TI 003E Technical Information SIGLA® walkable / SIGLA® Trep Author: Frank Greiner Status: 12/2010 Technical Information SIGLA® walkable / SIGLA® Trep General Information The trend towards more transparency in and on buildings is now also affecting horizontal building elements. Whether glass ceilings, stairs and glass landings that are safe to walk or drive on, all these things can now be made of glass. The generous use of glass influences the natural lighting conditions in a structure. Despite its partly complex structure, glass that can be walked on conveys a transparent lightness. Area of Application The products SIGLA® walkable and SIGLA® Trep are suitable both for indoor and outdoor use. This is where walkable glass is subjected to considerable stress. The mechanical abrasion through the influence of weather and through stones, outdoor shoes and the influence of objects that are prone to rust is especially great. Depending on the type of use (walkable or driveable), we need to observe relevant regulations, structural engineering calculations and tests. Structure Walkable or driveable SIGLA® glass consists of at least three glass panes, whereby the top plate functions as a protective plate while the glass below fulfils the load-bearing function. Glass with drillings or cut-out sections should always be made with one plate of safety glass to minimise the danger of the glass breaking. Surface Area With walkable glass, the accident prevention regulations can make it necessary to apply a slip-resistant surface to the glass. The following options exist here: Roughening through sand blasting Etching using an acid Screen printing with a slip-resistant enamel (R11) Laser structuring (R9). Common to all methods is that the roughened surface significantly reduces the danger of slipping and thus helps to prevent accidents. Screen printed product is not suitable for use in heavily frequented places or in outside areas that are subjected to the weather The slip resistance of most methods can also be applied to partial surfaces. This, however, also leads to an equivalent reduction in the slip resistance. TI 003E Status: 12/2010 Page 2 of 9 Technical Information SIGLA® walkable / SIGLA® Trep FLACHGLAS Wernberg GmbH offers glass with a slip-resistant screen printing or etched surface that has been tested according to DIN 51130 / BGR 181, up to R 111. When using this glass, care should be taken that the neighbouring surfaces always possess the same slip-resistance category to avoid a stumbling effect. With glass plates featuring screen printing, the protective glass consists of toughened safety glass (DELODUR®) or TVG. The slip-resistant screen printing consists of an enamel that corresponds with the abrasion categories II to III according to the German industrial standard DIN EN 154. Glass printed in this manner is therefore not suitable for use in highly frequented areas. Maintenance/Cleaning In contrast to rough surfaces, smooth glass surfaces have the advantage of allowing stains to be removed easier and, if cleaned properly, their surface hardly changes over years of use. The glass retains its original properties even after decades of use. Unfortunately, glass with roughened surfaces behaves differently than other surfaces. Spots can either only be removed with great difficulty or not at all. This is why glass with a slip-resistant surface must be cleaned more carefully than glass with a smooth surface. Rough glass surfaces should therefore be treated like carpets. Unless coffee or fruit stains are removed immediately, they can only be cleaned with great difficulty or not at all. Please Note Should a glass pane be damaged, then it must be blocked immediately or covered with a plate that can sustain a load. Planning and Building Laws In each individual case, completely walkable or partly walkable glass must always be approved by the highest authorities of the state. Exceptions to this rule are contained in the TRLV2 or the regional building regulations. As a rule, proof of the static of the lumped load and the floor load according to the German industrial standard DIN 1055 as well as proof of the remaining load-bearing capacity is required. The party performing the construction work is also responsible for applying for having a particular use approved (German ZiE approval); this must be done before ordering the glass. We must be informed well in advance of the resulting specific demands that are being placed on the glass. 1 2 This category applies to screen printing for a full-surface printing application. TI 003E Status: 12/2010 Page 4 of 9 Technical Information SIGLA® walkable / SIGLA® Trep SIGLA® Trep mounted on two sides Walkable glass that has been mounted on two sides usually requires safety bolts to enable it to pass a test for the remaining load-bearing capacity. Here it is important to maintain the two parameters of the gap between the bolts and the edge and between each other as well as the length of the free edge between the supports. The length of the glass in the direction of the support H is productionally determined and can equal up to 5100 mm. As a standard, the covering pane is not bored through. However, this can be provided (e.g. by countersink boring) to secure the glass against a “lifting” effect. The supports and the bolts can also be installed on the site.
