Adds Innovative Product to Detect
Early Heart Failure Up To
Two Weeks Before Weight Gain
NURSE ON CALL has purchased
and added to their Advanced Cardiac
Program an approved FDA device
called ZOE®.
The ZOE® fluid status monitor, is a
noninvasive medical device that measures
fluid status via bioimpedance. ZOE®
measurement is a quick and easy method
for determining whether individuals
are experiencing fluid congestion.
Research indicates that Zo is an early
predictor of congestion in heart failure,
showing decreases as early as two
weeks prior to symptoms.
Two hydrogel electrodes are placed
at the top and bottom of the sternum.
ZOE® measures the time it takes a low
frequency current to travel between
the two sensors, indicating fluid level.
Fluid decreases resistance or impedance and dry environments increase
electrical resistance or impedance.
Consequently, the more fluid in the
body, the less resistance or lower the
Zo measurement, and the dryer the
body the higher Zo number that is displayed on the ZOE®.
The ZOE® device will be used by
NURSE ON CALL as a part of their
comprehensive disease management
solution for patients living with heart
failure and is monitored by a skilled
nurse at each visit.
“This technology allows the physician
to promptly adjust medication, diet,
and activity levels, and virtually eliminate the need for frequent emergency
room visits and re-hospitalizations”,
said Teri Robotti, District Sales
Manager of NURSE ON CALL.
“using this innovative device in conjunction with the highly skilled nurses
on our Advanced Cardiac Team will
be revolutionary in the management
of our patients living at home with
heart failure.”
This is just one example of how
important your health concerns are to
NURSE ON CALL who have been
providing home healthcare services
since 1989 and are Medicare Certified.
They continue to fulfill their strong
reputation for furnishing high quality
skilled nursing, rehabilitation and
related services that patients, their
families and physicians expect and
deserve.
Skilled home health services and
the ZOE® are provided at no cost to
the patient.

COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS,
COMPREHENSIVE CARE
Thoracic Oncology Program
Thanks to Sebastian River Medical
Center’s Thoracic Oncology Program,
patients in Indian River and southern
Brevard counties can receive comprehensive cancer care close to home.
Their program, lead by experienced
board certified physicians, takes a
multi-disciplinary approach in order to
formulate the best treatment plan of
care, improved outcomes and quality
of life for patients. The process begins
with regular oncological conferences
designed to evaluate every aspect of a
patient’s history. The professional
team of experts assists patients with:
• Lung nodules/ masses
• Lung cancer
• Esophageal tumors
• Mediastinal masses (tumors in
central part of the chest)
• Pleural effusions (fluid build
in chest cavity)
• Mesothelioma (tumor located
within lining of the lung)
• Chest wall masses
State-of-the-art treatments, including
minimally invasive thoracic surgery
and laser/ bronchial stenting, are
available at Sebastian River Medical
Center. Area patients now have convenient access to services usually
found in larger university hospitals
and cancer centers.
New patient rooms allow patients
recovering from surgery to enjoy modern updates and comforts while receiving high-quality care. Each deluxe
private room and suite is equipped with
a long list of amenities including a flat
screen television; private bathroom with
shower; and comfortable overnight
amenities for a family member or friend.
At Sebastian River Medical Center,
they are committed to providing comprehensive healthcare services to the
community. To learn more about our
patient-centered Thoracic Oncology
Program, please call (772) 388-4388.
Mary Winfield admits it was a shock when she learned she
had lung cancer. The Barefoot Bay resident hadn’t smoked
in over 35 years and thought it was just an infection when
she began feeling excruciating pain. Now, almost exactly a
year after being treated by the Thoracic Oncology Team at
Sebastian River Medical Center, Ms. Winfield says she feels
great, and everyone says she looks good as she approaches
her 80th birthday.

SEBASTIAN RIVER MEDICAL
CENTER UNVEILS “ER EXTRA”
Extra Fast, Extra Easy, Extra Great
Patient Care and Customer Service!
“ER Extra” is a revolutionary emergency room experience aimed at making sure
patients get the care they need in a prompt and courteous manner. The implementation
of “ER Extra” at Sebastian River Medical Center will streamline the process while simultaneously keeping patients and their families informed about what to expect. “A smooth
visit from start to finish is our goal at Sebastian River Medical Center, and “ER Extra” is
giving our staff, nurses and physicians the necessary tools to make this a reality for each
and every patient we meet,” said Emily Holliman, Sebastian River Medical Center CEO.
Sebastian River Medical Center is very focused on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of their emergency room operations and understands that no one wants to wait
in an emergency situation. For this reason, the hospital has implemented a new program
focused on making sure patients see an emergency room physician faster and easier. They
have implemented the Pro Med tracking tool in an effort to track patient times.
Additionally, all emergency department personnel are committed to monitoring activity
and updating those in the reception area as to when they can expect to be seen. “We’ve
always prided ourselves on excellent patient care and customer service, but as new techniques are designed and implemented we predict we will be able to exceed our visitors’
expectations through “ER Extra,” Holliman continued. ER Extra has helped Sebastian
River Medical Center reduce its average length of stay well below the national average
of 56 minutes. “We will continue to look for opportunities to further enhance the ease
of an emergency room visit and will implement those as we find them,” Holliman said.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
When you arrive, ER patients receive a copy of the “ER Extra Emergency Room
Experience Guide. ”This guide explains the emergency room process, one step at a
time. “Knowing what to expect next has helped to calm our patients and reduce
their stress levels,” said Holliman. The guide is easy to use, which is important during an emergency situation. The guide includes a description of what will happen
during the initial triage and assessment phase of the ER visit, all the way through the
discharge process. “Naturally no one wants to think about needing emergency services. However, we want the residents of Indian River and Brevard Counties to know
that if they do, ER Extra at Sebastian River Medical Center will give them the extra
fast, extra easy, and extra great care they deserve,” Holliman

My name is Devon
Turner and I need
your help. I was
diagnosed with a
genetic disease
known as Polycystic Kidney
Disease at the age of
6 months old.
Polycystic kidney Disease (PKD) is a debilitating illness that reduces the function of
the kidneys due to the growth of a large
number of cysts. Eventually the kidneys
cannot perform their function, filtering
out toxins out of the blood. PKD is the
most common, life-threatening genetic
diseases, affecting more than 12.5 million
people each year.
When kidney failure occurs, the only
current options are dialysis multiple times
a week or an organ transplant, which only
a few lucky receive. My condition has
worsened over the past year and physicians have determined that I need a kidney
transplant to survive. In August 2008 I
was evaluated and deemed an excellent
candidate for transplantation at Florida
Hospital Transplant Center in Orlando
Florida. As you may know, transplantation is
very expensive. Even with health insurance,
there are significant non-reimbursable
costs. A fundraising campaign has been
established with the National Transplant
Assistance Fund (NTAF)
to help defray uncovered expenses such as
donor testing, deductibles, copayments
and prescriptions. NTAF is a nonprofit
organization that has been assisting the
transplant community for over twenty
years. All contributions are administered
by NTAF exclusively for uninsured transplant-related expenses.
It’s never easy to ask for help and now
is certainly no exception. I deeply appreciate your support. At times like this, the
assistance of family, friends and the community is crucial to help ensure a positive
outcome. Your prayers and support are
greatly appreciated.
On behalf of my family and myself,
thank you for your kindness and generosity.
Sincerely,
Devon Turner

Hip Resurfacing: An Alternative to Hip
Replacement
Richard Steinfeld, MD, FAAOS
Richard Steinfeld, MD is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic
Surgeons and is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
His orthopaedic practice includes sports injuries, hip, knee, and shoulder reconstruction, general orthopaedics including foot, ankle, hand surgery, and fracture
care. Dr. Steinfeld also specializes in advanced and leading technologies such as
Hip Resurfacing. Resurfacing of the hip joint is a bone preserving approach that
offers younger, active patients the ability to live pain-free and engage in most
activities. The worn surfaces of the hip are resurfaced with a smooth metal cap
and socket without violating the bone normally removed with a hip replacement.
From an activity standpoint, hip resurfacing allows most patients to return to more
active lifestyles including impact activities such as tennis, running, skiing, etc.
Marcus J. Malone, MD, David W. Griffin, MD and Richard Steinfeld, MD.
Orthopaedic Update: Treatment with Total
Knee Replacement
David W. Griffin, MD, FAAOS. AAHKS, FACS
Dr. Griffin is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and
Board Certified by the American Board ofOrthopaedic Surgery.
Continuing to improve pain relief for post op care following total knee replacement is
an ongoing goal of orthopaedic surgeons. A combination of techniques utilizing spinal
anesthetic and femoral nerve block is very safe. The spinal anesthetic allows the patient
to breathe on their own and avoids nausea and vomiting post op. With the addition of
the femoral nerve block this gives excellent relief of pain. Patients now use compression
cold/heat therapy which can be very beneficial for quicker recovery with less pain.
Patient Specific Knees and Gender Specific Knees are new advancements in
joint replacement technology. Patient Specific Knees are generated from MRI and
x-rays to produce exact knee models. These models are used to create patient specific
cutting blocks that the surgeon uses in the operating room. If proper alignment is
achieved, a prosthesis may last 25 years. Gender Specific Knees are total knee
replacement components designed for the male and female anatomy. This allows
better fit and alignment of components.
EPIDURAL STEROID INJECTIONS: A Non-
Surgical Approach To Reduce Back Pain
Marcus J. Malone, MD
Dr. Malone specializes in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is noted
for his work in Chronic Pain Management. As a Physiatrist, Dr. Malone coordinates the long-term rehabilitation process for patients with disabilities and neurological impairments. This specialty is particularly helpful for patients with musculoskeletal injuries and joint replacement post operative care. With his training
focused on managing pain, Dr. Malone performs Epidural Steroid Injections
(ESIs). This process is a common non surgical treatment method used to help
relieve pain in the neck, low back, arm and leg so that patients may resume their
normal activities. Epidural Steroid Injections consists of a long lasting corticosteroid and an anesthetic. ESIs have proven to be helpful and are commonly used
in combination with a Physical Therapy program.

Royal Palm Expands
To Meet Community Needs
With the tremendous growth in our communities, Royal Palm Healthcare and
Rehabilitation Center have made plans to
expand their facility to meet the needs that
will come with that growth. Purchasing all the
property on U.S. 1 and 10th Avenue in Vero
Beach (adjacent to their current center), Royal
Palm will be constructing a brand new state of
the art rehabilitation center. Plans to break
ground are scheduled for the winter of 2010.

CUTTING EDGE
TECHNOLOGY...
“IT’S NEVER 2 LATE”
Residents of Royal Palm Skilled Care
Center are now benefiting from today’s technology without the intimidation of the fear of
the “computer age”. In the process of expanding their rehabilitation department Royal Palm
chose to provide cutting-edge opportunities for
lifelong learning and innovative programs for
rehabilitative therapy. “It’s Never 2 Late” is
used by speech therapists, occupational therapists and physical therapists. All have benefited from incorporating “It’s Never 2 Late” programs into reimbursable therapeutic exercise
16
and finding creative applications for traditional therapy interventions.
The professional Rehabilitative staff customizes “It’s Never 2 Late” to each resident and
the system is mobile so if a resident does not
wish to leave their room, “It’s Never 2 Late”
can be brought to them.
The system is so universal, residents can
send and receive e-mail and video mail, they
can play games, work puzzles, virtually travel to
numerous countries, for history enthusiasts it
contains history from the 15th century to
today. It is basically a WINDOW TO THE
WORLD for those who are not able to do the
things today that at one time they enjoyed.
It is clear that rehabilitation is quite successful at Royal Palm just due to the fact that they
send 30+ residents home every month, fully
prepared to take on their normal activities.
Royal Palm has always been a strong proponent of “Pet Therapy” and they now have a
new puppy “MAX”, a cute little pug. You must
stop by and say hi to Max, Oliver and Calvin.

SEBASTIAN RIVER MEDICAL CENTER
Sebastian Medical Center’s Expansion Update.
Sebastian River Medical Center’s hospital expansion is well underway, with
two of three phases already completed.
The expansion will allow SRMC to better serve the healthcare needs of Indian
River and Brevard County residents and
visitors. Phase One focused on a new
suite of private patient rooms.
Completed in March 2009, these rooms
offer patients a long list of amenities
including private restroom access, flat
screen televisions, soothing interior
design and comfortable sleeping quarters
for a friend or family member. “I was
thrilled with the room and overall experience,” said Julie Hull, one of the first
patients to enjoy recovery in one of the
new private rooms. “Having a comfortable place for me and a family member to
stay while I was recovering from surgery
was such a godsend – we completely forgot we were in a hospital! After months
of construction outside the hospital,
SRMC is pleased to announce that
Phase Two of their project is now complete. They have added 350 parking
spaces in order to offer patients, visitors
and staff improved accessibility to the
expanded facility. Phase Three of
SRMC’s expansion project focuses on the
construction of a three-story, 55,000square-foot building designed to better
meet the needs of their patients. The first
floor will house a 16-bed intensive care
unit, while the second and third floors
will feature a total of 42 private patient
suites. The new building will connect to
the existing facility, so patients, visitors
and medical staff will be able to easily
move between departments. To keep the
community informed of the expansion
project, SRMC will host quarterly previews. The first, Spring into "Swing
Time" is scheduled for March 24, 2010.
Stop by their new parking lot for free
food and entertainment, and get the latest
information regarding the construction
progress. The 1936 movie "Swing Time"
with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers will
be featured with area swing dancers, free
flower pots and seeds - you can watch your
flowers grow as SRMC grows! Visit SRMC

PHYSICIAN
PROFILE
SEBASTIAN RIVER HOME HEALTH CARE
Meet Banjo Doc……
DR. DAVID DEPUTRON,
Sebastian
When your physician takes off the
white jacket or scrubs they are like you
and me, special interests, hobbies and
family. Believe it or not, physicians have
a life after office/hospital hours, many with
interesting histories and hobbies. I would
like you to meet Dr. David DePutron,
DO, FACOI in Sebastian, Florida.
Growing up in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, Dr. DePutron, at age 9,
joined his talented father and brother in
playing the banjo. As a family tradition
he also became a part of the historical
“Mummers”, participating in the 100
year old Mummers Parade, a New Years’
celebration drawing thousands of spectators as well as television cameras. The
Mummers hold a special place in Dr.
DePutron’s heart as he returns home
every year as the overseer of the judges
stand to assist them in their difficult
decision making.
His early banjo talent is what
enabled him to pursue a medical career
as it paid for his many years of education.
Traveling from Philadelphia to New
York to the Jersey Shore Dr. DePutron
and the Silver Dollars (a six piece band)
entertained many audiences and during
his final summer before beginning his
Externship he was asked by one of the
club owners to open a new club in
Wilkes-Barre, Pa. As Dr. DePutron put
it, it was the “GREATEST SUMMER”,
22
that was the
summer of ’69
(as in the song).
After graduating from the Philadelphia
College of Osteopathic Medicine he went
on to Suncoast Hospital in Largo, Florida
for his Externship then to Detroit,
Michigan for Internship and residency.
While in Detroit he became Director of
Medical Education and was a teacher/
administrator for 3 years. But his memories of Florida were drawing him back so
he packed up, moved to Vero Beach and
opened his private practice in Sebastian.
DePutron is Board Certified in Internal
Medicine.
In 2009 Dr. DePutron was experiencing some stomach problems. After a cat
scan of his chest then a pet scan, his
physician gave him the news. Lung
Cancer, six days later he had surgery. His
cancer was caught in the early stages and
after a few weeks he was back seeing his
patients. He has come away from the
experience with an “unbelievable appreciation of what patients endure from their
physicians”. “They are very courageous
in dealing with things that their doctors
need to put them through, repetitive
questions, treatments and procedures”.
“I hope I have the strength to go through
all of that”.
Barbara, Dr. DePutron’s beautiful wife,
shares his passion for health care and is
in the office daily working alongside him
and the staff. It must run in the family as
their family golden retriever, “Emmy” is
certified as a pet therapy dog. Barbara
and “Emmy” visit patients at Sebastian
River Medical Center a few days a week.
You can find Dr. DePutron at North
County Medical, 13836 US Highway 1,
Sebastian, Florida. Telephone 772.589.6888.

SEBASTIAN RIVER MEDICAL CENTER
Joint replacement surgery offers a new lease
on life!
Do your knees hurt when you walk?
Are simple, everyday activities getting
more and more difficult? If joint discomfort has made a significant impact on the
quality of your life, it may be time to consider joint replacement surgery. That’s
exactly what Polly Thomas, Vicki Vacca
and Katie Leonard did. All three decided
to do something about their chronic knee
pain, so they contacted Kirk Maes, MD ,
an Orthopaedic surgeon at Sebastian
River Medical Center.
“It was just too painful to walk down
the hall to the cafeteria, so I often skipped
lunch or ate crackers at my desk,” said
Polly, Clinical Coordinator at Sebastian
River Medical Center. “Finally, the pain
was just too much and I went to Dr. Maes
for knee replacement surgery. ”Vicki has a
similar story. As the pain in her knee
worsened, she spent more and more time
on the couch after a long day working as a
PCU nurse at SRMC. “When I came
home, all I wanted to do was get off my
feet,” Vicki said. “Playing with my grandchildren was out of the question. ”Katie
had both knees replaced at the same time
and feels great now that her rehab is complete. “I had a specialized closure of the
procedure, which is now standard for all
patients,” she said. “I responded well to all
requirements given to me. ”According
the Dr. Maes, Orthopedic patients benefit
from Sebastian River Medical Center’s
overall approach to joint replacement.
“The success of our orthopedic program,
including Joint Camp, is due to a team
effort by the dedicated staff at SRMC
,”said Dr. Maes. “I would specifically like
to recognize Kara Mauchenetti, Nurse
Practitioner, for her expertise in the program. ”Thanks to joint replacement surgery, Polly, Katie and Vicki have a new
lease on life. “I feel great,” Polly said.
“Before Dr. Maes performed the surgery, I
could barely walk. Now, I’m happy, mobile
and pain free. I work out on the treadmill
and lift weights - I even scuba dive! ”Vicki
couldn’t be happier with the results of her
surgery. “There’s no pain and have energy
plus,” Vicki said. “The surgery that Dr.
Maes performed truly changed my life. I
rank it up there with the birth of my
daughter and grandchildren.

True Colors Salon and Spa Makes
the Difference
How does a friendly environment
lead to better results? Simple, says
Courtney Turner, Owner of True
Colors, "When you know your service
provider won't be offended, you can
ask for what you want."
True Colors offers a wide array of
services from hair and nails to massage
and skin care, all in a luxurious and
spacious setting. Complimentary wine,
beverages and snacks await you in the
lounge, but its the attitude at True
Colors that sets it apart.
"I've seen some very nice places,
and I know there are a lot of very talented people out there, but the salon
and spas that I liked enough to return
to were the ones that made me feel
really comfortable. When I felt like I
was among friends, I could say 'oh, I
wear it this way,' or 'hey, that's too
light,' and that's when I would get
exactly what I wanted." Says Courtney.
"Think of me as a client advocate.
I've been a client much more than I've
been an owner, and I try to approach
my job from the client's perspective.
At True Colors, we reach out to you
and try to create a relationship where
you feel comfortable telling us anything, even what you don't like, so that
you get precisely what you want. When
I recruit our talent, I make sure they
are like us: people who love people.”
“So if you're like me, you've seen
plenty of salon and spas, and you've
had plenty of mediocre outcomes. I
invite you to my salon and spa, True

back to, I guarantee it.”

CARE
Dr. Stephen M. Tate
joins New Vision
Eye Center
There is excitement in the air
at New Vision Eye Center!
The legendary Dr. Paul V. Minotty,
one of the nations leading cataract surgeons and voted top Ophthalmologist
by Vero Life magazine, is pleased and
proud to announce the association of
Stephen M. Tate, MD to his New
Vision Eye Center in Vero Beach.
Dr. Tate left a successful practice in
South Carolina to move to Vero Beach
because of his close family ties to the
established Vero Beach Medical
Community and his respect for the
dynamic group of talented physicians at
New Vision. Dr. Stephen Tate is the
most recently trained ophthalmologist
in the area, underscoring New Vision's
ongoing commitment to bring the most
current technology available to their
patients in the most personal and caring
way possible. His interests and specialty
includes management of retinal and
glaucoma diseases, laser surgery and
premium cataract surgery with multifocal
intraocular lenses. Dr. Tate is also available
for general eye exams.
It is always interesting to find out
what motivates people to choose a career
path. In Dr. Tate’s case it was a family
friend and fellow ophthalmologist who
inspired him to get into ophthalmology.
Dr. Tate later had Lasik Surgery while
in medical school. He remembers, “it was
an awesome experience, I knew then I
wanted to specialize in eye care”.
Originally from Charleston, West
Virginia, Dr. Tate attended college at
Hampton-Sydney College in Virginia,
interned in Columbus, Ohio and did his
residency at the West Virginia University
Eye Institute before going into private
practice in South Carolina. He is Board
Certified by the American Board of
Ophthalmology, a member of the Indian
River County Medical Society, the
Florida Medical Association, and the
American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Tate has had some very memorable and challenging cases. One was a
14 year old who had a pen lodged in his
left eye. His eyesight was restored, thanks
to leading edge technology known as the
AcrySof ReStor multifocal intraocular
lens and the compassion of Dr. Tate.
Tate made a request to Alcon, the company that produces intraocular lenses,
to donate the lens while he waived his
surgical fee to make sure the young
man could see again. After surgery the
patient once again had 20/20 vision.
This is just the kind of passion that
makes a great physician. Kudos’ Dr. Tate!
Dr. Tate enjoys spending time with his
lovely wife, two adorable children and
their two dogs and cat. When time allows
playing golf and cycling come next.
While joining Dr. Paul V. Minotty,
Dr. David J. O’Brien, Dr. Roger J. Meyer
and Dr. James E. Copeland, Jr., Tate is
committed to excellence and taking care
of virtually all your eye care needs. You
can find them at 777 37th Street, Suite
D-103 (Kurtell Medical Center) in
Vero Beach. Telephone 772.257.8700

Would you like to take part in the future of
your health?
Would you like to restore the natural ability of your body function free of
pain and/or stress? Would you like to
take an active part in restoring your
health and assist your physicians in
their quest to heal you? Do you want to
protect and preserve the precious
health you have and reverse the onset
of illness? If your answer is yes, would
you be willing to invest 20 minutes
each day in an enjoyable activity?
According to the recent October
2009 Mayo Clinic Health Letter, an
investment of 20 minutes each day
practicing the slow rhythmic movements and breathing techniques of
qigong (say chee-kung) can produce
profound health benefits. Qigong is an
ancient form of exercise that originated
in China thousands of years ago.
Diagnosed with lung cancer, my oncologist suggested soft qigong to enhance
my spiritual, mental and physical
health. What I discovered? It is easy to
learn, requires no equipment, no special
place to practice, and is accessible to
everyone regardless of age or physical
abilities - and it has no side effects.
Though there are many schools and
styles of qigong, they all integrate three
fundamentals: posture and movement,
breath, mind and consciousness to create
a relaxed exercise that accelerates the
body’s natural healing.
Qigong is completely complimentary
to Western medicine. Mayo Clinic
emphasizes certain benefits such as
stress reduction can be seen in as little
as one day. After regular practice (10-12
weeks) practitioners often report lower
blood pressure, better sleeping patterns,
improved digestive and cardiovascular
health, as well as greater flexibility, balance, and decrease in depression and
the general effects of aging. Start 2010
investing in the future of your health
with one of the many classes and
workshops at our area’s beaches, parks,
community centers, gyms, doctors offices
or with private lessons.

Kim Harris-Smith and Bill Smith have a
passion to make sure you can HEAR
BETTER. The passion comes from their
individual loss experiences. Kim has suffered
from a genetic hearing loss and Bill from
Tinnitus. As Kim explains, “Since I have a
hearing loss, I feel as though I can offer patients
a clear grasp of what they can realistically
expect when being fitted with hearing aids.
Also, I can totally relate to the frustrations
clients are feeling and I know how important
it is for us to match the performance of hearing
instruments to a person’s specific hearing needs.”
Their professionally experienced team
are available 24 HOURS A DAY AND
SEVEN DAYS A WEEK, to provide immediate care for patients who experience any
problems with their hearing instruments. InHome services are also offered for patients
who are unable to drive to any of their 5
Audibel offices. Bill and Kim own Audibel
offices located in Sebastian, Vero Beach, Fort

are proud that they have the most technologically advanced instruments in the industry.

of combined experience there is no one else

Recent technological improvements have
revolutionized hearing devices.
Now,
through computer assistance, hearing devices
can be programmed with data that is stored
in a memory chip. “We are able to use our computer to calibrate information in the hearing
device to fit specific situations, for example,
we can simulate a patient in a home situation. We have sound from the television
going, dogs barking, dishwasher operating and
dishes rattling and we can regulate the sound
information in the hearing device’s memory
chip to allow the correct adjustments for
BETTER COMFORTABLE HEARING.”
Bill explains.
The new exciting technology includes the
size, they are so small in the some cases they
are almost undetectable.
The Audibel hearing instruments average
life span is seven to 10 years unlike the traditional industry average of three to five years.
Kim and Bill credit Audibel’s free after-care
program with providing the proper maintenance that prolongs the life of the device.

Dr. Hema Rao continued from page 32

Dr. Hema Rao Expands
Practice to Include Triveni,
An Aveda Spa
“Definitely not a typical doctor’s office.”
Triveni Spa, an Aveda Salon, is not an ordinary spa
that helps you look pretty on the surface. Instead, Triveni
Spa was conceived to help you actually look and feel
beautiful, naturally.
Triveni in Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language, means
“confluence of three rivers” and refers to a site where the
three rivers of ancient India meet to create a nexus with nearmystical healing and rejuvenation powers. Generations of
Indians have made the trip to Triveni to bathe in these sacred
waters for renewal of the mind, body and spirit.
Dr. Hema Rao, a local oncologist in Vero Beach,
has expanded her medical practice to include this spa
and wellness center. Dr. Rao has always focused on
treating each patient as a whole person, not just their
diagnosis or disease. She feels that knowledge and
information of all aspects of one’s self is very important at all stages of the cancer journey. A comprehensive complementary program in addition to the mainstream medical treatment can help patients through
the healing process and improve their quality of life.
I sat down with her daughter, Swathi Rao, who
was instrumental in bringing to life her mother’s
dream. In less than 10 days, Swathi was able to
expand and transform Dr. Rao’s medical office into
an aromatic, comforting setting for both patients and spa
guests. Definitely not your typical doctor’s office or spa at
all but the best of both worlds.
When Dr. Rao first started her practice, the typical
patient was aged 52. Then, she became concerned as she
started seeing a number of patients in their 20s, so she
began to investigate why. One possible reason is the
increased exposure to chemicals and other artificial elements. Given that the skin is the body’s largest organ,
anything that we put on our body is inevitably absorbed
internally, such as the petrochemicals in most bath and
32
beauty products. Dr. Rao did a considerable amount of research before focusing on
Aveda. Aveda is one of the largest purchasers of organic ingredients in the personal
care industry. 90% of their essential oils and 89% of their raw herbal ingredients are
certified organic.
Triveni Spa offers a variety of services including hair color, style and treatment services, facials, body treatments, including manicures and pedicures, depilatory services, massage & spa treatments, as well as Aveda’s full range of hair, skin and makeup products.
All services incorporate aromatherapy and reflexology so clients begin with a
consultation to find out what oils will best suit you. Those oils are used during your
salon and spa treatments and products can be customized so that you can incorporate
them in your daily life.
As a certified yoga teacher, Dr. Rao has always incorporated complementary healing modalities such as yoga and massage into her practice. She also hosts lectures and
workshops on a wide range of wellness topics. Adding a salon and spa that uses only
the most natural products is the next step in her vision of providing the best care for
the mind, body and spirit.
Kudos to Swathi for making her mother’s dream come true.

Beach, Florida. Telephone 772.569.7546 or e-mail info@TriveniSpa.com

MY
BRAIN
TUMOR
Don’t Let Your Handicap Stop Your Dreams!

time. Determined, I kept undergoing
hours of therapy and rehabilitation.
After this major change in my life
and everything I have been though,
knowing life is too short and you
never know when it is going to end,
made me more determined to go after
my dream. I have always wanted my
own business.
During my childhood my parents
had a catering business and I always
loved to cook and make people happy
with food. So, through my childhood
experiences of always being around
food, having survived everything I
have been though from the brain surgery, I took a second mortgage on my
house and opened Gattuso’s Italian
Specialty Market located at 900 SW
Martin Downs Boulevard in Palm
City, Florida. The store is a recreation
of the mom and pop market that I
grew up with and a lot of people know
about because it reminds them of their
local corner market. The store also
resembles an old European market
with sounds of Italian music in the
background and the smells of food
cooking. I get help from Eli Rich, who
is a retired food chemist. With his
experience as a food chemist and culinary education he knows how ingredients come together to make a particular flavor. Eli has a scientific approach
where I have a home grown approach.
The combination of the two of us
together really works. I pride myself
with giving each new customer a personal touch and showing them what I
have to offer and suggest cooking ideas
to them. I have some recipes posted
throughout the store and write a
monthly food column which is published

In May, 2004 I was diagnosed with
a brain tumor. I under went 8 hours of
brain surgery which left me completely deaf in my right ear. Right after the
surgery we got hit with two hurricanes,
Frances and Jeanne, while I was trying
to recover, and had no power for 14
days, more trauma. Then I developed
fluid on my brain and found I developed scar tissue in the form of a cyst
on my brain. I had to go back to the
hospital in October, 2004. After the
surgery I was unable to walk without
falling down for several years because
my balance was off. I found out the
cause several years later, it was because
the nerve tissues in my deaf ear were
partially alive, therefore, it did not
compensate for my partially deaf left
ear to give me back my balance. The
two years following the brain surgery I
went through invasive treatments to
try and deaden the nerves to give me
my balance back. Since I had been
extremely active all my life, this
became a daily challenge to get around
without falling over and very traumatic to me to not be able to do the things
I had enjoyed doing.
In April, 2006 a new set of doctors

Local Surgeon Among First in Country to Use New
Intraocular Lens for Cataract Patients With Presbyopia
A revolutionary advance in cataract
surgery has been introduced this month
by Val Zudans, M.D. of the Florida Eye
Institute in Vero Beach. Crystalens AO
is the latest generation of flexible
intraocular lenses by Bausch and Lomb
that provides patients with a full range of
quality vision (near, intermediate and
44
distance), and greatly reduces reliance on
glasses. Dr. Zudans is one of just four surgeons in the state of Florida and one of
just thirty-five surgeons in the United
States that was selected as an investigator in Bausch & Lomb Surgical’s Field
Observation Study for their new
Crystalens AO model. This lens will be
released to the general public in 2010.
The vast majority of patients who
undergo cataract surgery today receive
fixed single power lenses, which typically
require them to use reading glasses or
bifocals for near vision following surgery.
"With the new Bausch & Lomb
Crystalens AO IOL, patients have the
potential to see well near, far and everywhere in between," said Dr. Zudans.
"This new lens with an aspheric optic is
a breakthrough in cataract surgery that
we are proud to offer our patients."
Bausch & Lomb Crystalens AO is a
foldable IOL and represents breakthrough technology because of its new
aspheric optic design. According to Dr.
Zudans, “The Crystalens platform for a
dynamic flexible lens that moves within
the eye to change focus from far to near
has been around for about seven years.
It has gone through several generations
of enhancements. The newest generation which is to be released to the general public in 2010 has an aspheric optic
design that is intended to improve the
optic quality.” The end benefit for
patients is an increased range of quality
vision that results in a high level of spectacle freedom. Through his participation in the Crystalens AO Field
Observation Study, Dr. Zudans has
already implanted ten lenses with this
latest technology. He is now scheduling
consultations at the Florida Eye Institute
for patients interested in this lens once it
is released to the general public in 2010.
A cataract is a "clouding" of the eye's
natural lens, which results in blurred or
defocused vision. According to a recent
article published in the Archives of
Ophthalmology, more than 20 million
adults in the U.S. have developed
cataracts making it the number one
cause of poor vision in the United States.
While not all cataracts require surgery,
nearly 3 million cataract procedures are
annually performed in the U.S. Cataracts
cannot be prevented and are the leading
cause of treatable blindness worldwide.
According to the National Eye Institute,
the number of Americans with cataracts
is expected to rise to over 30 million people by the year 2020.
Dr. Zudans completed his ophthalmology residency at the Bascom Palmer Eye
Institute at the University of Miami. He
is Board Certified by the American
Board of Ophthalmology. He earned his
undergraduate and medical degrees from
the University of Florida. He lectures
on the subject of advanced cataract and
refractive surgery to physicians and the
general public, including TV and radio
appearances.
Dr. Zudans performs no-needle, nostitch, clear-cornea cataract surgery to
minimize discomfort and speed recovery.
He uses this same highly advanced procedure for Crystalens AO cataract surgery.
Dr. Zudans' additional expertise in
refractive surgery such as LASIK,
45

AST/LASEK and AK/LRI allow him to

Post-Op Patients
Wake Up to ‘Visions of
Sugarplums
Some extra smiling faces greeted
patients waking up from surgery in
Indian River Medical Center’s Post
Anesthesia Care Unit this holiday season, in addition to those of the staff
around them. As they opened their eyes,
on the ceiling were painted images of the
Grinch, Santa, Rudolph, Mickey Mouse,
Snoopy, an elf and Cindy Lou Who – all
created by Ann Sinoply, R.N., who has
worked in the recovery room since 1999.
Last Christmas, Sinoply created a
wreath decorated with bottles of nonnarcotic IV meds and a ‘green’ tree using
all recycled materials such as the cap lids
off IV bottle meds and caps off syringes
and a topper made of IV bag stoppers.
This year she decided to paint 10 plastic
light covers with cheerful characters so
patients had something nice to look up to.
“I thought we needed something nice for

the patients because we have no windows
in here,” she said, adding that the children
waking up from their anesthesia seem to be
especially charmed. “I really enjoyed doing
it and everybody enjoys seeing it.”
Sinoply, a Sebastian resident, has been
painting since high school. She joined
IRMC in 1997 in Critical Care before
moving to PACU 10 years ago.
When the Indian River Medical
Center Respiratory Department named
a new memorial scholarship in honor of
coworker Patricia ‘Trish’ McQueen in
the summer, Rebecca Abbott, BSRT,
staff respiratory therapist, thought it
would take years to raise the amount of
money necessary to ensure that the
scholarship would exist forever.
“I thought it would take about four
years to raise the $10,000 necessary,”
she said.
Even after Audrey Slee, BSN,
Critical Care, who placed first in her
age category, suggested the idea of a 5K
race/walk, Rebecca still remained dubious about the rate at which money
would come rolling in. “I thought initially we might raise $5,000,” she said.
Other employees who placed in the
5K were Kevin Flanagan, RRT, who
placed second in the male 50- to 59-age
group; and Carol Kramer, R.N., Critical
Care, who placed first in the female 40to 49-age group.
But during the three months of planning for the race, it was evident that
through Rebecca’s efforts and the incredible perseverance of the 27-member
department, even more than the $10,000
needed for the endowment at Indian
River State College would materialize.
“We were all shocked and I couldn’t
believe it as we got closer to the goal,
Dr. Geoff Wolf, anesthesiologist, with his five
children before the start of the race. From left,
Adam, 9; Sarah, 6; Emma, 3; Rachel, 11; and
Kyle, 8. In the male 12-and-under category,
Adam placed second and Kyle placed third;
Rachel placed first for girls.
but at the same time, I knew we could
do it with Rebecca’s efforts and that of
our whole department,” said Tim
Howald, RRT, lead clinical specialist.
As word of the race and goodwill for
the good and selfless person that Trish
was spread, more and more people came
forward to ask how they could help.
More than 50 employees and their families participated in the race/walk and
more than 40 physicians gave at least
$100 to have their name on the race Tshirt. In total, more than 150 men,
woman and children participated in the
race held at South Beach Park. Local
banks, groceries, real estate companies
and other businesses all served as sponsors. Runner’s Depot of Vero Beach
47
PULSE POINTS
organized the event.
Trish’s sisters, Donna D’Alessandro
of Palm Bay, and Nancy Heidt of
Sebastian, were on hand to present
medals. Tammy Dunphy, RRT, created
badge holders that she sold to buy the
medals for the race.
“Compassion, respect, teamwork.
Those three values sum up how our
hospital runs itself. I could not have
done this without all of these people
pitching in,” Rebecca said.
And by raising $12,000 rather than
the $10,000 needed for the lifetime
endowment, a $600 scholarship will be
given out in Trish’s name to a graduating IRSC respiratory student each year
– a $100 increase over what it would
have been.

Gingerbread ‘Pagoda’
Delights Children of All
Ages
Dale Heffner put the finishing touches on his
gingerbread pagoda.
When you or I combine licorice sticks,
candy canes, Hershey kisses, gum drops
and Red Hots, we get a sweet snack. When
Dale Heffner, Indian River Medical
Center Patient Food Service manager,
combines them – along with 50 hours of
labor – he gets a tiered tower with multiple
eaves that delights everyone who sees it.
Heffner began creating the gingerbread pagoda that is on display in the
hospital Cafeteria the weekend of
Halloween. He has made a gingerbread
creation at Christmastime every year
with the exception of one since he was
inspired when seeing a similar display in
1978 while in Hawaii.
This year’s creation – which also
resembles a Christmas tree – began with
Internet research of pagoda designs.
Heffner then measured for proportions
and drew his design out on graph paper.
Then the baking started. He baked sheets of
gingerbread, 3/4 –inch thick, and attached
them to plywood supports. He placed a light
inside the pagoda and began placing his
candy decorations in places that would be
hard to reach as the project went on.
His only enemy – humidity! And he
did have a bit of a scare this year when the
A/C at his home went out unexpectedly.
The end result is a fantasyland of lakes
with swans, bridges, snow, icicles, poinsettias, flowers and candy hearts. The icy
frosting is created with ‘royal icing’ that is
made from egg whites and powdered sugar.
Heffner’s creations are made each year
for the annual Festival of Trees where
they are auctioned off to benefit
Riverside Children’s Theatre. This year,
Marty and Ginger Gibson, Ruby Eagle
donors at IRMC, purchased the tree and
donated it back to the hospital for display.
“More than anything I do it for the
children. When you see the kids come up
and look at it, their eyes just light up,”
Heffner said.
