Analysis of Education, Gender and Age Details of Candidates Contesting in the Madhya
Pradesh 2013 Assembly Elections
Summary and Highlights
Madhya Pradesh Election Watch (MPEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analysed the self-sworn
affidavits of candidates from three major political parties (INC, BJP and BSP) in the Madhya Pradesh State Assembly
Elections. A total of 2583 candidates filed affidavits with the ECI among whom 686 candidates were from these major
parties. Out of these 686 candidates, 683 were analysed.
Note: Affidavits of Kailash Vijayvargiya (BJP), Uday Prakash Mishra (INC) and Vijay Singh Chouhan (BSP) have not been analysed
due to issues in their affidavits like missing pages, annexures etc
Education, Gender and Age Details:
Candidates’ Education: A total of 377 (55%) candidates out of 683 analyzed are graduates or have higher degrees. 299
(44%) candidates have educational qualification of 12th pass and below. 1 illiterate candidate is also contesting the
elections.
Candidates’ Age: 288 (42%) candidates out of 683 candidates analyzed have declared their age to be between 25 and
45 years. 364 (53%) candidates declared their age to be between 46 and 65 years while 26 candidates declared their age
to be in between 66 and 75 years. 3 candidates declared their age to be more than 76 years.
Women Candidates: Out of 683 candidates analyzed, only 73 (11%) are women candidates. Among the major political
parties, INC has fielded 23 women candidates while 28 women are contesting under BJP ticket. BSP has fielded 22 women
candidates. In comparison, 65 women contested in Madhya Pradesh 2008 Assembly elections from these 3 major parties .
Party Wise Gender Report for Candidates with Criminal Cases: Out of a total of 610 male candidates from the major
political parties 196 (32%) have criminal cases against them, while out of a total of 73 female candidates, 10 (14%) have
criminal cases against them. Out of a total of 201 male candidates from BJP, 51 (25%) have criminal cases against them,
while out of 28 female BJP candidates, 3 (11%) have criminal cases. Out of a total of 205 male candidates from INC, 86
(42%) have criminal cases, while out of 23 female INC candidates, 5 (22%) have criminal cases. Out of a total of 204 male
candidates from BSP, 52 (25%) have criminal cases, while out of 22 female BSP candidates, 2 (9%) have criminal cases.
Party Wise Gender Report for Crorepati Candidates Out of a total of 610 male candidates from major political parties,
315 (52%) are crorepatis, while out of a total of 73 female candidates, 35 (48%) are crorepatis. Out of a total of 201 male
candidates from BJP, 140 (70%) are crorepatis, while out of 28 female BJP candidates, 20 (71%) are crorepatis. Out of a
total of 205 male candidates from INC, 140 (68%) are crorepatis, while out of 23 female INC candidates, 10 (43%) are
crorepatis. Out of a total of 204 male candidates from BSP, 35 (17%) are crorepatis, while out of 22 female BSP candidates,
5 (23%) have criminal cases
Analysis based on Educational background of candidates
Overall Education report

288 (42%) candidates out of 683 candidates analyzed have declared their age to be between 25 and 45 years. 364
(53%) candidates declared their age to be between 46 and 65 years while 26 candidates declared their to be in between

Overall Gender Report
Out of 683 candidates analyzed, only 73 (11%) are women candidates. Among the major political parties, INC has
fielded 23 women candidates while 28 women are contesting under BJP ticket. BSP has fielded 22 women candidates.
In comparison, 65 women contested in Madhya Pradesh 2008 Assembly elections from these 3 major parties .

Out of a total of 610 male candidates from major political parties, 315 (52%) are crorepatis, while out of a total of 73
female candidates, 35 (48%) are crorepatis. Out of a total of 201 male candidates from BJP, 140 (70%) are crorepatis,
