Choice & maintenance
of your scissors
Selection guide
Choose the right size. Try a pair before you buy. Choose on
the basis that the blades cut the fabric not finger pressure.
This is especially true of pinking shears. They should not be
too heavy for comfort but if in doubt choose the larger size.
If you find too much hand pressure is required then either
you are using the wrong shears or maintenance is needed.
The insides of the blades, particularly of forged steel shears,
are hollow ground, this gives a turn to the blade and a gap
behind the cutting edge. This is important. Only at the point
of cut are the blades actually in contact. Shears made in
this way cut easily along the entire length of the blade with
considerably less wear and tear and are a pleasure to use.
Synthetic fibres are more easily cut by a shear with one
serrated blade. This grips fabric which would otherwise tend
to slip out of the blades.
Don’t underestimate the versatility of serrated shears. They
will cut fabrics from fine chiffon to leather and denim.
Caring for your scissors
Scissors and shears consist of two pieces of steel grinding
against each other under pressure. Their life will be
considerably increased if they are kept lightly oiled each day.
Most shears (with the exception of pressed stainless steel
models) are made of untreated carbon steel. Rust will
occur in the typical cutting environment. To prevent this
clean, and oil the blades regularly. New scissors and shears
sometimes need to be “run in.” If they feel rough when
slowly closing it is usually due to extremely fine burrs. Just
rub the blades down CAREFULLY with cardboard or similar
and this should restore them to a smooth shearing action.
Maintenance is so important and neglect will result in a
cutting action that will disappoint.
Do not adjust the pivot bolt or screw before checking all of
the above points. Too tight an adjustment will often shorten
the time between sharpening and regrinding.
Normal sharpening is required only occasionally and should
be entrusted to a specialist.
Do not attempt to sharpen a serrated blade.
Poor results and sometimes permanent damage can occur
when a do-it-yourself effort is made.

Stud Presses
We can supply foot operated stud presses which are
suitable for applying all our studs, eyelets, etc.
These presses can be supplied on a stand or can be
bench mounted. They can also be fitted with pneumatics
for efficiency and consistency. It is especially important
to use the correct dies for each component. An incorrect,
worn or misaligned die can cause the component to
deform to the extent that the tension or pressure to open
or close the finished dome is either too loose or too tight.
We can also source through our suppliers fully automatic
machines. If you require further information on these
please ask.
It is also worth considering having your studs, etc,
applied by a professional and experienced applicator. We
can advise.
