As we welcome Leslie Fluxgold The Power of We tanenbaumchat.org | 3 RHONA BIRENBAUM H In April 2012, TanenbaumCHAT’s Budget and Finance Committee recommended a tuition fee of $22,650 for the 2012/13 school year, including a capital levy of $800. The budget was based on an anticipated drop in enrolment of 89 students (6.5%) compared to 2011/12. However, transfers into Grades 10, 11 and 12 from other schools resulted in only 66 fewer students (4.8%) compared to the prior year. The school recorded a surplus of $1.4M in fiscal 2013, representing 5% of operating revenues. In 2012/13 TanenbaumCHAT was involved in an ambitious capital project. Construction of the Guttman Family Science Wing and refurbishment of former science classrooms at the Wallenberg Campus commenced in June 2012 and were 4 | TANENBAUMCHAT ANNUAL REPORT 2012-13 HIGHLIGHTS Year Ending June 2013 completed by the start of school in September 2013. Adjoining the gymnasium and connecting to the existing building via a glass promenade, the new facilities include five science labs that open onto green space, a science prep room, meeting and storage areas, new lockers, new washrooms, a green house, interior courtyard and outdoor gardens. At year-end the school had pledges of just over $7M towards this project. TanenbaumCHAT obtained two interest-free loans each in the amount of $1M to partially finance this project over the 5-year period that pledge instalments will be paid. The remaining financing has been secured through a bank loan. A concerted effort is underway to raise the final $1M and close this capital campaign. Last year we underwent major changes here at TanenbaumCHAT Wallenberg Campus 6 | TANENBAUMCHAT ANNUAL REPORT 2012-13 ...and were proud to see the construction of The Guttman Family Science Wing as well as renovations to many areas of our building. These additions and renovations add to an environment where high academic achievement is noted (79% of our students were honoured at last year’s Celebration of Academic Excellence) and over 70% of the student body participated in varsity and intramural sports. As well, our students participated in a multitude of extra-curricular activities such as School Play, Dance/ Fashion and Talent Shows, numerous clubs and committees including Peer Counselors, DECA, and the Year Book Committee. Our greatest collective strength is our commitment to Tikun Olum through fun-filled fundraising events like “Think Pink” and “United Way”. Students enjoy going on Shabbatons and show their ruach in all school-wide events. During their four years at TCW, our students foster new friendships, build leadership skills, develop trusting relationships, learn to work independently and be part of a team and grow into outstanding problem solvers. At TanenbaumCHAT we see examples everyday of their ability to accept new challenges, set goals a little higher and use their efforts for a variety of pursuits. A MESSAGE FROM Dr. Jonathan Levy T C K C A M P U S P R I N C I PA L Ph.D. Besides the 11 academic courses carried by most students, (368 of our 2012-13 was a year of unsurpassed student involvement at TanenbaumCHAT Kimel Family Education Centre students were honored at our Academic Award evening as high academic achievers), we fielded 20 sports teams, almost 50 clubs and committees, concerts, theatre, trips, Shabbatonim, exhibits, and performances. This not only results in busy, busy students, but in young men and women who learn to set priorities, accept new challenges, work with new friends as well as independently, establish goals, meet deadlines and push themselves a little harder; all ‘real world’ skills that will continue to serve them well long after they graduate. tanenbaumchat.org | 7 ‘‘ ‘‘ GRADUATION IS NOT THE END, IT’S JUST THE BEGINNING It is not what our teachers taught us or how they taught it that inspires us, but it is why they teach that is inspiring. This school acted as a melting pot of sorts for students of various backgrounds, be they educational, cultural, or religious; each individual became a member of the collective that embraced diversity within a unified Jewish community. YERES | M.A., Ph.D. TanenbaumCHAT is unique among North American Jewish community high schools, not only in scope of our Jewish studies curricula and in the size of its student body, but also for the breadth of the Jewish community represented in our student and parent body. We are a true microcosm of the diverse groupings within the GTA Jewish community. All are able to coexist and thrive in our school because we base our school culture on a high degree of respect and tolerance. TanenbaumCHAT is very proud of its top rated Jewish Studies curricular and co-curricular programs, which form the lynchpin of our school's philosophy and educational goals. All of our students take four Jewish Studies subjects every year including Ivrit, Tanach, Rabbinics, Jewish History, Talmud, and Ethics, in parallel programs in order to address the needs and skill levels of our students. Our syllabi have been developed in order to best meet the needs of our students and the challenges of the post high school world. Our staff is a mix of shlichim (Israeli teachers certified by the Jewish Agency), Israelis, Torontonians and North Americans. Our staff are warm, caring and are committed to helping our teens reach their potential. They encourage their students to ask challenging and fundamental questions and help them probe their own personal Jewish identity. A fundamental part of our Jewish program is our co curricular activities throughout the year. Jewish life at TanenbaumCHAT includes Shabbatonim, holiday celebrations, Israeli identity, commemorations for Yom Shoah for the Holocaust, and Yom Hazikaron for Israeli soldiers, as well as ongoing social action programs and periodic special speakers. We strive to help develop and nurture strong identities and relationships with Israel and Jewish communities around the world through our various programs and events. Jewish education at TanenbaumCHAT is “education for life,” and we help develop vibrant Jewish identities and practices in our students own lives.
