He’s a miracle…I doubt there will ever be another horse like him.” The pair qualified for the National Finals Rodeo in barrel racing for the first time when James was 14. The two ended up winning the WPRA World Championship every year from 1984 to 1993. They showed us that you didn't have to have a $10,000.00 barrel horse to win and because they did it, we thought we could too! GOOD STUFF Friends Make Life Easier People come and go, but some were meant to stay. Everything - including people traipsing in and out of our lives happens for a reason. We are introduced to new people all the time without ever knowing where our next friend will come from or how long we will be able to enjoy their company. www.shaklee.net/laurinemurtagh If you have a friend that you feel like you're going to finish your race with - please tell them so. We take great comfort in knowing that we have friends who intend to hang around for the long haul. 6 Santa Fe Good News Every season in life has its jewels & pieces of coal. What would have to happen in your life to end the season you are in? Enjoy the SEASONS of Your Life living the good life by: Lynn Trahan, Editor Our lives start out in school and it drags on forever, especially if you go on to college. No matter what you do though, that season eventually ends and we move on. If you become parents your whole world turns upside down – for years and years. Each stage seems to go on and on and on and you don’t think they will ever get old enough to get into school. And then school goes on and seems to last forever for the parents too. But the truth is we only get to have babies in our homes and lives for a very short time. When it’s your turn to care for parents, grandparents or even a spouse – that too seems to last forever. Taking care of people of any age can get to be tiresome after a while if we aren’t careful about our perspective. There will be a time in the future when we will wish we had relished the time we had with those we loved. Seasons come and go and in reality they are relatively brief. Each season teaches us a new skill, broadens our ability to love and stretches our mental and physical strengths to the point of When we look back they were only breaking sometimes. If we are wise here for a little while. we realize that to have faith in a God 7 Santa Fe Good News who doesn’t change with the seasons is the rock we need to lean on when the stretching and strengthening get to be too much to bear. So wherever you are, whatever season you are in in your life, make the most of it. You have to keep your eye on the prize which is – to enjoy every single season in your life, because there is a time and purpose for them all. *I learned this lesson one day while I was complaining to God about being married all my life. The end of the season would be to become a widow or divorced and I didn’t want either one of those seasons, so I quit complaining. If you can't say something nice, don't squawk at all! GOOD FOOD With that in mind, I like to cook a special dinner. I’ve done all sorts of things over the years, from heart shaped meatloaves to cinnamon love knots and usually chocolate cobbler or brownies for dessert. Chocolate is a must for Valentine’s in my book. " All it takes to make Valentine’s Day special is showing your love to those you love!" Christy Jordan My simple but special Valentine’s Table... I wanted to share some fun Valentine’s recipes with you in addition to a few decorating tips. Now, keep in mind, I’m no decorator. I have not within me the slightest fiber of interior decorating skill, but kids are easy to please and I lean on that! Having issued a disclaimer as to my lack of decorating skills, here are a few suggestions to make the meal extra special. A RED tablecloth is one of the most useful tablecloths you’ll ever have! – I got my red tablecloth for $12.99. It is washing machine and dryer safe, stain resistant, and…red! Red is important here because this is why I feel it is worth the investment. A red tablecloth can be used for: Valentine’s Day, Birthdays, 4th of July, and even Christmas! My mother and I strongly believe all you need are three tablecloth colors: Red, Green, and Ivory. The Green can be used for St Patrick’s Day, Easter, and Christmas (you can even put it cattywampus on top of the red one for a fun look). Ivory is for Thanksgiving and all other special occasions. So there you have your tablecloth wardrobe – if you’re interested in tablecloths, of course! Decorations – Katy Rose and I went to the Dollar Tree and spent a grand total of five dollars on some decorations for our table. We got four different balloons on a stick (one for each of us) and the I trimmed the sticks to be varying heights before putting them in a vase on the table. For another dollar we bought some glitter scatter hearts to sprinkle about. Pretty, festive, and cheap! In the past we’ve just decorated with construction paper. Using pink and white, we make place mats for each person and then cut out little paper hearts to decorate them and the table. Dishes – Back to red! My day to day dishes are Corelle Cafe Red. I love this color for the same reason as the tablecloth. They’re perfect for every day, but the red also matches with Valentine’s, Birthdays, Fourth of July (and other patriotic holidays), and Christmas. I prefer these dishes for their durability and price (about $19$25 for a 4 piece place setting at Wal Mart). I also love that they take up very little room in my cabinet. So if you were thinking of going to buy special dishes for Valentine’s dinner (hey, some people do that!), I’d go with Corelle because of their versatility. FOOD! - Let’s face it, it’s EXPENSIVE to eat out and truly, I think most of the food you could cook at home tastes better anyway. For a family of four to go to a moderately priced restaurant is easily over $40, but even fast food can go over $20 really quick. As I mentioned before, we’ve had all sorts of Valentine’s menus over the years, but this year we’ll be having Steak Kabobs and Rice Pilaf. (Recipes on next page.)You can easily feed 4-6 people (eight if you double the rice recipe) for around $20.00 with these two recipes. and Don’t Forget Dessert, here are some of my favorites.! Cappuccino Cake Fresh Strawberry Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting Strawberry Pie Symphony Brownies Valentine’s Day Notes Remember, Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate all those you love. Often we center Valentine’s wishes on our spouses or significant others. I’ll never forget though when I was five years old walking into the kitchen Valentine’s Day morning. I found a vase of roses for my mother, with two smaller vases on either side that had a single rose in each one for my sister and myself. I had not expected it and that made my heart fill even more! In today’s rapidly expanding and changing world, we never know how much distance might be between us and our loved ones from one day to the next. So don’t miss an opportunity to show all those you love - how much they mean to you. Be it a special meal you cook, a phone call, or even a note. Don’t wait. Happy Valentine’s Day! Love, Christy This is More Than Just a Cookbook... It's a REAL GOOD READ! I set out to write the one cookbook that I myself would use the most when it came to planning suppers for my family- I hope you'll find it as useful as I intended it to be. Please keep in mind, though, that the recipes in this book and the meals you and I make are really just a tool to bring our families and friends together. Because, at the end of the day, the supper table is where we teach our families where they came from and they let us know where they hope to go. Values, heritage, history, dreams, and encouragement are passed around with the serving platters and roots grow a little deeper with each bite. We may have high hopes and aspirations when we set off into the world each morning, but if you really want to make the world a better place, end the day by coming home to supper. -Christy Jordan Order her NEW COOKBOOK, sign up for her newsletter and friend her on Facebook by clicking right here! 10 Santa Fe Good News Oven Steak Kabobs Instructions 1. Mike's family just like mine, got a new baby and did not want us any longer, so we got dumped at the shelter. Our kennels were far apart, but we used to "yap" to each other hoping for a reply! Then one day someone came along with a paper and pen and I heard her say "this one" as she wrote on her page. I yapped to Mike what I'd heard and he said he saw the lady, but she passed him up. Later that day another lady came by my kennel and said "I'll foster Jack for rescue". She got to take me to her house and told me I'd escaped being put down, whatever that meant. 14 14 Santa Santa Fe Fe Good Good News News It was good to be in a home again with other dogs, going for walks, being petted, and getting a treat at night as I went to bed. About a week later, I heard a familiar yap. Could it be Mike? Sure enough, he was being fostered by the same lady. We had a great time playing with the family and playing with each other in the yard. Then one day we went to "adoptions". As Mike and I were sitting there along came a family to visit with us. I just loved the kids, Mike did too. The boys said they wanted us. The Mom and Dad looked at each other, then at the boys, and at us. And then they said "YES"! The boys and us - we were all jumping for joy! The home had been pre-approved so we both got to go home with them that day. We could hardly believe it! We are living with a wonderful loving family, who love to play with us and accept our cuddling and "kisseys". Maybe we should have been named "Lucky" and "Luckier"? We sure hope you liked our story and will soon adopt a pet from the shelter - they are all waiting and hopeful just like we were! Santa Fe Council on Alcoholism & Drug Abuse, Inc. P. O. Our goal is to help people fight the GOOD fight. GOOD IDEAS Do you have people offering to help you? Everyone says "call me" if you need anything and people really do need help, but noone ever calls for any. Solution? Put things that you need done or picked up or handled on post-it notes on the refrigerator door and the next person that offers to help - let them! It's great for both people - you get the help you need and you don't have to feel like you are putting anyone out & they get to choose a way to help you that's best for them. When there are no sticky notes left on the fridge, you should be in pretty GOOD shape. The Changing Times: Funeral Food Southern hospitality always dictates funeral food but... what if it's a widow or widower who will be stuck will all the leftovers? What if the family isn't as huge as it once was or the funeral is out of town? Consider a gift card to their favorite restaurant to be used later - when they might actually enjoy getting out. You can even order them online these days to be sent via email at www.opentable. com/Houston or pick one up at your local grocery store. Sometimes it's much kinder to take a new widow out to dinner than to take food to their home and force them to have to be polite and take it and the dirty dishes that go with it. With a gift card you still get to arrive with something in your hand, but there is no chance of making matters worse for the people who are already overwhelmed with grief. 16 Santa Fe Good News Often it takes persistent love to reach out to others and include them. Laura Chevalier You Can Love Somebody! Y Because I Love - ou only have two rules in life to follow. Love me and love everyone else. Just worry about those two things and they will fix everything else. It’s not about obligations or things or circumstances. It’s all about love. No matter what your circumstances are, choose to love and you’ll be fine. Ignore love and try to fix things yourself and you’ll be lost, frustrated and weak. Because I love God, I do my civic duties because He told me to. Love empowers you and makes you strong. It always has and it always will. Love is perfect because it always does the right thing and puts you in the right frame of mind. When you choose to love, all the other choices you have to make every day are already made for you. It takes out all the guess work. Love changes things. It changes how you feel, how others feel about you and it will change your circumstances. Because I love my kids and grand kids I take voting very seriously, because it affects their futures. Love works when common sense won’t. Love gives you peace. Peace in your heart, your mind and your soul. Love is a perfect fit. I designed you to need it. You need to give it as well as get it and both of those things happen automatically when you choose to focus on what’s important. Let everything else take care of itself and you focus on these two things. I Vote And because I love my country, I vote. Author Unknown There’s a reason I said it never fails, that’s because it doesn’t. It will fix anything you want fixed. It will mend the broken hearted, heal the sick, and cure the frustrated. Sometimes it’s warm, sometimes it’s determined and all the time it’s the right choice. It’s just plain good for you. Take your life, fill it with love and then go about doing what I put you here to do. Love somebody! GOD 17 Santa Fe Good News * CORNER * * * * * THE The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ was organized for charitable, educational and scientific purposes to encourage and promote the breeding, raising and marketing of better livestock and farm products at public fairs and to promote and maintain research and educational functions within the livestock industry. It is the general policy of the Show to utilize, in the fiscal year subsequent to which it is earned, the excess of its revenue over expenses for the furtherance of its exempt purpose, including the granting and/or funding of scholarships, educational endowments, agricultural research projects and other similar programs and the funding of related capital additions and improvements. The funds of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo are used exclusively to meet necessary expenses for its upkeep and operation and in furtherance of the exempt purpose of the organization. Since its beginning in 1932, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has committed more than $350 million to scholarships, research, endowments, calf scramble participants, junior show exhibitors, School Art participants, and other educational youth programs. 2014 RODEO Line-Up 18 Santa Fe Good News 2014 RODEO Volunteers The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ would not be possible without the dedication and support of more than 28,000 volunteers. They are the lifeline of the organization, and make the “Show With a Heart” beat daily. “My fellow volunteers are some of the most amazing individuals you will ever come into contact with, and as a volunteer, I am proud to serve as the chairman of the board,” said R.H. “Steve” Stevens Jr. “It is humbling to watch these 28,000 people give of their time and efforts so freely to ensure that the Show is able to provide millions of dollars to the youth of Texas.” Show volunteers come from all walks of life. They are your neighbors, co-workers, family members and friends. They include doctors, teachers, lawyers, stay-at-home-mothers, farmers, city workers, public figures and business executives. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo works to encourage better agricultural production in Texas and supports thousands of students with educational funding, all while providing affordable, family entertainment with superstar concerts, wild rodeo action and unique events around every corner. The preservation of this diverse Western heritage of the community would not be possible without the dedication of these volunteers. We’re the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and YOU made it all possible! Coming Next Month... Why RODEO is SO GOOD for SO MANY Reasons We are going to scratch the surface & share a few. Trail Rides A Piece of History Nothing brings to mind the Old West like a modern-day trail ride. Pioneers created trails as they moved west in search of a dream and cowboys created trails to take cattle to major market centers. While these routes are no longer a necessity in daily life, more than 3,000 riders saddle up each February to relive the Old West. In January of 1952, several men formed the very first trail ride as a way to increase awareness of the Show. Though only four men made the first journey from Brenham, Texas, the attention they raised attracted more publicity than ever expected, as more than 80 men signed up the next year. The trail rides are a signature tradition of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo today. Today’s riders hit the trail in an attempt to recreate the Old West, and in doing so, find a common ground that links us all to the Show. A sense of history and pride resides in each rider; igniting envy and intrigue in each child as they watch the trail riders and hope to one day join them. Star Trail of Fame The Star Trail of Fame, located outside of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ offices in Reliant Center, pays tribute to stars that have made an impact on the Show. Currently, eight stars are honored with a gold plaque to commemorate their many years of first-class, musical entertainment at RodeoHouston®. And on March 17th, 2013, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo announced that it would award an annual four-year college scholarship in honor of George Strait. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo George Strait Scholarship will be awarded annually, from this year forward, through the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s scholarship program. In perpetuity, this scholarship will honor the legacy of George Strait and his partnership and friendship with our Show. GOOD NEWS GO George! Who are the STARS? Gene Autry, Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson, Reba, Elvis, Charlie Pride, Roy Rogers and George Strait. 20 Santa Fe Good News 2014 RODEO Parade March 1st A Celebration of Western Heritage Every February since 1938 the nation’s fourth largest city is transformed from a bustling metropolis to a down-home celebration of Western heritage. Please VOTE this year because "Times have changed." See page 24. In an effort to make voting as profitable and painless as possible, we contacted all of the candidates from the JP positions all the way to the Congressional positions and gave them a FREE opportunity to promote their campaigns. We did not contact the Chief Justice or Court of Appeals candidates or anyone without an opponent because there were just too many to do all of them too. WHY did we do this? 1. Because it offers an even playing field for candidates without war chests. 2. Because it offers a one stop shop for our readers to take a good look at the candidates. 3. Because it offers our readers an opportunity to put the face with the name of every option they have. 4. Because it offers those who can’t or won’t go out to the forums something to base their vote on, other than name recognition, which we all know is bought and paid for. 5. Because it also offers our readers an opportunity to get a feeling for the candidate because each article is COMPLETELY UNEDITED and if nothing else - they should have at least approved it. 6. And it gives the candidates an opportunity to share whatever they want (you) the voters to know without a time constraint or cutting down any more trees for full color glossy brochures to be thrown away. The candidates you see here today followed through and submitted their photos and articles. Those whose names appear, but you do not see here are those who for whatever reason chose not to take advantage of the offer. We contacted each candidate just like you would be able to by email from their websites, facebook pages or as a last resort by phone if a number was available. Some never responded at all, some said they would, but didn't follow through and some could not follow the rules and had to be excluded. We should all personally thank all of the candidates for offering to serve us because - it's not easy or cheap to run for a political office. It is a shame that they have to attend all of the dog and pony shows that they do for an audience of less than 50 people most of the time. (Usually there are more candidates than citizens at these events, it's very sad.) Our system basically makes you put yourself on the altar to be sacrificed or you cannot possibly win. Many thanks to all of the contributors and candidates who have offered to serve us. 22 Santa Fe Good News 21 GOOD REASONS to subscribe to the GOOD NEWS! 1. It’s FREE! 2. Now that we have the internet at our fingertips, times are changing. * As a matter of fact there will come a time in the not too distant future when the candidates sending these out will LOSE votes because they are destroying trees to promote themselves. 2010 Sweep or Red Tidal Wave? B ill King, former Kemah Mayor wrote an editorial in 2011 about the “shameful spectacle” in Washington “masquerading as a national government.” The spectacle of which he referred was the partisan politics that continues to subvert good public policy in our Nation’s Capitol. It has also subverted good government here at home in Galveston County. The TEA parties phenomenal impact in 2010 was a good thing but, although they brought about change, the unforeseen impact was that some straight ticket beneficiaries were neither qualified nor fit to hold office. Some ran only because they anticipated sweeping change - not because of a burning desire to serve. I have also recruited a panel of scientists, engineers, and scholars to develop a proposal that the next two Desalinization plants be in Galveston and Jefferson Counties. After saving me from what the FAA described as an “Unsurvivable Plane Crash,” God empowered me to serve others from the comforts I received from my Savior! The crash caused a moderate brain injury, and returning to higher education was both my comfort and rehabilitation while I also endured a three year series of sixteen, sequential orthopedic operations. This started my pathway to earning three more degrees including medical training in the British Commonwealth which allowed me to serve as a empathetic clinical scientist. Last year I was chosen to be a Fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine after serving as a professor at McMurry University. So I am passionate about education from both sides of the lectern. When I heard my “calling” for public service, these were the bills He gave me. 1) Return our US Education Buck Willis System to Being the Best in the World! We’ll do this by increasing the number of teachers for smaller class sizes in primary and secondary schools to achieve greater learning. Also we will increase the number of class hours and return occupational education to high school. 2) Raise the Minimum Wage! A wage of $11 are “survival” earnings, which would allow workers to take classes for increased skills or apprenticeships for a lifetime of higher earnings. 3) Bring new jobs from opportunities like the SabineNeches Waterway Improvement (This means 70,000 new, goodpaying jobs!) a.Desalinization Plant proposal is already underway requiring 10,000 new jobs b. Micah 6:8 26 Santa Fe Good News Truck Stop Pearl Fine Cigars by: The Daily Smoker One Sunday afternoon the Boss and I had the little hurricane (our grandbaby Jake) with us and we were headed to the Winnie, TX to the Old Time Trade Days. We stopped along the way at a truck stop that has a large walk in humidor in Mont Belvieu, Texas. The Conoco truck stop (10403 I-10 East Mont Belvieu, Texas) is located on the southwest corner of the intersection and I’ve bought many cigars here. They may not always be the cheapest, but they have always been reasonable and carry quite a large selection. KEEP CALM & Enjoy a Fine Cigar... The Boss wanted a cigar review for this month’s edition, so she went in and selected four premium cigars for me to evaluate. She hit a grand slam home run with the very first cigar I smoked. It’s a Perla DelMar (Pearl of the Sea) and it’s truly a gem. The cigar is made by the J.C. Newman Cigar Company. The Boss said that she paid just over five dollars for this box pressed cigar. By the term box pressed, I mean that this 6 ¼” long cigar in 54 ring gauge is not round, it’s sort of square by virtue of being so tightly packed into the box that it’s taken the shape of the box. I fired it up and the first taste was slightly sweet with a mild flavor. It was smooth throughout its length, but the sweet flavor started to fade towards the end. Mind you I thought it was great throughout the cigar, it’s just that the sweetness just wasn’t as prominent towards the end. The cigar drew well and produced lots of smoke from each puff. I noticed that the cigar felt a little light compared to others I’ve smoked of the same size. I also noted that the cigar felt soft to the touch, but maybe that was a sign of freshness. I tend to smoke in the evening after I get off work so I only smoked about half the length of the cigar and left the other half in the ashtray so I could smoke it today while writing the review. It relit easily and is just as smooth and creamy as the first half was. This cigar is Perla Del Mar G size, and there are four other sizes. The large band has exquisite art work depicting a light house and a 17th century three mast schooner sailing by it. The blue accent and the gold raised scroll adds depth to the miniature work of art. This band will go into my collection. I highly recommend the Perla Del Mar for those of you that enjoy a mild, slightly sweet, smooth and creamy smoke. Till next time, take a few minutes out of your busy schedule and smoke a fine cigar. It will make all of your efforts seem more worthwhile. 27 Santa Fe Good News Candidate for the 212th District Court At my core, I am a family man who is from Galveston County, Texas. Asparagus... Cancer Cure??? Maybe, maybe not... but worth the read. Several years ago I met a man seeking asparagus for a friend who had cancer. He gave me a copy of an article, entitled "Asparagus For Cancer" printed in the Cancer News Journal, December 1979. I will share it here, just as it was shared with me: I am a biochemist, and have specialized in the relation of diet to health for over 50 years. Several years ago, I learned of the discovery of Richard R. Vensal, D.D.S. that asparagus might cure cancer. Since then, I have worked with him on his project. We have accumulated a number of favorable case histories. Here are a few examples: Case No. 1- A man with an almost hopeless case of Hodgkin's disease (cancer of the lymph glands) who was completely incapacitated. Within 1 year of starting the asparagus therapy, his doctors were unable to detect any signs of cancer, and he was back on a schedule of strenuous exercise. Case No. 2 - A successful businessman, 68 years old, suffered from cancer of the bladder for 16 years. After years of medical treatments, including radiation without improvement, he began taking asparagus. Within 3 months, examinations revealed that his bladder tumor had disappeared and that his kidneys were normal. Case No. 3 - On March 5th 1971, a man who had lung cancer was put on the operating table where they found lung cancer so widely spread that it was inoperable. The surgeon sewed him up and declared his case hopeless. On April 5th he heard about the Asparagus therapy and immediately started taking it. By August, x-ray pictures revealed that all signs of the cancer had disappeared. He is now back at his regular business routine. Case No. 4 - A woman had been troubled for a number of years with skin cancer. She developed different skin cancers which were diagnosed by the acting specialist as advanced. Within 3 months after beginning asparagus therapy, the skin specialist said her skin looked fine with no more skin lesions. This woman reported that the asparagus therapy also cured her kidney disease, which had started in 1949. She had over 10 operations for kidney stones, and was receiving government disability payments for an inoperable, terminal, kidney condition. I am therefore appealing to readers to spread this good news and help us to gather a large number of case histories that will overwhelm the medical skeptics about this unbelievably simple and natural remedy. As a biochemist, I have made an extensive study of all aspects of cancer, and all of the proposed cures. As a result, I am convinced that asparagus fits in better with the latest theories about cancer. For the treatment, asparagus should be cooked before using. Fresh or canned asparagus can be used. Many divorcing parents treat their child as property to be won rather than as a precious individual to be protected. considering what is in the best interest of the child. Some judges, no matter the situation, apply the same cookie cutter approach to all custody disputes. I believe family dynamics are as varied as the individual personalities involved, and that’s why I don’t believe one answer fits all situations. I believe a judge should tailor each custody order to properly fit the family dynamics within the boundaries of the law. If you ask a child of divorcing parents what they want most, the child will tell you they just want peace. The parents whom the child relies upon for food, shelter, clothing and love are at war. The child is constantly exposed to bickering and fighting between the parents, constantly being drawn into the parent’s arguments and then asked to take sides between the parents. Wilfried Schmitz It is time we reinstitute civility in the Family Court and stop the war. I will bring to the Court, not only my competency as a family law attorney, but also my integrity. T Ramblings of an Old Man oday’s modern man has become way too dependent on the police and fire departments, paramedics, and other governmental agencies in my opinion. The Americans of the 19th century that settled this land, could effectively utilize firearms to defend themselves and their family. They could doctor a snake bite, set a broken leg, and when need be, remove a bullet or arrow from a family member’s body. The one thing they fell short on was putting out fires. If your cabin caught fire, most likely it would burn down. I believe that a real man who is the head of a family unit should be proficient with all types of firearms and that he should make sure that every member of his family is trained in firearm SAFETY and usage. A mother should be able to defend herself and her children when her man is away. And when children FIREMEN & POLICEMEN are not the only REAL MEN left in this world. I wasn’t aware of it at the time, but when I married my teenage wife, she had already been trained and was very proficient with a handgun. She was trained by her father, a Kentucky hillbilly who hunted to feed his family. Although she’s a natural lefty, he trained her how to shoot right handed. To this day some 36 years later, she can put all five rounds of her Smith and Wesson revolver in a target accurately, just as fast as she can pull the trigger. Different children mature at different ages and the parents should make the decision when it’s time to train their children. (Caveat: Make sure to follow all laws concerning firearms usage in your area.) Firearms are tools. They have no evil souls. They don’t make decisions about when or who to fire at, just like a claw hammer doesn’t decide when or how hard to strike a nail. Man’s ability to effectively utilize tools is what places us above animals in the food chain. It’s egregious to me that in today’s society so many people die from home related injuries that could have been dealt with by someone with just minimal first aid training. Do you know what to do if you child is hurt? I mean can you apply common sense first aid? Do you need to call paramedics for absolutely everything? How long will it take them to arrive? Can you get your child to the emergency room faster than they can? I have firsthand knowledge of a teenager who lost two fingers and part of his thumb in a table saw accident and the response time for the ambulance was over 90 minutes to their rural Georgia home. He was home alone trying to make a mother’s day present for his mom, but he did survive. All because he had been taught some basic first aid by his game warden father and he didn’t panic. He wrapped the wound tightly in clean bed sheets and held it above his head, and he even put his severed digits in ice so they could be sewn back on. Unfortunately the ambulance couldn’t get to him in time because they were out of the county transporting a heart attack patient to a hospital some fifty miles away. Continued on page 39. I established Galveston County’s first Public Integrity Section to investigate and prosecute offenses committed by public servants. This bold action created pushback from some in the power establishment, but it is vital to the future integrity of our public officials and institutions. I helped establish the first Veterans Treatment Court and the first Drug Court in Galveston County. I’ve worked to increase cooperation among law enforcement and other prosecutors’ offices across the state, saving taxpayer dollars through cooperative special prosecution agreements. I expanded the No Refusal Program through grant funding, and I remain committed to aggressively prosecuting drunk drivers to make Galveston County a safer place, both for our visitors and our residents. I came into office having already Do you have a few dollars a month you can spare to help kids? I oversee a busy office, with a dedicated staff of more than 70 people, including 41 full-time prosecutors. My vision is simple: to seek justice -- to do what’s right -- in every case. Holding fast to that vision has produced great results, including higher conviction rates, lower dismissal rates, and higher prosecutor morale. In my time serving as your District Attorney, I have helped build a safer Galveston County with an improved reputation throughout the State. I look forward to continuing to serve you in the future. Kieschnick I am forever grateful that my parents, Rev. John and Elaine Kieschnick, raised me in the Lutheran Church on traditional values. I am also proud that my understanding and application of time-tested Biblical tenets played a role in my affiliation with the Republican Party and my commitment to the Party’s core principles. Jonathan C Kieschnick Judge, County Court at Law #2 Jonathan C Kieschnick Barbara E Roberts (I) However, as an attorney for the last 17 years and as a current candidate for judge, I have grown increasingly dismayed by the infiltration of partisan political rancor and rank political influence – by Democrat and Republican judges – in our courts. Our heroes in the military have sacrificed their very lives, in part, to protect a judicial system that was designed to be the greatest in the world by offering “justice for all” – regardless of political affiliation, economic status or social standing. of our judges. The failure to follow these essential and “conservative” judicial ground rules will continue to erode the public trust in our system of justice. No citizen who walks into a courtroom in this country should be more concerned about whether the judge is a Democrat or Republican rather than whether the rule of law is on his/her side. No matter whether the judge is a Democrat or Republican, our citizens deserve a fair shake, a level playing field and equal protection under the law. If given the opportunity to serve as your judge, I promise that I will never forget that deep-rooted concern for the protection of our judicial system from political influence prompted our founding fathers to adopt the brilliant concept of “separation of powers” in the United States Constitution. I will always remember that no litigant – and no judge – is above the law. In church this Sunday, our minister very appropriately prayed that our public servants be “instruments of freedom, justice and peace.” It was a succinct, timely and necessary plea. After all, in response to what is required of us, Micah 6:8 reminds us all to “do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with [our] God.” No political party or public official is exempt from these commands. I am running for Judge of County Court at Law No. 2 to do my part to preserve the integrity and legitimacy of our system of justice in Galveston County. Too many brave men and women have risked and lost too much for us to sit idly as our court system succumbs and loses legitimacy to the ever-creeping threat of political influence and activism. I am asking for your support in the upcoming Republican Primary. I am proud of the record of County Court No. 2 and I want to share with you the accomplishments of the Court. Barbara E Roberts Judge, County Court at Law #2 Jonathan C Kieschnick Barbara E Roberts (I) First, it is important to understand the work of the Court. The Court hears misdemeanor cases, in which the maximum punishment is one year in county jail and/or a fine of $4,000. Additionally, the Court hears civil cases, family law cases, and juvenile cases, which involve crimes committed by individuals younger than 17 years of age. I am the Judge who determined that a 14-year old should stand trial as an adult for brutally stabbing to death an elderly woman. The Court also hears appeals from JP courts and eminent domain cases. During my tenure, I have substantially reduced the number of cases on the Court’s docket by setting cases for trial, ordering the parties to mediation, and dismissing frivolous lawsuits. I have instituted a policy in which anyone who is arrested for Driving While Intoxicated must install an interlock device on his or her vehicle as a condition of bail. I monitor the monthly reports from the interlock device companies and revoke bail for those in violation. cases are not delayed, and by ensuring that I apply the law, as established by the Legislature, in a timely, efficient, and fair manner to each case. I believe justice is administered by being respectful to every individual who appears before me. I believe justice is administered by being compassionate to all who stand in front of the bench. I decide cases by applying the law to the individual facts of the case. I never have and never will make a decision based on a party’s political affiliation or status in the community. The principals my opponent is running on are not new or unique – they are principals all judges strive to achieve: impartiality, applying the rule of law to all cases, protecting the innocent, holding wrongdoers accountable, and serving as a public servant. I have been applying these principals, every day, to my work as Judge of County Court No. 2. I am an experienced attorney and, more importantly, an experienced judge, who is hearing cases on a timely basis and making decisions in a fair and equitable manner, according to the law. I am a Christian and active in my parish. I am also very active in my community. Please visit my website for further information. I am asking for your vote in the Republican primary. Thank-you. When I took office in 2011, I made promises and I have kept those promises. I promised to lower taxes and I have given a tax cut for every year that I have been in office, saving taxpayers millions of dollars. I promised to ease the tax burden for our seniors. I have done that. I successfully advocated for a split payment plan, to make paying taxes easier for our seniors. I have backed that up. I worked with TxDOT to get a turn lane installed on Highway 6 in front of Santa Fe High School, keeping our kids safe, and at no direct cost to taxpayers. I got the historical cemetery in Santa Fe cleaned up and fully restored. Those are only a couple of many improvements we have made in Precinct 2. I promised to cut county spending. Once again, I have done that. I worked successfully to get our jail inmate healthcare contract rebid, saving taxpayers over $1 million annually. I reformed the operation of San Luis Pass toll bridge, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars. I am currently in the process of negotiating the design and building of a road and rail bridge from Galveston to Pelican Island that will create thousands of good jobs and a billion dollars of ad valorem real estate value, in addition to creating a major port for Galveston County. I’m also fighting for the construction of the Ike Dike which will serve as a surge protector against flooding from future hurricanes. In addition to that, the Ike Dike will help lower insurance rates and protect the petrochemical plants in Texas City and Chocolate Bayou. The protection of our property and families will also be a direct result of the Ike Dike. I work hard to save you money by digging into the details. I apply common sense and business experience to hold bureaucracy accountable, and make sure our local government spends your money as carefully as you do. Your product meets all the specs and your bid is best, but someone else gets the business. By the time you hire a lawyer to fight your case, there is no money left in it for your business. This new county attorney would sue the court to make it do what is right and your taxes would have already paid for his services. Thirty years ago commissioners court took Social Security away from the county employees, but kept it for themselves. This is commonly known as the Alternate Plan. The employees seem to like it because many of them have used it as a payroll budget plan rather than a retirement plan, taking money out from time to time. We could bring this up to date by making it a payroll budget plan leaving the employee with about 30% more money to spend at home when he takes his money out. Also, It could be funded by local banks, thereby keeping that money in Galveston County. I've been a salesman all my life. I know how to bring businesses to Galveston County. IT FIXE S EVER YTHIN G! Stephanie Barnett Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1 Stephanie Barnett Alison Cox Toni Randall (I) Stephanie Barnett, is running for Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1. Barnett is the only candidate in the race who is an attorney. She is a life-long Republican who grew up in Webster, Texas. She graduated from Clear Creek High School in 1979. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southwest Texas State University in 1983. Barnett received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston Law Center in May 1989 and was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in November 1989. She was admitted to practice before the Southern District of Texas in January 1990. candidate for this position, it’s also the wide range of experiences that I’ve had in my lifetime. Before I became an attorney, I was in the restaurant and bar business. I spent over 15 years working at all types of different places, several of which were in the precinct. I also owned a shrimp boat for 4 years and for many years was an advocate for local shrimpers. I have a mechanical mind and am knowledgeable about all kinds of things that most women don’t even care about. I am smart, fair, honest, hardworking, dedicated, patient, dependable, and loyal. And, most importantly, I have common sense.” Barnett moved to Bacliff in 1986 when she started law school and has never left the area. She has practiced law in Galveston County for almost her entire career and has had her own law practice since 1993. She currently practices law in the areas of criminal law, traffic tickets, juvenile law and real estate. She has previously practiced law in the areas of bankruptcy, commercial litigation, consumer litigation, collections, insurance subrogation, personal injury, family law, probate law, and more. She has done court appointed criminal work in Harris County since 1990 and in Galveston County since 1993. She has also done court appointed juvenile work in Galveston County since 2002. She has over 24 years of experience working in the Justice of the Peace Courts in Galveston County and throughout Texas. She said “Most people associate the justice of the peace with traffic tickets, truancy or landlord/tenant issues, but it’s a much more serious job than that. A Justice of the Peace is a magistrate for all levels of criminal offenses which means they make decisions about the sufficiency of evidence for search warrants, arrest warrants and probable cause to arrest. If a mistake is made at this level it could result in a serious offender ultimately walking away free. I have practiced criminal law for over 24 years and will make certain this doesn’t happen.” Barnett is single and currently resides with her dogs and cats in Bayview, Texas. She is a Zeta Tau Alpha and a member of Bayside Lions Club and Bayshore Friends Church in Bayview. If elected she will be a fulltime Justice of the Peace. Locally grown keeps our money in our community. Locally grown lets you get to know your neighbors. Locally grown reduces our dependence on other countries. Locally grown just plain tastes better too! 55 Santa Fe Good News Jason O'Brien Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2 Joe Foley MW "Mike" Nelson Jason O'Brien Jim Schweitzer (I) Jim Schweitzer (I) My name is Jason O’Brien, and I am running for Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2. I am the only true lifelong Republican in the race. I firmly believe that I am the best candidate for the position for several reasons. I am a fiscally responsible conservative. On my time on the Santa Fe ISD school board, we lowered taxpayers’ property taxes three consecutive years, as well as increased teacher salaries during that same period. As a former police officer and current school board member for SFISD, I know what it takes to work cooperatively with local school boards, school administrations and local law enforcement agencies to implement an effective truancy program to ensure our children remain in school, and to eliminate the large number of dropouts our county has experienced for years. I understand the pivotal role education plays in giving our children the foundation to achieve and become outstanding citizens. I’ll also be prompt and diligent in collecting outstanding fees so we can ensure consistent administration of justice and ease the tax burden on Galveston County residents. Now that the county has consolidated precincts for the JP courts, I will manage the larger caseload by being your full-time judge. I will have both of my offices open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday, and I will explore the idea of implementing evening and/or weekend availability of the court as well. Taxpayers pay the Justice of the Peace and staff full-time salaries. Taxpayers have the right to expect that offices stay open full time to serve them. My judicial philosophy is that I believe in a common sense, conservative approach based on the United States Constitution and my belief in “One Nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.” Everyone in court should be treated impartially and fairly. A Justice of the Peace should apply the law firmly, as written. But, in doing so, a justice should also treat those who come before the court with dignity and respect. These are just a few of many reasons why I am the best candidate for Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2. I am a true conservative and lifelong member of this outstanding community, and I look forward to bringing conservative values to the bench. God bless America and God bless Galveston County. Vote Jason O’Brien for Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2. My name is Jim Schweitzer and I am running for re-election for Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2. After attending Catholic seminaries I graduated at the University of Houston Law Center. Since then my law office has been located in the Stewart Title Building in Galveston for over 30 years. on the way (June), and is in special OPs training as we speak! He aspires to be a career Marine and to eventually elevate to protecting the President of these United States. We couldn't have done it without you and another friend. Thank you so much, it could have gone so much differently.” In my life, God, my wife and our four children, this great Country and this great State matter to me the most. Every day I pray for wisdom and guidance to make a good decision which will affect someone’s life. Every day presents a set of new challenges for us. The Court along with community support programs can make a difference in young people’s lives. I hear similar comments frequently. Not everyone is helped but we try. The good kids generally won’t be seen again in court and approximately 5% are beyond assistance at our level. Many kids, however, are borderline, yet with community support and programs they make their way to adulthood. Many times we as a community are successful as you can see with the following unsolicited comment to my face book page: “You'll be glad to know the invaluable help you extended to my son.… has paid off in spades. In this new redistricted Precinct 2 the JP will be running a large business. The J.P. is responsible and accountable for the approximate million dollars passing through the doors annually. The J.P. is accountable for hiring and maintaining a staff of 6 to 10 clerks, filing multiple monthly statements, and working with 20 law enforcement Penny L Pope Justice of the Peace, Precinct 3 Darrell A Apffel Penny L Pope agencies. A Justice of the Peace must know the law and how to apply it to cases. I have presided over civil and criminal jury trials. It is necessary for this Judge to the know the Code of Criminal Procedure, the Penal Code, the Rules of Evidence, the Probate Code, the Property Code, the Family Code, the Government Code, etc. Our new redistricted Precinct 2 combines portions of 6 out of the 8 old J.P. precincts. This Justice of the Peace and his staffs will work to forge a new community. The court will now become the “People’s Court” for parts of League City, Dickinson, Texas City, and Galveston joining with Santa Fe, Hitchcock, Bayou Vista, Omega Bay, and Tiki Island. Not only do I have the zeal and dedication required by this position, but I have the necessary legal and trial experience. I want to continue making a difference in our community. I want to continue serving the citizens of Galveston County. FaceBook Jim Schweitzer (public figure and/or personal) My name is Penny L. Pope and I am a candidate for Justice of the Peace, Pct. 3 of Galveston County. I am currently Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2. I have held the position of Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2 since January 1993. I am now running for Precinct 3 because of redistricting of the Justice of the Peace/ Constable precincts that occurred in 2013. patience and objectivity, make me the best person for the job. As a judge, I strive to keep order in the Court by following Courtroom decorum, providing litigants (particularly those without an attorney) with sufficient time to present their case, and make decisions based upon the law and the evidence. Many have been disappointed by the decision made but I believe they realized due consideration was given to the case. I was born and raised on Galveston Island. After graduating from Ball High, I obtained my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science and my law degree from South Texas College of Law. My first experience as a lawyer was that as Assistant District Attorney for Galveston County from 1989-1992. I have also taught American Government part-time at College of the Mainland (1992-1994). After being elected Justice of the Peace, I began a private law practice, primarily in the areas of probate, family and real estate law. From 1997-2003, I served as a member of the Texas Judicial Council in Austin. In 2003, I joined the faculty of the Texas Justice Court Training Center, teaching either Justice Court Judges or Court Clerks from the fall of 2003 thru the spring of 2008 and once again for the 2009-2010 academic year. The primary issue in this campaign is the election of the best person for the job. Justice Precinct 3 is a minority majority precinct. I am African-American with 21 years of experience on the bench. I believe that my educational background, annual continuing education, experience on the bench and personal qualities, such as 57 Santa Fe Good News The Justice Court handles many types of cases, civil, criminal and administrative. In the civil realm, the cases range from landlord/tenant issues (evictions, failure to make repairs, return of security deposit), debts, auto accidents, and other types of cases where the amount in controversy does not exceed $10,000.00. On the criminal side, the court handles class c misdemeanors, such as traffic tickets, disorderly conduct, and public intoxication to name a few. A couple of examples of administrative cases include issues involving driver’s licenses and concealed hand gun licenses. I believe that I have the knowledge and skill to handle these cases appropriately. The Court also interacts with other agencies, such as law enforcement, and other county offices, such as the District Attorney’s Office, the auditor’s office and the county clerk’s office to name a few. I believe that over the years my office has developed and maintained a professional workable relationship with these offices. I would appreciate your support and vote in this election.
