I chose Cardno because… of its good office culture, with a young,
ambitious and innovative team. I have since discovered that along with
all these attributes there is a wealth of experience and knowledge that is
shared between sections, as well as the wider Business Units and Cardno
companies.
My first experience at Cardno… involved a steep learning curve during
my first few months, as I had limited experience in Waste Management.
However during the challenges I’ve encountered, I have been well supported
by my managers, and the Waste Discipline Leader who has many years of
experience in the area.
Recently I have worked on… the development of a significant Resource
Recovery project for a Regional Council in the Perth Metropolitan Region.
The project ultimately aims to divert waste from landfill by converting it into
a usable product (such as energy and/or compost), which I believe is the way
forward for sustainable waste management in Australia. Considering such
projects are cutting-edge, it is very exciting to be involved in the process. A
typical day for me includes working with my team in the Waste Management
section, writing technical reports, attending client and internal meetings,
reviewing resources, attending conferences and seminars on waste.
“Cardno has
a good office
culture with a young,

and innovative team.”
8
Working at Cardno… provides me with the opportunity to work in the
Waste Management discipline which has translated into a diverse and
interesting range of work tasks. Ultimately I would like to manage my own
projects in future, and further develop a strong knowledge base in the
environmental management sector.

qualified water resources, coastal and ocean engineers. The team is

coastal, marine, estuarine, rural and urban settings.
Over the past year… I have been working on a project named
‘Citiswich’, which is a billion dollar 335 ha masterplanned industrial

Cardno Lawson Treloar… was commissioned to undertake the
local and regional flood assessments, and develop the stormwater
management strategy for the development. With such a large project to
be completed in a relatively short timeframe, a team of engineers were
assigned components of the project to ensure the job was completed
on time.
The task ahead of us… was to ensure that no adverse impacts
resulted from the development for both the construction and operational
phases of the project. To achieve these outcomes structures such as
culverts, detention basins, weirs, bio-retention systems and vegetated
swales all had to be specifically designed.
My tasks included… hydrologic modelling, local hydrodynamic flooding
assessments, and assisting with the water sensitive urban design
aspects of the project.
Working on this project… further extended my knowledge in a variety
of modelling situations including how water sensitive urban design
features can be incorporated into deisgns and ultimately the constructed
product. The local flooding in particular was relatively complex and
achieving an acceptable solution was both challenging and rewarding.

Dashpreet Singh
Civil Engineer
Urban and Transport, Sydney, NSW
(Honours) from the University of New South Wales. After graduating
in 2008, Dashpreet joined Cardno’s Urban and Transport team as a
Civil Engineer.
Recently I have worked on… The Ponds development, located between
Quakers Hill and Rouse Hill in the local government area of Blacktown City
“I have gained valuable knowledge and

Council, NSW. The development consists of approximately 750 residential
lots, roads, civil works, services and landscaping works to be developed and
released in stages. The first release is planned for mid 2008.
The challenge, core to the developments potential commercial success, is the
central drainage corridor incorporating creek rehabilitation and re-vegetation,
extensive landscaping, public parks and open space areas. Approximately
one million trees are to be planted in conjunction with conserved native
vegetation and threatened species within this landmark development.
Cardno is the Project Manager throughout the masterplanning, design and
construction phases of the project, working closely with Landcom, the
consultant team, authorities and adjacent land owners. Cardno is responsible
for appointing and managing specialist consultants, obtaining approvals
and liaising with authorities, tendering of construction works, construction
management and finalisation and registration.
Working on The Ponds... has yielded its rewards in many ways. I have gained
valuable knowledge and experience through my involvement in coordinating
and managing key tasks pertaining to the masterplanning, design and
construction phases of the project.
Having responsibility at work... allows me to exercise my negotiation skills
by closely working with Landcom, the consultant teams and other authorities.
The project has also provided me with the opportunity to experience other
disciplines by liaising with an extensive team of consultants addressing the
various environmental, heritage, social and design issues particular to the
project.

Aaron Gilboy
Civil Engineer
Springfield, QLD
Queensland. Aaron began his career at the Cardno Springfield office in
July 2007, mid-way through his final year of studies.
Being part of the Cardno team... has provided me with the opportunity
to work on the Brookwater Estate project - one of south-east
Queensland’s most exclusive residential addresses. When completed, the
total infrastructure cost of the development will total approximately

$50 million and more than 1,400 people will call Brookwater Estate their
new home.
Brookwater Estate is highlighted by its integration of civil engineering
design with landscape architecture and leading water sensitive urban
design concepts. The masterplanned development including residential
and non-residential areas has been structured around the golf course,
with all stormwater drainage flowing into the golf course area for
treatment before discharging into the local receiving waterways.
Brookwater Estate utilises a wide range of Cardno’s capabilities
including civil design, project management, water supply and sewerage,
preparation of development approvals and environmental and structural
engineering.
My career at Cardno... began mid-way through my final year of studies.
Joining the Cardno Springfield office, I gained experience both on-site
and as an assistant to the project manager. Since this time, my role has
expanded to take on a lead project management role for all Brookwater
Estate projects as well as a number of other prominent projects within
the Greater Springfield Area.
The most satisfying aspect of my job... is that I am able to participate
in the project from the planning phase, during the engineering design
and monitor construction as the designs are realised on site. To witness
the successes of the designs prepared by the Cardno Springfield team is
immensely satisfying.

Dubai-based master developer Nakheel engaged Cardno to masterplan all of
the marinas in the Palm Jebel Ali development. The Palm Jebel Ali is one of the
largest manmade islands on earth and will be 50 per cent larger than the original,
the Palm Jumeirah. Upon completion in 2010, the Palm Jebel Ali will be home to
more than 250,000 people and host several thousand marina berths for residents
living on the island.
VRC Flemington Racecourse Redevelopment, Melbourne, Australia
Flemington Racecourse, home of the Melbourne Cup, has a track length of
2.316 km (excluding chutes). Cardno was commissioned to carry out the design

the reconstruction of the course proper and flood mitigation works. This is
the first time the track has undergone a complete reconstruction since it was
built in 1840.
One Featherston Street, Wellington, New Zealand
Cardno TCB has been engaged by New Zealand’s leading construction firm,
Fletchers Construction, to provide construction set-out survey services for
a building at One Featherston Street, Wellington. Once completed, One
Featherston Street will be the largest commercial office building in New Zealand.
Post Tsunami Reconstruction Works – Housing and Community Facilities Project, Maldives
Cardno Acil is providing consulting services associated with the need to
provide housing and key infrastructure development for Maldivian people made
homeless and displaced by the December 26, 2004 tsunami. The new facilities

civil works, bridge works, services and landscaping.
As the engineering designers for the project, Cardno is responsible for
the design of bulk earthworks, roads, drainage and structural elements.
To date Cardno has successfully delivered over $10 million of work with
contract works to a similar value currently underway.
Having responsibility at work... has enabled me to successfully
project manage the design and construction of Stanhope Parkway West,
providing future access to The Ponds development. The works include
1.5 km of arterial road, two signalised intersections and a bridge over
Second Ponds Creek.

Any advice for other graduates... working in the industry as a graduate
is an exciting experience where everything is new and challenging. There
is a great deal of satisfaction that comes with the growth of knowledge
and experience. Be sure to ask many questions of those around you, as
this is the best way to learn.
I chose Cardno because... it’s a multidisciplinary engineering consultancy
engaged in a diverse range of projects world wide. As a graduate I felt
that it was important to begin my career in an organisation that had the
capacity to support its young engineers develop professionally in their
chosen field as well as other disciplines.
