Bloomington Car Wash
wins best car wash
By Chris Fyall
331-4307 | cfyall@heraldt.com
R
alph May says it is the personal touch that makes
his car wash one of the city’s favorites.
Readers of the Bloomington Herald-Time have
again voted Bloomington Car Wash the city’s best.
Every car that gets washed also gets hand-dried at the car
wash, May said. Towel-wielding employees can get a car
completely clean and dry, he said.
“That is really hard to replicate with machinery,” May said.
“Blow dryers can get most of it, but they almost never get
all of it.”
May has owned the car wash since 2002.
PHOTOS: Debbie Stroud
It is at 542 S. Walnut St., near the corner of East First Street
and South Walnut Street.
The company employs May, one other full-time employee,
and about 30 part-time employees, mostly high-school and
college students. “It is the perfect place to work to make
some spending money if you’ve got a few hours a week to
spare,” he said.
Winter is the busiest season for the car wash, as snow and
slush can make a mess, he said. Plus, cold weather makes
people less likely to wash their own cars.
On one busy winter day, about 600 cars got washed —
maybe the busiest day the car wash has had, he said.
“It had dried up enough that people were trying to get the
winter off of their cars,” May said.

Designscape wins best lawn care
By Christy Mullins
331-4266 | cmullins@heraldt.com
E
xpertise and family values are what keep
Designscape’s clients returning every year for
services, owner Dan Gluesenkamp says.
He and his wife, Debra Gluesenkamp, began the
Nashville-based company 26 years ago with degrees in
natural resource management and botany.
Now the company employs dozens, including 15
state-accredited horticulturists and, at times, the
Gluesenkamp children: 14-year-old Isaac, 21-year-old
Rachel and 25-year-old Gabriel.
Designscape’s services include landscaping, routine
lawn care, tree work and pest control. Gluesenkamp
says the company has around 500 returning clients
and 100 new clients each year.
“Our goal has always been not to serve a customer
once or twice, or just this year, but to do whatever
they need in the landscape field,” Dan Gluesenkamp
said. “We try to be very broad in our scope. Just about
anything from the mailbox to the front door, we take
care of it.”
thumbs up!

Spaah wins best day spa
By Christy Mullins
331-4266 | cmullins@heraldt.com
H
ot tubs and a steamy sauna are what make
Spaah the most popular day spa for de
stressing in Bloomington.
That’s according to spa owner Donna Lafferty, who
says sometimes the sweetheart package that offers
couples side-by-side massages and chocolate dipped
strawberries is so popular she can’t keep up with it.
Side-by-side massages and facials are $10 off every
Tuesday.
The North Walnut Street spa also offers massage
therapy, facials, manicures, pedicures, waxing and
signature treatments such as body wraps and salt
glows. And certified massage therapists sometimes
deliver their services to homes and businesses, known
as “outcalls.”
A lot of Lafferty’s clients are like family, she says.
Many have come to Spaah for 10 years and counting.
She’s been in business since 1995.
“We’re friendly and approachable,” Lafferty said. “We
have a really happy, good attitude, and I think people
appreciate that.”
Spaah first won reader’s choice for best day spa in
2003, then again in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Jiffy Treat wins best ice cream
By Christy Mullins
331-4266 | cmullins@heraldt.com
J
iffy Treet West was the first ice creamery in town
to bring mint chip ice cream to Bloomington in
1976, and since then it’s added so many more
toppings and flavors to the menu that even a college
math student once couldn’t count the possible
combinations.
“It’s endless,” says original Jiffy Treet owner Walter
Reszka, who opened the parlor 36 years ago and still
owns the store on West Ind. 46. Generations of ice
cream lovers have grown up with the menu that adds
but rarely ditches ingredients, Reszka said. And “everyone’s got their own treat.”
Most popular are Jiffy Treet’s Cyclones, a thick blend
of soft-serve ice cream or yogurt with candies or
countless other toppings, mixed with a special blender. Any of the homemade ice creams are also a hit,
Reszka said.
Even people with diabetes or lactose intolerance can
enjoy Jiffy Treet’s “Dream Delight,” an ice cream with
no sugar and no fat.
“We have a diverse menu that satisfies everyone’s
palette,” Reszka said. “That’s why we’re usually voted
No. 1.”
Jiffy Treet also has a location on South Pete Ellis
Drive.

Bloomington Developmental Learning Center
wins best child care
By Christy Mullins
331-4266 | cmullins@heraldt.com
C
hildren who attend Bloomington
Developmental Learning Center eat
vegetarian meals there every day, grown
organically in a garden outside the day care.
Before and after meals, they’re surrounded by what
educators at the center call a “creative curriculum”:
a science center, reading area, phonetic games and
more.
The combination of care and learning is what has
several times won the South Highland Avenue day
care the trust of Herald-Times readers, says Rose Witteveen, curriculum assistant director.
“We’ve been around a long time,” since 1973, she said,
and it has remained a not-for-profit organization
with a group of parents and community members
who serve as its board of directors.
BDLC addresses the whole child, Witteveen said, and
teachers recognize that there are different types of
learners. The center also provides community classes
such as music therapy and Spanish lessons.
“Most children enroll at the center from infancy to
kindergarten,” Witteveen said. “Parents and children
both just love it here.”

Relish wins best
home decor
By Christy Mullins
331-4266 | cmullins@heraldt.com
R
Relish, the swank home furnishings store
just off the square, isn’t new to being readers’
choice for best home decor in Bloomington.
People gravitate to the shop, says owner Sharon
Fugate, because they know they’ll find something different.
Fugate and her husband Brad opened Relish six years
ago, bringing contemporary furniture, lighting and
accessories to shoppers who appreciate odd color
palettes and clean lines, she said.
PHOTOS: De
Debbie Stroud
They’ve also added women’s apparel and accessories
to the merch.
Items inside the store are handpicked by the Fugates,
who last week drove to North Carolina for a furniture
convention.
“We’re selective,” Fugate said. “That’s what people
like.”
