NOW HEAR THIS! February Meeting Cancelled FIELD
VOL 56 No. 3 March 2014 Newsletter February Meeting Cancelled Due to the snow storm that blanketed the area on February 12th and 13th, the LARC Board decided to cancel the meeting scheduled for the 14th. The storm brought 14 inches of snow to the Bedford area, while 11+ inches were reported in Lynchburg. The Board was concerned that secondary roads in outlying areas would not be safe for travel. LARC’s meeting on March 14th will feature Gerry Knowlton in a presentation on Winlink, a system that combines e-mail and a radio digital mode to serve emergency communications and traveling Hams. Gerry’s presentation was originally scheduled for the February meeting which was cancelled. At its meeting on January 9th, LARC’s Board elected to increase annual Membership Dues to $20.00, and Initiation Fees to $15.00. The increases become effective on March 1, 2014, for members who have not already paid their 2014 dues. UPCOMING EVENTS FIELD DAY 2014 This year’s Field Day Co-Chairmen are Geep Howell (WA4RTS) and Jim Lewis (KJ4GVJ). The event will be held on June 28th and 29th. That is a ways down the road, but it is not too early to start planning. Henry (K4YCR) is doing just that. He has been trying to tune up an antenna that was donated to LARC by LT Fortune (W4LTF), and hopes to have it ready for Field Day. Sadly, Henry will not be with us on Field Day. He will be on safari up Canada way. Mar 14th LARC Meeting Mar 15th-16th Mar 22nd Apr 26th Va QSO Party VOL 56 No. 3 - March 2014 ARES District 12 Page 2 Membership and Publicity Committee A Message From The Chairman: Race Dates For 2014 Mar 22 Apr 26 May 18 The LARC meeting is a good place for fellowship, entertainment and enlightenment. The strength of ham radio is within each individual member- an invisible force. Lets learn, help each other, and have fun. Suggestions and Ideas are always welcome. ~ Anna Bonda (W4EQU) Aug 31 Sep 27 Oct 3-5 Nov 1 Dec 13 Hal (KA4YNO) is already filling station positions for Terrapin Mountain and Promise Land. Please contact Hal and volunteer for one or both of these events Like experimenting ? Brian Justin (WA1ZMS), Chairmn of the Technical and Activities Committee, would like to get some QSO activity going on 10 GHz or 24 GHz as a club project. Here is how Brian envisions the project: The goal would be to build a set of 10 GHz or 24 GHz wide-band FM stations from parts that I own, and make it a club event to get people out to the local 5-grid squares while I stay on Apple Orchard and make QSOs, or flip the callsigns so that the ops on AO could earn an ARRL VUCC award for QSOs with all 5 grids that are local to us. It will take a few "classes" to show the gear and how it all works, but the results would be fun, and those people who are willing to make the effort could get a nice ARRL Certificate. Meeting Minutes For February: The project would promote activity on the band(s) and, I hope, generate interest in the bands above UHF. There are no Minutes for February. The meeting was cancelled due to the snow storm on the 12th and 13th. Members interested in this activity should contact Brian at the next LARC meeting or at (434) 3854688 VOL 56 No. 3 - March 2014 Page 3 Ham Radio Events ARRL Events March 1st—2nd . . . .
