MTW General Information
Message from the Producer
Welcome to MAN OF LA MANCHA. MTW is pleased to bring this timeless classic to our stage
and thanks those who have made it possible: Don & Judy McNulty Black, Stanley Cohen,
Friends of Don Garman and Friends of Ken Reiner. We also can’t forget our wonderful 59th
Season Sponsors: The Ackerman Family/Evalyn M. Bauer Foundation and Ken and Dottie
Reiner.
As Musical Theatre West gears up for our spectacular 60th Anniversary Season, we hope
you’re planning on joining us. Four Broadway Classics will come to the Carpenter Center stage
next season: 42nd Street, Oklahoma, A Chorus Line and Sunset Boulevard. You may renew
at the special table in the lobby or through the MTW office in person, by phone or by mail.
A very special thank you to all who contributed to our Year-End Campaign to raise $50,000 for our Education & Outreach Programs (see page 27). We almost reached our goal and hope you’ll consider helping us
raise the remaining $10,000 which will help sponsor our production with Wilson High School of FOOTLOOSE
Excited and enthusiastic members of the FOOTLOOSE cast are in the lobby and would welcome your support.
Keeping a non-profit arts group alive and thriving is a major challenge in today’s economic times. We’re so
deeply grateful for your investment in our future through ticket purchases, contributions and support of our
fundraisers. Together we will see MTW celebrate another 60 years.

About MAN OF LA MANCHA

The Show Written Because of a Mistake
The Song that Almost Didn’t Happen.
MAN OF LA MANCHA is arguably one of the most beloved classic titles in the musical theatre canon. But who
would have guessed that the show was born out of a
supposition by the press? Dale Wasserman, the author of
the libretto for MAN OF LA MANCHA was in Spain on
holiday when a local newspaper ran the story, “Dale
Wasserman in Spain to research a movie version of Don
Quixote, to star Yves Montand.” While no such picture
was in the works, Wasserman did become interested in
why adaptations of Cervantes novel were never quite
successful in their depictions of the title character. Part of
it had to do with the repetitive qualities of Quixote’s
adventures and while brooding on this question,
Wasserman ended up becoming much more interested in
Miguel de Cervantes and his life than the author’s famous
knight-errant. Many mistakenly believe that MAN OF LA
MANCHA is an adaptation of Don Quixote. At its core,
this show and the teleplay that it was adapted from “I,
Don Quixote,” are an exploration of Cervantes’ life using
scenes from “Don Quixote” to give us deeper insight into
the man behind the myth. In fact, in his novel, “The Impossible Musical,” Wasserman states that Cervantes is the
Man in the title of the musical, not Quixote.
To dream the impossible dream...The final rehearsal for
the teleplay, “I, Don Quixote”, ran eight minutes too long
and something had to be cut. The impossible dream
speech was the likely candidate and went. Until actor Lee
Cobb playing Don Quixote/Cervantes got the script
revisions and was furious. He marched up to Wasserman
and demanded that the speech be restored. The tired
and dazed author asked what speech the actor was
referring too and Cobb replied, “The (expletive) speech.”
“What (expletive) speech?” “The (expletive) impossible
dream speech.” Space during Act One was found for this
delectable indelible speech and the broadcast came off
without a hitch. Can you imagine Wasserman, Darion and
Leigh’s masterwork without this crucial speech, that they
turned into a crucial song? “The Impossible Dream (The
Quest),” the inspirational song that has been covered by
literally hundreds of artists from Richard Kiley and Brian
Stokes Mitchell to The Temptations and Frank Sinatra, that
has been translated into different languages across the
globe and more than withstood the test of time, much like
Cervantes’ Don Quixote himself.

LESLI MARGHERITA (Aldonza)
Lesli won the 2011 LA Ovation Award for starring as Kate/Lili in KISS ME, KATE at Reprise
Theatre Company, and the 2009 Laurence Olivier Award for her performance in ZORRO THE
MUSICAL, on London's West End. She reprised her role this fall to open the Shanghai, China
company of the show. She was last seen at MTW as Erma in ANYTHING GOES. Lesli trained
at UCLA, and was then chosen to star in the TV series "Fame LA,” directed by Kenny Ortega.
She has gone on to star and recur on numerous TV shows, films and pilots including "Suite Life
On Deck,” "Charmed,” "NYPD Blue,” "The District,” "The King of Queens,” "JAG,” "Fighting
Fitzgeralds,” "Nikki,” "On The Lot,” produced by Steven Spielberg, Joel Schumacher's “The
Number 23,” “Boogeyman 2,” and she can be heard on several animated films and TV shows,
most recently “Disney's Cinderella 3” and “Sponge Bob.” Recent theatre credits include Julie in SHOWBOAT

JUSTIN ROBERTSON (Manservant/Sancho Panza)
Justin is so happy to be back. He has appeared with The Pasadena Playhouse, Reprise, Musical Theatre Guild, Performance Riverside, Cabrillo Music Theatre, Fullerton CLO, Casa
Mañana, Theatre Under the Stars, Milwaukee Rep, Moonlight Amphitheatre, and Music Theatre
of Wichita. But his first professional appearances were for Musical Theatre West. Additionally, those involved in MTW’s PHANTOM (1993) received his sketch of fellow cast members as
a closing gift, starting a tradition that begat an illustration career (squigsink.com). Justin, aka
Squigs, was hailed by the New York Times as an heir to the legacy of caricature legend Al
Hirschfeld, and his Broadway Ink sketches are featured weekly on leading theatrical website,
Broadway.com. Also, look for Squigs' art in MTW's upcoming FORBIDDEN BROADWAY. An
Oregon native and longtime LA resident, he currently calls NYC his home. This one is for loved ones who, as impossible
as it may seem, continue to dream.
RICHARD GOULD (The Governor/Innkeeper)
A founding member of San Francisco’s Magic Theater, his work in the Bay Area included pioneering work with the Berkeley Stage Company and leading roles with the California Shakespeare Festival. Regional work includes Carl Magnus in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC at Long Beach
CLO, the Auctioneer and Firmin in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, Sweeney in SWEENEY
TODD at P.C.P.A., Richard in RICHARD III at Theatreworks in Colorado and Father Zahoria in
ZORBA at the Berkeshire Festival. Film and TV roles include work in “Nash Bridges,” “The West
Wing” and numerous voiceovers. He most recently appeared as Pickering in MY FAIR LADY,
Judge Turpin in MTW’s SWEENEY TODD, Hopkins in 1776 and Scrooge in A CHRISTMAS
CAROL.

MAN OF LA MANCHA marks Melanie’s 26th production
as co-prop(tart) mistress with MTW. Some of her favorite
shows (and cast and crew) include THE FULL MONTY,

to thank her husband Bill for enduring all of her long hours
away from home; Gretchen, her “partner in crime,” and
Mary, for allowing her this wonderful outlet to create!
Stan is excited to return to MTW where he previously has
stage managed HAIRSPRAY, CATS, SWEENEY
TODD and THE PAJAMA GAME. Stan is the production
stage manager for Moonlight Stage Productions in

seen a wide array of musical comedy, but she counts
CHILDREN OF EDEN, SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN, RAGTIME and
THE FULL MONTY among her favorites. Mary is currently
accepting bribes to keep from making public some of the

DALE WASSERMAN (Book)
Dale Wasserman served the theatre for over 50 years. In
earlier days he roamed America as a hobo, riding freight
trains and thereby avoiding any formal education whatsoever. At nineteen he gravitated into the theatre where he
cut his teeth on every conceivable job - stage manager,
lighting designer, director and producer among them. At
age 33 he walked off the Broadway musical he was
directing, abruptly deciding to become a writer. Since
then, he has produced a continuous body of work for the
theatre, film and television. MAN OF LA MANCHA was a
multiple Tony-winner and among the longest-running
Broadway musicals of all time. ONE FLEW OVER THE
CUCKOO'S NEST, also a Tony-winner, played to packed
houses for 4 years in New York and 5 years in San Francisco leading, of course, to the famous film. Mr.
Wasserman’s many other credits include screenplays
for THE VIKINGS, CLEOPATRA and A WALK WITH LOVE
AND DEATH, as well as countless TV dramas.
MITCH LEIGH (Music)
Pianist, Arthur Rubenstein has said of Mitch Leigh, "He's the
most brilliant composer writing for music today." Leigh
earned his bachelor's degree in music from Yale in 1951
and his master's in music in 1952, studying with Paul Hindemith. Since then he has worked as a composer, a producer, a director, and a businessmen. He is the only living
composer whose work was included in the Metropolitan
Opera's Centennial Celebration. Among Leigh's awards
are the Drama Critic's Circle Award, the Contemporary
Classics Award from the Songwriter's Hall of Fame for
"The Impossible Dream," and the first Yale Arts Award for
Outstanding Achievement in Musical Composition. In 1957
Leigh formed Music Makers, Inc., a radio and television
commercial production house, where as creative director,
he won every major award within the advertising industry.
In September 2001, Yale University named their new
School of Music building after him and his wife, Abby.

LEGACY SOCIETY
If Musical Theatre West has been an important part of your life, you can help create this same experience for future generations by including us in your estate plans. Leaving a bequest will ensure that musical theater remains a vital part of the Southern California arts community.
The Musical Theatre West Legacy Society honors individuals who, by including MTW in their longrange financial and estate plans, choose to create a personal legacy and help to ensure MTWÊs financial
strength for future generations. Gifts include bequests via a will or living trust, life insurance and retirement plan assets. Future plans can include gift annuities and charitable trusts as well. These gifts may
entitle you to an estate tax deduction equal to the amount of the gift, thus reducing your taxable estate.
In most instances federal estate tax regulations place no limit on the amount of your estate tax deduction for qualifying gifts, thus encouraging bequests made to a charitable cause such as MTW.
Whatever the size of your estate, a bequest allows you to determine how your assets will be disbursed
after your lifetime. A charitable gift to Musical Theatre West through a bequest may also reduce probate
costs and increase the assets you leave to your loved ones. If you have remembered Musical Theatre West

staged readings of great musicals
The first production of the Reiner Readings Series, THE MOST HAPPY FELLA, was a great success, and kicked off this season’s Series as a great way to be introduced to lesser-known works
of the musical theater canon. We invite you to join us for the next two shows in
he series’ second season:

Bock’s Pulitzer Prize Winning
Fiorello!
Directed by Patrick Pearson
From the composer and lyricist of “Fiddler on the
Roof” comes the musicalization of the life of
Fiorello LaGuardia, one of the greatest mayors in
American history. Before becoming a three-term
mayor of New York, LaGuardia had to beat out the
corruption of Tammany Hall and win the hearts of
the immigrant voters in the Big Apple.

In September 2001, Yale University named their new
School of Music building after him and his wife, Abby.

a closing gift, starting a tradition that begat an illustration career (squigsink.com).
An

About MAN OF LA MANCHA
28
