Had something all written up about Bike Week, getting
out and riding, how great it is that the spring riding season is
here… Then everything changed in the blink of an eye. The
news of Kimmy’s death has traveled far and wide. We’ll be
able to talk more about this in the next edition, plus updates
on her man Tapper are on a variety of websites.
Making a sad situation worse, hers is not the only life
lost. Over these past 2 weeks, 3 riders {who we know of}
have died; Kimmy, Allan Wynn on 3/28, and Mark Hill on
4/2. Plus others have been injured in wrecks. It cannot be
said often or strongly enough to watch out for the cagers.
Actually, from our experience, there are a lot of drivers
out there who do see us. But at times when we are feeling
the impact of learning about our fellow riders who are killed
or injured, it can be difficult to believe. It only takes those
careless, inattentive few to change the world forever.
And within our own ranks, it cannot be stressed enough
that riders must know and accept their limitations.

ABATE Founder Passes ~ In Memory of Wes Erickson
Our ABATE Family lost one of
our great people. I am sadden to notify our members that Wes Erickson
has passed away. Wes was one of
the founders of ABATE. Without the
dedication of Wes and his “brothers”
ABATE might have never been. We
will miss his wisdom and of course
his crazy sense of humor! I am sure
Wes is already riding with the brothers and sisters that have passed before him. God Speed Wes.
Wesly Erickson, 71, born in Bottineau, raised in Maxbass, a brilliant man, Founding President of
ABATE of North Dakota, avid motorcycle, race-car and ultra-lite enthusiast, lost his battle with cancer
at his home in Phoenix, Ariz. With
the Lord’s blessing, Wes joined his
Father, Fredrick and Mother, Charlotte, and siblings, Jere and Mark at
the gates of heaven. To the end he
was with his beautiful, loving wife,
Elaine, of 48 years. He also leaves
behind his children, Twila (Chris)
Schamer, and their children, Jacob
and Danielle, and LeNita (David)
Del
Mar
Leather Apparel
Fitzgerald, and their children, Mikayla, Mariah and Tyler.
A Service with Military Honors
will take place, in Bismarck, this
summer followed by a motorcycle
procession and life celebrating reception, details to be announced on
his Legacy.com website, http://memorialwebsites.legacy.com/weserickson/Homepage.aspx.
Thanks to Phoenix Hospice of
the Valley, we could not have navigated this journey without your
compassionate direction. We would
also like to extend a special thanks
to Robin Graham, who has been our
“Angel on Earth” during the last four
weeks. Words will never be enough
to express our gratitude for what you
have done.
Wes is survived by his siblings
Verna Valek, Marilyn Nagel, Richard
Erickson, Mary Summers and Robin
Graham.
Daddy, we miss you so much but
are so very thankful you are free
from pain and we know you are riding heavens highways and flying with
new wings.
Due to his health conditions prior
to the cancer, Wes was not able to obtain Life insurance. If you are so inclined, donations are being accepted
at Wells Fargo under account number
945366970~Wesly Erickson Memorial Fund or you may send them through
Paypal to drerickson@live.com.
Thank you for your love, prayers
and support.

From Military To Civilian – A Seamless Transition
When members of the Armed Forces of the United States finish at least
one year of their tour of deployment they need to enroll in the Veterans
Administration (VA) program to obtain any VA Health Benefits they
may be entitled to receive. Service members need to enroll
PROMPTLY and do it NOW by following these steps:
Located in Surprise, AZ ➬ at Grand and the 303
by appointment only

motorcycle & automotive
service ♦ repair ♦ special builds ♦ accessories ♦

•
Obtain a copy of your service medical records prior to discharge. Do not take any shortcuts when separating and do this immediately. Any idea of hurrying to get home may cost you time and money
should you require VA Healthcare at any time in the future.
•
A veteran has two years, after separation, to apply for medical
conditions that are a result of their service in the military. After two years
the process becomes more difficult.
•
If you require medical assistance from the VA after separation/discharge, bring with you a copy of your medical records, a copy
of your DD-214, and two forms of picture identification.
•
Any injury or illness incurred while serving on active duty as a
regular, reservist, or Federalized member of the National Guard needs to
be noted in your medical records.
•
Enroll in the VA IMMEDIATELY. Do Not Procrastinate!!
Know your rights and your responsibilities. If you are not sure, ASKASK-ASK-ASK-ASK!!! Ensure that your transition is smooth. Know
what you need to do, and DO IT!
•

Mesa 81 Spring Break Out
The Mesa 81 Spring Break Out was
held on Saturday March 19 at RUB Sports
Grill, located at 2103 W Guadalupe Rd.
in Mesa. That’s at Dobson & Guadalupe.
Bikers rolled in from all around the Valley, east and west, to show their support
to Mesa’s Hell’s Angels MC and get together with like-minded brothers and
sisters. This was just a plain and simple
good time.
It was a beautiful day to be out riding;
so there was a turnover of scoots in the
parking lot as riders were coming and going throughout the afternoon. There was a
bike wash area set up. The band ‘Krunch’

was putting out good covers of standard
and current rock tunes.
RUBs has a cool set up, with the indoor area opening out to a large airy enclosed patio. Smokers and non-smokers
can be pretty comfortable, together in essentially the same area, to visit and listen
to the music. Nicely done.
We observed some 25 clubs & organizations represented this day including ABATE, ALMA {American Latino
Motorcycle Ass’n}, American Legion
Riders, Cerberus, Desert Eagles, Desert
Thunder, Devils Own, HOG, Hooligans,
Leather & Lace {LHRA}, Leathernecks,

No disrespect to the organizers who
put together events for all the righteous
causes that bikers support throughout the
year; but it’s kinda nice, once in a while,
to go to a gathering that is just a party to
have a party.
Thanks guys, for a good afternoon.

A dedicated Teamsters union worker was attending a convention in Las
Vegas and decided to check out the local brothels. When he got to the
first one, he asked the Madam, “Is this a union house?”
“No”, she replied, “I’m sorry it isn’t.”
“Well, if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?”
“The house gets $80 and the girls get $20,’”she answered.
Offended at such unfair dealings, the union man stomped off down the
street in search of a more equitable, hopefully unionized shop. His search
continued until finally he reached a brothel where the Madam responded,
“Why yes sir, this is a union house. We observe all union rules.”
The man asked, “And, if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?”
“The girls get $80 and the house gets $20.”
“That’s more like it!” the union man said.
He handed the Madam $100, looked around the room, and pointed to a
stunningly attractive green-eyed blonde. “I’d like her,” he said.
“I’m sure you would, sir,” said the Madam. Then she gestured to a
92-year old woman in the corner, “but Ethel here has 67 years
seniority and according to union rules, she’s next.”

Advertiser Review: Cycle ReCycle MC
Cycle Recycle MC offers a unique
and practical service in these tough
economic times. This is a consignment
shop for all things biker-related. They
accept parts, accessories, apparel, and
biker swag in good selling condition.
You get an excellent venue to get your
items sold, for a reasonable consignment fee. As a motorcycle broker they
take the headaches out of privately selling your vehicle…connecting you with
serious buyers.
In addition to handling consignments, Cycle Recycle MC offers service work on all bikes. They can take
care of your routine maintenance needs,
make repairs, and install items you’ve
purchased in the store. The service
rate is very reasonable and competitive. You’ll get one of the best
deals in town on oil changes.
As an Amsoil Dealer you’ll
find the best price in the area
on synthetic motorcycle oil
and lubricant.
Cycle Recycle MC staffers are extremely knowledgeable in both street and dirt
motorcycles. So whether you
are buying or selling,
they can assist you with
your needs.
Consigning is a
great way to put a little
extra cash in your pocket and get rid of things
you no longer use or
need. At Cycle Recycle

place to display your
motorcycle and other
items for sale. Be aware,
Cycle Recycle MC does
not purchase anything
directly nor do they trade items. You get
the advantage of Cycle Recycle MC’s location & visibility to potential buyers and
staffers on your side who are experienced
in selling. There’s no more need to bring
strangers to your home. And no more of
your time is wasted on “no shows”.
Buying goods on consignment can
save you money. Cycle Recycle MC offers a wide selection of quality used motorcycle gear including parts, accessories,
apparel, leather goods, and collectibles.
We’ve seen tee shirts & leathers to mirrors, pipes, saddlebags, and windshields.
Each time you visit the store, there’s different stuff to check out.
For example, a new arrival available
for sale is a customized wheel with a 280
Metzler tire and billet sprocket that was
ordered from Bourget and never used.
It’s priced around half of what it sold for
new. Among the collectibles for sale is
an original tank from the movie ‘Harley
Davidson & the Marlboro Man’. Among
the bikes currently available are a Ridley
Trike, a Bultaco Alpina 450, and a rare
1985 Harley Low Rider with both electric and kick start.
Cycle Recycle MC is the place to
consign or shop for biker–related items.
Their friendly and knowledgeable staff
will make your buying or selling experience a positive one.

On March 12, Jimmy Brewer
and his lady Kathy Russell
were involved in an accident
as they were riding down to
an event with the Huns MC
along with fellow members of
the Mountain Motorcycle Association. Not all details
are available, but they were
riding 2-up on Hwy 77 in the
area of Mammoth, AZ. They
left the roadway and struck
the wall. Kathy was killed
in the wreck.
Jimmy’s injuries are not
life threatening. He broke
most every bone on his right
side, including a broken
shoulder... He has about 8
pins in his leg along with
skin grafts. Jimmy has now
returned home to the White

Services for Kathy were
held in Show Low on Sunday
March 20. We will have more
on that in our next edition.

ALR Legacy Run
On Saturday March 19, the American Legion Riders of Post 2 hosted their
3rd annual Legacy Run. Monies raised
by this event go to support the American
Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund.
Registration for this self-paced ride
was at Del Mar Leathers, located at 4815
E Main Street in Mesa, AZ. Always hospitable, on this morning owners Joe &
Denise had coffee, water, fruit, and pastries available. According to Events Coordinator Michele Root there were 82
sign-ins, plus some who came out to the
end party at Post 2 and made their donations.
The run was a scavenger hunt, with
riders getting a list of things to find, observe, or photograph along the way. This
was a clever approach, stepping away
from the more traditional dice or cards.
Plus you didn’t have to collect a bunch
of items, which can be problematic on a
motorcycle. Stop one was at Post 39 in
Gilbert, where breakfast was available.
From there, stops were at River Bottom
Saloon in Florence, American Legion
Posts 9 in Florence and 54 in Coolidge;
before ending at Post 2 at 2125 S Industrial Park Ave, in Tempe. Items to find

included answering the questions,
“When did ‘the Father of AZ’ die?”
and “Which anniversary was Post 9
in Florence celebrating that day?” Another task was to take a picture of or
describe the location of the Instrument
of Surrender. Yes, first you have to
know what it is  One of the scavenger item/questions referred to a game
board at Post 39 called Gilbertopoly;
which looks like a Monopoly board
but is specific to Gilbert. Only one
person, Nancy, answered that one.
Winners for the day were: Linda
Sherman of Post 26 won $50 for 2nd
place. Nancy Reiter of Post 2 was 1st,
answering everything correctly. She
received $100. Stephanie Martin won
the 50/50, collecting $341. Congratulations to you all. Of course, the biggest winner of the day was the Legacy
Scholarship Fund and the kids it will
help. The donation made to the Fund
was $1,245.
Michele wants to thank Joe & Denise, “for taking such great care of us
on this ride and everything else Post 2
does. They were wonderful. We presented them with a Certificate of Ap-

preciation that I am proud to say will be displayed at DelMar Leathers.” She continued,
“The River Bottom and American Legion
posts 39, 9, & 54 were awesome ‘hosts’.
Fools Life was terrific, yet again. They
stayed longer than booked and did an awesome job of entertaining us. They are booked
for our next Biker Ball in October. For those
that helped from Post 2, I’d like to thank
Sherrie Grey, Marla Kelly, Carolyn Roskob,
Jeanie Lanaghan, Helen Cantu, Mary Ellen
Kohut, Johnnie Barnett, Eagle Donaldson,
Trish McElyea, and Judy Galvez with our
Auxiliary. This was my last Run as Events
Coordinator for Post 2. We had a great time,
great people, delicious food - what a better
way to go. Hope to see everyone at the Biker Ball on October 22nd with Fools Life.”
The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund is a nationwide program, started
to provide scholarships for children of active duty service men and women killed
on or after Sept 11, 2001. The funds raised
go toward ensuring that a post-secondary
education will be a reality for their children
who want it. Learn more at

Party for Pops
14
JAMES
STURTEVANT
AZ Rider
Yes I know… we’re making an announcement here for a surprise party. But, it’s been
discussed that Pops isn’t so much of an online kinda guy. So we figured since this is
an online only edition, we can probably get away with it. So if you’re reading this, and
happen to cross paths with Pops along your travels, don’t let on. Sssshhhhhh…. It’s a
surprise!
Pops is a 20 year member of the Limey Riders MC and has been riding for 78 years.
Many in the MC community love him. Two years ago he was hit on his motorcycle and
the motorcycle needs to be repaired and modified a little. Come on out for a day of fun
and help to raise money to get Pops’ motorcycle back on the road and Pops back in the
wind.
Pops is great person and has been a part of the motorcycle community forever. It
would be great if everyone could come out and support this event. We as riders should
be proud to have Pops, at almost 90 years old, back sharing the road with us.
This event is being presented cooperatively by MMA’s Leather District, ABATE Shadow Mountain Chapter, and Limey Riders MC on Sunday, April 10 at the Amber Inn,
43rd Ave and Dunlap in Phoenix, from noon - 5pm. Music and entertainment are being provided by Farley McDavidson Road Show. Cost is $10/per person for the event.
There’ll be a 50/50, Raffles, and a Bikini Bike Wash. The Bike Wash is for a Donation.
The goal is to raise the money and get the bike done in time to give it to Pops at his
90th birthday party in June. Please help by inviting the biker friends on your lists. There
are a lot of fun things planned for this event. Please come out to support this.
If there is anything you would like to donate for a raffle or auction item or
if you need general event info, call Snakebite at 623-693-4932 or email her at
