We are at an exciting time in education with a significant increase in online learning for students in British Columbia. A growing number of students are dissatisfied with the “one-size-fits-all” thinking and are seeking a personalized learning experience. FVDES is a public school with a twenty-year history of leading in the area of personalized learning, and it continues to provide excellent options for students in elementary, middle, and secondary programs. All of our courses are authorized by the BC Ministry of Education and taught by BC certified teachers. I hope that this booklet will provide you with information about the exciting aspects of an FVDES education and that you will choose to join our community of over 3000 students in the 2014 – 2015 school year. We offer core and elective courses at the grade 10 to 12 levels that you can choose to take online or through our paper-based modules. When you come to FVDES, our knowledgeable counselling team will assist you in developing a program that meets your academic goals. After setting up your courses, you will experience a learner-friendly course delivery model with academic support from experienced teachers in a way that fits your individual style. With our commitment to personalize the learning for your needs, you may start our high school courses at any point in the year and are allowed to complete within one year, working through the material at your own pace. If you are interested in a unique school experience, FVDES provides the structure to meet ministry requirements while giving flexibility to meet the individual needs of the families and students as a blended learning or distributed learning program. Many of our students use these programs as they travel or engage in athletic or fine arts pursuits. In addition to the academic courses, our programs provide families with exciting opportunities for extra curricular activities that are scheduled throughout the lower mainland. For students with special needs, our trained staff members will develop an individual education plan and provide you with all the necessary support to be successful. We have a full range of secondary core subjects, from grade 8 through to graduation. In addition, we have developed a broad range of elective courses to provide a complete offering for students wishing to pursue either an online/paper/combination program. Check www.fvdes.com for updates. www.fvdes.com 2014-15 Online Course Calendar 4 Ordinary Resident of British Columbia For the purposes of delivering distributed learning services, a student is resident in the province of British Columbia if the student is ordinarily resident in the province and the guardian of the student is ordinarily resident in British Columbia. Notwithstanding the definition offered above, students may be temporarily absent from British Columbia, yet still retain status as ordinarily resident, as follows: a) The parent or guardian remains resident in British Columbia while the student is temporarily absent. This temporary absence is marked by clear documentation that the student will be returning to the parental home at the end of this temporary absence. Some exchange students, athletes competing at elite levels, and students involved in extended travel or self-funded studies overseas could be considered ordinarily resident in British Columbia. b) If the student is temporarily absent from the province with the parent or guardian, they may be considered ordinarily resident in British Columbia if there is clear evidence that the family will be returning to British Columbia. This evidence might be a letter from an employer indicating the commencement or termination of a contract for work, or any other documentation deemed sufficient by the Superintendent or designate. An International Student who is regarded as “ordinarily resident” for funding purposes as defined by the Ministry of Education’s Policy Document International Students is considered ordinarily resident for the purposes of receiving distributed learning services. The program is a blend of both distributed learning and face-to-face instruction. Students will attend classes at FVDES two days per week for direct teacher instruction and integrated project-based learning. For the remaining days students will continue their work at home through the FVDES distributed learning program. Students will learn how to access their course websites, communicate electronically with their teacher, upload and download assignments, and interact in our online classroom. This course is a prerequisite for all students taking online courses through FVDES. HEALTH AND CAREER Health and Career Education 8 Code: HCE08s Prerequisite: none Delivery: Online or Paper This course is designed to provide students with introductory knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to be informed decision makers, and to make healthy and safe choices in their personal lives as well as in career exploration. Students will learn and apply processes for goal setting and will become aware of the effects of their choices on themselves and others. In this course students will learn about the range of sources of information and support available to them a variety of health, safety, and education topics. Health and Career Education 9 Code: HCE09 Prerequisite: none Delivery: Online or Paper This course is a continuation and expansion of the topics covered in HCE 8 and is designed to provide students with additional knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to be informed decision makers, and to make healthy and safe choices in their personal lives. An additional focus will be upon career exploration and determining individual career preferences and aptitudes. Students will learn and apply processes for goal setting and will become aware of the effects of their choices on themselves and others. In this course students will learn about the range of sources of information and support available to them for a variety of health, safety, and education topics. Grad Transitions 12 (GT) Code: GT Credits: 4 Capstone course for graduation Prerequisite: Must be in grade 12 to enroll Delivery: Online GT is designed to prepare students for a successful transition to life after secondary school. GT encourages students to: • Take ownership of their personal health and learning • Demonstrate the connections between learning and the future • Create a plan for growth as a global citizen • Exhibit the attributes of a BC graduate This course also explores post secondary learning options, prepares students for community-based learning, and helps them build capabilities needed for managing work or post-secondary life transitions. Students will be expected to produce documentation to satisfy the requirements for physical activity; completion of a minimum of 30 hours of work/volunteer experience, and develop and present a transition plan from high school. ART Art 8/9 Code: VA8 or VA9 Prerequisite: None Delivery: Online or Paper This course is for grade 8 or 9 students taking art for the first time at FVDES. It offers students a firm foundation in drawing and design basics and introduces them to painting. www.fvdes.com 2014-15 Online Course Calendar 9 Visual Arts 10 Code: VAG10 Credits: 4 Prerequisite: None Delivery: Paper This course offers students a firm foundation in drawing and design basics and introduces art appreciation, crafts, painting, and photography. Students complete 4 of 6 modules. The default modules are modules 1, 5, 6, 8 .Students may choose module 2 or 3 as a replacement. All students will take Module 1 (Drawing) and Module 6 (Theme and Image) unless previously completed at the grade 8 or 9 level. DVD programs accompany the Design Module, the Painting Module, and the Printmaking Module. A videotape is optional for the Drawing Module. There are no tests for this course. Art Foundations 11 Code: FNA11A Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend finishing Grade 10 Delivery: Paper There are four units, made of seven modules in Art Foundations 11. To receive the full four credits, all four units must be completed. Art Foundations 11 is an art appreciation course. The student should be prepared for extensive reading and writing assignments, with some hands-on projects. Studio Arts 11 Code: SADP11 Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend finishing Grade 10 Delivery: Paper Studio Arts 11 is designed for students who might have an interest in entering the commercial art field. There is an emphasis on lettering, poster design, and figure drawing. SCIENCES Science 8 Code: SC08 Prerequisite: Recommend Science 7 Delivery: Online or Paper Science 8 Online introduces: lab safety, scientific method, life science, physical science, and earth science. In Module 1, students are introduced to safety issues and the scientific method. Module 2 introduces students to cells and body systems. Module 3 introduces students to the work of optics, waves and light. Module 4 introduces students to forces and fluid systems. Module 5 covers the earth water systems. Students who take this course will work closely with the teacher on a weekly basis using information form the course website and our live interactive online virtual classroom. www.fvdes.com 2014-15 Online Course Calendar 10 Science 9 Code: SC09 Prerequisite: Recommend Science 8 Delivery: Online or Paper Science 9 Online extends the knowledge and understanding of science concepts. Module 1 continues with the study of cells and cell division, an extension from science 8. Module 2 covers elments, compounds, atomic structure, and writing-naming formulae. Module 3 covers electricity and circuits. Module 4 covers the solar system and the universe. Students who take this course will work closely with the teacher on a weekly basis using information from the course website and our live interactive online virtual classroom. Science 10 Code: SC10 Prerequisite: Recommend Science 9 Delivery: Online or Paper Science 10 is based on the new science 10 curriculum. Module 1 explores natural phenomena and human factors within ecosystems. Module 2 extends students’ knowledge of chemistry to Bohr models, chemical reactions, and radioactivity. Module 3 introduces motion, velocity, and acceleration. Module 4 covers the process associated with energy transfer within the earth’s geosphere and atmosphere as well as plate tectonics. Biology 11 Code: BI11 Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend Science 10 Delivery: Online or Paper Biology 11 will introduce you to the fascinating world of living organisms. In this course, you will study a huge range of living creatures, from submicroscopic viruses and bacteria, through fungi and plants, right up to complex multi-cellular animals like whales. The online course contains many unique features, such as video clips, animations, and links to cool, interactive websites. You will also be performing a number of virtual dissections using state of the art interactive software. If you wish, you may participate in weekly online study sessions with a group of other online learners. Much of the evaluation of the course is done online using the LXR testing program. Biology 12 Code: BI12 Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend Biology 11 Delivery: Online or Paper Biology 12 builds upon the knowledge gained in Biology 11, providing students with a much more detailed understanding of the operation of complex living organisms. To accomplish this, you will study the human body, from the structure and function of DNA and other biological molecules, right through to the structure and function of all major body systems, The online course contains many special features to enhance learning. These include video clips, animations, links to many interactive biology websites, and a comprehensive provincial exam preparation unit. Much of the evaluation for the course is done online using the LXR testing program. Students are supported throughout the course by an online instructor and may choose to participate in weekly online study sessions with other Biology 12 students. www.fvdes.com 2014-15 Online Course Calendar 11 Chemistry 11 Code: CH11 Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend Science 10 Delivery: Online or Paper Chemistry 11 will introduce students to the study of matter. In this course you will learn about topics ranging from the structure of atoms and atomic nuclei to the behavior of complex organic molecules that make up all living things on our planet. The online course contains many special features to make learning easier. These include video clips, animations, an online glossary of important terms, and links to many interactive chemistry web-sites. Chemistry 12 Code: CH12 Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend Chemistry 11 Delivery: Online or Paper Chemistry 12 builds upon the knowledge gained in Chemistry 11, providing students with a much more detailed understanding of the structure and behavior of matter. Any students considering further studies in the fields of general science, medical science, agriculture, forestry, engineering, geology etc., should investigate the requirement for Chemistry 12 as a prerequisite. The online version of Chemistry 12 offers many unique features to enhance student learning. These features include video clips, animations, interactive demonstrations, instant practice questions, and a provincial exam preparation unit. Students are supported throughout the course by an online instructor. Earth Science 11 Code: ESC11C Credits: 4 Prerequisite: none Delivery: Online or Paper Earth Science 11 is an introduction to the diverse aspects of earth and space science. Earth Science is a webbased applied science course that introduces geology, astronomy, oceanography, hydrology, and plate tectonics. Physics 11 Code: PH11 Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend Science 10 Delivery: Online or Paper Physics 11 online introduces students to the many areas of physics. Topics include waves, optics, motion, forces, momentum, work, power, energy, nuclear energy and special relativity. There is a mathematical component to the course so students are expected to be proficient in Math 9/10 skills. Physics 12 Code: PH12 Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend Physics 11 Delivery: Online or Paper Physics 12 builds on the concepts and knowledge from Physics 11 and introduces new topics. kinematics, dynamics, energy and momentum are extended to include 2-dimensional analysis. Circular Motion, Electrostatics, Circuitry and Electromagnetism are new topics. Students should have at least a Mathematics 11 background. How a 400,000-kilogram airplane can fly through the air? Or how devices such as the cell phone and the computer have transformed the way we communicate? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, this course will answer these questions and many more. In this course students will develop an understanding of the connection between science and technology and how they impact society and the environment. The thought-provoking topics and engaging multimedia will capture students’ imaginations, hold their attention, and arouse an interest in the study of science and technology. There are no tests in this course. Students are graded on send-in assignments. Sustainable Resources 12: Mining Code: SRM12 Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend Gr 11 Science Delivery: Online Mining is the third largest industry in BC after manufacturing and construction and employs 14,000 people directly. The complex geology of BC has provided the province with a rich and varied mineral endowment, from hard-rock minerals such as gold, copper, zinc, silver and lead, to soft-rock resources such as coal, natural gas, and oil. BC is recognized as a world leader for its expertise in this field. Sustainable Resources 12: Mining is designed to enhance student knowledge and expertise in this field. Students will investigate techniques used for hydrocarbon and mineral exploration, identification, and assessment in British Columbia. Students will outline the processes required to claim hydrocarbon and mineral resource rights and analyze the economic investment and costs of a typical hydrocarbon or mineral recourse project. Students will assess methods of regulating the environmental impact of hydrocarbon and mineral resource exploration, extraction, and processing. Computer Science Information Technology 10 Code: INT10 Prerequisite: Delivery: Online Credits: 4 none Information Technology 10 offers a wide variety of learning opportunities to students of all levels of computer usage and skill. Students who are new to the world of technology and those continuing from other technology courses will find interesting challenges and great possibilities in this course. Information Technology 10 assessments and projects allow a high level of personal creativity and individuality as students develop their skills and knowledge. This is a great elective course to give students a solid understand of technology that can be applied both in other courses and outside the school environment. www.fvdes.com 2014-15 Online Course Calendar 13 SOCIAL STUDIES Social Studies 8 Code: SS08 Prerequisite: none Delivery: Online or Paper In this online course, students examine historical civilizations in Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, and Africa. Students will learn the many differences as well as the similarities that distinguish our world and, as a result better understand the present. As will be discovered, virtually every aspect of society, from religion to geography and politics has influenced how civilization developed throughout the centuries. Students who take this course online will work closely with the teacher on a weekly basis using information from the course website and our live interactive online virtual classroom. Social Studies 9 Code: SS09 Prerequisite: Recommend Socials 8 Delivery: Online or Paper Social Studies 9 focuses on Europe and North America from 1500 to 1815, with link to current events whenever appropriate. It emphasizes understanding, connecting, applying knowledge, and practicing active citizenship. This course is made up of four modules. Students who take this course online will work closely with the teacher on a weekly basis using information from the course website and our live interactive online virtual classroom. Social Studies 10 Code: SS10 Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend Socials 9 Delivery: Online or Paper Socials Studies 10 is an interactive online course that focuses on the growth of Canada from colony to nationhood, with an emphasis on the years 1815 to 1914. Various themes are revisited throughout the course, including immigration and the face of Canada’s cultural mosaic, the use of art as a reflection of history, the changing nature of democracy, and the role of the First Nations in Canada’s development. Themes from the past are linked to current issues and events whenever possible. Socials Studies 11 Code: SS11 Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend Socials 10 Delivery: Online or Paper Social Studies 11 contributes to the important goal of preparing students for their lives as Canadian citizens and members of the international community. The curriculum covers diverse issues affecting Canada from 1914 to present, and consists of four modules, each culminating with a written test. • Module 1 looks at Canadian politics and governance • Module 2 and 3 cover 20th century domestic and international historical events • Module 4 analyzes global issues and human geography This course infuses written material as well as images, diagrams and additional media presentations of primary and secondary sources. Further recommendations are provided throughout the course. Social Studies 11 is a government examinable course. First Nations 12 Code: FNS12 Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend Socials 10 Delivery: Paper BC First Nations 12 is designed to enhance students’ appreciation of the diversity of First Nations perspectives in our province,B.C. First Nations explores First Nations individuals and cultures in contemporary and historical contexts. This course can be taken as an elective or in place of a Social Studies 11 course. Comparative Civilizations 12 Code: CCIV12 Prerequisite: Delivery: Online Credits: 4 none Comparative Civilizations 12 provides students with a range of information, experiences and skills that will facilitate their understanding of, and sensitivity to, a variety of cultures. This course spans time and the world, fostering student awareness of various civilizations and their contributions to the sum of human experience. Students develop an appreciation for diversity within and among cultures, including their own. Economics 12 Code: EC12 Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend Socials 10 Delivery: Paper Economics 12 is a course that can change your life. The first two modules deal with economic theory while the last two focus on more practical applications of theory. After taking this course, you will be forever armed against simplistic economic analysis wherever it is to be found. Geography 12 Code: GEO12 Prerequisite: Delivery: Paper Credits: 4 Recommend Socials 11 Geography 12 investigates the interactions of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. This is through an examination of the living Earth’s physical and human landscapes, spaces, and environments. History 12 Code: HI12 Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend Socials 11 Delivery: Online or Paper History 12 provides an introduction to the history of the 20th century, beginning with the treaties that ended World War I and ending with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. While studying these events, students learn skills necessary to interpret historical events including: how to ensure historical information is accurate and relevant, how to develop historical empathy, and how to present clear, logical arguments based on a thorough knowledge of events. www.fvdes.com 2014-15 Online Course Calendar 15 Law 12 Code: LAW12 Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend Socials 11 Delivery: Online or Paper Law 12 fosters skills and attitudes that enhance a student’s ability to address legal, social, and ethical issues, and reflect critically on the role of law in society. The study of law promotes skills and abilities needed to clearly express ideas, argue effectively and logically, and accurately interpret the written word. This course is designed to help students learn about their legal rights and responsibilities. This course consists of four modules: Fundamentals of Law, Criminal Law, Civil Law, and Family Law. ENGLISH English 8 Code: EN08 Prerequisite: Recommend English 7 Delivery: Online or Paper English 8 Online reviews language basics such as grammar, punctuation, basic writing and writing styles. This course includes the study of poetry, short stories, and a novel. A look into the future will be part of the focus as students delve into the world beyond the present. Students will also explore media-TV, radio, film, newspaper, computers, and technology, and how these communication tools inform and influence us. In addition to active participation in chosen activities, students are required to journal their progress towards the goal of physical fitness and skills acquisition. www.fvdes.com 2014-15 Online Course Calendar 30 Secondary School Apprenticeship/WEX Program (SSA) Secondary School Apprenticeship Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) is an educational program supported by the Ministry of Education and the Industry Training Authority (ITA). Students in this program must have a full-time or part-time job in one of the ITA recognized trades (see www.itabc.ca, click on “Apprenticeship and Red Seal Programs”) and have an employer who is willing to indenture the student. A student in this program upon successful completion will receive a total of 18 credits towards graduation. Students must first complete the 2 credits Introduction to Secondary School Apprenticeship Course. They will then receive 4 course credits for every 120 hours worked in the trade up to 480 hours or a total of 16 credits. The course credits earned by hours logged through the ITA and course work submitted to the SSA teacher/coordinator are for Secondary Apprenticeship (SSA) 11A, 11B, 12A, 12B. A detailed description of each component is included in this course calendar. In addition, upon successful completion of the SSA program students may qualify for the SSA $1000 scholarship. Introduction to Secondary School Apprenticeship 11 (SSA 11 Intro) Code: YSEVC11 Credits: 2 Prerequisite: 15 years old/Grade 10 This is a 2-credit course that will help students understand what apprenticeship is all about and how it can benefit the student. The main purpose of this course is to introduce the future apprentice to the Industry Training Authority (ITA), which is the governing body for industry training, certification and standards for the province of BC. Also, it will give the student some insight as to whether the trade option is an appropriate career choice. By investigating and researching the various apprentice trades, students will discover the many trade options open to them. www.fvdes.com 2014-15 Online Course Calendar 31 Secondary School Apprenticeship 11A Code: SSA11A Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend YSEVC11 This is a four credit course and a continuation of the Secondary School Apprenticeship program. This course involves some course work combined with work experience. It is expected that students have secured a sponsor and are working in an apprentice trade while in this program. Students will be registered with the Industry Training Authority (ITA) during this time. Students will also participate in an interview process with a trade advisor or panel to confirm their commitment to the program. Once students have logged 120 hours of work experience with the ITA and have submitted the appropriate forms, they will receive 4 credits that can be used towards graduation. Secondary School Apprenticeship 11B Code: SSA11B Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend SSA11A This is a four credit course and a continuation of the Secondary School Apprenticeship program. The apprenticeship program is designed with practical work experience in mind. In this course the student will complete the 120 hours of work experience and the required forms. Once students have logged 120 hours of work experience with ITA and have submitted the appropriate forms, they will receive 4 credits that can be used towards graduation. Secondary School Apprenticeship 12A Code: SSA12A Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend SSA11B This is a four credit course and a continuation of the Secondary School Apprenticeship program. The apprenticeship program is designed with practical work experience in mind. In this course the student will complete the 120 hours of work experience and the required forms. Once students have logged 120 hours of work experience with ITA and have submitted the appropriate forms, they will receive four credits that can be used towards graduation. Students will be expected to keep a logbook recording hours worked, and a student evaluation form completed by an employer will be needed to complete course credit. Secondary School Apprenticeship 12B Code: SSA12B Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend SSA12A This is a four credit course and a continuation of the Secondary School Apprenticeship program. The apprenticeship program is designed with practical work experience in mind. In this course the student will complete the 120 hours of work experience and the required forms. Once students have logged 120 hours of work experience with ITA and have submitted the appropriate forms, they will receive 4 credits that can be used towards graduation. The student will also complete a scholarship application for the opportunity to qualify for a government scholarship based on set criteria established by the Ministry of Education. This course completes the apprenticeship program. www.fvdes.com 2014-15 Online Course Calendar 32 Work Experience The work experience program offers students a unique opportunity to work in local businesses and industry as part of their school day and course work. Work experience is a supervised and monitored program that includes a combination of paid or unpaid work along with some course work and assignments. Up to 8 credits can be earned for WEX 12A and WEX 12B (4 credits each). Students can choose to do only one of the WEX 12 courses, or both WEX 12A and WEX 12B. Students that choose to enroll in WEX 12 are required to complete some written assignments, but the majority of their course requirements are completed in work experience placements. Students select one area of study in which they focus their attention. Students should consult with their career advisor for more information about focus areas. For each component, you will be required to complete 90 hours of community-based work placements in your chosen focus area to receive 4 credits towards graduation. Work Experience (WEX) 12A Code: WEX12A Prerequisite: Credits: 4 None WEX 12A will allow you to apply the knowledge you’ve learned in the classroom to “real life” situations in the workplace. It will also allow you to experience a career that you are interested in before graduating from high school. Work experience is a great way to make contacts, gain experience and develop skills necessary for employment. To complete WEX 12A a student will need to complete a number of written assignments, a safety lesson, and 90 hours of hours at their work experience placement. if you have any questions about WEX 12A please contact the WEX Coordinator at FVDES. Work Experience (WEX) 12B Code: WEX12B Prerequisite: Credits: 4 None Work Experience 12B is a continuation of WEX 12A.
