This winter quarter, the Psi chapter passed through an amazing candidate class
of what are now 19 new active Brothers. We were able to fit the entire candidate process
into winter quarter, starting with First Degree on January 14.
At First Degree, we welcomed the following candidates into our new membership education process: Anthony Sanchez, a first year clarinet, Bill Faught, a first year
horn, Brad Scott, a first year tenor sax, Briana Popeney, a second year tenor sax, Cameron Lundy, a first year clarinet, David Ross, a third year trumpet, Derek Wun, a first year
tenor sax, Eric Crose, a first year trumpet, Freesia Quezada, a first year alto sax, Gus
Johannsen, a third year clarinet, Jacob Ferrin, a third year alto sax/drum major, Jason
Moore, a graduate student trumpet, Josh Epport, a first year tenor sax, Kelsey Chesnut,
a first year trombone, Kevin Hudson, a first year trumpet, Kim Bowen, a first year tenor

The candidates had weekly meetings led by the Vice President Trevor Hershberger which featured guest presentations from both actives and alumni. They learned about the national history of Kappa Kappa Psi, the Psi chapter history,
the history of Tau Beta Sigma and Epsilon Kappa, and much more. One of the additions to the candidate process was the
learning of the Brotherhood/Sisterhood Song, written last year by Brendan Homnick. Beta Xi learned the B/S Song jointly
with Epsilon Kappa’s candidate class of Alpha Omicron, which planted the seeds of strong Brotherhood/Sisterhood relations.
Second Degree was on February 13, following an exciting weekend of California State Days which Psi and EK
hosted. Beta Xi’s social committee, led by Cameron Lundy, planned the annual Post Second Degree party jointly with
Alpha Omicron. Their theme was “U-Sea-L-A”, which meant underwater themed decorations and nautical themed family
costumes. Some of the creative costume ideas included penguins with bow ties, sharks with lasers attached to their heads,
and jellyfish made out of shower caps.

The service committee, headed by Gus Johannsen, built new sheds for the Penske truck that the Equipment Crew
uses during marching season. Gus, a member of the equipment crew, knew that the shelves were falling apart and becoming dangerous, so this necessity became a perfect opportunity for a service project for the candidate class. They worked
together over the course of a few days to build the new shelves. Candidates with time conflicts and weren’t able to make it
to the shelve-building came to an active service project to help us paint the cave.
Furthering our bond with the Sisters, the candidates had a joint B/S committee, headed by Tim Jewell, and they planned
a joint game night with the Alpha Omicron candidates. They went over to an active Brother’s apartment to play games and
eat candy. Highlights from the night included eating giant Pixy Sticks, playing UCLA monopoly, and having so much fun
that the kitchen window got fogged up (I saw it myself!).
Beta Xi also hosted a very ambitious fundraiser, which was planned by their fundraising committee and headed by
Eric Crose. Beta Xi hosted a Battle of the Bands, which took place on February 26th in the Popper Theater. They recruited
bands from all over the Los Angeles area to compete for a gift card to Guitar Center. Bands ranged from established bands
performing at Spring Sing, to a band that performed live for the first time ever, to impromptu groups featuring both candidates and actives. The concert proved to be a great success, the candidate class raised a net profit of $250, which will either
be used to purchase new mellophone cases or will be put towards the Psi chapter’s current fundraising project of buying a
soprano saxophone for the saxophone studio.

At last, after Final Interviews, Final Vote, and a bit of a scramble for the candidates to finish their required interviews, we initiated the Beta Xi class into the Brotherhood on March 6th. Degree was followed by the signing of our large
family tree, many pictures, and a joint ceremony with the newly initiated Sisters of Alpha Omicron. New and old actives,
alumni, and district guests joined together to sing our B/S Song and the separate hymns, followed by family dinners at various locations including The Cheesecake Factory, a Cuban restaurant called Versailles, and Glendon Restaurant in Westwood. We welcomed Beta Xi to their first chapter meeting on March 7th, and we know that great things are awaiting our
chapter with the addition of this spectacular group of Brothers.

DLC
Robyn Monroe, BN
Although only a few of us attended District Leadership Convention this year, DLC was an extremely enjoyable
and instructional event for those of us who attended. Having
never been myself, as this is my first year being and active
Brother, I had no idea what to expect from DLC, nor how
much fun it truly would be. Upon arriving, the group of us
from the Psi Chapter met with Brothers and Sisters from
other chapters, and slowly started to make friends. We partook in the various “ice-breaker” activities that night, such as
a giant game of Twister, guessing celebrities, and more. The
following day was a day of service, bonding, and Brotherhood/Sisterhood. Our service projects included organizing

the uniform closet, painting stands, and cleaning the practice
rooms. After such a day of fulfillment and purpose, all of the Brothers and Sisters were energized and spirited. Much of
the day was also spent in workshops, learning about leadership and how better to communicated within our chapters. This
knowledge was invaluable, in that it pointed out what the true qualities of leadership are, and reminded us how better to
fulfill the purposes we swore to uphold when we became Brothers and Sisters.
DLC was not just a learning tool for all of those who attended, but rather a beautiful bond that brought us all together as chapters, and as a district of talented, wonderful people. Having never been to one before, and having been only
a candidate at Western District Convention last year, I knew very little District people, and had no idea yet what goes into
being a successful chapter. Being a successful chapter doesn’t mean you have a high attendance rate or a large amount of
members. Being a successful chapter doesn’t mean you hang out with your brothers a lot and proudly wear your letters all
the time. Being a successful chapter is doing all of this, while always remembering the purposes of the fraternity or sorority,
and always striving for the highest. After DLC this year, I plan to always strive for the highest.

Spring Sing

Spring Sing is a big chance for Bruins to show off their talents and school spirit. This year a group of brothers
from Psi, sisters from EK, and other members of the band put their talents together to perform “Bruinterviewin’,” a UCLA
themed rendition of the musical Grease. The show told the story of a Bruin graduate being interviewed for a job. The
interviewer asks questions about his UCLA experience which the grad answers through the magic of song and dance. He
eventually lands the job over the other applicant, a U$C Trojan (hisssss). Those involved with the show put in several
hours of rehearsing songs, choreography, and dialogue, which often took place at the bottom of parking structure DD
on UCLA’s campus. The audition came near the ides of January and the band put on a spectacular show for the audition
panel. Unfortunately, the judges did not give the band a spot in this year’s Spring Sing (their loss). Nevertheless, the band
did an amazing job this year, much to the hard work of EK sister Helen Durand and Psi brother Michael Bright.
Know Your Brothers

Allison Cardoso
Allie Cardoso is a sophomore and Environmental Science major with a concentration in environmental engineering. Her hometown is San Diego. She is from
the fraternal class of Beta Nu and plays the alto sax and bass clarinet. In fifth
grade she played clarinet for the sole purpose of being able to play bass clarinet in 6th grade middle school band. She also played bass clarinet all through
middle school and high school and would have continued in college had we
marched bass clarinets. She also said she learned saxophone for the UCLA
marching band because she really wanted to be able to play a new instrument.
She also tried to learn how to play the piano, but was apparently horrible at it.
She is currently the Historian and is in the process of trying to make a Psi time
capsule. About the time capsule, she says, “Although it’s still in its early stages,
I hope that it will be both fun and educational for our chapter”. Three words
she would describe herself as are “relaxed, quirky, dorky”. She says, “my favorite color shall remain anonymous
for fear of being beaten” . Her favorite movie is Howl’s Moving Castle, favorite book series is the Abhorsen trilogy, and favorite food is lobster and seafood. She likes playing “Bad Romance” in pep band because she thinks
Lady Gaga is freaking amazing. Outside of the band flap, she really enjoys listening to Cheryl Cole’s ‘Parachute’
and Edward Maya’s ‘Stereo Love”. They are currently her two favourite songs. Her favourite annual fraternal
event is Beach House! The best/most exciting moment in chapter in the last year for her was chapter broomball.
For the future she is most excited to watch the Beta Xi class grow and become as involved in the chapter as the
rest of us are.

Josh Epport
Josh Epport is a new active from the Beta Xi class. He is a first year and PreEconomics major from Los Angeles. He has played the tenor sax for eight years
now, but wants to play and learn the tuba and/or the horn. He had played his
saxophone all four years of high school marching band, three years in the El
Segundo Community, and six years in the Colburn School of Performing Arts
Wind Ensemble. His favorite colour is blue, favourite movie is “The Godfather”, favourite book is “The Godfather”, and favourite food is steak. His favorite song to play is “Jungle Love” and favourite song to listern to is “A Day
in the Life” by the Beatles. In three words he would describe himself as “Very
Enthusiastic, Indeed”. The most exciting event for him was becoming an active
and passing through Third Degree! His favourite annual fraternal event so far
is State Days, and what he is looking forward most to in the future is the opportunity to contribute as much as possible to the chapter and to have his own little brother to “raise and to care.”
Robyn Monroe
Robyn Monroe is a second year, economics and geography major who plays
the flute. Her fraternal class is Beta Nu and she is from Huntington Beach.
When asked to describe herself in three words she said she was “crazy and
fun-loving”. Her favourite colour is purple, favourite movie is “V for Vendetta”, favourite book is “Pride and Prejudice, and favourite food(s) is anything Asian. She loves to listen to The Star Trek Soudtrack (most recent).
Her favourite musical piece to play is Second Suite in Eb by Holst. The most
exciting moment in chapter during the past year for her was becoming active. Her favourite annual fraternal event is Beach House. She is most looking
forward to seeing the new actives grow and become more active in chapter.

Brotherhood Moment
Trevor Hershberger, BM
My Big Brother Jess saved my life. Literally. I have Type One
Diabetes, and one cold day sophomore year I ran out of supplies
for my insulin pump. I had some on order, but they couldn’t arrive
sooner than in three days, because they ship from Chicago and for
whatever reason, these particular medical supplies can’t be rushed!
I spent the day on the phone with my parents, the medical company, and anyone else I could think of who could help. I finally remembered I had the business card of a woman who was
a representative of my medical supplies company. I thought she
might have samples, so I gave her a call. No response. I left a voicemail and continued with my day, with the inevitably climbing blood
sugar levels that would set in by late evening in the back of my mind.
Fortunately for me, chapter meeting was that night. During meeting, I got a call from the company representative. She told
me she had some sample supplies, but that I would have to drive to her in Santa Monica to pick them up. Santa Monica
wasn’t terribly far, but I didn’t have a car either. I returned to the meeting room and during “other business” time in our
agenda, I asked whether anyone could drive me to this woman’s house to pick up medical supplies. Imagine my joy when
my big bro’s hand shot up without a half-second’s hesitation. I was saved! But that’s not the end of the experience.
When we reached her apartment after some searching in the dark neighborhood, the representative wouldn’t
answer her phone! Jess and I waited in her orange VW Beetle for what felt like hours (and nearly reached an hour!). We
passed the time discussing clever ways of remembering science-y things that went over my head, watching the Schwetty
Balls SNL sketch (my favorite holiday short of all time!) on an iPod, and calling the pump supplies lady over twenty times
without answer as Jess patiently waited with me on the side of that street.
Finally, my representative called back after myriad calls and voicemails, not to mention minutes, and apologized
- she had been entertaining a guest and didn’t hear my calls! But fortunately, she had a week’s worth of supplies for me,
which I was able to use as soon as Jess dropped me off at the front door of my dormitory emotionally relieved.
Several brothers’ hands went up when I asked for help that night. But it was my big bro’s that shot up first, without a
moment’s hesitation. Her love and support have meant so much to me over the last couple of years, and I will never forget
this particular Brotherhood Moment that we shared.

Alanah Nowotarski
Alanah Nowotarski is a second year communication major from the Beta Nu
fraternal class. She plays the horn in the marching band. In terms of musical
background, she has been playing the piano for nine years, horn for five years,
and occasionally picks up the trumpet to see what happens. She is an avid member of the Historical Committee, which she describes as awesome, and enjoys
arts and crafts and silly chat sessions. She was born and raised in Carol Stream,
Illinois but went to high school in Cave Creek, Arizona. Three words she would
use to describe herself as are indecisive, compassionate, and open-minded. Her
favourite movie is “Little Miss Sunshine,” favourite book is “Cat’s Cradle” by
Kurt Vonnegut, and favourite food is garlic bread. Her favorite song to play
is “Ruby, My Dear” by Thelonious Monk (on the piano) and favorite artist to
listen to is Ella Fitzgerald. Her favourite annual fraternal event is Beach House.
The best/most exciting moment in chapter for her in the last year was Active Night 2011 because she said it was
so enlightening and a great way to enhance the bond between brothers. She is also excited to see what all our
new Beta Xi Brothers can bring to the organization because she says “They’ve already been so impressive!”

California State Days

In the midst of a hectic Beta Xi candidate process, mountains of school work, and gigs left and right, the Psi chapter
of Kappa Kappa Psi and the Epsilon Kappa chapter of Tau Beta Sigma still had the time and dedication to put on and host
an extraordinary California State Days. With a turnout of over 120 people, it is sure to be a memorable weekend for all who
came.
The first night was started with a game night in which brothers
could mingle with other chapters as they pleased and break the ice before the big day of activities. As is tradition, just about everyone played
at least one game of Combat Uno before bedtime was called around
10pm. Saturday morning was started off early with a nice breakfast and
a breakdown of the day. All activities were judged by our two referees, Derek Lee (Beta Mu) and Ashley McFadden (Alpha Mu), who put
in tremendous amounts of their time to make sure that this weekend
went as smoothly as possible. Everyone was a assigned a team and given
their ‘balloon baby’, which they were to guard and nurture until the end
of the day where points would be awarded based on various categories.
Various challenges included a water balloon toss, paper plate relay,
jeopardy, wheel barrel race, ice cream sundae relay, a scavenger hunt, and Referees Ashley and Derek give Team Burgundy their

poster making. During lunch time, Psi and Epsilon Kappa did a profit share
and sold bag lunches. Half of the money went back to the Western District as a fundraiser. During the down time, people
went to the basketball gig or watched it in a brother or sister’s apartment if they couldn’t get tickets.
Sunday morning, those who were left at UCLA did a trip to the Promenade. The weekend came to a close with
Alpha Omicron and Beta Xi’s second degree. All in all, the weekend yielded new and stronger bonds between the chapters
that will continue to grow throughout the year and beyond.

Bruin Basketball Update

Is Josh Smith really a gentle giant with violent dunking ability? Does Nikki Caldwell’s team ever lose? Was Tyler Trapani’s lay-up a gift from John Wooden
himself? And how does Darxia Morris always seem to make important shots? If
these names sound unfamiliar, you clearly haven’t been keeping up with the UCLA
Bruin Basketball teams. This year has been a notable one for UCLA basketball,
mostly because the legendary Pauley Pavilion is holding one final season of basketball before getting a much-needed face lift. But it’s also been notable as a comeback season for the men’s team, and a record-setting season for the women’s team.
After starting out 3-4, the men’s team got an important win over BYU at the
first Wooden Classic since John Wooden passed away, and since then the team has
come together and played extremely well. Fueled by the intensity of Reeves Nelson,
the calming presence of Lazeric Jones, the consistency of Malcolm Lee, the athleticism of Tyler Honeycutt, and the dominant power of Josh Smith, the team is now 22-9,
second in the Pac-10, and looking to make some noise in the NCAA Tournament.
However, all the victories (including big victories over rival USC and Steve
Lavin-coached St John’s in a single week) pale in comparison to the final home win
against the University of Arizona. As the last men’s game in “old” Pauley Pavilion,
a roaring crowd and numerous members of former basketball teams watched the
Bruins dominate Arizona 71-49. And the last Bruin basket scored at Pauley PavilFreshman Josh Smith goes up for a dunk |

great-grandson. It was a magical climax to a much-improved season for the Bruins.
But this team isn’t even UCLA’s best basketball team right now. That honor goes to Coach Nikki
Caldwell’s team. The ladies are an incredible 26-3 this
year and ranked in the top ten in the country. The Bruins have used an in-your-face defense, toughness from
forward Jasmine Dixon, and clutch shooting by Darxia Morris to improve in all aspects from last season.
Excluding two losses against an elite Stanford team,
UCLA’s only loss came in December, by two points, and
since then they have been nearly perfect. The Bruins also
got their first win in five years at USC’s Galen Center,
where nearly 100 band members traveled to cheer the
women on to completing a season sweep of the Trojans.
In the last home game of the season on March 5,
UCLA started off with a 25-4 run and cruised to a 66-48
win in the last basketball game ever at Pauley Pavilion.

Coach Caldwell ended her post-game interview with a
shout-out to the band, which was much appreciated by all of us. We have grown to love this team, as they always appreciate
our presence (seriously, we’re better than the Den) and play their hearts out. Both basketball teams have made us proud this
year, and hopefully will continue to do so through March Madness.

Brotherhood/Sisterhood Moment
Helen Papadopoulos
I’ve always felt reasonably close to my Big Sister, Krystina Johnson,
but in the past couple of weeks our bond has deepened and strengthened
enormously. I recently switched instruments from tenor sax to trumpet
(which Krystina plays) and I have to admit I was very apprehensive about
the move- I didn’t know many people who played trumpet, I didn’t know
any of the music, and I was worried about being accepted into the section.
However, this was the most painless transition thanks to my big. Krystina was a pillar of support and understanding for me. She went above and
beyond what anyone would ask--teaching me her little tricks for remembering the music, telling me of all the important trumpet traditions, standing next to me at every gig and helping with visuals, even holding my music for me so I could read it! These last few games have been some of the
most fun in my time here at UCLA. I feel like I’ve gotten so much closer
to Krystina, and we’re both really excited to be taking a class together next
quarter! Coming from a mostly Psi-oriented section, I was used to sharing my band experience with brothers, but I hadn’t
really felt the brother/sister bonds during games before. I feel so lucky and honored to be able to share this with my big,
and I’m sad we only have a quarter left together. This has been an incredible experience that I can’t imagine without the
strong inter-organizational relationship that our two chapters share. These bonds are without measure, and I wouldn’t give
them up for the world.
Brian Bauman
Brian Bauman is a 5th year Classical Civilization major. He is in the Beta Mu fraternal class and plays the snare drum. He hails from San Diego but spent a lot of
time in Pullman, WA. Three words he would use to describe himself are creative,
random, and funny. He started playing the clarinet in 6th grade but switched to
percussion after moving from Pullman to San Diego. He picked up guitar at 12
when his parents said a drumset would be too loud and there’s not enough room.
He took guitar lessons for about 4 years. For marching, he started out on bass
drum in high school and then moved to snare. He then played snare for 2 years
in high school and one year in college for SDSU’s marching band (but didnt go
to SDSU). He played cymbals for two years in UCLA’s band and then moved to
snare. He also plays self taught piano. His favourite movies are “The Big Lebowski” and “Mystery Men”, favorite book(s) are Brian Jacque’s Redwall series, and
favourite food is sushi! His favorite song to play on guitar is “Master of Puppets” by Metallica, and on piano is
“Zanarkand” by Nobuo Uematsu. His favorite band is “METALLICA!!!”. His favorite annual fraternal event is
Beach House because he says “It’s a great opportunity to spend time with brothers without distractions. I always
feel closer to everyone after beach house”. In the future he is looking forward to coming back to degrees as an
alumnus and see family trees grow.

Alumni,
My name is Jowilyn Estrada and I will be your 2011 Alumni Relations Officer! I am a second year Electrical Engineering major from Dublin, California. I play the clarinet in the marching band, and I joined Kappa
Kappa Psi last spring with the Beta Nu class. After Rekha decided to resign, I was elected as ARO during our
second meeting of the quarter. I hope the transition was seamless from your perspective.
First of all, I want to apologize for the general lack of events this past quarter. When I took this office, I
focused more on the Encore than anything else. Additionally, with basketball season and our candidate process,
it was extremely difficult to plan anything. I was able to squeeze in a few Dinners for Brothers during tenth
week, and I want to thank those who hosted for coping with my many emails attempting to establish a date. I
also want to thank those who hosted Dinner for Candidates. These were the first events that I planned, and I
realize that they were not very organized. I was extremely glad to hear that they went well, and the Beta Xi class
enjoyed spending time with alumni.
For Spring 2011, one of my goals is master event-planning. I would like to plan events more evenly
spaced throughout the quarter. I also want to work with the other officers to have more alumni participation
in a few social, fundraising, or service events. We will have Alumni Workshops next quarter, and the annual
Spring Alumni Barbecue on May 21st, so keep an eye on your email for more information.
Finally, and most importantly, my goal is to keep up good communications with Psi alumni so that they
still feel connected and involved with Chapter happenings. I know that this is my most important duty as ARO,
so don’t hesitate to let me know how I’m doing. If you ever have any feedback, questions, or concerns, please
