We’ve Only Just Begun
Tap Factory
We’ve Only Just Begun is a celebration
of the Carpenters’ music and the
spirit of Karen Carpenter. Every song
in the show, a chart hit, is brilliantly
performed by vocalist Toni Lee,
with her Big Band and singers. Close
your eyes and re-live the magic of
one of the greatest female voices
in pop music. The hits include
Close To You, We’ve Only Just Begun,
Superstar, For All We Know, I Won’t
Last a Day Without You, Goodbye to
Love, Yesterday Once More, Top of the
World and more.
Tap Factory is a tremendously visual,
highly exciting show, bringing the very
best performers to the stage as they
blend their art of percussion with dance
and acrobatics.
Talking Scarlet presents
In Praise of Love
by Terence Rattigan
An almost unbearably moving story
of veiled emotions running deep, In Praise of Love is based on the true
life situation of Rex Harrison’s wife,
Kay Kendall.
Lydia is shielding her husband,
Sebastian, from the knowledge that
she is dying from leukaemia. But
Sebastian does know and is seeking
to spare her. She dies without either
of them openly acknowledging their
true feelings...
“Few dramatists of this century have
written with more understanding of
the human heart than Terence
Rattigan” Michael Billington

Beethoven’s seventh symphony was
one of the composer’s most popular
works from its first performance. The four movements have a joyous
energy which generates enormous
power. Schubert’s last symphony is
possibly his greatest masterpiece in
any form, a supremely lyrical and
imaginative work. “The appearances

Rossini W

Stabat Mater
New London Sinfonia
David Gibson conductor
Basingstoke Choral Society with
Croydon Philharmonic Choir
Rossini completed his opera William Tell in 1829, making it his
36th in nineteen years. The overture
has become his best-known work
due to an indelible association with The Lone Ranger TV series.
His Stabat Mater was first performed
in Paris in 1842 to great acclaim.
Three of the movements had to be
repeated to quieten the cheers from
the audience. The solemn text, a
devotional poem about the Virgin
Mary, could not be in greater contrast
to the unashamedly theatrical style
of the work, with its beautiful and
gloriously uplifting music.
Rita sings original mountain roots
music with a voice that really grabs your attention, a kind of cross
between the haunting delivery of
Gillian Welch and the richness of Iris
Dement. Come Sunrise, her 2009
album, launched her onto the national
Americana scene, spending four
months in the US Folk chart top 20.

country-folk traditionalist

got the recognition she deserves” R2 Magazine

Dennis Russell Davies conductor
Philip Glass’ Cello Concerto no. 2
contains intense and elegiac music
distilled from the soundtrack to the
film in its subtitle. This performance is given by the same cellist and
conductor that gave the piece its
world premiere last year and have just
recorded it to great acclaim. John
Adams’ spectacular Harmonielehre was triggered by a dream he had of a supertanker suddenly taking flight.
It was a breakthrough piece in which
the composer arrived at a new and
confident means of expression,
culminating in an exhilarating “tidal wave of brass and percussion.”

The Robert Cray Band returns to the UK, to celebrate its 40th
anniversary.
Pam Ayres brings her latest show to
The Anvil following the recent
publication of her new book of
poetry, You Made Me Late Again!,
copies of which she will be signing
after the show.
For forty years Robert Cray has laid down track after track of goodtime, uptown, low-down blues. He’s won five Grammys and been
nominated for 11 more.
Cray helped to shape the blues on the national scene in the 1980s
with his breakthrough album Strong Persuader in 1986. His soulful
and creative guitar work has been a dominant force in blues. Over
the years Cray’s musical influence has been recognised and
acknowledged.
Pam Ayres’ work is funny, and
approachable. It sounds simple, as
though dashed off, but this is
deceptive. Her hair-trigger timing,
her eye for the detail of everyday life,
and for the absurdity therein, makes
for an art that hides art.
With support from Azadeh.

Dvořák’s Cello Concerto possesses
an unceasing flow of invention and
lyricism unmatched even by this
composer. Suk’s orchestral portrait
of Prague pictures it emerging from
morning mist, with contrasting
themes recalling both episodes from
its history and the composer’s own
life there, before ending in a blaze of
glory. Janáček’s striking Sinfonietta
grew into his greatest orchestral
work, a confident portrait of “the
contemporary free man” that the
composer hoped would thrive in his newly independent homeland.
A spectacular new live show – featuring two stars from BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, Pasha Kovalev and Katya Virshilas.
Pasha and Katya are joined by four guest dancers, all beautifully costumed, to present a series of stunning dance routines, accompanied by a full audio-visual backdrop and light show, the ever enjoyable Q & A section, and an appearance by a local dance school.

Apollo Theatre Company presents
by Nina Bawden
adapted for the stage by Emma Reeves
directed by Tim Astley
“It’ll be such fun, living in the
country. You’ll love it!”
When the Second World War air
raids threaten their safety in the city,
Carrie Willow and her brother Nick
are evacuated to a small village in
the Welsh countryside. Billeted with
the kind but timid Auntie Lou and
her miserly brother, Mr Evans, the
children quickly learn that this is a
place unlike any they have ever
known and begin to discover the
joys, and terrors, the countryside
possesses. From the whispering
woods of Druid’s Grove to the
harvest fields, the children get to
know and love their new world and
the characters that inhabit it; the
aging, glamorous Mrs Gotobed, Mr
Johnny, who speaks a language all
of his own, and Hepzibah Green, the
mysterious housekeeper with her
tales of magic and wonder and a
terrifying curse…
The Anvil
with Pete Brown, Phil Capaldi, Ben Lee and Mike Nichols
Joe, with his five piece band
including his son, record producer
Pete Brown, will be on stage all
evening and the musical styles
incorporated in to this new show are as unique as the man himself.
Packed with timeless classics,
rockabilly, gospel, country, folk and
rock ‘n’ roll, all interwoven with Joe’s
effervescent delivery and humorous
reminiscences, this sensational show

Surfin’ USA, starring BBC’s Strictly
Come Dancing lead singer, Chris
Madin, backed by an incredible live band, pays tribute to one of the greatest bands of all time, The Beach Boys.
Strauss Four Last Songs
Bruckner Symphony no. 9
Eva-Marie Westbroek soprano
Christoph von Dohnányi conductor
The Beach Boys had over eighty
songs chart worldwide, and sold
over 100 million records.
Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs
sum up his lifelong love of the
soprano voice in music of rare and
heartwarming beauty. The final
pieces the composer wrote, their
world premiere was given by this
orchestra in 1950. Bruckner’s
majestic Ninth Symphony was also
his last work, left unfinished at his
death. The first movement arises,
like that of Beethoven’s Ninth, from
a mysterious beginning, the second
is a nightmarish scherzo, and the
final slow movement is the most
beautiful and profound music the
composer ever wrote.
Chris Madin and the Surfin’ USA
band bring those wonderful songs,
energy and fun back to life. Don’t
miss out on this stunning recreation
of an iconic sound.
The Ballad of Martha Brown
“Vivid theatricality and inventiveness” The Guardian
Expect the unexpected in Angel Exit’s latest original drama based on the life
and times of Martha Brown, the last woman publicly hanged in Dorset.
1856. A tale of jealousy and passion. An ordinary woman and her ordinary
husband, a hatchet grabbed in haste, a murder, an accused horse, a black silk dress, and the mob at the hang-fair who gawp in glee.
Presented in the company’s rich visual style, blending storytelling and
striking physicality, this show is spliced through with wicked humour, an original score and macabre songs.

follows Shen Te, a young prostitute, as she struggles to lead a life that is
deemed “good” by the gods; which her fellow citizens of Szechwan merely
pay lip service to. Once again, the Basingstoke Youth Theatre returns to the
Haymarket stage with an epic tale for the Basingstoke Festival, giving life to
the alter-ego Shen Te adopts to protect her own interests.
Utilising both music and physical theatre, this interpretation of The Good
Person of Szechwan demonstrates how society can change to solve the
social and economic problems we face. How can a good person thrive in a
world that is not good... only you can decide!
