COPELAND CANOE CLUB info 2016
Welcome to Copeland Canoe Club We are pleased that you have chosen to find out about our club and paddlesport. We hope that this leaflet helps you access the many things that the club has to offer. We look forward to paddling with you! FAQs Q: Who are we? A: Copeland Canoe Club was formed in 1983 with the objective of introducing people to and sharing the pleasures of paddlesport. We are a family friendly recreational canoe club, based at the swimming pool in Whitehaven. Our mission is to encourage as many people as possible to safely enjoy the pleasure of paddling. Our commitment to equity and access means that anyone over the age of 10 and preferably able to swim 50 metres is welcome. We are Sports England ClubMark accredited, having the necessary Child Protection and Safety policies; we are affiliated to British Canoeing as one of their “Top Clubs”, with their extra accreditation of “Paddle-Ability” to help us understand and cope with the needs of disabled paddlers. Q: What do we do? A: Our members take part in lake trips, open (Canadian) canoeing, surfing, play boating, slalom, white water river running and sea paddling. We instruct from absolute beginners up to BC 3 star standard on the river and we can help arrange instruction for leadership awards and coach development. For most of the year members practice and are taught to roll in a nice warm swimming pool. In past years members have paddled on most of the Lakes in the Lake District as well as in Scotland. We have Sea kayaked around St Bees Head, paddled near Oban, visited the Farne Islands and many other places, kayaked in the French Alps, Austria, Italy, many (most!) local rivers and also in Scotland and Wales. In Summer from April to September on Tuesday nights we run Club Sessions outdoors as well as pool sessions. We use various places, meeting at the club garage - Richmond Hill Road, Whitehaven CA28 8ST. Coaching is available both indoors and outdoors. What to wear adventure training Something for everyone... In the pool, swimming gear! Many people wear a polyester top as well. Remember to bring a towel... Outdoors, if you do not already own specialist paddling gear, then follow these simple guidelines: You need to avoid cotton and denim clothes as you will get wet and these materials hold the water and make you cold. Manmade fibres and wool are the materials of choice. As a minimum you need a warm top, trousers and pair of old thin trainers that you don’t mind getting wet, together with a cheap nylon top to keep the wind off. If you have a pair of neoprene or plastic beach shoes they will be fine. If you have a wet suit, that’s fine but you still need a cagoule for the wind. Long John type wet suits without arms are best for paddling Most importantly, bring a towel and a change of clothes as you will probably get wet. Obviously everyone is different and you need to choose the layers that suit your own body and will keep you warm enough. We do have some cagoules etc for use by members, mostly smaller sizes for use by young people. Activities Club trips are held most weekends throughout the year and some evenings during the summer months. These club trips may involve: • Competitions (the club has competitors at all levels of Slalom Canoeing) • River trips • Surfing • Sea trips • Lake trips • Occasional weekend camps • Canoeing abroad Visit the club’s website at www.copelandcanoe.org.uk for up to date information.
