Taylor 4. Junior setter Jaedyn Lambrecht set up the Caliche attack with 38 assists. Johnson also had a solid match on the back row with 22 digs, Lambrecht 14, Edler 12, sophomores Taylor Huss and Kayla Zink 9 each, Nelson 7, vigil 4 and Huss 1. Edler had 4 stuff/blocks, Vigil 2 and Nelson and Taylor 1 each. Edler served 11 points with 2 aces, Zink served 11 points, Lambrecht 8 points, Huss 5 points with an ace, Johnson 4 points, Nelson 3 points with an ace and senior Leanna LeBlanc 1 point. In the win over Dayspring Christian, Johnson stayed strong on the attack again with 16 kills, Edler 13, Taylor 7, Nelson 6, Vigil 3 and Lambrecht 1. Lambrecht also had 44 assists. Johnson again led in digs with 18, Edler 15, Lambrecht 13, Huss 11, Zink 8, Nelson 5, Taylor 4, LeBlanc 2 and Vigil 1. Johnson and vigil had 2 stuffs each and 1 apiece for Edler and Taylor. Huss served 12 points with 3 aces, Zink 10 points, Lambrecht 9 points, Johnson 6 points, Nelson 5 points with an ace, LeBlanc 5 points and Edler 3 points with an ace. The Lady Buffs will compete in uneven bars. Pool III in the state tournament, In the individual finals Lewis was which begins Friday. Laci Burtard – Beam, 8.600; Vault, 8.550; Floor, 8.400; Bars, 8.250; All-Around, 33.800. Elizabeth Norrell – Vault, 8.200; Floor, 7.250; Bars, 7.200; Beam, 6.775; All-Around, 29.425. Josie Cartwright – Bars, 7.975. As a team Lone Star scored 103 points in the regional meet. Lone Star gymnasts compete in Class 4A Meet in Thornton THORNTON – Rylie Lewis, Laci Burtard and Josie Cartwright of the Lone Star gymnastics team competed in the Class 4A State Meet Friday at Thornton High School. Burtard and Cartwright attend Sterling High School and Lewis attends Caliche High School. In the team competition Burtard placed 16th all-around with a score of 33.800. She posted a score of 8.25 on vault; 8.650 (8.613) on the floor exercise; 8.375 (8.8.325) on the uneven bars and 7.950 on the balance beam. Lewis posted a score of 8.850 on the balance beam and 8.825 on the floor exercise. Caliche’s first match of the tournament is Friday is the final pool play contest of the day at approximately 4 p.m. against Paonia. On Saturday the Lady Buffs will again play the final pool match at around 11:30 a.m. The top teams from pool play will advance to cross-bracket action Saturday with the winner of Pool I playing the winner of Pool IV and the winner of Pool II taking on the winner of Pool III. The winners of those matches will advance to the semi-finals with the championship contest slated for 7 p.m. in the Denver Coliseum. The Lady Buffs have compete din the Class 1A state championship match the past 2 years and are making their first trip to the 2A Tournament for the first time since 2000 when they won the title.
