Ever since Guccio Gucci founded his company in 1921 in Florence, horse riding has often inspired the motifs and symbols of our designs: Gucci’s green-red-green stripe, taken from a horse’s girth strap, and the famous Gucci horsebit are now recognised the world over as signatures of the House and iconic fashion details. Christophe Ameeuw, CEO EEM World In sporting terms, 2014 has been an incredible year for equestrian sports fans with the organisation of the World Equestrian Games in Normandy and the silver medals won by the French show jumping team. It has also been the year that Christophe Ameeuw, founder and creator the Masters Grand Slam Indoor, has succeeded in establishing its unique concept on three continents across the world. The Gucci Paris Masters, created in 2009, now shares the limelight with the Longines Hong-Kong Masters (since 2013), and since September, the Longines Los Angeles Masters: three leading events which now occupy key positions on the world sporting calendar. “The concept of Masters Grand Slam Indoor is based around four days of high-level sport and shows, with the world’s best show jumping riders and horses competing for a million dollars of prize money. Since the creation of the Gucci Paris Masters our aim has always been to put our sport in the international spotlight and create a unique meeting place for equestrian enthusiasts, opinion leaders, celebrities, decision-makers and the general public. All of them come together in a glamorous and festive environment which offers the best of show jumping, gastronomy, art and entertainment, in the presence of the most prestigious international brands, without forgetting our partnerships with many charitable organisations.” 6 For this 6th edition of the Gucci Paris Masters, the teams of EEM World have created a programme full of surprises. La Nuit des Masters (Thursday 4th December, 8pm) will officially launch the festivities, with a tribute to our French show jumping medallists at the 2014 WEG and an equestrian show staged by renowned artist Antonio Giarola. Sport will punctuate the days from Friday to Sunday, with key competitions daily for the world elite: the Longines Speed Challenge (Friday 5th December, 10pm), the Battle of the Sexes Longines (Saturday 6th December, 8pm) and the Gucci Grand Prix (Sunday 7th December, 3pm). Festive, amusing and colourful, the charity class, Style and Competition for AMADE (Saturday 6th December, 10.15pm), is always a favourite for the public who will cheer on the ten or so Pro-Am teams lead by Charlotte Casiraghi… The Gucci Paris Masters should once again offer its 50,000 spectators exciting moments. AN EVENT BY GUCCI 6th EDITION OF THE GUCCI PARIS MASTERS,A TRIED AND TESTED CONCEPT It is my pleasure to welcome you once again to the Gucci Masters. Gucci is extremely pleased to be sponsoring this annual European Grand Slam event for the sixth consecutive year. As ever, this year we can look forward to some truly exceptional events, like The Battle of the Sexes, where top female and male riders compete against one another on equal terms, and the Style and Competition Challenge, which benefits HRH Princess Caroline of Hanover’s AMADE Mondiale children’s charity (for this, national and international equestrians and celebrities join forces to ride in costume). Then, of course, we have the highlight of the three-day Gucci Paris Masters, the Gucci Grand Prix, when I will be cheering on Edwina Tops-Alexander and Jessica Springsteen, our talented ambassadors, who will both be wearing their Gucci colours with pride. Gucci’s founder, Guccio Gucci, had a genuine fascination with the equestrian world, recognising the excitement it stimulates and its historical, noble spirit. As the Creative Director at Gucci today, I frequently draw on the authentic heritage of the House, which lies at the root of its timeless appeal, and equestrianism is certainly a large part of the story. So, I speak not only for myself, but also for the House of Gucci, when I say welcome to the 2014 Gucci Paris Masters. I do hope you enjoy this very special event. 7 Frida Giannini, Gucci Creative Director In 2001 Charlotte Casiraghi joined the team of the 1976 Olympic Team Champion, Marcel Rozier. Successively coached by his sons, Philippe and Thierry, who are also international riders, the young woman began competing in junior competitions and then went on to amateur level. An experienced rider and a Gucci ambassador, Charlotte Casiraghi is seasoned rider at the Gucci Paris Masters. You are the face of Gucci’s new line of cosmetics: how did this new collaboration come about ? Charlotte Casiraghi : Frida Giannini, Gucci, and I have developed a very strong working relationship and a bond over the years, which has grown stronger over time. Our relationship began through a common passion for riding and Gucci’s iconic products. I am now very proud to extend this collaboration and it is an honour to be associated with the creation of this new line of cosmetics which is a very important project in the brand’s history. INTERVIEW WITH THE GUCCI AMBASSADORS Four ambassadors will be competing wearing Gucci’s colours: all four are leading figures and prominent riders. Charlotte Casiraghi and Australia’s Edwina TopsAlexander were the first female riders to represent the Florentine brand in competitions. Last year, they were joined by America’s Jessica Springsteen and French actor Guillaume Canet. Interviews... Edwina Tops-Alexander has been competing on the international circuit for fifteen years. She was the first woman to win the Zurich Grand Prix in 2008 and in 2009 she was the first woman to feature in the World Top 10. The Australian, who shines at the highest level, notched up victories with her loyal Itôt du Chateau and won the Global Champions Tour in both 2011 and 2012. She became ambassador for the Italian brand Gucci at the same time. With several top horses at her disposal such as Guccio, Old Chap Tame, and Ego Van Orti, Edwina Tops-Alexander is a formidable competitor. As part of the Gucci Team, you participate in a number of competitions. Are you also involved in other areas of the sport ? Charlotte Casiraghi : I have to train a lot to be able to compete in these high-level competitions with the Gucci Team. I am the honorary president of the Monaco Show Jumping competition which is obviously very dear to my heart. I try to improve the event every year and I am involved in its organisation. I created a Pro-Am event there where amateur and professional riders compete together. For the Gucci Paris Masters, this Pro-Am «Style and Competition» class created five years ago raises fund for the humanitarian charity «AMADE» presided over by my mother. This year once again, this competition full of surprises will combine equestrian sport and humanitarian efforts, a fundamental commitment that we share with Gucci. I am delighted that the concept was also a huge success at the Los Angeles Masters with the «Agassi Foundation for Education». Charlotte Casiraghi competing in the Invitational Trophy (CSI*) How do you combine elegance and performance in your sport on a daily basis ? Edwina Tops-Alexander (AUS) competing in the Masters (CSI5*) Edwina Tops-Alexander : «I think it has just become a routine and that it is especially important for sportswomen to stay feminine. Show jumping is a very elegant sport and luckily, as I am sponsored by Gucci, the collection created by Frida Giannini adds to that elegance while maintaining the sporting side. I think that when you feel good, it enhances your appearance. Are you involved in Gucci’s equestrian collection ? 8 Edwina Tops-Alexander : Yes and I love it. I have always been interested in fashion and I have always dreamed of becoming a fashion designer or stylist. I had this amazing opportunity to combine my career as a rider with the creation of my Gucci collection with Frida. We were very careful in the selection of technical materials which were essential to me as an athlete and we combined them to create an elegant summer and winter collection. I need to feel comfortable in my clothes when I ride and this collection enhances the elegance of the sport and of fashion. 9 An actor, writer, and director, Guillaume Canet is one of the most popular public figures of his generation in France. The filming of «Jappeloup» gave the French actor a taste for competitions and he went back to the show grounds he had left to follow his acting career. After a season of 1 star international competitions, he is now competing in CSI 2* competitions in major French events. As the only male ambassador on the Team, how did your collaboration with Gucci come about ? Jessica Springsteen grew up in New Jersey among the horses of the family ranch in Colt’s Neck. Jessica owes her love of horses and riding more to her mother, Patti Scialfa, than her father, Bruce Springsteen. The young women has been riding since she was five years old and has never ceased to progress in her sport, dividing her time between Jersey and Wellington (Florida). 2012 was decisive for the rider who competed in CSI 5* events. «Long listed» on the US team for the London Olympics, she also entered the Global Champions Tour with Vornado. The gifted and talented rider has now acquired Vindicat, the Olympic team champion with Great Britain’s Peter Charles. This is one more step towards accomplishing her dream of representing the U.S.A. at the Olympics. Guillaume Canet : «My collaboration with Gucci began at the 2012 Gucci Paris Masters. I met the Gucci teams including Robert Triefus, Marketing Director for Gucci, and Frida Giannini, Creative Director, there. We had already met once before at the Rome Film Festival where we talked about my desire to get back in the saddle and go back to competing. It was after that Gucci Paris Masters that we began working together. I am delighted about this as, in addition to the pride of riding wearing Gucci’s colours and being a part of its Team, I really like the people with whom I am working and there is a great ambiance ! You started competing again in 2013. How would you sum up your first season of competitions ? Guillaume Canet : I had not ridden for about twenty years and this return coincided with my need to take a break in my acting career. So I decided to devote much more time to competitions. This season has been intense because I took part in a lot of competitions and thanks to Gucci’s support I was even able to compete in some wonderful shows. I am really pleased with my year as I won many classes with some really good performances and placements in 1m40 or 1m45 Grand Prix, given that I began the season jumping at 1m10. I am really pleased with my progress and obviously my horses have played a major part in this achievement. I enjoy riding competitively and it has helped me to have a balanced lifestyle. I hope to continue for as long as possible and at the highest level possible. As a high-level rider, what is a typical day for you when you are not competing ? Jessica Springsteen : «Well, it depends on the day. I have different options. This autumn, I will be finishing my degree in Art and Media in New York. During the week, I am at university and at the weekends I go home to New Jersey where I ride my horses and prepare them for our next competition. I am pretty busy, especially if you include the shows. I will be able to devote all my time to my riding career once I graduate in December. How do you combine elegance and performance in your sport ? Jessica Springsteen : When I started riding a long time ago, my coaches passed on certain principles that I still try to uphold such as arriving for your lessons early with your boots polished, shirt tucked in, hair neatly done, a positive and ready to learn attitude. Good conduct and style are a mark of respect of the sport, your coach, and yourself. This includes your horses which should be groomed and ready and paying close attention during your lessons. These elements, added to a beautifully presented horse and rider, embody the equestrian ideal and facilitate performance! 10 Jessica Springsteen (USA) competing in the Masters (CSI5*) Guillaume Canet competing in the Prestige Trophy (CSI2*) 11 SPORT ON THE AGENDA The Gucci Paris Masters is four intense days of sport and emotions; four days of confrontations bringing together the discipline’s greatest champions, riders and horses, with a total of one million dollars in prize money. The Masters : a showcase of excellence Among the exceptional riders competing, France’s Patrice Delaveau, World individual and team silver medallist, is a loyal competitor of this Parisian event. With its luxury setting, exceptional athletes and sporting conditions, and top-of-the-range services, the Gucci Paris Masters, a CSI5* event, is, without a doubt, the «place to be» at the end of this year. Among the many 5 star competitions held all over the world, you never miss the Gucci Paris Masters. How do you manage it ? Patrice Delaveau : «It is true that we are spoilt for choice and the sports programme of each horse needs to be considered when choosing competitions. You have to be reasonable otherwise you end up doing too much. For me, the Gucci Paris Masters is ideal: we are supported by an enthusiastic public and it is just two hours’ drive from home. Do the Masters Grand Slam Indoor events require special horses ? Patrice Delaveau : The horses need to be used to indoor competitions and travel well as the trips to Hong Kong or Los Angeles are very long and they need to stay calm and not hurt themselves during the journey. With time, our top horses have become used to travelling far. It is probably more tiring for the grooms. You competed in the Longines Los Angeles Masters. How did your horses cope with the journey to America ? Patrice Delaveau : I do not think the horses were affected by jet lag. Horses sleep a lot but for short periods of time, half an hour here, half an hour there, and they generally sleep standing up. However, what can affect them is a change in feeding time. That is why I prefer competitions in France like the Gucci Paris Masters. Coming to Villepinte does not require as much travelling and it is a real pleasure to compete in front of the home crowd. Five stars is the highest level of international competition in show jumping and it is also the guarantee of seeing the discipline’s stars at their best. Known as the «Masters», the six CSI5* classes of the Gucci Paris Masters are reserved for the forty best riders in the world including : Scott Brash (GBR) olympic team champion and current World no. 1 Ludger Beerbaum (GER) multi-medallist and World no. 2 Kent Farrington (USA) team bronze medallist at the WEG and World no. 4 Kevin Staut (FRA) world team silver medallist and World no. 5 Patrice Delaveau (FRA) world individual and team silver medallist and World no. 6 Daniel Deusser (GER) winner of the World Cup Final and World no. 7 Maikel van der Vleuten (NED) world team champion and World no. 9 Steve Guerdat (SWI) olympic champion and World no. 11 Rolf-Göran Bengtsson (SWE) 2008 olympic individual silver medallist and World no. 13 Patrice Delaveau competing in the Masters (CSI5*) Pénélope Leprévost (FRA) world team silver medallist and World no. 12 Roger Yves Bost (FRA) current European champion Meredith Michaels Beerbaum (GER) multi-medallist and the only women to have been World no. 1 in the FEI ranking Georgina Bloomberg (USA) a member of the American team which won the Nations Cup in Gijón and third in the Grand Prix at the Longines Los Angeles Masters 12 * as of November FEI Longines Global Ranking 13 The Masters’ Highlights The Longines Speed Challenge : Friday 5th December, 10pm Created in 2010 by EEM World, this competition requires perfect mastery of time and infinite precision, which are two key values of the Swiss watchmaking brand Longines, the Official Timekeeper of the Masters Grand Slam Indoor and an enthusiast of equestrian sport since 1878. In this competition with prize money amounting to 100,000 euros, competitors must try to achieve the fastest time without incurring any jumping faults: any rail knocked down adds two seconds to the rider’s time. Times are displayed in realtime for spectators and the best time is used as a reference for the following competitors. Precision and speed are therefore required to win. At just 19 years old, the young woman is already competing in one star international shows. She will be competing in the Invitational Trophy at the Gucci Paris Masters. When did you begin to ride ? Electra Niarchos : I started riding when I was four. I rode one of my family’s ponies. Her name was Shrimp. I have always loved horses and riding but I started to take it more seriously when I was a bit older. How old were you when you started competing ? Electra Niarchos : I took part in pony competitions for about a year and a half before moving on to horses when I was fourteen. That is when I started training with Thierry Rozier. I was sixteen when I did my first competition with him so I would say that I have really been doing competitions for about three and a half years ! How many horses do you ride ? Electra Niarchos : At the moment, I ride three mares: Lilli Marlen, Up and Down By Wisbecq and Venezia d’Ecaussines. Could you briefly tell us about them ? Electra Niarchos : I have had Lilli the longest. She taught me everything. She is a lady and she knows it. I ride Up and Down in big classes. She is solid, nothing gets to her, and all she thinks about is food! Venezia is the strongest and youngest of the three. She is sensitive and has lots of character. It is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation created to promote and protect the rights of the world’s most vulnerable children. «Although children are the cornerstone of our society and the centre of our concerns, it is ironic how they seem to be in more danger now than ever before. As President of AMADE for almost twenty years, I remain convinced of the importance of adapting to the new challenges and threats that weigh on our most vulnerable children: disease, illiteracy, sexual exploitation, and violence, which is sometimes more psychological than physical. It is important to develop appropriate solutions to really make a difference in the field for those who need our support the most». HRH Princess Caroline of Hanover. Although AMADE intervenes when the rights of children are violated, it also conducts humanitarian programmes in partnership with various bodies. More information on: www.amade-mondiale.org Gucci and EEM World have supported AMADE Mondiale since 2009 by including a unique and original event in the Gucci Paris Masters’ sports programme. Created by Charlotte Casiraghi, the Style & Competition for AMADE, which involves both personalities and top riders, has become a highlight of the event. Combining sport, elegance, and fund raising, this competition, which is particularly popular with spectators, helps collect funds for AMADE Mondiale to allow it to continue to support its various humanitarian programmes. 18 Sponsored by companies, ten teams (one rider from the Masters and one rider from the Invitational Trophy) jump over a course against the clock. Teams can choose to jump jokers to improve their time or, on the contrary, add penalties to it in case of rails which are knocked down. Each team competes in fancy-dress to the music of its choice before a jury of personalities which will include Estelle Lefébure, the model and actress, this year. In 2013, the generosity of the riders and sponsoring companies resulted in a donation of 180,000 euros being made to AMADE Mondiale. 19 CULTURE : contemporary Art with the Opera Gallery GASTRONOMY : Yves Mattagne’s Michelin-starred dinners This year, culture will have pride of place at the Prestige Village through a masterful exhibition of contemporary works presented by the Opera Gallery. As is the case every year, the Masters Club offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the heart of the action: Michelin-starred lunches and dinners served along side the main competition ring. The Masters Club’s priviledged guests will witness both the show and sporting prowess while savouring the refined and inventive cuisine by two-starred Michelin Belgian Chef Yves Mattagne and his team accompany the Masters Grand Slam Indoor around the world in Hong Kong, Los Angeles and Paris and offer this unique expertise to audience and guests on three continents. Interview. More than a just an invitation to discover art, EEM World has established a fruitful partnership with the internationally renowned gallery and while some works have been transported to each of the Masters Grand Slam Indoor events, others have been selected according to the host countries and cities. How did you begin working with Christophe Ameeuw ? Yves Mattagne : «It all began when we met in Brussels. Christophe Ameeuw was a regular guest at my restaurant, the Sea Grill, and was already a connoisseur of my cuisine. He offered me the challenge of take over the cuisine of his event in Brussels. I liked the idea and accepted. That is how it all began. He then went on to Paris to organise the Gucci Paris Masters and I followed him there and then on to Hong Kong and Los Angeles. Over the years, our partnership turned into a friendship. The three works that are part of the Masters Grand Slam Indoor travelling collection have already won over the Chinese and American public. One cannot fail to admire Scottish sculptor David Mach’s impressive 4 metre-high piece “Stallion”, created entirely out of coat hangers. The public will almost certainly contemplate French artist Pierre Matter’s incredible 2.6 meter «Cheval Mecachrome», a horse’s head made entirely out of parts of a Formula 1 engine. Lastly, they will be able to appreciate the beauty and strength of French sculptor Richard Orlinski’s «Cheval Cabré». In addition to these flagship sculptures, no less than 33 prestigious works by 25 artists have been specially selected to be exhibited at the Gucci Paris Masters: Alexis Paul, Arietti, Fernando Botero, André Brasilier, Bernard Buffet, Lita Cabellut, Alexandre Calder, Umberto Ciceri, Mauro Corda, Nick Gentry, Gully, David LaChapelle, Tianbing Li, Umberto Mariani, Mr Brainwash, Noart, Hwang Ran, Gérard Rancinan, JeanPierre Roc-Roussey, Alain Rodier, Seen, Antonio Ségui, Ho Terry, Victor Visarely and Andy Warhol. 20 Is it a real challenge to cook for these prestigious events where there are a lot of guests ? Yves Mattagne With the expertise and skills he acquired in renowned kitchens such as that of the Hilton International in Gatwick, The Orangerie, and of Jacques Le Divellec, etc., the Belgian Chef took over the Sea Grill in Brussels, where the quality of his cuisine has been awarded two Michelin stars. In addition to the Sea Grill, Yves Mattagne has opened Yu Me (Asian fusion lounge and chic brasserie) in Brussels and has helped open a number of restaurants all over the world such as The Avenue at the Peninsula Hotel in Chicago, The Barsu at the Sheraton Hotel in Bangkok, L’Océan in Bordeaux, The Lan Club in Shanghai … Yves Mattagne : Yes. There is the same stress and pressure as in a restaurant. Every year, I need to create seven different menus for 1000 people for each service. I work closely with the Parisian caterer, Fleur de Mets. I prepare all the dishes and tasting sessions are carried out each time as the Gucci team wishes to try them all. Then, two of my chefs arrive on site a week before to purchase the last food items and supervise the preparation. I arrive the day before the competition starts and I stay until the end because I think that if your name is on the menu you must be there. What type of cuisine do you serve ? Yves Mattagne : An international cuisine based on light dishes. If I propose Asian dishes, I mix them with my Franco-Belgian cuisine. For example, in Hong Kong, I add an Asian touch by adding coconut milk to my lobster bisque. The base is the same but I change the side dishes. This depends on the local produce available in Paris, Hong Kong, or Los Angeles. I try to satisfy and surprise the guests who I am beginning to know well. Is everything already organised for the next Gucci Paris Masters ? Yves Mattagne : Yes, at last! We are ready for our guests ! 21 La Nuit des Masters: Thursday 4th December from 8pm For the opening of its sixth edition, the Gucci Paris Masters unrolls its red carpet during a gala evening where sport and entertainment will take the centre stage! The public, the partners, the media, personalities, riders and all fans are invited to this gala evening during which a tribute will be paid to the show jumping French medallists at the 2014 World Equestrian Games. Directed by Antonio Giarola, La Nuit des Masters will showcase an hour of equestrian numbers performed by renowned artists. After the show, the Prestige Village of the Gucci Paris Masters will open its doors for a live concert followed by Jérémie Charlier’s DJ set. Highly reputed, the stables play a key international role in horse-trading. Organizing show jumping events was a natural follow up to Christophe’s passion for this sport. He made his debuts in 2004, when with the Pessoa family he took over and relaunched the Jumping de Bruxelles (known as the Audi Masters), an event dear to him, as it was where his passion for horses was born as a child. In 2009 he created EEM World and with his know-how and event marketing expertise decided to salvage the Jumping de Paris, which had been interrupted for years. Building a partnership with the luxury fashion house of Gucci - who made a come back to the world of equestrianism after a 20-year absence - EEM World launched the Gucci Paris Masters alongside the Salon du Cheval de Paris, the most important horse related exhibition in France. The challenge was overwhelming but the event became a major success. After 4 successful editions of the Gucci Paris Masters, recognized as the most prestigious international indoor show jumping event, Christophe Ameeuw, decided to make his dream come true and unroll the Masters Grand Slam indoor concept in three continents, adding Hong Kong and Los Angeles to the world renowned Parisian event. In 2014, EEM World realized its international ambition with three iconic events, on three continents, with the inaugural edition of the Longines Los Angeles Masters last september. www.eemworld.com Christophe Ameeuw commented : « It has always been my dream to bring show jumping to the forefront of the international scene and give our wonderful and spectacular sport the awareness and visibility it deserves. The Masters Grand Slam Indoor concept, inspired by tennis, was created with that in mind ».
