VICTORIA SKIMBOARDS
“Then and Now”
The coolest thing about
skimboarding is watching a guy
make a board go way, way across
the water without sinking. It is
nothing short of amazing. Every
ripple, bump, and facet of the
water is used to get distance. A
great skimboard, with great
rocker, can make a huge difference, and that is where we come
in.
We are Victoria Skimboards. No
other company can claim more
years of skimboard building and
riding experience than Vic, it is
not even close.
Our retail store, skimboard
museum, offices, warehouse and
shipping are in Laguna Canyon,
just 2 miles from the beach. Our
factory with CNC precision shaping
machine, vacuum tables, with UV
cure production lines, curing
ovens, art department, and
repairs department are located in
San Clemente in the heart of the
surf ghetto, a nationally recognized center of innovation.
Victoria Beach, was where it all
began, is a small cove at the
southern edge of the City of
Laguna Beach. This is the
laboratory for performance and
equipment evolution for 35 years.
The older guys, the Buxtons,
Taylors, and Prietto taught us and
we have been spreading it to the
world since 1976. Our company
name honors the Victoria Beach
watermen that taught us.
Skimboarding, skidboarding, water
discing, or paipo boarding can be
credited to the Hawaiians. They
were into surfing, sand sliding, tea
leaf sliding, mountain sled courses,
and bodysurfing for thousands of
years before anyone else. Paipo
boards, which were wooden
bodyboards with handles, are the
direct link to modern day
skimboards. The ambassador of
surfing, Duke Kahanamoku, spread
this sport all over the world
during his career as an Olympic
swimmer, and skimboarding
hitched a ride.
During the 20’s and 30’s
skimboarding grew to be very
popular as a flat beach sport in
California. Round plywood discs of
all sizes were used to skim on the
thin films of water on very flat
beaches. But Laguna Beach has a
rare combination of steep
topography, steep beaches and
small waves which virtually invited
the skimboarders to redirect their
slides from parallel to the shore to
going more directly into the
shorebreak. The guys in Laguna
Beach took these round boards
and elongated them slightly into
ovals, and that made them
turnable. Voila! A new sport was
born.
Visit http://www.victoriaskimboards.com for news, product updates, team rider information, contests, and more.
Peter Prietto and I were just kids
when we first saw skimboarding.
But while we were growing up, the
idea of making boards came up
many times. When we had both
graduated from college, and had
learned the hardships of manual
labor, through a couple of years of
construction and working in a
sandal factory, we revisited the
idea of making boards. “Sparky”
Anderson, the owner of Rainbow
Sandals, gave us permission to
work part time on our dream, and
still keep our jobs at the sandal
factory. A trip to the lumberyard
downtown and to the fiberglass
supply house in Costa Mesa, a
super smelly glassing session on a
carpeted living room floor, and off
we went to Hobie Sports in Dana
Point with our product. Jack the
manager took them on the spot
and asked for a reorder. We were
off and skimming to modest
profits and loads of fun. Thank
you Rainbow Sandals and Hobie
Sports.
The wood boards were heavy and
hard to turn. It took a very
powerful wave to help you redirect
the board back toward shore. If
you got under one lip, even one
time in a session, it was really
something to crow about. It was
1980 when we first began
experimenting with foam core
skimboards. At first they were
terrible, too stiff, too light and too
small. Over time we refined the
shapes, thickness, and fiberglass to
create boards that were 30% more
surface area and less weight than
the wood boards. Suddenly, a
dozen barrels a session became the
new normal. Skimboarding was
taking off for deeper water and
bigger waves.
And here we are today, some 36
years later, with skimboarding
practiced all over the world in at
least 20 countries. In addition it
has spread to many inland
communities with any thin film of
water now fair game for the
inland skimmers. Sandbars,
flooded fields, ponds, mud flats,
storm channels are the new niches.
Add a rail slide or two and you
have a skim park. Add to this the
recreation boaters who love
skimboards for surfing the wake,
and kite boarders who like the
carvable, but finless shapes and you
have a lot of potential fun.
We knew it was fun when we
started. And that’s why we knew
we could succeed.

FOAMIE
For beginning to intermediate riders, the Foamie is the best value foam core skimboard on the
market today. The Foamie is strong, durable, and has an excellent wave riding shape. The
5/8" thick polyurethane core with fiberglass wrap means this board is practically unbreakable.
Foam core boards are 20% larger and lighter than equivalent wood core boards and many
beginning wave riders choose to skip over the Woody Model and go right to the Foamie Model
instead. A great choice if you’re serious about learning to skimboard.

WOODY
The Woody is for beginners who want to try the sport and is great for learning how to run,
jump, and glide. This is the board we all learned on as kids and the dourable wood construction will hold it's shape and last for generations. The cheaper, pop out wood boards will warp
over time and will not slide unless perfectly flat which is a waste of your money. The Woody
wave art is hand done on every board and every board is made in the USA. Size tip; the rider
should just be able to comfortably hold the board under his or her arm.

Why do I sink before I hit the wave? The
simplest reasons are the wave was too far
out to begin with, the board is too small to
carry you, the curve of the bottom of the
board is too much and you may need a
flatter bottom. Or you just weren't running
fast enough. When you turn the board, you
lose speed. So turn as little as possible.
Approach the wave from a flat angle. Going
straight out to a wave and expecting to
make the turn and ride is back is the worst
CAUTION: Once you start trying to ride
back down the waves you are making a
radical commitment to being thrown
beyond the cushion of water and onto the
hard sand. You must be prepared to get
pitched onto the sand, but avoid this at all
costs. Heavy joint tweaking is possible here
so be mindful of hugging the face of the
wave and not getting too far ahead of the
water. I am a firm believer in the notion of
conservative skimboarding. Conservative
meaning falling as little as possible. So that
my body will last as long as possible before
a major joint failure makes me take up golf
as a full time sport. Showing control and
style in the face of difficulty is the essence
of skimming and most other things as well.
The Grommet is a pro style board (light) at an amazingly low price. This is one hot board!
With newly added sizes for 2012, the Grommet is the perfect transition to the more technical
riding of shuv-its, airs, and more. Enjoy yours today!
RED
Wood boards are excellent for beginners
because they are steady and they glide a
long way across the sand. Plus the novice
is going to abuse the board in the process
of learning how to use it, so why wreck an
expensive foam board if the rider is still
learning the basics of running and jumping
on. Foam boards become valuable once the
rider has started trying to ride out over
deeper water to catch the breaking waves.
Be Safe!!!!! Avoid skimming where people
might get hit by a board. Check the water
for rocks and sandbars before skimming.
Never do flips into shallow water. Keep
control of your board. Don't let the board
get away from you. Learn slowly, don’t run
any faster than you are prepared to fall.
Don't try going into the waves until you
have mastered the basic run, jump-on,and
slide maneuvers. Be responsible and
encourage other skimmers to be responsible
as well. Be courteous to beach goers and
respect the lifeguards wishes. It can only
reflect positively on the reputation of the
sport.
The hop: use your legs and body to the
max. Lift up and push down as you skim
over every little bump in the water. This
will pump you much further out. On the
other hand you don't want to look like a
spastic grasshopper, hopping up and down
and flapping your arms like a mad man.
Keep it smooth. Keep the board flat on
the water. Leaning on the rail to turn
wastes a ton of speed. Touching the water
to turn wastes less energy and keeps the
rails lined up with the turn. Store the
rotation in your torso until you get into
your turn. Let the wave pick you up and
accelerate your board, keep your body firm,
you don't want to collapse down into the
board during the turn. Keep the rear foot
as far back as possible on the tail of the
board. This will give you much more
control in the turns and smooths your
transitions from the sand to the water.
Doing some small turns before the main
turn off the wave helps to establish a feel
for the tail. Your body will follow where
your head is looking. So if you are looking
into the lip of the wave as you start your
turn, then that is where you will end up,
high on the wave. If you want to get in the
barrel, look down there as you start your
turn and that's where you'll end up.
Tele-scoping. As you loose speed, crouch
down lower and lower, this will lighten the
load and prolong the plane. Smooth head
keeps clear vision. Like golf, you must keep
your head still and your eye on the ball.
Same for skimboarding. Be steady and
your vision and depth perception will
improve dramatically.
YELLOW
Find a flat beach with a wide area that is
covered with a 1/4" thin film of water
from the previous wave. We teach
beginners to slide along the shoreline, not
directly into the waves. Some beaches have
cusps which are the crescent shaped cuts in
the shoreline made by the waves. Start
out at the point nearest the ocean and aim
your slide toward the back middle of the
cusp where the beach is flattest. This will
give you a nice long slide before you curve
back toward the ocean. Waves tend to
swoosh up onto the sand. Skimming up
the shoreline and turning off of the swoosh
is called a speed run. This is the safest,
easiest maneuver in skimming. Pick out a
wave coming in that looks like it will have
a good swoosh. Keeping your eye on it, try
to time your slide so you will hit it when it
has just flattened out enough to ride up on.
Start running up the shore, keeping your
eye on the wave, look down long enough to
drop the board and get on, look at the
wave, bend the knees and prepare to ride
up onto it and turn toward the dry sand.
The wood skimboards will not float if a
thin layer of sand has washed over it. At
the end of your slide it is necessary to get
off the board before the sand can cover it.
Just before you stop sliding, kick the board
away from you, back up the slope of the
beach. Then, as you turn to walk up the
slope, the board is easy to grab.
Also, some maintenance is required on all
boards, especially wood boards. Rocks and
sand will wear away the finish and dings
must be patched before the water can
penetrate the wood or foam. Don’t call us if
the board delaminates because of water
damage due to dings not getting fixed soon
enough. Look for water stains regularly,
and patch the holes as soon as possible. Let
the ding dry completely, rough up the area
with sandpaper, mix up some polyester
resin or some 5 minute/2 part epoxy and
spread it over the ding. Use some fiberglass
cloth to do it right. Sand smooth the next
day. Patch the noses of skimboards early,
before the water peels the entire bottom off.
Victoria will send you a basic 1 page guide
to repair techniques if you send us a
stamped, self addressed envelope.
way to approach a wave.
PINK
First, peel off the shipping tabs and
newsletter. Wax the deck with surfboard
wax as this will keep your feet from
slipping. You can also use car wax on the
bottom, this will reduce the wear and tear
from the sand. With adult supervision,
skimboards are a big thrill for kids as
young as 5. They love to push them back
and forth, sliding onto their knees and
gliding across the sand on flat beaches.
And with kid supervision, adults as stiff as
60 are enjoying the sport on a regular
basis.
You must savor and preserve these sleds:
Skimboards hate the heat of direct sunlight
or being in the trunk of a car. The polyester
resin will get so hot that it softens and the
board can change shape. When you are
through skimming, stick the tail in the sand
and point the nose towards the sun to that
as little of the board as possible is directly
facing the sun. A white board is not that
much of a problem, but any dark colored
boards are very vulnerable. Skim-boards
are not unbreakable, if they were, they
would be too heavy. It is not unusual to hit
a wave too hard and snap the board.
COLOR
So you just bought a board, now what?
Skimboarding is a total gas no matter
what your skill level.
1) Full nose- more body surface and planes
out further.
2) Weight- This is very important especially
on east coast. This will allow you to plane out
further and bring you back to the beach
easier. Makes the board more stable as well.
3) Width is wider (Large would be 22in width

Large templates works because you'll be able to
turn faster and not worry about loss of speed
due to the fact that you already made up for
that on the width as well as in added weight
and added thickness.
4) Thickness- 1inch tapered to 3/4 on

5) Rails- Boxy-Will also help to get you back
to the beach (another reason you will get
away with a shorter board for faster turning).
6) PolyVac-Perfect choice for maintaining flex
on a thick board.
7) Rocker-2inches-You don't need anything
less due to the weight and width...and this will
help to get over the smaller wave before
getting to the bigger wave.

MARK II
New to the Vic line up of boards for 2012 we welcome the MARK II. Designed with the help of
long time Victoria family member Mark Mills and shaped by Tex Haines, the Mark II combines
the timeless shape of the Fish with our proven Poly model making a great East Coast performance board. A thicker mid density foam core with added rocker and more body surface area
help a rider plane out farther and bring the board back to the beach easier.
PLANE WRAP EX
Built for the advanced rider, the Plane Wrap EX comes equipped with a 5/8” thick high density
foam core. With a uniform nose to tail core thickness, the Plane Wrap EX is designed to flex
slightly under the riders stance. What we call Dynamic Rocker Technology, is simply another
feel altogether. Wide stance flattens the board for distance, narrowing that stance offers
control during wraps. Lighter due to it's thinner core and epoxy resin, it is a sweet ride for the
rider who can adjust his or her feet.
Victoria Skimboards
The introduction of the Matthieu Thibaud Pro Model in 2011 was a HUGE success all
around the globe. Back for its second year, Matthieu’s board can stand up to the heavy
shorebreak in areas like Laguna Beach and Mexico all the while offering you the ability to
make quick turns and hold your edge on a step face. It is a comforting thing to know that
the board will stay under your feet when you need it. With artwork by Pascal, the
Matthieu Thibaud Pro Model is perfect for you.

performs 100% of the time as he connects the side wash from 10th St. to the Wedge. He
has that in the Morgan Just Pro Model. Perfect for technical tricks and drive on “heavy”
waves, the slightly lower rocker offers speed for the advanced to expert rider to reach those
far out waves.

Bringing technology to the beach was no
small step but the crew at Vic did a great
job setting the table for future events to be
broadcast live over the internet. Year 2011
built on the successes of the previous year
and introduced additional camera angles,
guest announcers, up to date heat information, and a social element that brought over
20,000 viewers worldwide to their computers to watch the best skimboarders compete.
“It is an honor to be a part of tradition”
quoted Victoria WCS Production Manager
Kyle McClure. “These two years have been
monumental for the sport of skimboarding
and are just the beginning.”

Year 2010 witnessed the first live broadcast
of a skimboarding event over the internet
brought to you by the hard working individuals at Victoria. “Our goal was to create
a global viewing audience” stated Victoria
General Manager Trigg Garner. “The sport
of skimboarding is a fantastic one and the
Victoria WCS is the most prestegious contest
on the professional circuit and we wanted to
make it available to everyone.”

In this day and age, computers run everything from stop lights to casinos. As times
have evolved, so has Victoria and with it the
World Championship of Skimboarding (WCS).
AGENT
Welcome the Agent. Designed by team rider and World Wakesurfing Champion Bri Chmel, the
Agent is the newest wake-style skimboard in our board line up. Added width in the swallow tail
provides more volume underneath the back foot allowing you to drop back farther from the
boat and pump out of more tricks. Ride with either the nose or tail forwardand let the added
volume in the tail give you that extra pop on your airs. Equipped with low profile, comfortable
traction, the Agent complements our wake line perfectly.

Brought back by Tyler Palmer and adopted by Tex Haines, this is one of the classic shapes
equivalent to surfing’s fish shapes that are currently in a comeback. Shorter length for
turnability, wider middle and tail increases the planing surface for distance, and a swallow
tail provides control in the turns. It works for me.

CUSTOM BOARD SELECTION CHART
Here at Vic, we take pride in our ability to make you the board that you want. What once started as a custom shop (actually garage)
back in 1976 still handles custom orers with ease as we push forward in 2012.
The Victoria staff is trained in all things skimboarding and able to help you walk through the custom building process. We will make
sure that you get the right board for your riding style and conditions.
There is a basic process that we follow which starts with two questions and then follows the flow chart to the right. The questions are:
1) What skill level are you?
- beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert
2) How much do you weigh?
- this will help us determine what size board to put you on
SPREAD: Aliso Beach in Laguna Beach, CA throwing its backwash around MATTHIEU THIBAUD
Swallow: Loose turning

tail which helps on
weaker waves but
provides less hold on big

Do not fret if this all seems overwhelming, we have it dialed and can easily walk you through the process. Our goal is to make sure
that you walk away with a smile on your face and the best board you could possible have under your arm. Give us a call and let’s get

WHY
VICTORIA?
So, what makes us special? Why
buy a Vic?
Experience of course. We have
made just about every kind of
skimboard, with just about every
material, for an awful lot of great
riders over the years, and we know
what works.
Our stock materials, shapes and
rockers are the best possible
combinations in every price point.
Our craftsmen and designers have
century’s worth of experience
between them, many times more
than any other manufacturer.
History is important, but that’s not
enough. We have never stopped
improving. Between our own team
riders, and our own staff, and 36
years of customer feedback, we are
still a few moves ahead of the rest.
Go green, get a board that lasts. Our breakage rates are tabulated every year and have steadily
declined over the last 10 years. Surprise, surprise, Vic's boards get better every year. That's exactly
what you would expect from us, if you knew us at all. Absolutely, positively, actually, the best
boards on the planet, that aren’t artificially discounted by a independently wealthy manufacturer.
Stop blaming the manufacturers. Most of us know how to glass, we
don't leave out layers of cloth or pull out too much resin, or buy cheap
materials. We know better. Experience still does count. However, a
lack of experience is another matter altogether. New manufacturers don’t
have much experience generally.
Waves break boards. Even a tiny wave can do it. Whenever the board is
touching the sand, it can be pinned and snapped by a relatively small
wave. Don't even get me started on the enormous power of a bigger wave
Here’s another mistake. If a rider penetrates a breaking lip, and then hits
the back of the wave, it is like a double tap. The lip hits the deck and
flexes it, then the board/rider hits the back of the wave and the second
hit pushes the board even further into flex, and it breaks. I’ve done it
myself. It happens.
Re: Carbon fiber vs. E-glass. Wikipedia: “Fiberglass is a lightweight, extremely strong, and robust
material. Although strength properties are somewhat lower than carbon fiber and it is less stiff, the
material is typically far less brittle, and the raw materials are much less expensive.” Carbon is clearly
not as strong as our competitors claim. Truth.

commitment for us. It’s simple.
We want to give back to the sport.
We strive to create as level a
playing field as we can, and ensure
that we find the best riders, on
that particular weekend. Recently
we have invested heavily in broadcasting the contest live via the web.
We support a large cadre of
accomplished team riders. Most
with product discounts, some with
modest salaries. Helping them
travel to events is another big
commitment for us.
We donate boards to many education and arts fundraisers, and we
support Zero Trash, which is a
campaign to adopt your local beach
and street and pick up trash.
We have pioneered the reuse of
foam remnants into new boards,
drastically reducing our contribution to the landfill. Our polyester
process utilizes a UV-light cure
process that reduces our styrene
levels by 95%.
