The Battery: One Year Later
[ Post-Sandy ]
When The Battery Conservancy
was founded in 1994 to
rebuild and revitalize the 25
acres of historic parkland at
the tip of Manhattan, we never
imagined the gravity of world
events and climate change
that would create challenges
to our progress. As we near the 20-year mark,
we reflect on our accomplishments, the increased
strength of our organization to meet each demand,
and most importantly, the solid base of support
our work has generated.
2013, following Superstorm Sandy, was a year
of recovery marked by garden resilience and
construction progress. Our community offered
immediate help in the critical weeks following the
complete loss of our headquarters. Their generosity
gave us courage and restored our spirits as we
worked from borrowed desks and a neighborhood
storefront. By January, we had found a new office
at One Whitehall. The previous tenant graciously
left us all of their furniture and we were back
in business just one block from the park—
and 2013 began.

The Battery’s gardeners immediately reached out to their peers in
New Orleans to learn from their post-Katrina experiences. And we
followed their advice, with the help of 200+ volunteers:
2.Water, water, water: push salts below root level of plants

4. Wait for spring to determine plant loss
Since spring, more than 7,000 new plants have been restored to
the gardens. They are now thriving alongside the many salt-tolerant
perennials which greet our millions of visitors with their multitudes
of colors and textures.

As you turn the pages of The Battery Conservancy
News, you will:
• stroll the replanted gardens
• cool off in the rebuilt Bosque fountain
• visit the job sites of SeaGlass and the Bikeway
• take a look at the Battery Chair finalists
• applaud our student farmers who totaled more
than 2,500 this year
The Battery is not only a naturalistic balance to
Downtown’s urban fabric—it is a defining model
for sustainability and excellence in contemporary
landscape design.
It leads the way in demonstrating the importance
of waterfront parkland as the city’s buffer for the
storm surges of the future. In the coming year,
The Battery Conservancy will play a role in
developing the plan to safeguard Downtown’s
residential and commercial communities while
maintaining the beauty and oasis quality of these
irreplaceable 25 acres.

President’s Message
The hardest hit park feature was the much enjoyed spiral fountain with its spontaneous bursts of water that surprise
and enchant children of all ages. The fountain lost its electrical wiring, computers, and plumbing equipment. Generous
donations enabled us to build a new, upgraded system to a higher standard to safeguard against future flooding.

n April 18, NYC officials, donors, and Downtown leaders and
neighbors joined The Battery Conservancy and its Trustees
at the “Topping Off” of the SeaGlass Shell, celebrating its final
steel installation.
The Shell, designed by WXY Architecture + Urban Design,
spirals to a height of 35 feet. The innovative and sustainable
design—inspired by the chambered nautilus—creates air
circulation and heat transfer via natural ventilation.
43 curved glass windows
Cliff David
It is constructed of 24 complex structural forms which support
43 curved glass windows and rises to a magnificent oculus,
8 feet in diameter. Glass installation was completed on
October 21.
The circular ribbon of the stainless steel roof is composed
of 420 unique shingles. The interior of the roof performs
as the projection walls for the light show that will give riders
of SeaGlass a virtual underwater experience. Inspired by
the ocean’s beauty in the middle of a waterfront urban
park,
it will be a magical and memorable interactive adventure.
The 30 fish molds are in production and are made of
translucent fiberglass materials resembling seaglass.
Each fish will glow with interior LED lights which change
color and hue during the ride.
George Tsypin, the designer of the fish, describes his design
intent: “There is nothing more mysterious than water and the
bottom of the sea. The color, the shapes, the bioluminescent glow:
we think of the underwater world as a transcendent reality that
endlessly attracts, yet mystifies.”

he eagerly anticipated Battery Garden Bikeway, connecting the Hudson River
parks to the East River Esplanade, is in construction along Battery Place.
In 2001, the design was approved and capital funds were allocated, but
9/11 and the construction of the new #1 subway tunnel delayed the project.
These pictures show the current progress; Phase One of the Bikeway is to
be completed by May 2014. The Bikeway’s gardens are designed by
The Battery’s renowned Dutch plantsman, Piet Oudolf. The vast Battery
Green, with a quarter-mile oval walkway, is 65% complete. This
three-acre public gathering space is framed by a band of Mesabi
granite. The Green will offer park goers the unique, moveable
Battery Chair for their comfort and enjoyment. It will also
host festivals, outdoor movies, and live entertainment.
Included in the bikeway project are a newly
rebuilt comfort station and bike respite. Riders
will be able to take a moment to relax,
hydrate, and get air for their tires.
Phase Two along State Street will
begin next summer. Soon all bikers
will circumnavigate Manhattan
Island through The Battery!
The Battery Green in construction
Progress along Battery Place
n November 19, 2012, three weeks after Superstorm Sandy, The Battery Conservancy’s webbased chair competition accepted 679 design
submissions from 15 countries throughout the Americas.
Although we were flooded out of our office, the tools
of the digital age gave us the ability to process the
designs of more than 1,500 students and professionals
competing to create the unique, moveable Battery Chair.
The jurors worked over the winter to determine the
TOP 50 Designs. The Battery Conservancy presented the
designs online and invited the public’s opinions. In June,
the Top 50 banner exhibition opened in the Park, adorning
the fence enclosing The Battery Green construction
site—enabling visitors to see the designs where the
chairs will be used.
Now we present the FINALISTS: from Brazil, Canada,
Mexico, and the USA. The chairs will be prototyped this
spring—and tested by you and all who come to the park
to sit, lounge, rock, or bounce.

attery Urban Farm, in its third year,
saw a dramatic increase in students
from the community and schools
citywide: 2,500 student farmers, 50 schools,
2,500 lbs. of produce. The Battery Conservancy hosted 6 free weekend events and
raised funds to expand community outreach
and education programs.
The number of Farm Enrichment Visits
from schools and camp groups doubled.
600 sq. ft. of class gathering space and
native perennial plant and demonstration
gardens were added to accommodate the
demand. The City Seedlings Summer Program

quickly reached capacity, as did the Farm
Share Program.
The Garden to School Café Program
provided 540 lbs. of fresh produce to PS 3
and PS 397 cafeterias. New this year, we
donated 760 lbs. of produce to God’s Love
We Deliver’s Grocery Bag Program.
For adult education, we formalized the Farm
Education Apprentice Program. We piloted
an innovative Teacher Training Program that
prepares teachers with farming/gardening
skills and farm education knowledge, and
provides the tools to incorporate these into
their curriculum.
This success is generated by your support
through grants; sponsorships; school fundraisers; the Indiegogo campaign; shopping at
Whole Foods on our June 27th 5% Day; or
buying a kids’ meal at Blue Smoke this summer.
We thank you for helping us achieve our
goals: to empower NYC children to make
healthy eating choices through farm education; to encourage the cultivation of edible
gardens in communities throughout NYC;
and to achieve broad awareness of sustainability through systems thinking, sustainable
gardening practices, and responsible waste
management.

10th Battery Gardeners Luncheon: September 18, 2013
Thank you to the caring and generous supporters of the 10th Battery Gardeners Luncheon! It raised $270,000 to support our dedicated gardeners.
Our Guest Speaker, Piet Oudolf, spoke about his decade-plus association with The Battery Conservancy, his design of The Battery’s Horticulture Master Plan,
and his other projects in New York City and throughout the US and Europe. Your support in 2013 was critical to our gardeners as they restored the gardens in the
aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.
