MAN OF LA MANCHA is arguably one of the most beloved classic titles in the musical theatre canon. But who would have guessed that the show was born out of a supposition by the press? Dale Wasserman, the author of the libretto for MAN OF LA MANCHA was in Spain on holiday when a local newspaper ran the story, “Dale Wasserman in Spain to research a movie version of Don Quixote, to star Yves Montand.” While no such picture was in the works, Wasserman did become interested in why adaptations of Cervantes novel were never quite successful in their depictions of the title character. Part of it had to do with the repetitive qualities of Quixote’s adventures and while brooding on this question, Wasserman ended up becoming much more interested in Miguel de Cervantes and his life than the author’s famous knight-errant. Many mistakenly believe that MAN OF LA MANCHA is an adaptation of Don Quixote. At its core, this show and the teleplay that it was adapted from “I, Don Quixote,” are an exploration of Cervantes’ life using scenes from “Don Quixote” to give us deeper insight into the man behind the myth. In fact, in his novel, “The Impossible Musical,” Wasserman states that Cervantes is the Man in the title of the musical, not Quixote. To dream the impossible dream...The final rehearsal for the teleplay, “I, Don Quixote”, ran eight minutes too long and something had to be cut. The impossible dream speech was the likely candidate and went. Until actor Lee Cobb playing Don Quixote/Cervantes got the script revisions and was furious. He marched up to Wasserman and demanded that the speech be restored. The tired and dazed author asked what speech the actor was referring too and Cobb replied, “The (expletive) speech.” “What (expletive) speech?” “The (expletive) impossible dream speech.” Space during Act One was found for this delectable indelible speech and the broadcast came off without a hitch. Can you imagine Wasserman, Darion and Leigh’s masterwork without this crucial speech, that they turned into a crucial song? “The Impossible Dream (The Quest),” the inspirational song that has been covered by literally hundreds of artists from Richard Kiley and Brian Stokes Mitchell to The Temptations and Frank Sinatra, that has been translated into different languages across the globe and more than withstood the test of time, much like Cervantes’ Don Quixote himself. 5 Cast Profiles DAVIS GAINES (Miguel de Cervantes/Don Quixote) Davis performed the title role in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in over 2,000 performances on Broadway, in Los Angeles (where he remains LA’s longest-running Phantom) and San Francisco (where he received the Bay Area’s Critic’s Award for Best Actor). She reprised her role this fall to open the Shanghai, China company of the show. She was last seen at MTW as Erma in ANYTHING GOES. Lesli trained at UCLA, and was then chosen to star in the TV series "Fame LA,” directed by Kenny Ortega. She has gone on to star and recur on numerous TV shows, films and pilots including "Suite Life On Deck,” "Charmed,” "NYPD Blue,” "The District,” "The King of Queens,” "JAG,” "Fighting Fitzgeralds,” "Nikki,” "On The Lot,” produced by Steven Spielberg, Joel Schumacher's “The Number 23,” “Boogeyman 2,” and she can be heard on several animated films and TV shows, most recently “Disney's Cinderella 3” and “Sponge Bob.” Recent theatre credits include Julie in SHOWBOAT (Goodspeed), Audrey in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (La Mirada), Lady of the Lake in SPAMALOT (Music Circus), Ilona in SHE LOVES ME (CLOSBC), SEE WHAT I WANNA SEE (The Blank), and Gloria in Jason Alexander's production of DAMN YANKEES (Reprise). He has appeared with The Pasadena Playhouse, Reprise, Musical Theatre Guild, Performance Riverside, Cabrillo Music Theatre, Fullerton CLO, Casa Mañana, Theatre Under the Stars, Milwaukee Rep, Moonlight Amphitheatre, and Music Theatre of Wichita. But his first professional appearances were for Musical Theatre West. Additionally, those involved in MTW’s PHANTOM (1993) received his sketch of fellow cast members as a closing gift, starting a tradition that begat an illustration career (squigsink.com). Justin, aka Squigs, was hailed by the New York Times as an heir to the legacy of caricature legend Al Hirschfeld, and his Broadway Ink sketches are featured weekly on leading theatrical website, Broadway.com. Also, look for Squigs' art in MTW's upcoming FORBIDDEN BROADWAY. An Oregon native and longtime LA resident, he currently calls NYC his home. This one is for loved ones who, as impossible as it may seem, continue to dream. 5 Musical Numbers Place: A prison in Seville, Spain, and in the imagination of Don Miguel de Cervantes Time: 1594 ACT ONE MAN OF LA MANCHA (I, DON QUIXOTE) Don Quixote, Sancho IT’S ALL THE SAME Aldonza, Muleteers DULCINEA Don Quixote, Muleteers I’M ONLY THINKING OF HIM Antonia, Housekeeper, Padre WE’RE ONLY THINKING OF HIM Carrasco, Antonia, Padre, Housekeeper THE MISSIVE Sancho I REALLY LIKE HIM Sancho WHAT DOES HE WANT OF ME?
