Seventy-five years ago, twelve people gathered in the Mayor of Claremont’s office to hear Mrs. Frances
Eleanor Smith explain a pressing need of hundreds of children who, thanks to the invention of the iron
lung, had survived polio but had no way of preparing for the rest of their lives. The solution was clear:
organize a facility where these children could rehabilitate their bodies and
spirits using the most advanced techniques. Out of that meeting and that need,
Casa Colina was born and local people rallied to its support.
Today, Casa Colina has grown to serve more than 10,500 adults and
children every year with a wide variety of medical conditions and disabilities.
A volunteer board still governs Casa Colina and we are still supported by
community members, people like you, who understand the profound value that
rehabilitation can have. I would like to thank my fellow board members for the
energy and insight that they bring to their participation and their unwavering commitment to making
Casa Colina a center of excellence in rehabilitation and medical care.
On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank the staff of Casa Colina for what they do every day.
The healing and progress that they bring to individual patients are the reasons why we on the Board
remain committed and why Casa Colina deserves your support. The work that they accomplish
together, as a team, is what makes Casa Colina a center of excellence and points out to us what lies
ahead – how we can continue to improve rehabilitation and medical care.
We welcome Captain Mark Kelly and Katherine and Jay Wolf to Casa Colina’s Tribute to Courage.
We are honored that they are sharing their stories with us and hope, with that sharing, we can better
understand what we must be as an organization as we move forward.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Casa Colina’s Tribute to Courage. This year we will honor
Katherine and Jay Wolf, who have been challenged by a primary question in rehabilitation: what happens
when an injured person comes home to the family? How can families rebuild their lives together?
Tonight, we will also learn about this critical process from another viewpoint,
that of Captain Mark Kelly. He was the Commander of the Space Shuttle Endeavour
on its last flight and is also the husband of former US Congresswoman, Gabrielle
Giffords. He will share his experiences both as a pilot and an astronaut, and as a
husband and a caregiver, witnessing the courage and determination of his wife as
she fights her way back to reclaiming her life.
These are incredible stories of courage and perseverance that have a parallel in
the story of Casa Colina itself. We have come a long way in our history as a
rehabilitation provider, from treating twenty children recovering from polio to what you see today: 22,000
patient days of care in the hospital annually; 110,000 outpatient visits overall; more than 200 physicians on
staff; and nearly 700 employees. As we take our place on the national stage of rehabilitation providers, we
embark on yet another redefinition and crossroads for Casa Colina within a health care industry that faces
so many challenges for providers and patients trying to access the most appropriate level of care.
In order to meet those challenges, we are beginning another major expansion - adding 31 beds to our
hospital and a medical office building. This will expand our continuum of care and give patients and
physicians rapid access to a wealth of diagnostic and therapeutic options. These strategic expansions will
safeguard our ability to remain viable, whatever changes may come.
But our first focus is, of course, the individual patient sitting knee to knee with each clinician every day.
When patients come to Casa Colina their need is immediate, but the resources to pay are not always available.
This Tribute to Courage helps maintain our free care fund which is frequently used to extend a patient’s care
so his or her potential can truly be reached, and to supplement unreimbursed services, such as on-site
housing for families under special critical circumstances. This attention to the individual needs of patients
and their families provides the extra element of care that makes real the “opportunity to achieve maximum
potential,” which defines our mission.

Katherine and Jay Wolf were
college sweethearts. After
marrying at the age of 22,
these Southerners moved to California. The young
couple lived an idyllic life by the beach in Malibu.
He studied law at Pepperdine; she began modeling
and acting. They had a baby boy.
On April 21, 2008, the unthinkable happened.
While their son napped peacefully in his crib,
Katherine collapsed on the kitchen floor while
making lunch. Jay arrived home and found his young
wife in distress. He called 911. She was rushed to
UCLA Medical Center where doctors discovered
she had massive bleeding in her brain caused by a
congenital brain defect – an arteriovenous
malformation (AVM).
Her doctors performed 16 hours of intricate brain
surgery to save her life. They removed 60% of her
cerebellum. Thankfully, Katherine’s cognition and
mental faculties were still intact. Yet her motor control
was completely gone and the right side of her face
was paralyzed.
She spent 40 days in intensive care at UCLA,
then another three months in its neuro-acute rehab
unit before she was transferred to Casa Colina’s
Transitional Living (TLC) for its short-term
residential rehabilitation
program. Jay moved into one of
the Casa Colina homes adjacent
to the 20-acre medical and rehabilitation campus with
their young son, so they could be there to support
her. On November 10, 2008, she moved into the
Casa Colina home with her family and received her
therapy through TLC’s day treatment program.
Dr. Yong Lee, board-certified physiatrist, oversaw
her medical care. She spent up to six hours a day in
individual and group therapy working with an
occupational therapist, physical therapist,
neuropsychologist, and speech language pathologist
to re-learn the skills that once came so easily to her.
“James was eating baby food when I was trying to
swallow baby food. James was learning to walk when
I was re-learning to walk. James was learning to talk
when I was re-learning how to talk. It was crazy!”
Katherine stated.
After more than a year at Casa Colina, the family
was ready to leave its campus and found a home in
Los Angeles. Jay is now an attorney and Katherine has
had additional facial surgeries to restore her ability to
smile. Their entertaining son James, now four, gives
her ample opportunity to work on developing her grin.
Each day, her smile grows wider and brighter.

Mark Kelly is an American astronaut, retired US Navy
Captain, best selling-author, prostate cancer survivor,
and an experienced naval aviator who flew combat
missions during the Gulf War. The winner of many
awards, including the Legion of Merit, two Defense
Superior Service Medals and two Distinguished Flying
Crosses, Kelly was selected as an astronaut in 1996.
He flew his first of four missions in 2001 aboard Space
Shuttle Endeavour, the same space shuttle that he
commanded on its final flight in May 2011. He has also
commanded Space Shuttle Discovery and is one of
only two individuals who have visited the International
Space Station on four different occasions.
Already a celebrated American, Kelly became the
center of international attention after the January 2011
assassination attempt on his wife, former US
Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. In their
best-selling memoir, Gabby, the couple shares their
story of hope and resilience with the world. The
inspirational memoir has topped multiple best-seller
lists, including the New York Times, the Wall Street
Journal, USA Today, and Amazon. Kelly and Giffords
have captivated the nation with their story, appearing
in an exclusive Diane Sawyer interview, and on
“Nightline” and “The Daily Show,” among others,
and have appeared on the covers of People and USA
Today. Named one of the Esquire’s 2011 “Americans
of the Year,” Kelly was also featured on the cover of
and profiled in the magazine.
Kelly’s identical twin brother, Scott, is also an
astronaut who served as commander of both the
Space Shuttle and the International Space Station.
They share the distinction of being the only siblings
who have traveled in space.
With 6,000 flight hours in more than 50
different aircraft, 375 aircraft carrier landings, 39
combat missions and more than 50 days in space,
Astronaut Mark Kelly is one of our country’s most
experienced pilots.
A sought-after keynote speaker, Mark Kelly is
an American hero who inspires others to be their
best while remaining true to their core values. He
exemplifies leadership, the importance of teamwork,
and courage under pressure.

Bonnie Hunt is a versatile and
accomplished writer, director,
producer and an Emmy, Golden
Globe and SAG Award nominated
actress, earning critical acclaim in
film, television and theater.
Growing up in one of Chicago’s blue-collar
neighborhoods, Hunt pursued an acting career with
the famous Second City improvisational theater
while continuing to work as an Oncology nurse at
Northwestern Memorial Hospital. She soon became
familiar to audiences with her unforgettable cameos
in such films as Rain Man, where she played the
toothpick-dropping waitress, and in Dave as the
White House tour guide. Her improvised line,
“We’re walking, we’re walking…” quickly became
famous as people embraced Hunt’s unique accessible
brand of humor.
Hunt’s television accomplishments are
considerable and innovative. Bonnie made television
history when she became the first person to write,
produce and star in a prime time series. Bonnie
encouraged incorporating improvisation into her
prime time series and this ambitious vision soon
became a popular trend. But she didn’t stop there.
Hunt produced her show using five cameras instead
of four, integrated overlapping dialogue and elected
not to use the then standard laugh track. Today many
of Hunt’s techniques are used on prime time and
cable television.
She went on to create three critically acclaimed
series – writing, producing, directing and starring
in The Building on CBS and
Life with Bonnie for ABC, where
she earned Emmy and Golden
Globe nominations.
Continuing to build an
impressive film resume, Hunt
received rave reviews for her roles including Tom
Cruises’ scrutinizing sister-in-law in Jerry Maguire,
Tom Hanks’ wife in The Green Mile, Robin Williams’
love interest in Jumanji, Random Hearts with
Harrison Ford, Norman Jewison’s Only You, Cheaper
By The Dozen and Cheaper By The Dozen 2 with Steve
Martin, and the family hits, Beethoven and Beethoven’s
2nd. For MGM Bonnie wrote, directed and acted in the
timeless, highly praised feature film, Return To Me.
Her long association with Disney/Pixar has included
starring roles in the animated hits A Bug’s Life,
Monsters Inc., and most recently, Hunt not only
starred but received a writing credit in the Pixar
classic Cars.
Bonnie has also been seen every weekday on her
own nationally syndicated talk show, The Bonnie
Hunt Show.
Bonnie is dedicated to giving back. Her
commitment in raising funds to sponsor medical
research is remarkable. The funds raised have gone
to many foundations close to her own heart, including
the Northwestern Brain Tumor Institute, The Make A
Wish Foundation, The Christopher and Dana Reeve
Foundation, American Veterans, The Arthritis
Foundation, ALS, and The Robert H. Lurie
Comprehensive Cancer Center.
