And so ends Peter Jackson’s saga.
After playing in J.R.R. Tolkien’s world
for almost fifteen years his last trilogy
is complete. Well, unless he gets his
hands on The Silmarillion...
The final film starts on quite the high,
charting the great dragon Smaug’s
devastation of Laketown. Bard
manages to escape the prison into
which he was thrown by the corrupt
mayor, and faces off against the
dragon. Up on the Lonely Mountain,
watching helplessly as the town burns,
is our hobbit hero, Bilbo, and most
of Thorin’s cadre of dwarves. Thorin
watches the destruction but his
mind is already roaming the mounds
of gold under the Lonely Mountain.
Somewhere amongst it all is the
Arkenstone, which he needs – or at
least believes he needs – in order to
lay true claim to the mountain and
to the throne. Meanwhile, Gandalf
is wasting away, held captive as
he is by a Nazgûl doing Sauron’s
bidding. Lest that all seem too easy
and straightforward to surmount,
several armies march upon the Lonely
Mountain, hoping to get at the riches
inside.
At a little over two hours, The Hobbit:
The Battle of the Five Armies is the
shortest film of the trilogy, and also
the most action-packed. The first
two films spent reasonable chunks
of their running time doing the table
setting, readying us for numerous epic
showdowns, which here come thick
and fast: there’s Bard and Smaug’s
face off, which makes for quite the
cold open, and is thrilling and intense
enough to have been worth the long
wait; there’s the rescue of Gandalf
from the Nazgûl; there’s the opening
salvos of the epic battle, as dwarves
and elves face off against orcs – and
from there the chaos merely spreads,
as more armies enter the fray, and the
battlefield grows ever wider.
In the midst of all this warfare are
lighter (although still warfare-related)
sequences like when Orlando Bloom’s
Legolas – who continues to be
almost a living embodiment of a Rube
Goldberg machine – needs to cross
a vast chasm so that he might kill
another orc (having run out of arrows
with which to do it at a distance). His
solution to this problem is over-thetop, slightly insane, and decidedly silly.
The scene sees Peter Jackson at his
most frivolously inventive; something
which he’s always done very well.
Balancing all this, and supplying
dramatic heft whilst the world burns,
crumbles and tumbles around them,
are Martin Freeman and Richard
Armitage, who play Bilbo and Thorin

respectively. Freeman has been the
beating heart of this trilogy, and
whenever he’s onscreen the film feels
more focused and centred, despite
its huge sprawl. In Armitage we have
one of the more interesting, conflicted
heroes of Tolkien’s world, his inner
battle with his less appetising instincts
making him a more compelling and
rounded creation.
In short, Jackson ends his series on a
high. It’s bombastic, epic and intense.
There’s really no reason not to catch it
on board today!

Night at the Museum: The Secret of
the Tomb is the third – and supposedly
final – instalment in the successful
Night at the Museum comedy
franchise. The film features the now
usual suspects: Larry (Ben Stiller),
Jedediah (Owen Wilson), Octavius
(Steve Coogan) and Teddy Roosevelt
(the late, great Robin Williams, in
what would be his last on-screen
appearance).
A precious artefact known as the
Tablet of Ahkmenrah holds the key
to all of the magic that courses
through the museum and brings its
many exhibits to life. However, on the
opening night of a new exhibition the
gang find themselves growing weaker,
and lose control, bringing the night to
a chaotic end. In a desperate attempt
to solve the mystery and save the
magic, they must span the globe and
head to England in order to track down
the Tablet of Ahkmenrah’s original
owner, Merenkahre (Ben Kingsley),
who is housed in the British Museum
in London.
With only a short period of time in
which to solve the mystery – the tablet
is slowly corroding and will soon cease
to cast its magic – the gang must act
quickly. But there are many obstacles
standing in their way. Will there be
enough time? Or is the magic of the
tablet about to finally run out... forever?
What truly separates this third instalment
from the previous two is the added
comedy value. This is evident with the
introduction of a few new faces that
are found at the British Museum, such
as the lovable, if slightly self-important,
Sir Lancelot (Dan Stevens), who brings
a madcap, chaotic spark to the story.
Exuding an abundance of charm and
wit, Dan Stevens alone makes the film
a worthwhile watch. As fans of the
franchise will know, Night at the Museum

is renowned for its solid cameo
appearances and this latest instalment
does not disappoint, with bit parts
for Hugh Jackman (X-Men), Alice
Eve (Star Trek Into Darkness), Ricky
Gervais (The invention of Lying), Rebel
Wilson (Bridesmaids), Dick Van Dyke
(Diagnosis Murder) and the iconic Ben
Kingsley (Shutter Island).
At the helm is Shawn Levy (Real Steel,
Date Night) who has directed the Night
at the Museum franchise from the
start, and has watched its popularity
grow across the globe. To date the
series has grossed a combined total of
$539 million dollars, and that number
is still rising. Handling the screenplay,
whilst working closely with the director,
is the capable duo of David Guion
(Dinner for Schmucks) and Michael
Handelman. When all the elements
noted above are combined together
the end results is a well-directed,
fun-fuelled, family romp, which ticks
all of the boxes and makes for a great
blockbuster event.

amusing escapades are relatable to
our own relationships and family. With
this in mind, ‘The Middle’ comes to
our screen with a multitude of quips
and chaos to keep the whole family
chuckling.
The Middle follows Frankie Heck
(Patricia Heaton) as she and her
oddball family struggle to cope with
their home life, work, schools, and
most importantly, each other. All of
this plays out in the humdrum town of
Orson, Indiana – or, “The Middle”.
From start to finish, the Heck family
shows the joy and complexity of
suburban living: raising children,
maintaining a happy marriage, learning
valuable lessons; all of this is done in

It has the family values of Malcolm
in the Middle and the confident folly
of Scrubs. This is presented in a wellbalanced approach, as at no point
does the story feel unbelievable. The
characters and the situations they find

of tension, suggesting that something
eccentric and unexpected could
happen at any time.
Each character brings a particular type
of budding disorder to the programme.
Despite Frankie seeing herself as a
rock of normality in the family, she
frequently slips into moments of
mania, paranoia and vigour which
demonstrate her urge to keep/make
the family “ordinary”; the oldest son

Middle treats audiences with a variety
of delightfully absurd escapades where
audiences are given the opportunity
to relish in the characters’ pitfalls.
However, it’s important to acknowledge
that this series contains significant
moments which happily resonate in
real life. It’s easy to forget sentiment
and drama within the pandemonium,
but The Middle always takes a moment
to address real-life topics. Scenes
like dropping your son off at college,
waiting to hear back on school tryouts, and maintaining communication
between a stressed husband and
wife – these are the moments which
show the human side to the everyday
madness and chaos of a busy home
life.
The humour ranges from wild slapstick
to charming wit, which will appeal to
younger and older audiences alike. The
premise being based around a family
guarantees that there is something
to laugh and cry about for practically
everyone. Simply put, ‘The Middle’ is
great fun and well worth a watch.

Named after a novel based on a young
boy and his dog, Belle and Sebastian
combine bright pop beats with
challenging lyrics that are uplifting and
thought-provoking in equal measure.
Hailing from Glasgow, Scotland, Belle
and Sebastian not only belong to
the so-called indie music scene, but
could be easily used to explain and
define the term ‘indie’, which is now
used rather more liberally, usually to
describe any act with skinny jeans and
scruffy haircuts. The term ‘indie’ was
originally a slang term for individual or
independent music, with the former
being very true of the latest offering
from Belle and Sebastian, Girls in
Peacetime Want to Dance.

The band use synth-based pop beats,
tightly linked drums and keyboards,
and vocals that subtly complement
and work with the music laid behind
it, rather than using a frontman lead
setup that is built around the vocals
(not that that is necessarily a bad
thing).
The opening track, “Nobody’s Empire”
begins with a pulsing wave of synth,
keyboard and drums, all carefully
washed out, and it instantly provides
a feel-good vibe. Sticking with the
traditional indie model of building
up throughout the track, the song
manages to wrap itself around the
listener; so by the end, don’t be
surprised if you find yourself singing
along.
Belle and Sebastian are flying the
flag for new music, and their new
album shows they’re not going to be
disappearing off anyone’s radar any
time soon.

RAISING THE PERSONAL MONITOR SCREEN
•Located on the inside of the seat you will find the audio
jack and entertainment system control unit.
•Insert the plug end of twin male connectors into the
audio jack A . The male plug connector pins are sized to
fit into the audio jack in one way.
•For AUDIO-ONLY entertainment, push the mode button
B that displays a
symbol.
•For MOVIE VIDEO entertainment, push the mode button
D that displays a
symbol.
• To change CHANNELS E or headset VOLUME C level,
press either the up or down arrow buttons next to the
choices.
• A channel number will be displayed in the small window
of the control unit, showing your selection in either audio
or movie video modes.
•Lift the centre arm rest cover F to expose the 8.4”
personal monitor.
