North Central Regional Library and Links to Literacy
Links to Literacy is the early literacy program that librarians throughout
the NCRL branches use in their weekly storytimes. Links to Literacy is
a program that teaches children the skills needed to begin to learn to
read. The branch librarians model book-sharing techniques for
parents during storytimes, so they can incorporate these ideas
into storytimes at home. Join us at your local community library
for stories, songs, rhymes and fun!
Early Literacy Skills that every child learns before reading:
• LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
• BOOK KNOWLEDGE AND APPRECIATION
• ALPHABET RECOGNITION
• PRINT AWARENESS
• PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS
• EARLY WRITING
Early Literacy Spotlight: BOOK KNOWLEDGE AND APPRECIATION
You can help children gain an appreciation of books by making reading fun! Make sure you choose books that are
appealing to the child – nonfiction books that have information about a topic that is of interest to the child; fiction
books that have beautiful illustrations and have a fun and engaging story. Book knowledge comes with the understanding that books are read from left to right and from top to bottom of the page. Be sure to explain that books
have authors and illustrators who create them and point out their names on the cover.
These books are good for practicing BOOK KNOWLEDGE AND APPRECIATION.
