Honoring Marines by Educating Their Children 2010 yearbook “You are indeed contributing to the development of one of our nation’s most precious resources and to the future of our country.” The nation’s oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships to military families —President John F. Kennedy to the Scholarship Foundation on the occasion of the 1st Annual New York Leatherneck Ball, December 7, 1962 Honoring Marines by Educating Their Children T he Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation provides educational scholarships to sons and daughters of Marines with particular attention given to children whose parents have been killed or wounded in action. It Began With One Student In 1962, Brigadier General Martin F. Rockmore USMC (Ret) read a New York Times article about a Medal of Honor recipient who could not afford to send his son to college. Inspired to honor this Marine, he and a few determined volunteers established the New York Leatherneck Ball which raised the funds for the Foundation’s very first scholarship. Compare that to the Scholarship Foundation’s average annual family income of $46,400. That leaves our Marine families with few options for their children’s post-high school educations. Additionally, the unique challenges Marine families face— extended deployments and destabilizing moves that result in a loss of educational continuity—make the hurdles to higher education particularly high. Given these challenges, and the rising costs of education, it is not a surprise that applications for our scholarships have increased 55% since 2007. scholarship application growth $35,000 $30,916 $30,000 2000 $25,000 1800 $20,000 1600 1400 $15,000 1200 $10,000 Note: Expense categories are based on institutional budgets for students as reported by colleges and universities in the Annual Survey of Colleges. Today, he and his siblings, Amy and Matt, are all pursuing college degrees with support from the Scholarship Foundation. As Matt explains, “If I didn’t have this scholarship, I wouldn’t be going to school right now.” The Scholarship Foundation proudly serves all Marines and their families, giving special attention to those children whose parent has been killed or wounded in action. In Memoriam SSgt Jorge A. Molina-Bautista Scholarship recipient, Jorge Molina, was just 12 years old when his father, Marine Staff Sergeant Jorge Molina-Bautista, was killed by hostile fire in Iraq. Jorge says, “I’ve had to learn how to take care of my family and be the man of the house; I must set an example for my two brothers.” Today, he is doing just that by pursuing criminal justice studies at Arizona State University. In Memoriam GySgt Darrell W. Boatman 6 The sacrifices made by the men and women of the United States Marine Corps are well known. But what is less often seen are the many sacrifices made by their families. Their sons, daughters and other loved ones must contend with frequent, destabilizing moves — all while living with the knowledge that their Marine might return with a life-changing disability or never return at all. The town of North Topsail Beach, North Carolina, renamed Marine Drive to GySgt D.W. Boatman Drive. His daughter, Lauren, received a Heroes Tribute Scholarship which provides up to $30,000 over four years to every child of a Marine whose parent has been killed in combat since September 11, 2001. 20 10 Ye arb o o k M a ri n e C o rp s S c h o l a rs h i p Fo u n d a ti o n | w w w. m c s f. o r g 7 The American Patriots Campaign 2007–2012 T o meet the growing needs of educating Marine children, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation launched the American Patriots Campaign to raise $50 million by our 50th anniversary in 2012. One of the most difficult things military members are called on to do is to leave behind their families to deploy and defend freedom around the globe. Without a strong support network here at home, this separation can take its toll on the morale of our servicemembers and their families, especially during times of war. For 48 years now, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has helped ease the burden on our Marines, Sailors, and families by providing more than 24,000 scholarship to the deserving children of our naval servicemembers. Through the remarkable generosity and goodwill of volunteers and donors alike, this organization helps our Marines undertake each mission with the confidence that their families will be well cared for back home. The support you offer allows military children to further their education and secure a promising future. On behalf of all Marines, I thank everyone who generously sacrifices their own time and resources in support of this worthy cause. Your efforts make a difference in the lives of our servicemembers and their children, and the support you provide is sincerely appreciated by all Marines and family members who benefit from your compassion and generosity. We are proud of their accomplishments as they represent all who support the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. We plan to fill future Yearbooks with even more talented Marine Corps sons and daughters. Nearing our 50th anniversary in 2012, the Scholarship Foundation is at a pivotal moment in our history. Having provided 24,000 scholarships valued at $50 million since our founding in 1962, the demand for our assistance is now at record levels. Applications have increased 55% since 2007, and we anticipate this upward trend will continue as the costs of higher education far exceed our families’ average income (less than $47,000 last year). Supporters nationwide are responding to this need with generous investments that have created new awards and strengthened the Scholarship Foundation’s ability to honor Marines in the most meaningful way possible — by educating their children. As you learn more about our supporters in the following pages, we hope you will reflect on the generosity and leadership of the men and women who make our work possible. From golf tournament volunteers raising critical funds one foursome at a time, to our American Patriots Campaign Leadership Cabinet, we thank those who are investing in the very future of America. To our students and supporters — Bravo Zulu and Semper Fidelis! Gen Robert Magnus usmc (Ret) Chairman, Board of Directors Margaret B. New Endowed Scholarships Endowed scholarships are awarded to students in perpetuity from contributions greater than $100,000. Cornerstone scholarships are made possible by an endowed gift of $250,000 or more and are awarded to uniquely qualified students. The General William L. “Spider” Nyland Cornerstone Scholarships A Cornerstone level, endowed scholarship was created by an anonymous donor to be known as The General William L. “Spider” Nyland USMC (Ret) Scholarships. This need-based fund will provide four (4) $2,500 scholarships each year in honor of General Nyland who served as both Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps and Chairman of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors. The scholarships will be awarded to four freshmen in the 2010 academic year with a goal of supporting them throughout four years of higher education. The Rita and Chuck Scianna Family Cornerstone Scholarship Long before Chuck Scianna began his distribution company in oilfield tubular goods, he served in the Marine Corps, “I remember what it was like to live on that income.” Today, his own children are grown, and he now sees their young friends in the military with similar challenges. Chuck remains connected to his time in the Corps, “I had the opportunity to spend a week on the USS Theodore Roosevelt and get to know these outstanding kids and meet some of their families. Their stories are what move me.” His family’s Cornerstone scholarship honors a past that owes much to education, “After serving in World War II, my father graduated from high school at the age of 22 as valedictorian. Because of his dedication and the path that he took, I was able to be the first in my family to go to college. That’s the kind of impact we are hoping to make. This is not charity. It’s an investment ... one that will pay huge dividends in the future for this country. continued Scholarship recipient, Monique Rodriguez, is a senior at Arizona State University studying chemical engineering. Her father retired from the Marine Corps Reserve in 1986. One of five children, she is the first person in her family to attend college. M a ri n e C o rp s S c h o l a rs h i p Fo u n d a ti o n | w w w. m c s f. o r g 17 New Endowed Scholarships continued Christopher Randolph Endowed Scholarship The Commandant’s Own Cornerstone Scholarships This permanently endowed fund—created by an anonymous donor—will provide two $5,000 scholarships annually in recognition of the Marine Corps’ flagship marching unit, the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps known as “The Commandant’s Own.” The scholarship will honor not only the musical tradition of the Corps, but also the dedicated leadership of LtCol Brent A. Harrison USMC (Ret) who served four Commandants—Krulak, Jones, Hagee and Conway—as Commanding Officer of the Drum and Bugle Corps. Christopher F. Randolph, past President and CEO of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, died on May 22, 2009, in New York, after a nine-month battle with brain cancer. He was 64. Shortly after his diagnosis, Chris wrote, “Leading this Foundation and serving the needs of our Marine families have been a great privilege, bringing together so many important aspects of my life – my time in the U.S. Marine Corps, my profound belief in the power of higher education and a focus on family.” Donors from around the country established the Christopher Randolph Memorial Scholarship in his honor. Marine Federal Credit Union Endowed Scholarship True to its corporate mission to serve military families, Marine Federal Credit Union has been a strong supporter of the Scholarship Foundation for many years. Vice President Robert Dickerson states, “It’s critical that America doesn’t forget those who have served ... and especially those who have fallen on the battlefield. There are a lot of good organizations out there that take care of our military, but I cannot think of any one that is as focused, efficient, and effective as the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. These scholarships are a sustainable, meaningful way to improve the lives of these children while honoring their Marine parents. We’re proud to be involved.” Manly Family Endowed Scholarship Los Angeles attorney, John Manly, is not a Marine, but his respect for the Corps runs deep. At a very young age, he went to military school and had great admiration for the Marine instructors there. He later served ten years in the United States Naval Reserve as an Intelligence Officer and had a number of Marines in his units. This made him keenly aware of the sacrifices made by Marines and their families. “We ask so much of these young people. Our men and women in combat put their life in harm’s way, and some have paid the ultimate sacrifice. We owe them an incredible debt of gratitude.” Most of all, John and his wife want to offer hope to Marine children, “What these scholarships say to a child is that you are important ... that your mom’s or dad’s sacrifices as a Marine family are not forgotten—so much so that people you have never met are willing to pay for your college education. It conveys the love and respect that Marines, and all branches of the military, have for one another ... and that we are in this together. It is our way of saying thank you.” The Commandant's Own U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps 18 20 10 Ye arb o o k M a ri n e C o rp s S c h o l a rs h i p Fo u n d a ti o n | w w w. m c s f. o r g 19 New Endowed Scholarships continued LCpl Abraham Simpson Memorial Endowed Scholarship As an Eagle Scout, 19 year-old Abe Simpson was eager to help others. After high school, that calling was the Marine Corps and a chance to serve his country. He became a mortarman and was assigned to Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1 Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton. On November 9, 2004, he was killed by a direct hit of an RPG—fired from a mosque—while he and his fire team were setting up their gun on the second day of Operation Phantom Fury, the Battle for Fallujah, Anbar Province, Iraq. This scholarship honors his determination to uphold the Marine tradition. Prior to his departure, he had said, “I want to be infantry to share with someone who needs hope, or take a bullet for someone who needs more time. If it happens to anyone, it would be better if it happens to me, because I know where I’m going.” Sgt Jonathan J. Simpson Memorial Endowed Scholarship Born and raised in Quebec, Canada, Jonathan Simpson lived with his father in Rockport, Texas after finishing high school. The day after he became an American citizen on July 4, 2001, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and became a Hercules C-130 Navigator with the VMGR-152 in Okinawa, Japan. When his cousin, LCpl Abraham Simpson, was killed in Iraq in November, 2004, Jonathan was in Chino, California, to be a pall bearer for his cousin. He became determined to switch from the air wing to become a Recon Marine in honor of Abe, as infantry was what Abe had always wanted to be. Jonathan was killed on October 14, 2006, by a sniper bullet while on his first patrol in Taqaddum, Iraq, just three weeks after he’d arrived in country. Both Simpson cousins are memorialized with endowed scholarships which will help retell their story of dedication and sacrifice while helping countless Marine children follow their dreams. Both the LCpl Abraham Simpson and Sgt Jonathan Simpson scholarships were endowed through proceeds from our LA Golf event and its generous volunteers, sponsors and participants. 20 20 10 Ye arb o o k “We held our breath when we realized Jonathan was joining a long line of warriors that have defended freedom around the world. Aéro Film Lance O’Connor, and his team at Aéro Film in Santa Monica, California, produced Voices of Heroes — a film documenting the life-changing impact of our scholarships on our students. Aéro — one of the top production companies working today — created a film that is both a time capsule of the Scholarship Foundation approaching our 50th anniversary and a timeless collection of stories reflecting the importance of our support of Marine Corps families. Watch Voices of Heroes by visiting www.mcsf.org. BAE Systems, Inc. With an announcement at a gathering of the American Patriots Campaign Leadership Cabinet in September 2009, General Anthony Zinni USMC (Ret) — former Acting President of CEO of BAE Systems, Inc. — formalized the company’s $2 million commitment to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation – the largest single gift in our history. BAE Systems’ investment will provide scholarships to those Marine Corps sons and daughters pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics with special recognition given to their corporate philanthropy at our special events around the country. Major General Andrew B. Davis USMC (Ret) and Mrs. Margaret B. Davis Supporters of the Scholarship Foundation for more than 30 years, General and Mrs. Davis’ connection to Marine families is deeply personal — further evidenced in 2009 by Margaret’s appointment as President and CEO and she and General Davis’ generous pledge to the American Patriots Campaign. Their personal and professional commitment inspires us to go above and beyond the call of service so that future generations of Marine families — those who have already sacrificed so much — do not have to sacrifice their children’s educations as well. Deborah G. Carstens Richard “Rick” and Kathryn Lieb Philanthropist Deb Carstens’ gift to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation supports the very heart of what we do – need-based scholarships for bright young minds whose Marine families cannot afford increasing tuition. Given in memory of her late husband — a Marine who embodied the motto Semper Fidelis — her support will give particular assistance to students from the San Diego area – home to a significant number of Marine families and Deb’s home for many years. Rick Lieb – decorated for his Marine service and a former member of the Scholarship Foundation’s Board of Directors – and his wife, Kathy, have reaffirmed their abiding commitment to our mission with a generous pledge to the “Richard E. Lieb Family Scholarship” which they created in 2007. Paying tribute to those who “… believed in our ability to achieve,” Rick and Kathy are providing invaluable educational opportunities to the next generation of America’s leaders. Coastal Enterprises Colonel (IL) James N. Pritzker IL ARNG (Ret) A fixture in the Camp Lejuene community, Coastal Enterprises significantly increased its support of Marine families in 2009 by establishing annual scholarships through one of our most successful events — the Coastal Carolina Golf Tournament held each fall around Jacksonville, North Carolina. A corporate sponsor of the event for many years, Coastal Enterprises recognizes that there is no better investment — nor way to honor Marines — than educating Marine children. Colonel Pritzker — former member of the Board of Directors – understands the power of philanthropy, having given generously to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation and other worthy causes for many years. In addition to the scholarships already established in the name of Tawani Enterprises — of which he is President and CEO — in 2009, Colonel Pritzker pledged critical funding for Scholarship Foundation initiatives that will lay the groundwork for even more scholarships to be given in the years to come. Don and Susie Drobny Henry M. Rowan Family Foundation A member of the American Patriots Campaign Leadership Cabinet — and a Board Director — Don Drobny, along with his wife Susie, have significantly increased the profile of the Scholarship Foundation in their home state of South Carolina. Through dedicated leadership of the South Carolina Golf Tournament — and a personal commitment to annual scholarships funded through that event — the Drobnys’ investment yields dividends far beyond the Palmetto state’s borders. Henry M. Rowan, Manning Smith, and Virginia Rowan Smith — members of the American Patriots Campaign Leadership Cabinet — established scholarships for our Heroes Tribute program in 2006. Their 2009 gift reiterates their desire to provide educational opportunities particularly for those students who have lost their Marine parents in combat since September 11, 2001. Established through our Philadelphia Ball, the Rowan Family Scholarships provide concrete opportunity to families who have given all in service to their country. Jim and Sue King Board of Directors Vice Chairman, Jim King, and his wife, Sue, have been deeply committed to both education and Marine Corps values since his service as an aviator during Vietnam and Sue’s tenure as an elementary school teacher during those years. Since then, they have given generously of their time and resources to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. Their 2009 commitment allows us to thoughtfully prepare for increasing numbers of scholarship recipients by investing in such important tools as a newly launched web site (www.mcsf.org) and strategic communication materials. The Kings understand — intrinsically — the power of educating Marine children and the necessity of effective leadership in creating opportunities for them. 24 20 10 Ye arb o o k Sack Family Foundation Longtime Scholarship Foundation supporter, Burton “Skip” Sack, and family have given generously in support of our programs. Their 2009 contribution reaffirms their unfailing dedication to our mission of providing life-changing opportunities for higher education to Marine Corps sons and daughters. With Sack family support, the Foundation provides both annual scholarships and Heroes Tribute awards which include up to $30,000 over four years to children whose Marine parents have been killed in combat since September 11, 2001. Skip reflects, “I can’t think of a more worthwhile cause for fellow Marines to support. Educating the kids of Marines that have fallen in combat is the best way we can honor their sacrifice. For those of us that can afford it, it’s the very least we can do. However, God seems to be leading me in another direction. This scholarship will allow me to continue on in school ... As a student and Division One wrestler, his schedule is quite demanding. In addition to struggling to support his academic pursuits, his family has been hard hit by recent medical bills, a recent career change and preparations for Hunter’s younger brother to attend college next year. Besides offering peace of mind for his parents, the scholarship brings clarity and direction, “I began ... undecided in my career goals and confused as to where my life was.” The award has meant a lot to his father, a police officer and Marine who left the Corps as a corporal in 1985. Two years later he also lost his mother to depression. Now a freshman at Lehigh University, he realizes that his accomplishments must be his own, “With the loss of both my parents, I have learned that time is very precious. I am coming from nothing, the ground up. I have come out as a stronger person.” The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has been able to offer support to this Marine child in a way few have, “Never in my life has one person told me they were proud of me. Not for honor roll, not for high honor roll, or for [sports]. I thank you exponentially for helping me to further my education and pursue my destiny. My father would be proud of what I have accomplished.” M a ri n e C o rp s S c h o l a rs h i p Fo u n d a ti o n | w w w. m c s f. o r g 53 Mitchell DeMarco Stanley, NY Lorton, VA Matthew DeMattia Travis is working on an associates degree in psychology from Northern Virginia Community College. He hopes to transfer to Virginia Tech for his bachelor’s degree before entering the military in the footsteps of his father, GySgt Benjamin Bandoh. Travis says, “Neither of my parents were born in America, but they came [from Haiti and Ghana] seeking freedom. This country allowed my parents to start a new family history and I intend to pass on their will to my children. With this scholarship, I am able to continue my educational pursuits without causing additional strain on my parents.” Alissa Imbriaco Clark, NJ Rutgers University General Karl S. Establish An Endowed Scholarship Establish an endowed scholarship by investing $100,000. Endowed scholarships are given to outstanding students in perpetuity. Heroes Tribute The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation provides up to $30,000 to the children of Marines whose parent has been killed in combat since September 11, 2001. Please visit our web site to contribute to this important program. Establish An Annual Scholarship A gift of $2,500 will provide a one-year, onetime scholarship to a deserving son or daughter of a Marine. Your one-time scholarship can be designated in $2,500 increments up to $10,000. Visit our web site at www.mcsf.org for more information. Board of Directors Make A Planned Gift Contact us at 1-866-496-5462 to discuss how you can support our Marine Corps family through a planned gift, including testamentary bequests, charitable remainder trusts, deferred gifts, insurance proceeds and annuities. Workplace Giving Many companies match gifts made by current and retired employees, which will often double your gift to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. Please contact your company’s human resources office to facilitate this contribution. If you are a Federal civilian, postal or military donor, please participate in the Combined Federal Campaign directing your contributions to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation (#11284).
