The Route du Bonheur has been part of the DNA of Relais & Châteaux
since 1954, when the first gourmet route was created to link the eight
founding properties along the famous Nationale 7.
The Relais & Châteaux Owners, Maîtres de Maison and Chefs are the ambassadors
of this Route and accompany you for the (re)discovery of their region. They have lived in the
region many years and it remains close to their hearts. They tread its paths daily, know all its
secret secrets places, hold the keys to its treasures… Who better to share with you the most
beautiful regions of the world?
“One day the Route du Bonheur will span the world” was the claim of the first ad by Relais
& Châteaux – today it has become a reality. Relais & Châteaux boasts more than 60 Routes
du Bonheur on the five continents: Peru, from Lima to lake Titicaca via the Machu Picchu;
discovery of the Cyclades in Greece by boat; the Mont-Blanc by Grand Chef Emmanuel

Route du Bonheur “60 Years of Relais & Châteaux”
The story of our Maison was written alongside that of Relais & Châteaux.
My father, Pierre Troisgros, was an active member of the Association for a
long time. He initiated the development of Relais de Campagne and the
French haute cuisine. This wonderful idea was at the heart of the creation of
Relais Gourmands, a label that identified the Association’s best restaurants,
and promoted the chefs.
Located in Roanne, across from the train station, our property was one of
the few provincial Relais & Châteaux located in a city.
Roanne was - and still is - on the Nationale 7, the “Sun Route” sung and
painted by the greatest artists. In 1954, it was a major axis, a straight NorthSouth line that ran through city and village centres, and created endless
traffic jams during the holidays…
Today, the Nationale 7 plays hide-and-seek with the GPS and any detours
you might wish to make. Trying to follow it could be mind-teasing. You can
still find the twin-lines of plane trees, abandoned service stations, and traces
of the painted ads of the day on the walls of old farms.
After Jean-Baptiste, after Jean and Pierre, after us, our sons César and Léo
will probably take our place…In a short time, in a noble and agricultural
area, not too far from the Roanne train station, our Maison will take a new
form. We’re in the habit of saying that the nice weather follows the Nationale
7. So, I invite you to follow us along the Route du Bonheur…

“The cellar has always been one of the Auberge’s most important places”, says Philippe Dépée. “I like the vineyard
work. Perhaps because like mine, it’s done with love of the place, of the land, and the insistence on excellence”.
On both banks of the Loire River, the Sancerre and Pouilly vineyards offer their most beautiful colours.

When my grandfather Jean-Baptiste decided to move to Roanne in the thirties, the city was flourishing
because of the textile industry. While the textile business may no longer be what it was, we have
remained faithful to the city. Here, the produces are beautiful and varied - between the plain, the
river, the lakes, the forests, and the mountains. Located opposite the train station since 1930, our
Maison will move a few steps away in 2017. Just because tradition, to last, must renew itself…

Devoted to the region, Georges Blanc helped set up a real on-site Bresse poultry farm. A vegetable garden
was also re-created. In 2014, a large exhibition is dedicated to the Bresse enamels worn by fashionable

“Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Relais & Châteaux in Vonnas is even more moving for me as
I’m certainly the last living witness of the first Route de Bonheur drawn together at my uncle’s on
12 May 1954”, reminisces Georges Blanc. The Blanc family not only founded an institution, they
created a village entirely dedicated to the art of living and gastronomy. With over 135,000 bottles,
the property also holds one of the most beautiful cellars in the world.

On this exceptional site of the old Baux quarries, the works of the most prestigious artists are presented.
Filmed in 1959 in Cocteau’s The Testament of Orpheus, the quarries make an extraordinary setting today.
There’s more than 6,000m2 of space where shows are projected, featuring the paintings of Gauguin,
Monet or Van Gogh. In 2014, Klimt and Vienna will have the place of honour.
L’Affectif, le vin de Jean-André Charial
On the Lauzières Estate, in an isolated little valley in the south of the Alpilles, Jean-André Charial
produces a rosé or red wine named “L’Affectif”. Why L’Affectif? This designation goes back to a
conversation with my friend Wolinski about a politician. “He’s driven by the affective”, he told me.
I remembered this term for the first vintage of this new red wine that I adore, and which boasts
notes of prunes, blackberries or red berries.

They say that the famous philosopher who once lived nearby conceived the third part of his monumental
Thus Spoke Zarathustra along path that now bears his name. Following the steps of Friedrich Nietzsche,
you can walk between the low, dry stone walls, and the cypress and bougainvillea trees, all mixed with
the fragrance of myrtle and rosemary. The Mediterranean gives itself freely to a perfect postcard setting.
Rothschild’s Ephrussi Villa, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat
Transformed into a museum by 1938, this magnificent Renaissance-style palace is one of the most impressive
monuments of the French Riviera. A great collector of art, its owner Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild was known
for her refined tastes. Inside the villa, one can still explore the baroness’s living rooms and apartments, that
house an exceptional collection of French porcelain. Be enchanted by one of the nine “remarkable” gardens
(as classified by the Ministry of Culture in 2005), which cover almost seven hectares.
The Maeght Foundation, Saint-Paul-de-Vence
Modern and contemporary art finds its most generous ambassadors here. With this incredible building, Aimé
and Marguerite Maeght provided an exceptional setting for the works of artists like Giacometti, Chagall,
Miro, Léger, and Braque. The Foundation will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and will revisit the
