n February 1993, the Foundation launched the ‘Innovate to Motivate’ mini-grant program.
Twenty-three grants were awarded for a total of $9,664.”
1989-1993 Report of the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation
1993 - Barbara Hawley, Nieman Elementary, was awarded $50 to purchase a Polaroid camera and film for her students to document
activities “as they occur.” The photos became story starters sparking the writing talents of her young students.
2014 - Teacher ideas and donor investment drive innovation and inspired teaching.
Every year, teachers approach the Foundation to put cutting edge technology in the hands
of their students to foster innovative, creative, real world learning at the highest level. Over
the last four years, teachers implemented Foundation-funded projects using e-readers, video
cameras, laptops, iPods, robots and iPads across the curriculum, at all grade levels.
As the district launches a new era in the education of
our children, we can count on our dedicated teachers to
continue to innovate. Their desire to bring the newest
technology to students will spark imaginations, inspire learning and drive future innovation.

Twenty-five years ago, a visionary group of community leaders banded
together to create the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation to provide an
additional measure of support. They built a great legacy.

Today, my children and yours benefit from their wise decisions and sacrifices
that have built an extraordinary school district. History counts for little,
however, if we squander that legacy.

The Shawnee Mission Education Foundation is focused on raising money to fund STEM (science,

he Denny Family Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Fund, established by Dr.
Craig and Terry Denny, will spark the imagination and innovative spirit of generations of Shawnee
Mission students. “We’d like to see something we’ve never seen before come from a program like this,”
said Dr. Denny. The generous $100,000 gift will advance STEM-focused initiatives throughout the
district.
“The generosity of donors, like the Denny family, through the Foundation is vital to ensuring our
students remain competitive on every level,” said Superintendent Dr. Jim Hinson. “The Denny’s
investment will provide unparalleled opportunities for our students and staff in the areas of science,
technology, engineering, and math. Expanding these subjects must be a priority for our district.”

“Not on our watch...”
I
n coordination with community resources the Shawnee Mission
Cares Fund responded to chaos by furnishing beds, linens and
a good night’s sleep to 13 students devastated by the April 25th
Overland Park apartment fire. You were there.
The needs exist. You are there meeting the need to help keep our
kids in school focused on learning. Twenty-seven children among
11 families have received food, winter coats, rent assistance avoiding
eviction and potential homelessness, transportation and beds.
