Spools are a great option for home owners with tight spaces to fill or on
a budget, and perfect for empty nesters. The combination allows you
to enjoy both features without the large price tag, and the versatility of
warm water lets you greatly extend your swim season from summer to
fall, and even into winter.
The design ideas are limitless with spools, from modern and linear to
adding natural rockwork to create a more rustic look, but keep in mind
that spools may not be for everyone. They’re not the best idea for active
pool owners who envision water basketball, volleyball or other pool
games.

For homeowners with small backyards, a swimming pool may have
seemed out of reach, however, this simply isn’t the case any longer as
spools have taken the swimming pool industry by storm in recent years.
You may be asking, “What is a spool?” It’s simple – a pool and spa
combined to create a relaxing, backyard oasis. Spools are much smaller
than the average swimming pool, but larger than a normal spa.
You can leave the heater off to use as a swimming pool or you can turn
the heater on and use it as a traditional spa as spools are built with
normal spa jets to create that bubbling, swirling current perfect for stress
reduction and soothing sore muscles. You can even add a swim jet to
create resistance for an amazing form of exercise either with the heater
on or off.

Retractable screens are now the norm. As a result, retractable screen sales
are booming in our area! They are the only way you can screen a double
French door. You need a screen that can disappear when the doors are shut
and then screen off a doorway when the doors are open. It is preferable for
a single door over the old fashioned unsightly swinging screen door with the
gas piston spring. That fixed ugly swinging metal door negates the whole
reason for having a beautiful front door or French door. And they work great
on sliding doors.

The right retractable screens will last decades. When they aren’t in use, they
are rolled up and protected from the elements so that the mesh looks new
for years. But the important part of the last sentence is the word “right”.
Since retractable screens came into the market about 20 years ago, several

avoid when shopping for a retractable screen:

Does it snap back? You don’t want to crush a little one’s finger and there
are brands out there that can do that.

Is the housing closed in on all 4 sides. Some brands leave the back open
where dust and grime can get in easier making the screen not operate
correctly.
When you push on the frame does it bow. There are brands that when
you push on the frame it can move 3 or 4 inches. Heavy gage aluminum
frames won’t bend or bow.
Is there felt in the bottom track. That is where dust and grime gather the
most. Cleaning that off of the felt is a real hassle and almost impossible.
Are the plastic parts actually plastic or nylon. Nylon is much stronger
than plastic. Plastic can become very brittle over time and crack or
break apart.
If the metal isn’t powder coated it may chip, flake, or fade. Powder
coating looks like paint but acts like armor. And it is environmentally
friendly.
Most meshes aren’t puncture proof. There are some out there that are.
You can actually take a pencil, poke a hole in it and it will come back
into shape and a few seconds.

Two companies I strongly recommend are Clearview Screens and US
Retractable Screens. Both of these companies have been around for several
years. They have taken the best features of some of the high quality screen
doors on the market and made them better. They kept the strong points,
with variations of course, and removed the weak points and then made
improvements over all:
